Founded in 1819 by Captain Aldridge

Partridge, Norwich University is nestled

in the Green Mountains in Northfield,

Vermont. Norwich is the nation’s oldest

private military college.

Today Norwich University offers edu-

cational opportunities for both undergrad-

uate and graduate students. The

undergraduate experience offers a choice

of being in the Corps of Cadets or as a

civilian student. Both lifestyles are inte-

grated within the classroom, athletic

teams and student organizations.

Norwich’s undergraduate student pop-

ulation of 2200 hail from 40 different

states and 20 foreign countries. Eighty-

one percent of the 157 faculty hold termi-

nal degrees. Norwich boasts a student to

faculty ratio of 14:1 and is proud of its

long tradition of excellence in teaching

and personal attention given to students.

Thirty academic programs, including

a teacher/education licensure program,

and four ROTC programs are offered.

Norwich is the birthplace of the ROTC

program due to the innovative educa-

tional methods of Alden Partridge.

As an NCAA Division III school, the

University sponsors varsity athletic com-

petition in men’s and women’s ice

hockey, football, men’s and women’s bas-

ketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s

and women’s cross country, baseball,

softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse,

women’s volleyball, wrestling, men’s ten-

nis and men’s and women’s swimming

and diving, as well as men’s and women’s

rugby.

On campus Norwich offers 80 clubs

and organizations including academic and

professional societies, special interest

clubs and a range of religious, military

and community service organizations.

Under its School of Graduate Studies,

Norwich offers 10 online graduate de-

grees at the Master’s level and one certifi-

cate program. Enrollment in the graduate

school is 1200 students.

Norwich University is located in

Northfield, Vt., just 15 miles from Mont-

pelier, the state capital.

Anthony MarianoDirector of Athletics

Well into his fourth decade of serviceto Norwich University, Tony Marianocontinues to provide leadership to aNorwich athletics program that has at-tained unprecedented levels of success.The 2003-04 season was arguably thefinest in school history as all 16 varsity

sports teams competed in postseason action, highlighted by thefootball team's first bowl game appearance in 20 years, and themen's ice hockey team competing in its sixth Division III "FrozenFour." Additionally, the Norwich men's rugby team qualified forthe 16-team USA Rugby Collegiate Championship for the first timein program history.

Mariano is in his 19th year as the Director of Intercolle-giate Athletics, after spending his first 16 seasons in Northfield asa coach. He was head men's soccer coach from 1978-84, beforebeing named head men's ice hockey coach in 1982. Under Mari-ano's guidance, the Norwich men's ice hockey team made its firstpostseason appearance in 1984, and went on to appear in sevenECAC tournaments and earn two NCAA Championship berths.Mariano stepped down as head coach in 1992 when he assumedhis current duties as athletic director.

Mariano is a 1974 graduate of St. Lawrence Universitywith a degree in physical education. He received his master's degreefrom Norwich in 1975. Tony and his wife Gail reside in Northfield.Their son, Tom, is an assistant hockey coach at Hobart.

Amanda CuiffoAssociate Director of AthleticsSenior Women’s Administrator

Amanda Cuiffo is in her sixth year as anadministrator and coach in the NorwichUniversity athletic department. She waselevated in 2010 to Associate Directorof Athletics after serving for five yearsas an assistant athletic director and the

senior woman administrator. Cuiffo also serves as head coach ofNU’s women's volleyball program.

In her role as Associate Director of Athletics, Cuiffooversees the following sport programs: women’s soccer, women’slacrosse, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’sswimming and diving, women’s rugby, softball and women’s bas-ketball. Cuiffo is also the assistant director of compliance, shemonitors contest scheduling, she oversees event management andshe is responsible for aspects of student-athlete affairs to includesupervision of Norwich’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee(SAAC) and coordination of Norwich’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Pro-gram.

Prior to arriving at Norwich, Cuiffo served as the headwomen's tennis coach at Brandeis University and the assistant vol-leyball coach at Bentley College. Cuiffo also assisted the volleyballteam at Smith College as well as the tennis and squash teams atAmherst College, while completing her graduate work at Smith.

Cuiffo graduated magna cum laude from Colby Collegein 2002. While at Colby, Cuiffo captained the volleyball team dur-ing both her junior and senior years and was a four-time teamMVP. She was named All-New England “Rookie of the Year” in1998, and was twice selected to the All-NESCAC second team.Cuiffo also competed for two years on Colby’s tennis team, cap-taining the squad during her senior year. Cuiffo went on to grad-uate magna cum laude from Smith College, earning a M.S. inExercise and Sport Studies.

David BotelhoHead Athletic Trainer

David Botelho is in his 17th season asthe head athletic trainer at Norwich Uni-versity, while serving as a clinical instruc-tor in the athletic training educationprogram at NU.Botelho came to Norwich from Hamp-

ton University where he served fouryears in the same capacity.

Botelho is a 1989 graduate of Rhode Island College witha degree in physical education and a minor in psychology. Heearned a master's degree in education with an emphasis in athletictraining at Old Dominion University in 1991. He also taught classesin the prevention and care of athletic injuries at Hampton andODU. Botelho is certified by both the National Athletic TrainersAssociation (NATA) and the American Red Cross.

Botelho resides in Essex Junction with his wife Gayle, andtheir sons Jake, Brady and Dylan.

Scott MullenEquipment Manager

Scott Mullen begins his ninth season atNorwich. A 1984 graduate of NU,Mullen previously served for 13 years asthe assistant equipment manager atDartmouth, where he worked with a va-riety of Ivy League championshipteams.

Mullen and his wife Mellissa are the proud parents of twochildren, Shawn (17) and Sarah (13). In his free time, Mullen enjoysexercising and spending time with his family.

Charlie CrosbyAssociate Director

Charlie Crosby is in his seventh year inthe Norwich University sports informa-tion department.Crosby oversees the communication

for the men’s and women’s hockey andfootball teams.He also runs the popular “Charlie’s

Corner” list-serve email list and serves as the liaison for commu-nication between the sports information department at NortheastSports Network (NSN), which broadcasts 50 Norwich Universityevents each year including athletic contests, Commencement andthe Todd Lecture Series.

Crosby previously served as the Director of Major Giftsin the NU Office of Institutional Advancement. Before that, hewas a sales manager for LeCroy, a New York-based firm that de-signs, builds and sells digital high-speed oscilloscopes.

Crosby is a 1963 graduate of Norwich University. He wasa member of both the baseball and rifle teams at NU during hiscollege days. In 2001, he was inducted into the Norwich Hall ofFame.

Crosby and his wife Carole reside in Northfield. Theyhave two daughters and two granddaughters.

Mark AdkinsDirector

Mark Adkins enters his first year as theSports Information Director at Nor-wich University where he will oversee allaspects of the Sports Information De-partment. Adkins will serve as the primary point

for person men's and women's rugby,volleyball, men’s and women’s lacrosse and wrestling.

Before coming to Norwich in July 2011, Adkins servedas the Sports Information Director at his alma mater WartburgCollege (Iowa) for 11 years.

While at Wartburg, Adkins managed sports informationfor 19 varsity athletic programs and was instrumental in the suc-cessful marketing of the college’s athletic programs and accom-plishments through traditional and social media.

Active in Collegiate Sports Information Directors ofAmerica (CoSida), Adkins serves as the national vice-chair of theFred Stabley Writing Contest and on the Academic All-AmericanNational Committee as Director of New Media.

Adkins has already helped establish the first Norwich Uni-versity Cadets Facebook page, Youtube page and will take overNorwich Athetics Twitter account for the 2011-12 season.

Adkins and his wife Terri live in Northfield with theirdaughter Callie.

Matt AlburyIntern

Matt Albury enters his second year asthe sports information intern. He willassist Norwich sports information di-rector Mark Adkins, associate directorCharlie Crosby, and assistant directorDerek Dunning in the day-to-day oper-ations of the office.

Albury is responsible for multiple duties including act-ing as the primary statistician for football, basketball and volley-ball, producing game day programs, and assisting with websitemaintenance. He will serve as the point person for men’s andwomen’s basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving,and baseball.

Albury, a 2010 graduate of Norwich, spent the previousfour years as an undergraduate assistant in the sports informa-tion office.

He lives in Northfield.

Derek DunningAssistant Director

Derek Dunning is in his second yearas an assitant director of sports infor-mation. He is the point person for themen's and women's ice hockey teams,men's and women's soccer teams, soft-ball, men’s tennis and cross countryteams.

He graduated from the State University of New York atOswego in 2009 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and anathletic coaching minor. While at Oswego, he wrote for the Os-wegonian school newspaper as well as the student-run televisionstation, WTOP where he provided color commentary and in-game analysis for hockey broadcasts.

Dunning was a three-year member of the cross countryteam and interned with the Oswego State Hockey Blueline Clubassisting with marketing, media guide sales, and gameday man-agement as well as with the Palladium-Times daily newspaper.

Before coming to Norwich, he has served as theUSCHO.com Division III Women's Correspondent since 2007and worked as a sports reporter for the Leader-Herald daily news-paper in Gloversville, N.Y.

He resides in Northfield.

Head Coach Mike McShane

Mike McShane continues to assemble

an impressive resume at Norwich Uni-

versity as he begins his 17th season

coming off guiding the Cadets to their

unprecedented 13th straight ECAC East

regular season title and ninth Division

III Frozen Four appearance.

He's led NU to three NCAA Division III national cham-

pionships coming in 2000, 2003 and 2010. The Cadets have also

won the ECAC East tournament crown nine times, including

back-to-back titles the last two seasons.

His teams have won 20 games or more 11 times. He has

also been selected as the Division II/III National "Coach of the

Year" four times throughout his tenure at Norwich with the latest

coming last season.

McShane was selected as the 10th head coach of the

Norwich men's ice hockey program prior to the 1995-96 season.

In the 16 years since, he has posted a 341-96-24 record. He be-

came the program's all-time winningest coach in 2008-2009.

Under McShane's guidance, the Cadets have never posted a los-

ing season.

A native of Wakefield, Mass., McShane graduated from

the University of New Hampshire in 1971 as the third-leading

scorer in Wildcats' history and then he went on to earn a M.Ed.

from Boston University.

McShane got his start in coaching at New Hampton

(N.H.) Prep School in 1972. He led the Huskies to three Division

I Prep Championships in six years and a 122-25-6 record before

becoming an assistant coach at Dartmouth College in 1978. In

November 2010 McShane was inducted into the New Hampton

Hall of Fame.

During his two seasons at Dartmouth, the Big Green

won a pair of Ivy League titles and advanced to the NCAA semi-

finals both years.

McShane was named the head coach at Division I St.

Lawrence University in 1980, leading the Saints to a 95-65-6

record in five seasons. In just a couple of years, he turned a dis-

mal program into a national contender. He led the Saints to an

NCAA Tournament appearance in 1983.

McShane left St. Lawrence in 1985 to become the head

coach at Providence College. He led Providence to NCAA play-

off bids in 1989, 1991 and 1992. He was named the New England

"Coach of the Year" in 1989.

He left Providence in 1994 to become a consultant for

the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League before com-

ing to Norwich.

McShane won his 400th career game as a collegiate

coach on Jan. 4, 2003, when Norwich defeated Trinity, 4-1. He

won his 500th career game on Feb. 16, 2007, when NU beat

Bowdoin, 7-4. He enters the 2011-12 season with 585 career

coaching victories.

Mike McShaneHead Coach

In 30 years of college coaching, McShane has received

18 "Coach of the Year" awards, including earning the Edward

Jeremiah Award from the American Hockey Coaches' Associa-

tion in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2010 as the College Division

"Coach of the Year."

McShane was selected as the ECAC East/NESCAC

"Coach of the Year" by the New England Hockey Writers in

2010, becoming the first coach to be honored as "Coach of the

Year" six times by the organization.

In 1999, McShane earned the Paul Harris Award from

the Northfield Rotary, and in 2000 he was honored as the Wash-

ington County "Citizen of the Year".

A number of players coached by McShane at Provi-

dence have gone onto the NHL, including Tom Fitzgerald '88

(Boston Bruins), Rob Gaudreau '91 (San Jose Sharks), Craig

Darby '93 (Montreal Canadiens), Chris Therein '93 (Los Ange-

les Kings), Joe Hulbig '96 (Boston Bruins), Hal Gill '97 (Boston

Bruins), John Ferguson '89 (General Manager of the Toronto

Maple Leafs), Chris Terreri '86 (New Jersey Devils), Tim Army

(Assistant Coach Washington Capitals), Jim Hughes (Player

Personnel Toronto Maple Leafs), and Ray Shero (GM Pittsburgh

Penguins).

Norwich graduate Keith Aucoin '01, a two-time NCAA

Division III "Player of the Year" at Norwich under McShane, is

currently playing for the Washington Capitals’ AHL affiliate in

Hershey, Pa. Norwich alum Kurtis McLean '05, who was a four-

time NCAA All-American under McShane, is currently playing

in the Switzerland Elite League after a stint with the NHL’s New

York Islanders.

Dozens of other recent Norwich graduates have played

professionally overseas. Marc Bellemare played in France and

was the league's MVP as his team won their Divisional Champi-

onship. Jim Nagle is currently playing in Germany, while Mike

Ludwar also played in Europe.

Most recently Nikita Kashirsky ’09, along with Eric

Tallent '10 (Louisiana Ice Gators - SPHL), Tyler Stitt '10 (Hol-

land), D.J. Fimiani '10 (Fayetteville FireAntz - SPHL), Greg Es-

kedjian '11 (Texas Brahmas - CHL) and Chad Anderson '11

(Germany) have continued their hockey careers in the pros after

playing for McShane.

McShane currently resides in nearby Montpelier with

his wife Shawn. He has a son, Daniel, who is a graduate of

Florida International University, and a daughter, Megan, who is

a graduate of Emerson College.

Cory GustafsonAssistant Coach

Cory Gustafson retuns to the Nor-wich bench for his sixth season onthe Cadets' coaching staff.Gustafson is a 1995 graduate of

Harvard University, where he playedfour years of varsity hockey for the

Crimson. He helped the team capture ECAC, Ivy Leagueand Beanpot titles during his standout career. He also helpedlead Harvard to the 1994 Frozen Four. He totaled 42 goalsand 46 assists for 88 career points in 119 career games.

Following graduation, Gustafson played profes-sional hockey in the United States and Europe for nine sea-sons.

Gustafson attended high school at Notre Dame Col-lege in Wilcox, Sask., where he played Junior A and MidgetAAA hockey.

Gustafson and his wife, Katie, reside in Montpelier,Vt., with their daughter, Sophie, and son, Calvin.

Steve MattsonAssistant Coach

Steve Mattson embarks on his 12thseason as a full-time assistant coachfor the Cadet hockey team. Mattsongraduated from Norwich Universityin 1977 after transferring from theUnited States Military Academy at

West Point.A native of Weston, Mass., Mattson holds a Master

of Education degree from St. Michael's College. He assistshead coach Mike McShane in game plan and practice prepa-ration. He also serves as the lead recruiter for Norwichhockey, spending considerable time on the road watchingprospective student-athletes throughout the United Statesand Canada.

Before returning to Norwich, Mattson worked as theDirector of Ice Hockey and assistant hockey coach at SaintMichael's. In six years, he helped direct the program to fiveECAC tournament appearances, winning the ECAC CentralDivision in 1996-97 and the NCAA Division II NationalChampionship in 1998-99.

Jeff KrugerStrength & Conditioning

CoachJeff Kruger, C.S.C.S., is in his sixthyear as head strength and condi-tioning coach at Norwich Uni-veristy.Kruger came to NU from St.

Cloud (Minn.) State, where heserved as the strength and conditioning graduate assistantfor two years.

Prior to that, he interned at the University of Min-nesota. Kruger helped implement an Olympic-basedstrength program for the Gophers and assisted with nu-merous analysis and performance programs.

Kruger graduated from the University of Wiscon-sin-Stevens Point with a bachelor’s degree in Health Pro-motion and Wellness. He earned his MBA from St. CloudState in 2009.

Kruger enjoys fishing and watching MinnesotaVikings football. He resides in Northfield.

Nikki TherrienMen’s Hockey Athletic Trainer

Nicole Therrien is in her fourthyear as a member of the NorwichUniversity athletic training staff.Therrien works with several teams,including NU's nationally-recog-nized men's ice hockey squad.

She arrived in Northfield following a one-year stintat Sacred Heart University, where she worked with the Pio-neers' women's ice hockey and women's lacrosse teams.

Therrien graduated from the University of Ver-mont in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training.During her time in Burlington, she interned with UVM(2004-06), St. Michael's College (2006) and BurlingtonHigh School (2007).

Therrien has served as an ice hockey referee forUSA Hockey in Vermont and New Hampshire since 1996.She has also been an active member of the National IceHockey Official's Association since 2004.

While at UVM, Therrien served as the president ofthe Student Athletic Medicine Society. She has also volun-teered at the Boston Marathon and Vermont CityMarathon in the past.

2011-12 Season Preview

“The Road Back to Placid” 2011-12 Men’s Ice Hockey Preview

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Last March, the Norwichmen’s hockey team found itself back in the Frozen Four

facing the exact same St. Norbert team it defeated the year

before in Lake Placid, N.Y. in a 2-1 double-overtime

thriller to win the program’s third national championship.

However, instead of the storybook ending that was

2010; the Cadets lost 3-2 and had their dreams of a repeat

cut short while St. Norbert went on to win the 2011 Na-

tional Championship the next day.

NU enters the 2011-12 season with high expecta-

tions once again as the squad lost just two seniors from last

year’s 22-6-3 team that won an unprecedented 13th straight

ECAC East regular season crown, as well as its ninth

ECAC East Tournament title.

Legendary Norwich head coach Mike McShane

will have 20 players back from last year’s squad including

seven of the top 10 scorers as he embarks on his 17th sea-

son. McShane enters 2011-12 just 15 wins shy of 600 ca-

reer coaching wins. He has accumulated an impressive

341-96-24 record for a .766 winning percentage while at

Norwich.

Heading the list of returners this season are junior

forwards Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec)

and Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.), along with reigning

ECAC East Rookie of the Year in sophomore forward

Travis Janke (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan)

The three were paired together on the Cadets’ top

line for much of last season and became known as one of

the most formidable offensive combinations in all of Divi-

sion III.

Cotnoir led the team with 21 goals to go along with

17 assists for 38 points, while Janke’s 39 points (12 goals,

27 assists) tied for the team-point lead with Scott

Schroeder. Thomas listed third on the team in goals with 16

markers. Over the summer, Thomas made a name for him-

self at the Minnesota Wild Prospect Development Camp by

scoring two goals in two games.

“We think we’ve got a real good line with Janke,

Thomas and Cotnoir,” McShane said. “We’ll probably start

them off together and see how they do after they finished

off last year together and did a nice job.”

After that though, there is plethora of question

marks surrounding where the rest of the offense is going to

come for the Cadets in 2011-12. Junior forward Blake

Forkey returns, but he’ll be looking for two new line mates

after Chad Anderson graduated last spring and Scott

Schroeder didn’t return this fall.

“We lost three real good impact players that proba-

bly won’t be replaced,” McShane said (2nd Team RBK All-

American defenseman Greg Eskedjian being the third).

“We brought in some guys who we think can contribute but

it’s going to come down to some of our upperclassmen

stepping up and having better years. We’ve got so many ifs,

and we need some of them to pan out. “

Forkey (8-14-22), along with classmates Tory

Allan (4-7-11) and Colin Mulvey (2-4-6) will be counted

on to rekindle their freshman form. Forkey (Boca Raton,

Fla.) tied for the team lead in points, Mulvey (Worcester,

Mass.) scored 10 goals and Allan (Davidson,

Saskatchewan) produced nearly a point-per-game when

healthy.

“Mulvey has come back in even better shape this

year,” McShane said. “He looks stronger and looks like he

has even more speed right now.”

Sophomore forward Chris Duszynski (Okotoks,

Alberta) could also see an expanded role this season after

he posted eight goals and 11 assists on his way to being

named to the league’s all-rookie team during a promising

first-year campaign.

“Duszynski has come back in good shape after he

battled through some injuries last year that limited him a

little bit,” McShane said. “He’s got great hands inside and

if he fulfills what we think he can do, that will be a big plus

for us. He’s a goal scorer with a big frame that plays a

physical game and he can certainly step up for us this year.”

Rounding out the list of returning forwards are sen-

iors Emmond Bell (6-7-13), Igor Martinez (2-5-7) and

Tim Houston (4-1-5), as well as sophomores Shane Gor-

man (1-6-7) and Chris Paquet (2-2-4).

“Igor played great for us last year as a checking line center

and Tim Houston has looked good so far too,” McShane

said. “Paquet, Gorman and Allan have played together a lit-

tle bit and they have shown a little bit of chemistry so far.

When they get going, they are really going, and they’re

tough to stop.”

Three new forwards will join the mix this year

looking to compete for ice time in Gerard McEleney

(Canton, Mass.), Nevin Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) and

Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.) who posted

33 goals and 65 assists last year for the La Ronge Ice

Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

“Lindensmith looks to be a seasoned player,” Mc-

Shane said. “He’s a 20-year-old freshman that has played

junior hockey for a few years on a good team with some

good players. He’s going to see some ice time early, and

we’ll have to see who he works best with.”

“Nevin Lawler is a peppy player who plays with a

lot of energy as does Gerard,” McShane said. “They’re

both young, but I think they are going to develop and be

good players here.”

The Cadets’ defense corps should once again be a

strong point with six returners that surrendered just 2.16

goals per game to rank fourth in the nation.

The group includes three seniors headed by newly-ap-

pointed team captain Shawn Baker (Mont-Laurier, Que-

bec) who takes over the captain’s ‘C’ from Chad

Anderson.

“Baker is a natural leader that does it on the ice and

off it,” McShane said. “The kids really respect him, and

he’s a hard worker in the classroom. He’s likeable, but he’s

very tough and competitive. There is a lot of weight on

your shoulders when you become the captain by dealing

with adversity throughout the course of the year, but I think

Shawn will do a great job.”

Baker registered 11 assists last season and will be

joined by classmates Owen Carpino (0-4-4) and Pasha

Kozohkin (3-3-6) as the leaders on the blue line.

“I think experience on defense helps more than ex-

perience up front because you have guys that are used to

dealing with the pressure,” McShane said. “We’re counting

on Baker, Carpino, and Kozhokin to contribute and show

right away the level the defense needs to be at as a unit.”

Sophomores Francois Gatien (3-6-9), Chris Gour

(0-4-4) and Zac Fulton (1-5-6) will compete for ice time

with four new freshmen looking to break into the starting

top six line up.

“Frank Gatien has come back stronger this year,”

McShane said. “He looks like he worked really hard over

the offseason, and I think Fulton and Gour have looked

strong so far as well in practice. Fulton has been steady,

and Gour is a great puck handler.”

The four new faces are Corey Hale (Montreal,

Quebec), Alec Thieda (Rochester Hills, Mich.), Nick

Poulin (St. Odilon, Quebec) and Bryce Currier (Essex

Junction, Vt.)

“Corey Hale is a good player, and we knew coming

in he was going to be a good player,” McShane said. “How

he adapts to the college game right away will be key. Bryce

Currier is a big, strong kid that has looked good. Thieda has

been steady, and Poulin is small in stature but he plays with

a lot of heart.”

With 10 defensemen on the roster, McShane ac-

knowledged competition for ice time will be fierce and de-

cisions won’t be easy.

“The defense is going to be the toughest decision to

make because they’re all pretty close,” he said. “Getting all

of them in the lineup is impossible to do, but you do have

injuries and usually things have a way of working them-

selves out.”

Sophomore goalie Parker Carroll (West Chester,

Pa.) returns for his first full season in the Maroon & Gold.

He joined the team at the semester break and helped spark a

14-game unbeaten streak after winning over the starting

goaltender job. Carroll finished the year with a 14-1-2

record to go along with a 1.82 goals against average and a

.899 save percentage.

Freshman Matic Marinsek (Ljubljana, Slovenia) is

expected to push Carroll for ice time in the crease this sea-

son after playing for the Slovenian Under-20 National

team. Sophomore Chris Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.)

rounds out the list of goaltenders.

“Parker is in good shape and worked hard over the sum-

mer,” McShane said. “He’s our ‘go to’ guy right now. Matic

is working hard and has some ability. I think it’s going to

take him a little time to adjust to our game, but he’s got

great potential. Chris had an ankle injury over the summer

but he came on last year and improved quite a bit through

the course of the season so we’d like to see him do the

same thing.”

The Cadets were able to start official practices on

Oct. 15 for the first time in over decade after the 12-year

NESCAC/ECAC East Interlocking schedule agreement

came to an end last year.

Norwich will open its 2011-12 campaign this Sun-

day when it travels down to Hanover, N.H. to take on Divi-

sion I Dartmouth in the first of two exhibitions to open the

season. NU will also take on Trois-Rivieres next Sunday in

its home opener at Kreitzberg Arena with face off set for 3

p.m.

“I did enjoy playing the NESCAC schools, and it’s

too bad that happened,” McShane said. “But, after the fact,

you’ve got to move on and now we have the opportunity to

start earlier as well as play teams like Dartmouth and Trois

Rivieres. I thought it would be a great thing for the kids to

play against the best teams they possibly could.”

Norwich opens the regular season with a pair of

ECAC East contests on the road on Nov. 11 and 12 at the

Univ. of New England and then Southern Maine on Satur-

day afternoon.

2010-11 Year in Review

Returning after a national championship season

in 2009­2010, expectations were high for the Norwich

Cadets as they embarked on the 2010­2011 campaign.

After all, most of the offensive firepower that had led the

Cadets to their third national championship was return­

ing ... the fantastic frosh who had powered through Divi­

sion Three were back for more ...well almost.

Several key senior forwards were missing from

that squad ... and several underclassmen elected not to

return ... so while there was still tremendous talent up

front ... there was not the depth that the team had had

the previous year. Then there was the back line. Missing

were three very key contributors ... graduated veterans

Tyler Stitt, Eric Tallent and Steve Coon along with goal­

tender Ryan Klingensmith. Those had been the rocks in

that championship season ... the strong corps that al­

lowed the young forwards to throw things wide open

and just go for it ... with wonderful results. This year

they would need a different approach ... and a lunch pail.

It didn't look that way early. Norwich rolled at

home on opening night. After raising the national cham­

pionship banner they roared past the University of New

England 8­0 ... returning sophomore Scott Schroeder

netted a pair of goals and newcomer Travis Janke

chipped in a pair and sophomore Alex Dubois looked

fine in the cage ... though he only had to face nine shots

to grab the shutout. The next afternoon things were

tougher, as Southern Maine hung with the Cadets deep

into the third period, but Captain Chad Anderson's

unassisted goal in the final two minutes sealed a 4­2

Norwich win that gave them an opening weekend

sweep.

Next it was across the Lake to Stafford Ice Arena

in Plattsburgh for the Primelink Great Northern

Shootout ... first up for NU ... arch­rival Middlebury.

Again a battle, but enough to win. Janke in the first ... an­

other frosh Shane Gorman in the second ... then

Schroeder into an empty net late in the third ... 27 saves

for Dubois in a 3­0 win.

It sent the Cadets into the tournament final

against the Plattsburgh final. This was a veteran Platts­

burgh club ... one that the Cadets had beaten three times

a year earlier ... twice at Kreitzberg and once in the

NCAA semi's in Lake Placid ... the first time had been in a

shootout to decide the Primelink champion. The Cardi­

nals had marked their calendars for this one. It was a 1­

1 game into the third period ... but after Norwich got the

lead on a Tim Houston goal, the Cardinals struck twice

in a minute and ten seconds ... and they held on. Platts­

burgh's 3­2 win earned them the Primelink title ... and

reminded the Cadets that everyone they played would

be pointing to the bullseye on the back of the NU

sweater.

That included Amherst. The following weekend

the Cadets survived to take a point in a tough 2­2 draw

with the Lord Jeffs. Goals by Janke and Kyle Thomas had

Norwich up 2­1 after a period. But NU would not score

again ... and an Amherst shot just wide of the post as

overtime expired was all that kept the Cadets from a

second straight defeat.

Norwich did regroup the next day ... erupting for

six goals in the first two periods on route to a 7­1 win at

Hamilton. Schroeder and freshman Chris Duszynski

each netted a pair and Janke rang up four assists ... they

then rolled past St. Michael's a couple of nights later 8­1

as Pier­Olivier Cotnoir exploded for four goals and

Schroeder put up a goal and FIVE assists. But the first

semester had one game remaining, and it would be one

that would catch the Cadets' and all of D­3 Hockey's at­

tention.

The Castleton State Spartans came into Kre­

itzberg for the final game of the semester. It was a sec­

ond game between the growing Vermont rivals ... a

non­conference meeting to help build on the growing ri­

valry .. and Castleton took full advantage. The Cadets got

goals from Thomas and Schroeder but they could not

get their offense rolling. Castleton played a perfect road

game ... tying it up late in the third and then after a Nor­

wich too many men on the ice penalty ... winning it in

overtime 3­2. This might have been seen as an upset by

some ... but it was no fluke. Castleton had earned the

Back on campus on New Years Eve for the

Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament the Cadets

struggled against ECAC Northeast foe Nichols ... a pair of

goals from Janke and one from Thomas were barely

enough for a 3­2 win ... and with ECAC West power Man­

hattanville waiting in the title game it got worse. The

Valiants jumped into a 3­0 first period lead and went on

to a 5­1 win. When Dubois was pulled after allowing

four goals on eleven shots newcomer Parker Carroll re­

lieved ... that would be a sign of good things to come.

The following Tuesday night in Plattsburgh it

was the regular season matchup with the Cardinals, and

after jumping out 2­0 on powerplay goals by Duszynski

and Schroeder in the first period the Cadets saw the

Cardinals run off six of the next seven. It ended 7­4

Plattsburgh as Norwich ... losers of only one game in

'09­'10 ... dropped their third in four outings.

At 6­4­1 overall ... it was time for the high octane

Cadets to get out their lunch pails and get to work. They

next punched the clock the following weekend back

home at Kreitzberg ... as NESCAC Maine travel partners

Bowdoin and Colby came to town.

First it was the Polar Bears ... a close 2­1 game

through two ... but third period goals from Anderson

and Cotnoir and an empty netter from sophomore Colin

Mulvey provided the needed breathing room while in

net Carroll stopped 14 of 17 shots in his first Norwich

start and the Cadets scored a crucial 5­3 win.

The next afternoon it was more of the same

against the White Mules ... a 3­2 Norwich lead in the

third before Houston (twice), Thomas and Schroeder lit

the lamp as NU pulled away to a 7­2 win and a much

needed weekend sweep.

They built on that momentum the next weekend

on the road ... four goals in the first period (two of them

from Duszynski) backing Dubois's 20 saves in a 6­1 win

at New England College ... a five goal second period and

eight different goal scorers in a 9­4 win the next after­

noon at St. Anselm.

So there, the train was back on the track ... right?

Well not quite. The following Friday night Norwich trav­

eled to Wesleyan ... where they always won ... except this

time. After a scoreless first period the Cardinals erupted

against Dubois in the second ... four goals on five shots.

Norwich outshot them in the period 18­5 ... but came

out of it down four­zip. A pair of Pasha Kozhokin goals

in the third were not nearly enough as NU staggered out

of the Spurrier­Snyder Rink with their most devastating

loss in memory. But as painful as it was that night it also

was a lesson learned. They would not lose again until

the Frozen Four. The next day at Trinity it took a single

second period goal from sophomore Tory Allan and 22

saves from Carroll to earn a 1­0 win and a weekend

split.

Back home Carroll spun a second straight

shutout and freshman Chris Paquet and Schroeder pro­

vided the offense in a 2­0 win over UMasss­Boston ,

bringing a very young but exceptionally talented Babson

team into Kreitzberg. Riding the goaltending of veteran

Zeke Testa the young Beavers built a 4­1 third period

lead on the frustrated Cadets. But in an explosion remi­

niscent of their finest seasons, Norwich roared back.

Allan at 7:28 ... sophomore Blake Forkey at 8:20 ... Junior

Igor Martinez at 8:38 ... three goals in one minute and

ten seconds ... tie game. Babson took a time out ... re­

grouped and got out of Northfield with a tie ... but one

that had to feel like a devastating loss.

Next up for Norwich was the

Middlebury/Williams weekend. The Friday night game

with the Panthers at a soldout Kreitzberg was a typical

Cadets/Panthers battle. 1­1 after one ... 3­1 Panthers in

period two ... Norwich rallied to 3­3 ... 4­3 Cadets in the

third ... Panthers tied it up. a scoreless overtime ... an­

other 4­4 tie! It was a huge night for Thomas ... the

super sophomore scored the first three Norwich goals ...

while Schroeder added the fourth and Carroll was solid

with 22 saves.

The next afternoon the Cadets hosted the Ephs ...

the only team to beat them a year earlier ... and Norwich

dispatched them quickly ... first period goals from Mul­

vey, Schroeder and Janke and 18 saves from Carroll in a

3­0 win.

Norwich was playing well ... but they were still

in a tooth and nail battle for their 13th straight ECAC

East regular season championship ... because the Castle­

ton State Spartans were playing just as well as they

were. So it was that a sellout crowd packed Spartan

Arena the following Friday night to see if the upstarts of

the league could knock the Cadets off their league perch.

They had beaten NU in their non­league meeting in De­

cember. But on this night Norwich was the better team.

Cotnoir scored a pair of first period goals and senior

Greg Eskedjian added a powerplay marker as time ex­

pired to give them a 3­0 lead after one and the Cadets

went on to a 5­2 win.

The next afternoon it was the usual struggle at

Skidmore, but third period goals from Thomas and

Schroeder were enough for a 3­1 win. Back home NU

nailed down the regular season title as Cotnoir scored

twice in a 4­2 win over Connecticut College and added a

hat trick the next afternoon in a 6­3 win over Tufts. 3 N

In the ECAC East playoffs Norwich got two goals

each from Allan, Schroeder and junior Emmond Bell in a

10­2 quarterfinal win over UNE, earning the chance to

again host the league semi­finals and finals. In the

semi's against Southern Maine, Schroeder, Allan, fresh­

man defenseman Francois Gatien and Janke scored the

goals and Carroll stopped 15 shots in a 4­0 victory, set­

ting up a rematch with Babson for the league title and

an automatic bid to the NCAA's.

Allan's early goal gave Norwich the lead ... but

Babson's Mike Hoban tied it in the first and gave the

Beavers a 2­1 lead in the second. It stayed that way until

less than five minutes remained in the third. Enter Kyle

Thomas ... A spectacular rush ... off a spectacular Esked­

jian pass tied the game with 4:30 remaining. Then in

overtime it was the sophomore again ... running down a

long lead pass in the Babson zone and beating Testa for

the championship. The chance to defend their nation­

altitle was alive.

For the first time in their history Norwich was

required to play a Wednesday night NCAA opening

round game ... hosting Curry at Kreitzberg. Given one

more home game the fans turned out in big numbers

and the Cadets rewarded them ... Anderson, Forkey and

Bell with goals ... Schroeder with a pair ... and Carroll

with 15 saves in a 5­1 win that sent NU back to Platts­

burgh for a third shot at the Cardinals at Stafford.

The Cardinals got the first goal ... and dominated

Norwich ... outshooting them 10­3 in the first period.

Cotnoir answered , burying two goals less than three

minutes apart early in the second to push the Cadets on

top. But the momentum swung back to the Birds and a

late powerplay goal tied the game after two. A hard

fought third period settled nothing and with a trip to the

Frozen Four on the line the game went to overtime.

Then 15:46 into the OT a controversial penalty call gave

Norwich a powerplay chance, and 1:57 later Captain An­

derson slipped in behind the Plattsburgh defense to

score the game winner. Carroll was immense with 29

saves, and NU was heading west to the Frozen Four in

Minneapolis.

After a week off the NCAA semi­final at Ridder

Arena proved to be another rematch ... this time a re­

match of the 2010 championship game ... Norwich

against St. Norbert and their All American goaltender

B.J. O'Brien. It was O'Brien who stopped 70 shots at the

Olympic Center in Lake Placid before finally falling to

the Cadets in that one ... and it was O'Brien they faced

again in Minnesota. For two periods he held Norwich off

the board ... 26 saves ... but Parker Carroll held the fort

with nine at the other end. When Norbert's notched two

quick one's early in the third it looked like the Cadets

were done ... but Janke and Cotnoir responded ... tying

the game again at 2­2 with just over eight minutes re­

maining. But this time it would be the Green Knights

with the final answer ... notching the game winner with

7:33 to play.

Norwich's quest for a second straight title had

come up a game short ... but still ... after sitting at 6­4­1

on January 4th, they had finished on a 16­2­2 run. 22

wins overall ... another ECAC East Title ... Another

Frozen Four appearance ... impressive what can happen

when you grab that lunch pail and get down to work.

Officially opened in 1998, Kreitzberg MultipurposeArena meets the long-standing need for a modern intercolle-

giate ice hockey and skating facility at Norwich. It also en-

hanced the recreational and athletic opportunities for all

members of the Norwich community. Equally important, Kre-

itzberg Arena provides the University with a flexible and at-

tractive space for cultural presentations, concerts and campus

convocations.

Kreitzberg Arena received plenty of use its first year

with the Cadet hockey team playing a school-record 21 home

games. Norwich University and Kreitzberg Arena served as

the host site for the 1999, 2003 and 2004 NCAA Division III

men’s ice hockey championships. This 1,400-seat arena can

accommodate up to 5,000 spectators for special events. When

the final phase is complete, the new energy-efficient arena will

help consolidate University sports and recreational facilities

into a single athletic complex, which will also include An-

drews Hall and Shapiro Field House. Plans also call for im-

proved access and parking for students and visitors to the

campus.

Kreitzberg Arena offers many revenue-producing op-

portunities that were previously closed to the University.

Above all, the new arena is an exceptional recreational re-

source for students, faculty and staff and enhance the sense of

community that is already a defining feature of the Norwich

experience.

Kreitzberg Arena has many special features not of-

fered in any other Division III facility in the country. Here are

some of the technical achievements.

Refrigeration System:

The best of its kind utilizing twin chillers running in tandemwith four compressors for maximum response, serviceabilityand safety. This is far beyond the standards of most rinks inexistence today.

Slab Construction:

Made up of granite dust aggregate from local quarries. Fivemiles of piping filled with coolant run underneath the slab tokeep it cool at all times.

Dasherboard System:

Norwich was the first university in the country to install an aluminum framed cantilever dasher system. This eliminatesthe metal post obstructions from the spectators sight line andgets rid of those tricky bounces of the puck off the glass.

Dehumidification System:

This system serves to blow-dry the air for maximum effi-

ciency.

Seating Design:

The aluminum frame seats will never rust. They are also spe-cially designed with open cell vinyl seats and backs whichwarm with your body heat for comfort.

Tournament Capacity:

Six visiting team rooms assure flexibility for the hosting of fu-

ture tournaments. Space is also available for an additional

press box area to handle increased media coverage during

tournaments and special events.

Home Team Accommodations:

The Norwich Cadets enjoy an on-site training room, a team

room, weight-training room, showers, skate sharpening and a

stick customizing shop within the arena.
