A change is here for the 2011-12 Virginia State University men’s basketball program. After a
combined thirteen wins over the past two seasons a new head coach will lead the men of
Troy this season.
Darryl Jacobs enters the CIAA conference after a successful run in the SIAC conference. Ja-
cobs plans on turning the program around by first holding all players accountable. “It starts
with the infrastructure in order to improve the quality play of athletes. We will mix the old
with the new and develop a mindset of hard work and accountability,” Jacobs said.
The Trojans return with two of their main scorers from last season, senior forward, D’Angelo
Johnson (6-4, 215) and senior guard, Justin Bess (6-1, 175). Johnson scored a career-high
twenty-seven points against Johnson C. Smith University and Bess scored twenty-two points
a career-high against the Apprentice School. Adding to the mix will be a 2010-11 All-CIAA
team member, senior Ibn Rassoull (6-4, 210) who is a transfer guard/forward from St. Paul’s
College. “Players must buy into this new philosophy; it’s all about academics, attitude, and a
commitment to excellence.”
VSU’s coaching staff hopes to return eight student-athletes from last season’s team and will
add in four freshmen and six transfers to the mix. Jacobs hit the recruiting circuits just in
time to pull off some impact newcomers. Freshmen additions includes, guard/forward
Kenny Johnson (6-5, 200), forward Shawn Porter (6-6, 210), guard Manny Wallace (6-1, 190),
and guard Devonte Williams (5-10, 175). Jacobs is also excited about his new transfers to
Virginia State. His top transfers are, forward Daniel Awosanya (6-8, 220), forward/center
Kenny Mitchell (6-8, 240), Malik Johnson (6-2, 195), and center Michael Spence (6-10, 245).
VSU will begin their 2011-12 CIAA Championship run at
the “Clarion Hotel Tip-Off Classic” in Shepherdstown,
WV on Nov. 11th
against host Shepherd University and
West Virginia State University. The VSU coaching staff
will continue to prepare their team by participating in
several classics against top competition before entering
conference play. The Trojans will play in the “Mount
Olive College Classic” in Mount Olive, NC and the
“University of West Florida Classic” in Pensacola, FL.
The Trojans’ first home game will be on November 26th
versus Glenville State University.
