Red Foxes Play Well But Fall 67-56 at St. Bonaventure Courtesy: Marist Athletics Release: 12/18/2011

OLEAN, N.Y. - Brandy Gang (Hartville, Ohio) scored a team-high 18 points, on 8-14 shooting, as the Marist women's basketball team shot 42% as a team, but it was not enough as they lost to a good St. Bonaventure team 67-56 Sunday afternoon.

Corielly Yarde (Reading, Pa.) was the only other Red Fox in double figures, scoring 12 points and adding five rebounds and a team-high six assists. Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) had eight points and Kelsey Beynnon (Burlington, Vt.) contributed seven points, four rebounds and a career-high three assists while coming off the bench. Sophomore Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) made the first start of her career and had five points. Marist had seven blocks as a team as Yarde, Gang and Emily Stallings (Newburgh, N.Y.) each had two.

The game started off poorly for Marist (4-4) as they missed their first 10 shots, not making a basket until a Gang layup put the Red Foxes on the board with 11:50 left to play in the first half. In that time, the Bonnies (10-1) had built an 11-point lead.

Marist hit their next three shots, going on a 9-2 run to get themselves back in the game. Gang drained a three-pointer, Ockenden made a layup and Stallings hit a mid-range jumper to close the score to 13-9 with 10:03 left in the first half.

After St. Bonaventure held the Red Foxes scoreless for the next five minutes, Yarde hit a three-pointer that started an 18-10 run that closed out the half with Marist coming all the way back to have a 27-26 lead. Gang had five consecutive points on another trey and a jumper . Kristina Danella (Manalapan, N.J.) hit two free throws and a short jump shot in the paint that gave the Red Foxes their first lead at 21-20. After the Bonnies' Jessica Jenkins hit her fourth three-pointer of the half, Dulin scored on a layin and Gang had four more points to go into the break.

Gang was 6-9 shooting in the half to lead all scorers with 14 points. Danella had five rebounds and Ockenden had grabbed four to lead all players.

The second half started out with back-and-fourth action. The Red Foxes kept coming back to tie the score, but could not jump ahead. With St. Bonaventure leading 48-42, Yarde and Ockenden hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to even the score again. The Bonnies responded however, with a 7-0 run over the next 2:47 to take a 55-48 lead with 5:10 left to play.

A Beynnon three and a three-point play by Ockenden closed the deficit to four at 58-54, but that is as close as Marist could get the rest of the way. St. Bonaventure tightened their defense and only allowed a Yarde layup over the final 4:23 to pull away for the win.

The Red Foxes conclude their four game road swing as they travel to Long Island to participate in the New York Life Holiday Invitational, presented by Hofstra. Marist will play Auburn of the SEC Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 2:30. They will they play either Hofstra or CCSU on Thursday. The team will return to McCann Arena after the holiday when they host Kansas State on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.

2011-12 MARIST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES (2012 NCAA TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND)

Marist is the lowest seed remaining in the tournament. The only other double-digit seeds remaining besides the Red Foxes are Kansas and Gonzaga, which are both 11 seeds.

Marist is now 5-7 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, and 3-1 as a 13 seed. The only other time the Red Foxes were a 13 seed was 2007, when they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with victories over Ohio State (fourth seed) and Middle Tennessee State (fifth seed).

In its 12 NCAA Tournament games all-time, Marist has been the lower seed 11 times.

Marist suffered a 67-56 loss to St. Bonaventure on Dec. 18 of this season. The last time the Red Foxes lost to the same team twice in the same season came in 2004-05, when they fell to Canisius twice.

St. Bonaventure has defeated Marist three straight times, which came in regular-season contests in the 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. The only team to defeat Marist more than three consecutive times in Head Coach Brian Giorgis' tenure is Siena, which defeated the Red Foxes six straight times between the 2002-03 and 2004-05 seasons. Those were Giorgis' first three seasons at Marist.

Marist became just the third team to eclipse 70 points against Georgia this season (Gonzaga had 71, Tennessee had 80).

Corielle Yarde has scored over 20 points in each of Marist's last two NCAA Tournament games, with 21 against Georgia on Sunday and 25 against Duke in last year's second round.

Ohio State led by seven late in the first half before a Viani three in the closing seconds of the half cut the Buckeyes’ lead to 34-30 after the first 20 minutes. A jumper by Rachele Fitz tied the score at 49 apiece with 10:07 to go, and a three by Viani on Marist’s next possession gave the Red Foxes the lead for good. Marist preserved the victory as Viani and Nikki Flores combined to go 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 18 seconds. March 19, 2007 #13 Marist 73, #5 Middle Tennessee State 59 Maples Pavilion – Stanford, Calif. GOING THE EXTRA YARDE

Senior Corielle Yarde is making sure she ends her Red Foxes’ career in style. The versatile guard is the only player in Marist history to rank in the all-time top ten in points (tied for 5th), assists (8th) and rebounding (7th). She is also in the top-ten in blocks (6th), three-pointers (5th) and steals (tied for 10th). Yarde became the 18th player in Marist history to reach 1,000 points for her career, celebrating the achievement on her first basket of the season versus Villanova.

MORE GANG FOR YOUR BUCK

Senior Brandy Gang is making a late-season push to reach 1,000 points for her career. She enters the Tournament second on Marist with 393 points, giving her 954 for her career. Five times this season she has reached the 20-point plateau, including back-to-back 21-point performances against Niagara and Iona at the end of the season. Gang was the only player in the MAAC to be ranked in the top-10 in field goal percentage (.486, 2nd), three-point percentage (.364, 6th) and free throw percentage (.735, 8th).

OCKENDEN LOCKING IT DOWN

Sophomore Leanne Ockenden has thrived in her first year in the starting lineup. She has more than doubled the minutes she played in her first year in a Marist uniform, and has proven the coaches right in both her offensive and defensive efforts. She is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.9 points per game and is on the cusp of already ranking in Marist’s all-time top ten of three-pointers made, having connected on 58 of her shots from downtown this year. She has more than quadrupled her steals total from a year ago, making 53 thefts this season while constantly drawing an opponent’s leading scorer.

CASEY DU-LINSANITY Since taking over the starting point guard position eight games into the season, sophomore Casey Dulin has become somewhat of a sensation. She has scored in double-digit figures 16 times since joining the starting lineup and has also registered four or more assists in 15 of the 25 games. She has also turned into one of the top free throw shooters in the conference, shooting at an 80% clip for the season. MOST IMPROVED BEY-NNON Junior forward Kelsey Beynnon is the third member of the Red Foxes starting lineup who has benefitted from increased playing time. After a slow start to the season, Beynnon has found her groove in MAAC play. In 18 league games, she reached double- figures in scoring six times, set and tied her career- high of six rebounds five different times and shot an impressive 51% from the floor, including 31% from three-point range. NOTHING TO HANG YOUR HEAD ABOUT Of Marist’s seven losses this year, three of them were to teams that made the NCAA Tournament. St. Bonaventure, Kansas State and Princeton all made the field of 64. Additionally, South Dakota State, who the Red Foxes beat back in November in the Cancun Challenge, also made it to the Dance.

HEAD COACH BRIAN GIORGISTENTH SEASON

SUNY CORTLAND, 1977CAREER RECORD: 251-72 (.777)

SIX-TIME MAAC COACH OF THE YEAR

Brian Giorgis is in his 10th season as head coach of the Marist women’s basketball team, and is the program’s all-time leader in wins. His career record stands at 225-65 and his .776 winning percentage is sixth best among active Division I coaches. He stands behind all-time coaching greats such as Geno Auriemma (UConn), Pat Summitt (Tennessee) and Tara VanDerveer (Stanford).

In his first nine seasons in Poughkeepsie, Giorgis has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times - three times outright (2003-04, 2007-08, 2010-11), and a share of the award on two other occasions (2004-05, 2005-06).

Giorgis, a 2010 inductee into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, has led the program to national prominence in his first nine seasons. Last season, the Red Foxes reached their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament and their seventh in eight years. Marist achieved the highest national ranking in program history when they were ranked 17th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll on March 8. The team also won its eighth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title with a perfect 18-0 mark in the MAAC, and finished three games ahead of second-place Loyola. It was only the second time since the MAAC expanded to an 18-game schedule that a team has finished with a perfect conference record, with the other time being the 2007-08 Red Foxes.

Marist entered the NCAA Tournament as 10th seed in the Philadelphia Regional and faced off against the seventh-seeded Iowa State Cyclones. The Red Foxes used a 25-4 run over a span of 6:51 in the first half to grow a lead as large as 20 points, 40-20 and held on for the upset 74-64. Marist went into their second round game against second-seeded Duke, boasting the nation’s longest winning streak at 27 games. The Blue Devils had to come from behind, scoring 11 straight points with under five min-utes left in the game to take the lead for good, ending Marist’s season 71-66. The Red Foxes finished one win shy of tying the program record with 32 wins.

Beyond his success on the floor, Giorgis has also led his program to participate in a number of initiatives within the basketball and local communities. Since taking over the program in 2002-03, the Red Foxes have helped to raise funds for a number of different causes. The team has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Kids’ Day Out, a one-day clinic sponsored by to benefit students with disabilities. Additionally, the Red Foxes have worked with the WBCA in its efforts to promote breast cancer aware-ness with an annual “Pink Zone” contest. The women’s basketball program also works with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which attempts to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. The Red Foxes adopted Nina Triplo in April 2010.

In 2009-10, Marist when 26-8, and won their seventh straight MAAC Regular Season Title with a 15-3 conference record. The Red Foxes defeated Fairfield 66-49 for their fifth consecutive MAAC Tournament Championship. Awarded the 12th seed in the Memphis Regional, Marist took on fifth-seeded Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes had their season cut short by the Hoyas however, 62-42.

The Red Foxes went 29-4 in 2008-09 with a 16-2 mark in conference. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 that season as well, and was ranked for three weeks. For his efforts, Giorgis was named the Maggie Dixon Coach of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association.

In 2007-08, the Red Foxes set a new program record with 32 wins. Marist posted an 18-0 record in the MAAC, the first team to do so since the conference expanded to 10 teams, and won its fifth consecutive regular season title. The Red Foxes also earned their first in-season ranking in 2007-08 when the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ poll ranked them 25th on Feb. 12. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the poll by the end of the regular season. A record 21-game winning streak propelled Marist to its fourth MAAC Tournament title and a seventh-seed in the New Orleans Region of the NCAA Tournament.

Marist won its first round NCAA Tournament game for the second straight season, using a 39-7 run over the last 14:13 of the game to defeat 10th-seeded DePaul 76-57. The Red Foxes took a 22-game winning streak, the nation’s longest at the time, into their second round game against LSU. While Marist did fall to the Tigers, the Red Foxes showed they can hang with the nation’s elite teams for a second straight season. Giorgis earned two accolades for his work during the 2007-08 season. He was named MAAC Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time in six seasons that he earned at least a share of the award. The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association also honored Giorgis by naming him and C. Vivian Stringer of Rutgers the Maggie Dixon Co-Coaches of the Year.

Giorgis and the Red Foxes enjoyed an historic season and its third trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. He led the Red Foxes to their first ever win in the NCAA Tournament, a 67-63 upset of fourth-seeded Ohio State. Marist followed it up with a 73-59 win over Middle Ten-nessee State to advance to the Sweet 16. The win over MTSU marked the first time a MAAC program, men’s or women’s’, reached the Sweet

16 in conference history. Marist’s Cinderella run on the national stage came to a close when it met eventual national champion Tennessee in the Sweet 16. The Red Foxes won 29 games during the season, and embarked on winning streaks of seven and 13 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the fourth straight season.

In 2005-06, Giorgis led Marist to a then program-best 23 triumphs and its second trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes embarked on winning streaks of seven and 12 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the third straight season.

In 2004-05, Giorgis guided Marist to a 22-win season, which included a then program-record 16-game winning streak. After starting the MAAC season 0-3, the Red Foxes closed it with 15 consecutive triumphs to earn the top seed in the MAAC Tournament for the first time.

The 2003-04 season was historical, as it was the first time the Red Foxes earned a berth in the NCAA tournament in what became known as a “season of firsts.” Additionally, Marist earned its first share of a MAAC regular-season title and compiled its first winning record in 11 years.

Giorgis’ first campaign laid the foundation for future success. Taking over a team in 2002-03 which had lost the fourth- and fifth-leading scorers in program history to graduation the prior year, Giorgis’ team improved its win total from 11 to 13. The Red Foxes also earned their first win in a MAAC Tournament game in school history with a first-round triumph over Loyola.

Prior to his arrival at Marist, Giorgis enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. In his final season there, the girls basketball team finished with a fourth-place national ranking in the USA Today poll and earned its fourth straight New York State Federation Championship. He earned WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors, was runner-up for WBCA National Coach of the Year honors and was selected to coach at the Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America Game.

As the head girls basketball coach at Lourdes, Giorgis posted an astounding record of 451-44 in his 19 seasons, good for a winning percentage of .911. He won nine state championships with the Warriors. In his last two years, his teams posted a combined mark of 56-2 and earned the top ranking in the Madison Square Garden Tri-State Area Poll each year. Giorgis has earned two WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors and two coach of the year awards from the New York State Coaches Association. He led Lourdes to the league title all 19 of his seasons there and won 15 Section I crowns, with the last 11 coming consecutively.

Giorgis’ achievements at Lourdes were not limited to the basketball court. He is the only coach in state history to take teams in four different sports to the state Final Four, as he also guided the baseball, softball and volleyball teams there. His softball squad captured the state crown in 1990. Additionally, Giorgis coached golf and tennis at Lourdes and served as athletic director for 10 years. He served two stints as president of the Section One Girls Basketball Coaches Association.

Giorgis earned a bachelor’s degree in health education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1977, and earned a master’s in health education from Virginia Tech University in 1982.
