“Shakespeare & Company is the most consistently pleasing theatre Festival in America.” Terry TeachouT

DeAr FrienDS,Shakespeare & company’s Fall, holiday and Winter seasons come complete with merriment, intrigue, romance, and even a flying saucer or two (thanks in part to orson Welles)!

By now, it’s a well-known fact that there’s always something going on at Shakespeare & company. our cornucopia of year-round offerings provides audiences with exciting, thoughtful productions long after the Summer season has ended. as the leaves begin to change, our Fall, holiday and Winter seasons will rev up, giving audiences a cheery dose of entertainment during these chillier months.

This fall, we’re embracing the halloween spirit with the provocative War of the Worlds, a live adaptation of orson Welles’s thrilling radio broadcast about Martians invading earth. complete with song, dance, and live 1940s-style radio advertisements, this re-imagined production has our versatile S&co. actors slipping seamlessly from one character to another. come December, our newest holiday tradition, The Santaland Diaries (from beloved humorist David Sedaris), will light up the elayne P. Bernstein Theatre with audience favorite Peter Davenport hopping back into his pointy-toed shoes to star as crumpet — Santaland’s slightly jaded but loveable elf. The New year rings in with Moliére’s sharp-witted farce The Learned Ladies, directed by Founding artistic Director Tina Packer.

and, of course, concurrent with these performances we have the education Program’s 23rd annual Fall Festival of Shakespeare, the January Month-long Intensive actor training program, the conservatory at Shakespeare & company and their production of Cymbeline, special events like Will 448 (our namesake’s Birthday Bash), our Spring Tour of Shakespeare: Macbeth, our fun-filled production of Shakespeare and A Language that Shaped a World, and too many others to mention. With so much going on, it’s clear that we don’t really have an “off-season” anymore, and that’s just how we like it. at Shakespeare & company, we believe that creativity and artistic innovation are year-round endeavors, so please join us as we dive headfirst into a fresh round of fabulous events and shows.

Join us for Shakespeare & company’s newest holiday tradition! a whimsically mischevous look at the dark side of christmas, The Santaland Diaries was such a hit with audiences last year that we’re bringing it back for another round of satiric, peppermint-coated fun. Based on the popular short story by David Sedaris and featuring the multi-talented Peter Davenport (who originated the role for S&co in last December’s production), this side-splitting one-man show chronicles Mr. Sedaris’ time spent working as a christmas elf in Macy’s Department Store.

artistic Director Tony Simotes pulls out all the stops in this re-imagined production, which is sure to have you laughing your pointy-toed socks off! occasionally subversive, alarmingly clever, and surprisingly poignant, The Santaland Diaries is well on its way to becoming a modern holiday classic.

From one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature — the French playwright Molière — comes this outrageous satire about a family of headstrong women. Believing scholarly pursuits to be fashionable and socially beneficial, these well-to-do ladies fawn over latin verses and flowery poetry. But when the youngest daughter refuses to marry her mother’s favorite scholar, this upper-class family is thrown into a fit of hilarious chaos.

Directed by Founding artist Director Tina Packer and featuring a cast of S&co. newcomers and veterans, this classic French farce bursts with clever dialogue, outlandish antics, and romantic entanglements. one of Molière’s most popular plays, The Learned Ladies is like a good glass of French champagne, and will have you giggling before you even know it.

4 days, 10 Shakespeare plays, 30 S&co. artists, and over 500 students! continuing the tradition

of immersing youth in the most active, compelling and transformative ways, last November 500

students from 10 high schools took part in our 22nd annual Fall Festival of Shakespeare, a program

that WBur from Boston compared to “a rock concert. Show after show, the theater is

jammed with kids cheering for each other.”

The tradition continues this November with four days worth of Shakespeare that is passionately performed and enthusiastically received, all in

an atmosphere of joy and celebration. These performances are unique, insightful, heart-rending, and laugh-out-loud hilarious, and

our Founders’ Theatre is barely able to contain the mirth and excitement of these student

performances. you really must join us for our 23rd annual Fall Festival of Shakespeare!

a rollicking fairy tale written late in Shakespeare’s career,

Cymbeline has it all: angry kings, clever princesses,

roguish mountain bandits, and heart-pounding battles. Set in

ancient Britain, the story follows Imogen, a royal daughter who

disguises herself in order to flee a tyrannical father and

an unwanted marriage. along the way, she meets a variety of humorous country folk, dodges the swinging swords of British

and roman soldiers, and falls head-over-heels in love.

Cymbeline is a lively, action-filled tale that’s sure to

keep audience members on the edge of their seats.

actor training is at the very heart of Shakespeare & company and for three decades S&co. has honed the techniques taught in the Month-long Intensive. an immersive training experience, the Intensive guides participants through text analysis, movement, elizabethan dance, alexander Technique, linklater Voice Work, stage combat, exploration of the actor/audience relationship, sonnet study, scene work, and in-depth discussions about the function of theatre in today’s world. actors train their voices and bodies with a regimen of demanding classes, and delve deeply into their own imaginations, intellects, and emotional lives in order to bring the whole of the actor’s being into the moment of theatre.

led by a core group of S&co.’s Master Teachers, the Month-long Intensive brings around 40 actors to the Berkshires every January. To learn more about this unique training experience and take the next step in your actor training, visit the center for actor Training at Shakespeare.org/training.

a whirlwind tour through the life, times and work of William Shakespeare, Shakespeare and the Language that Shaped a World features six actors, a few props, and a truck-load of historical information and scenes from Shakespeare’s greatest plays. This hysterical, fast-paced presentation is designed to introduce kids and adults to Shakespeare through his stories, characters, and words—with a bit of sword-fighting and clowning thrown in for good measure.

Shakespeare and the Language that Shaped a World will tour Middle and elementary schools throughout the northeast in the early spring of 2012. It lit up the elayne P. Bernstein Theatre for a successful run last spring, and will return to Shakespeare & company for a series of special Saturday and Spring Break presentations in april 2012.

each show is followed by a free, interactive workshop based on one of Shakespeare’s plays, which is open to all. (Previous workshops include A Midsummer night’s Dream, romeo and Juliet, and As You Like it).
