Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and meet other eligibility requirements.

RESIDENT PHOTO ID CARD INFORMATIONA valid town of Amherst Resident Photo ID card is needed to register for programs and services and to receive resident discounts for open skate sessions. Resident ID cards also allow for unlimited free use of the Clearfield and North Forest pools during the summer months. ID cards are valid for one calendar year.

Cards may only be purchased at the Youth & Recreation Department office. Cost is $5.00 per person; cash, check or charge.

Proof of residency and a new photo (taken at time of ID card registration) is required for new and renewal cards.

Proof of residency for Adults: Driver’s license or a valid non-driver ID.

Proof of residency for Children: Child’s birth certificate or 2019 ID card.

Refunds & FeesPlease note that no refunds will be given for registration fees or programs. Programs will be cancelled due to inclement weather and on all major holidays.

A Message to Parents – Age RequirementUnless stipulated in the program description, age requirements are as of the date of the first class. All age requirements are set to benefit the children and make instruction more consistent for the program instructor. In some instances, requirements are set for the child’s safety.

SNOW SHOE Adventure /WILDLIFE TRACKINGAges 8 and up

Site: Meet at Williamsville Youth Center rear parking lot (5005 Sheridan Drive). We will enter Amherst State Park from there.

Fee: $15 per participant

Special Notes: If weather conditions do not support snowshoeing on 12/27, Earth Spirit will provide an indoor nature program at this location.

Open skate is for people of all ages. To participate, all you need is your Resident ID card and the appropriate fee. Non-residents Guests are welcome. Helmets and protective clothing are recommended.

Description: A variety of different dodgeball games will be played including: Regular Dodgeball, 5 Pin Dodgeball, Jedi Dodgeball, Prison Dodgeball, Army Dodgeball, Outer Realm Dodgeball, Rainstorm, Spud, Fireball, Pinheads, and more. (We use lightweight, soft, Gator Skin dodgeballs for this program.)

BEGINNING ARCHERY - YOUTHDescription: Learn the

fundamentals of Archery using compound bows. Covers the basics of archery including safety, form, aiming, scoring.

Description: Beginning Tennis instruction for children. Skills to include: Forehand, Backhand, Serve, Volley and rules of the game.

Each winter season, Amherst Youth & Recreation partners with local schools and partners with individuals, families, businesses and organizations in order to provide new warm clothing (coats, boots, mittens/hats and sweaters) for students in the Town of Amherst.

In 2018, 298 babies, children and youth living in our town received new winter jackets, boots, clothing, pajamas, etc. purchased by kind and caring adults, teens and families.

If your child is in need of warm clothing, please contact your school social worker. All referrals must come through the schools.

If you would like to “adopt” one or more children, please contact Kathy Mobarak-Miller, Project Coordinator, 631-7132, ext. 7523 or [email protected]. Items must be purchased prior to Tuesday, November 26, 2019. Cash donations/sponsorships are gratefully accepted.

Description: Looking for something different? Try pickleball – it’s oversized ping pong played on a badminton court with a tennis sized net. A paddle is used to keep a plastic ball going back and forth over the net. Pickleball is for all athletic ability levels and is easy to learn to play. For ages 18 and over.

INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES ADULT PROGRAMDescription: This program involves socialization, open

gym, crafts and cooking.

AFTER SCHOOL 2019-20

GENERAL INFORMATIONAccredited After School programs are provided for youth who attend school in the

Town of Amherst. The program operates Monday – Friday from 2:30pm-5:30pm. An

extended afternoon program from 5:30-6:00pm is available. Children are bussed from

the school to the program according to school district guidelines.

Special weekly activities, including cooking, educational games,

exercise and group activities are offered through the program.

Amherst Youth Engaged in Service (YES) ProgramThe Youth Engaged in Service (YES) volunteer program provides the opportunity for students

ages 12-21 to contribute and participate in the community. Members provide service by direct interaction with children, senior citizens, low-income families, persons with a disability, and charitable organizations. Youth Work$ is a year-round extra job service which links Amherst residents in need of assistance in, or around their homes, with

Amherst youth ages 12-19 years who are a part of the program. Residents in need of assistance with jobs such as gardening, light housework, child care, leaf raking, shoveling snow or other jobs should contact YouthWork$ to discuss your needs and ways that we may assist you. FAMILY & COMMUNITY SERVICESAMHERST TASK FORCEThe Amherst Task Force for Healthy Community•Healthy Youth is a diverse group of community leaders, educators, parents and citizens who collaborate to support positive youth development efforts throughout the Town of Amherst. The group meets monthly to discuss issues, make decisions and take action on positive youth development.

The Amherst Task Force strives to strengthen relationships within families, among peers, within schools and other institutions and across generations in order to build a solid foundation for youth.

Transportation to and from Mid-Winter and Spring Recess Camp must be provided by the parent/guardian.

PROGRAM INFORMATIONMid-Winter and Spring Recess Programs are for youth ages 5-11.

Our camp programs offer fun-filled educational activities, field trips, guest speakers, along with arts and crafts. Activities are designed to enhance each child’s social, emotional and physical growth and development. Children are encouraged to develop new skills in a safe atmosphere of fun and fair play.

The directors of our programs are experienced and qualified. They are assisted by counselors who have been selected for their skills, personality and experience in working with children. Programs operate weekly, Monday through Friday, from 8:00am-5:30pm at the sites noted.

An Early Bird Program is offered from 7:30am-8:00am, available for an additional fee of $1 per day, per child (resident); $5 non-resident. An Extended Day Program is offered from 5:30pm-6:00pm; available for an additional fee of $1 per day per child (resident); $5 non-resident.

Lunches and beverages are required to be brought from home.
