my role: The residence in the ancient neighborhood of Nachlaot in Jerusalem is a

project divided into two wings, each with its problems of conservation and level chang-

division of the army. The project was already fully designed when I joine the firm. I

completed the submission set to the permit office and created a full set of construction

documents, including plumbing, structural and electrical plans. All work was done in

structure, security and useThe use of BIM software allowed us to produce drawings reflecting every change in the plan or section that was required by either the clients, engineers or city/army. The “safe room” for the West apartments, for example, served as the lateral support structur-ally, and was used as a bedroom for the apartments and yet had to follow the instructions from the army: 40cm thick concrete, 1 sq meter window and indirect access. These conflicting interests required many trials to coordinate correctly.

my role: Gil and I developed a design together after proposing separate designs and

converging them. The design evolved through meetings with the clients. At every

meeting, we produced a set of images that described the spaces as they were modeled

in Archicad. Concurrently, we produced working drawings that we submitted to the

city for verification of property rights.

live display space planningUsing the different display methods of the software, we were able to communicate the latest design changes to the clients and even modify the model with them.

The approach in this design is concerned with efficient use of square footage. The plan is understood in quadrants, and the top left quadrant is eliminated in order to enter the house in the middle, thus reducing wasted circulation area. Another trick is the use of staggered levels with one flight of stairs leading to the kids’ room and another flight leading to the top floor with the master bedroom and guest room. The kitchen is also sunken almost two feet in rder to make it feel bigger and allow more views and light.

sectional managementThis design is sectionally oriented, and therefore, managing things like the mullion pattern, and lines of site between section and elevation drawings is key. The long section, for example, shows the benefits of half-floor separations to more efficiently use the al-lowed floor area ratio on this lot.

detailingDeveloping the details for construction in Jerusalem is an example of common detailing in complex construction con-straints. Construction in this city is made of rigid materials (concrete and blocks) in order to support the required Jerusalem limestone cladding system. The window detail shows a box for rigid blinds built into the concrete wall. The beam detail resolved structurally a vertical discontinu-ity of walls. The threshold details were case by case solutions for keeping water out of the building.

my role: Rendering and imaging is a marginal but informative application in Gil’s

practiece. For this building, we built a model of the house in Archicad, modeled the

penthouse floors for interior planning, and rendered this image using ArtLantis for light-

ing and Piranesi for the textured effect.
