A YEAR IN REVIEW2010 has been a fast-paced year for your association! This review provides a summary of the work in consumer promotion, producer education and legislative efforts. Thank you volunteers,National Pork Board (NPB) and National Pork Producers Council (NPPC).

Radio Ads AirRadio offers your organization a large listening audience and the ability to target at a competitive rate. Six radio ad campaigns aired on radio stations statewide this year with the message of responsible pork production and recipes for consumers. KPA Involvement: Provided radio reads from the NPB, coordinated buys and cost share with NPB to purchase the buys.

2010 Swine Profitability ConferenceBalancing production, innovation and risk manage-ment to maintain profits is key to a successful business and no one knows that better than pork producers. This year’s conference brought veterinar-ians, businessmen and pork producers together to improve business. KPA Involvement: Main sponsors for the conference and KPA staff attended.

KPA on Almost 50% of Americans use at least one social networking site, with the vast majority being Face-book. Worldwide there are 500 million active users. Now users can connect with Kansas Pork Associa-

tion through Facebook by searching for Kansas Pork Association. KPA Invovlement: KPA staff created a Facebook “Like” page and maintains content.

Legislative and Regulatory IssuesIn the state legislature, your association worked to reshape the Kansas Animal Health Department’s fee structure, provided testimony against additional greenhouse gas regulations and worked to ensure funding for the Feral Swine Eradiation Program was renewed. On regulatory issues, the KPA has worked on behalf of producers with the Kansas Department of Revenue, the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Division of Water Resources, the Kansas Depart-ment of Health and Environment, the Kansas Animal Health Department and the Kansas Department of Commerce.On the Federal level, the KPA has worked with NPPC on many issues including food safety, antibiotics, climate Senator Mark Taddiken addresses the board during the

change, free trade agreements, trucking, nutrient management, air monitoring, livestock competition, and taxes.

2010 Wendell Moyer Student Enrichment GrantJamie Briscoe, an undergraduate in Animal Sci-ences and Industry at Kansas State University received a $1,000 enrichment grant. The grant was in remembrance of Wendell Moyer, a founding mem-ber of the Kansas Pork Association in 1956.KPA Involvement: Funded and presented the schol-arship at the 2010 Swine Profitability Conference.

Direct LineDirect Line is a monthly newsletter that keeps our members informed on industry news, upcoming events and hot topics. KPA Involvement: Produces the newsletter.

National Pork Industry ForumNational and State representatives from Kansas attended the National Pork Industry Forum held in Kansas City, MO. Forum serves as the annual

meetings of the National Pork Board and the National Pork Producers Council. The goal of the meeting was defining what it means to be a part of the world-class pork industry. KPA Involvement: Delegates and the KPA staff attended.

Pig Tales MagazinePig Tales is a four color, bimonthly magazine publication. It’s contents focus on the industry statewide and also incorporate news from the national level. Pig Tales is mailed to over 500 Kansas Pork Producers. Additionally, Pig Tales is disbursed to about

150 allied industry supporters, and nearly 150 complimentary persons including extension and university personnel.KPA Involvement: Publish the magazine.

TV Ads Air in Topeka Beginning April 1 and running through the end of the year, 30 second pork commercials aired on FOX 43 KTMJ. A total of 12 commercials per day Monday-Friday have aired. Commercials included a “Pork &” ad produced by the National Pork Board and two seasonal commercials targeting tailgating and holidays produced by FOX 43 KTMJ with local chef celebrity Chef Alli. KPA Involvement: Coordinating use of national ad, coordinating seasonal commercial production and cost share with NPB to purchase the TV ad buy.

KNC and KDA Conference Each year close to 300 dietitians, Family and Consumer Science teachers and WIC Professionals gather for the Kansas Nutrition Council (KNC) and Kansas Dietetic Association (KDA) conferences.

This year’s KNC conference attendees heard a 30 minute session focusing on “Pork and Health” by the National Pork Board’s Manager of Nutrion Com-munication & Research, Adria Sheil-Brown RD,LD, visited with Chef Alli to prepare a Spiced Orange-Chipotle Pork Tenderloin and had the opportunity to attend a joint meeting about “Today’s Food Produc-tion” sponsored by the KDA, KPA, Kansas Beef Council and Midwest Dairy Council. The meeting included Dr. Ken Odde, Department Head of KSU’s Animal and Industry, Dr. Daniel Thomson, of KSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine and beef, pork and dairy producers. Roy Henry, Longford represented the KS pork industry by attending the dinner and answering specific questions on pork production. KPA Involvement: Coordinating Adria Sheil-Browns speaking opportunity and Chef Alli’s pork demon-stration, sponsored booth rentals at both KNC and KDA Conferences, coordinating joint meeting with Kansas Beef Council and Midwest Dairy Council.

Ag in the ClassroomKansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom helps teachers learn about the state’s agricultural industry. Each year they host graduate courses for Kansas teachers during the week of June 7-11. The

course brings together teachers from around the state and provided hands-on learning opportuni-ties. KPA members, Richard, Jody and Kyle Cott of Clay Center operate one of the farms that the group visited. While at Keeott Farms, Inc. teachers learned about no-till farming and pork production. KPA Involvement: The Cott Family is a member of your association, KPA staff presented teaching tools and offered free teaching tools to attendees.

@KansasPorkNews on Twitter is a real-time information network site that gives you the latest information about what you find interesting. There are over 175 million registered users on Twitter and now KPA is a part of it too. Find us at @KansasPorkNews. KPA Involvement: KPA staff created the Twitter profile and maintains content.

Midwest Living MagazineMidwest Living reaches over 320,000 homes throughout KS, IA, OH, MO, and NE with one of the most popular issues being the summer grilling issue. This year KPA partnered with Iowa Pork Producers, Ohio Pork Producers, Missouri Pork Association, Nebraska Pork Producers and National Pork Board

to provide a full page pork ad in the grilling issue. KPA Involvement: Coordinate ad placement and cost share with NPB, Iowa Pork Producers, Ohio Pork Producers, Missouri Pork Association and Nebraska Pork Producers Association for ad buy.

Kansas Agriculture Day165 State lawmakers celebrated Kansas Agriculture Day by feasting on a lunch of Kansas foods compli-ments of agricultural organizations. Also, during the luncheon legisla-tors heard from Senator Mark Tad-

diken, Representative Larry Powell,Secretary of Ag Josh Svaty and Secretary of Commerce Bill Thorn-ton. Your organization was a part of the luncheon. KPA Involvement: Lunch Sponsor and KPA staff manned booth.

Football PromotionPork Checkoff’s “We Care” trailer grilled pork samples outside of Bill Snyder Family Stadium dur-ing the KSU-UCLA game on September 4. Kansas State University students and volunteers cut and prepared nearly 400 pounds of pork for tailgaters. Volunteers and sponsors included producers, KSU students, the National Pork Board staff and Seaboard Foods. KPA Involvement: Volunteer ticket purchases, event management and coordination.

United Association ConferenceApproximately 125 Kansas Family and Consumer Science Teachers and Extension Specialists gath-ered for their spring conference in Wichita. Your organization’s involvement provided the financial

means and incentives for attendees to use pork in the classroom for cooking demonstrations. KPA Involvement: KPA staff attended the event, hosted a booth with vari-ous teaching tools and sponsored five $50 pork Visa cards to use in classrooms to buy pork.

Taste of Home Cooking SchoolsTaste of Home Cooking Schools are four-hour learning opportunities for attendees. Most events include a two-hour trade show and a two-hour demonstration with culinary special-ists. One of the best ways that the KPA has found to reach approxi-mately 4,500 primary home meal cooks in Kansas is by being a part of

the trade show segment. KPA Involvement: KPA staff attended schools in Emporia, Hutchinson, Marysville and Wichita. KPA purchased booth space and served pork samples.

Kansas 4-H SponsorshipYour organization provides recognition for individual effort and achievement at the county and state level for Kansas 4-H’ers. KPA Involvement: Kansas 4-H Patron Sponsor program with an annual financial contribution.

Operation Main StreetThis program helps producers across the country upgrade the pork industry’s image starting at the local level. Kansas has seven OMS speakers. This year those speakers reached a total of 971 people with 30 OMS presentations that educated consum-ers on pork production systems, health and nutrition information and current technologies in agriculture. KPA Involvement: Working with NPB to organize training, providing Kansas specific educational material and KPA staff participating in OMS.

Kansas FFA SponsorshipYour organization provides support for the Swine Production-Entrepreneurship and Swine Production Proficiency Awards for excellence in the supervised agricultural experience (SAE) programs.KPA Involvement: Award sponsor with a annual financial contribution.

Community OutreachThe Pork Community Outreach Programs is designed to assist individual pork producers in becoming more involved and visible in their local communities. This year your organization supported 12 events with the cost-share program. KPA Involvement: Matched financial contributions to events with a $500 cap.

Pork Chop OpenAnnual Pork Chop Open Tournament held on Sep-tember 3 in Washington. Over 60 participants played in and competed for a chance to win the $10,000

hole-in-one on Hole 7. The tournament is a fund-raiser for your association.KPA Involvement: KPA Staff coordinated event.

KAMP SupportKansas Association of Meat Processors and your organization worked to provide an award for the Most Innovative Pork Product. KPA Involvement: Financial support for award.

Women’s Network Magazine BuyThe Kansas City Women’s Network consists of very well known women’s magazines; Good Housekeep-ing, Redbook, Woman’s Day. This magazine group has a circulation of 69,199 people with 283,716 readers. Your organization, Missouri Pork Associa-tion and NPB sponsored a full page ad. KPA Involvement: KPA and America’s Pork Produc-ers cost shared the ad buy.

Kansas FACS Teachers $50 CardEach year, the Kansas Association for Career and Technical Teachers gathers in Overland Park for their annual conference. This year KPA gave out 40 $50 gift certificates to Kansas Family and Consumer Science teachers during their luncheon and briefly presented on cooking tools for the classroom.KPA Involvent: Purchased the 40 $50 gift cards and KPA staff presented at the luncheon.

SNA-KS Annual ConferenceThe School Nutrition Association of Kansas is a non-profit professional organization representing more than 500 members who’s mission is to promote quality school nutrition programs. Your organization played a large part in the Annual Conference. KPA Involvement: Luncheon sponsor and KPA staff presented “America’s Pork” during two educational sessions.

Online Ad BuyThe U.S. Census Bureau has found that about 78% of Americans use the internet. KPA was involved

with a 6 week Online Campaign with Schafer, Con-don and Carter, the National Pork Board’s advertis-ing agency to touch people online in Kansas. Ads appeared on sites that were food and local news related and linked people to www.theotherwhite-meat.com on Google’s ad network.KPA Involvement: KPA and the NPB cost shared the online ad buy and ad creation.

KPA on YouTubeYouTube is the most popular online video com-munity worldwide that allows millions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos. Specific channels on YouTube allow people to share multiple videos, make friends and subscribe to video feeds. The KPA now has a YouTube channel and posted videos. To visit the channel and view videos, search YouTube for KansasPork. KPA Involvement: KPA staff created the YouTube page and maintains content.

Pigging Out And About Blogspot.

KPA on Blogger4 out of 10 Americans read blogs. To connect with those readers, KPA launched “Pigging Out and About” in late 2010. The blog serves as a consumer restaurant guide, a place to provide cooking tips and a means to encourage pork consumption. The blog is authored by two Kansas City Barbecue Society judges, Chris Petty and Mike Epler. The site reached over 1000 visitors during its initial month online. Most traffic was driven by other social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. Go to http://piggingout-n-about.blogspot.com/ to see the blog. KPA Involvement: KPA staff created the blog and maintains content.

Child and Adult ConferenceThe Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federal program that provides reimbursement for healthful meals and snacks served to children and adults. Each year the CACFP has an Annual Conference. Attendees of this conference include child care centers, day care homes, after school programs, adult day care, and Head Start Programs. Your organization was a part of their Annual Confer-ence held in Manhattan and sponsored a fun recipe demonstration. KPA Involvement: KPA staff presented “America’s Pork” during two breakout sessions and worked with BBQ expert Rob Russel from Ace of Hearts BBQ to teach a pork loin recipe.

Retail PromotionThe Kansas City Star has a 90% Metro circulation and reaches 874,000 adult readers. KPA and the NPB worked with retailers such as Price Chop-per and HyVee with excellent retail results in the past and continued to do so this year. This year KPA along with Missouri Pork Association and the National Pork Board placed two full page ads to highlight the aggresive sales on fresh pork during the tailgating season. KPA Involvement: KPA and the NPB shared the cost of the full page ads.
