Time for ChangeEntering his fourth season as

the head coach for the women’s volleyball program, head coach Scott Davenport turned this spring and summer into his best recruiting class to date in an effort to finish well ahead of the 10th position that was predicted by the coaches in a preseason California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) coaches poll.

Grabbing only two wins in 29 matches, the Toros saw their second win of 2009 come in their second to last game, a 3-0 sweep of Cal State Stanislaus, before falling 3-1 to No. 25 Chico State in the regular season finale, hopefully giving the Toros a glimpse of this year’s consistently competitive nature after sending out 2009’s seniors on “Senior Day.”

“We learned a lot about preparation, and how our behavior during the course of the season has a major impact,” Davenport begins.

“And we realized that we have to change our behavior to improve week in and week out, and not only when we have a good match or get a win so the newcomers can model the returners from the get-go.

“The core returning players know what we expect of them, and they know what we expect them to teach the new players.”

The returnersThis year, the Toros return six

players and three with redshirt experience on the sidelines, led by five-year senior Ashley Clark and instant offense herself, senior Samantha Maxwell.

Clark, a former CSUDH Presidential Scholar who’ll also be embarking on her third term as Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President, was the lone Toro to appear and start in all 29 matches. She led the team in kills and finished 2nd in kills per game, tallying

5 double-doubles and landing a season-high 23 kills and 21 digs against CS East Bay.

Her value both on and off the floor is immeasurable, and a trait Davenport surely will miss at the season’s end.

“Ashley has developed into the best player she can be and is doing everything we are asking of her as a captain, leader, mentor and role mode,” he begins. “She is the foundation of the program and also has been one of the more productive players on the team, and we expect that from her again this year.”

An explosive leaper, Maxwell started 21 matches in 22 played, leading the team with

3.18 kpg and tallying double-digit kills in nine matches, double-digit digs with six, and garnering five double-doubles. She landed a personal-best attack percentage against Western Washington, connecting for 18 kills in 34 attempts (.412).

“Sam is a very offensive minded player who hits a very heavy ball, and we are hoping she can come back from her injury and give us the points on the court she did last year,” says Davenport.

Junior setter Cassidy Mangum begins her second full season as the starting setter, looking to improve upon her 6.26 assists per game and total

of 570. She was the only other Toro besides Clark to see action in all 29 matches, starting 24, with her 570 assists bringing her at No. 5 on the Toros’ all-time assist list for a single season. The Victorville native enjoyed two matches with at least 40 assists, and currently sits at No. 10 on the all-time Toro list for career assists with 764.

“Cassidy is going to bring a lot of leadership and knowledge of our offense,” says Davenport. “She is completely on the same page with our system, and will run our offensive effectively.”

A libero by trade, junior Madison Horsley will also see action as an outside hitter this

year, a move that will utilize both her range and leaping ability. The San Dimas native appeared in 28 matches while starting in 18, finished 2nd on the team in aces and 3rd in kills. She also recorded two double-doubles and 10 double-figure dig efforts, including a season-high 19 digs against CSUEB in the Toros’ first win of the season.

“Madison knows the system and will be huge for us this year,” Davenport says. “She will also bring a lot of energy and leadership to the court.”

A true bright spot for last year’s squad, libero Hilary Hougardy came on strong during the season, finishing 2009 at No. 5 in the CCAA in digs per game with 4.0 after seeing action in 27 matches as the libero. She grabbed 35 digs in the final match of the season to push her to No. 5 in the school’s single-match records, while leading the team with 19 aces.

“Hilary climbed in the rankings last year from being in the bottom of the conference as a libero to being in the top five,” Davenport beams. “She knows what to expect from our opponents and is very well prepared, and will be able to show our newcomers how to prepare for our opponents and step into that role.”

A senior this year, Cambrea Horn looks to improve upon last season’s effort that saw her net 0.40 blocks per game in 18 matches played. The Fresno native record a season-high four blocks against CSUEB, and six kills twice to end with 41 on the season.

“Cambrea is a proven winner, and someone who knows how to compete,” says Davenport. “She will bring a very high level of competition to the gym, and will push others to be better.”

The FutureClaiming victories in the southern California

recruiting war has been few and far between for the Toros in recent years, but this year continues the positive upswing in finding the best local talent available.

“With the recruits we are bringing in, I think we can compete with the elite teams in the CCAA and challenge them,” Davenport begins. “I am not sure if we can beat all of them, but with the talent we

have, I believe we can end up somewhere in the middle of the pack at the end of the season.”

Freshmen rule this year’s recruiting class, with Elaine Hicks expected to provide the most immediate impact. A 5-11 outside hitter from Elsinore HS, she led the Tigers to four-straight league titles, including three undefeated seasons.

Additionally, two redshirt freshmen in Denise DeVine and Celeste Tuioti-Mariner will be counted on after spending a year in the system and getting rid of the true freshmen jitters.

“Elaine will have an immediate impact and be a marquee player,” Davenport says,” while Denise and Celeste should come out strong to start the season after training with us and knowing how

competitive the conference is and seeing what it takes to win in the CCAA.”

Middle blocker Abbey Prusa is another freshman who will be counted on for immediate production this year. After being named a 1st-team all-league selection en route to leading her squad to a 14-0 season last year, Davenport expects big things from the Simi Valley native.

“Abbey is very dynamic and explosive player with a huge upside, and a lot of room to grow,” says Davenport. “She will play a big part as well.”

one step at a TimeLooking forward to no

longer being the doormat of the CCAA, Davenport is hopeful with this year’s roster, but remains conservatively optimistic after last season’s sub-par season.

“It took a number of years to get the right girls in, who have good character and are willing to learn and improve, which is paramount” he begins.

“We are focusing on improving, especially on being a tenacious defensive team that goes after every serve and keeps every ball alive. We will also run a very fast offense with a lot of speed and a lot of energy, and I hope that this could be the year where we can turn things around and start to be consistently competitive.

“We are light years ahead of where we were at the end of last year, and it’s really fun to be in the

SCOTT DAVENPORT

Entering his fourth season as the official women’s volleyball head coach and seventh season overall with the program, Davenport is no stranger to the game of volleyball with a career that spans back to Genesee Community College (GCC) where he began his journey as a player in 1992.

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Davenport is a 1989 graduate of Greece Olympia High School. He then attended GCC where he led his squad to a league championship en route to earning MVP and all-league honors.

After transferring to Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW), he helped the Mastadons earn an NCAA Division I National Championship semifinal

berth, finishing 4th overall. An avid fan of beach (sand) volleyball, Davenport moved to Southern California in 1995 in pursuit of a

professional career, which began in 1996 and continues to this day. Over a 14-year career in the world of professional volleyball, Davenport has seen action on the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour (AVP) with 115 appearances and back-to-back 5th place finishes in 2001 and 2002. Davenport had his best year in 2001 with six top-nine finishes and a No. 13 national ranking in the AVP.

Aside from his domestic experience, Davenport also played and served as team co-captain at the Pan American Games for Team USA in 1999, where he and his partner earned a seventh-place finish internationally in Winnipeg, Canada. Davenport also served a short stint in the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball World Tour in 2002.

Locally, Davenport founded Club Performance Volleyball, a small junior boys and girls club located in Palos Verdes, Calif. He was the head coach of the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School boys program from 2000-03, earning consecutive CIF Bay League Coach of the Year honors.

In addition to his Toro coaching duties, Davenport continues to be an active member of the AVP pro volleyball tour and also coaches a number of AVP teams in the summer.

Returning to the classroom after taking time off to compete on the AVP tour, Davenport graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology.

Married to the former Wendi Dearsman, the couple welcomed their first child Luke, in late January, 2010. The three reside in Redondo Beach.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, Sonoma State, and its newest member, Cal State East Bay.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (101 men, 48 women) all-time, including Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball title in 2009-10, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10).

CCAA institutions have been very successful in the 25-year history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, nine softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.

The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from Southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as Commissioner.

There’s nothing like a delicious In-N-Out® Burger after a big game. 100% pure beef, hand-leafed lettuce, real American cheese, and juicy tomatoes stacked high on a freshly baked bun. Always cooked fresh to order. So stop by after the game and let our team give you something to cheer about.

ills university president

Mildred García, Ed.D., is the seventh president of California State University, Dominguez Hills and the eleventh female president—the 1st Latina president—in the California State University system.

With a strong commitment to equitable access in higher education for all and with more than three decades of teaching

and administrative experience, Dr. García took the helm as President on August 1, 2007 and is poised to lead the highly diverse faculty, staff and student body at CSU Dominguez Hills. An urban university located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, CSU Dominguez Hills offers 45 baccalaureate degrees and 21 master’s degrees. Enrollment exceeds 14,000 students, of which about 2,000 enroll via distance education opportunities. The student population is among the most ethnically and culturally rich in the nation. President García brings with her a commitment to multicultural alliances and believes that these coalitions strengthen not only an individual’s self-development and opportunities, but also strengthen institutions and communities.

President García came to Dominguez Hills after serving from 2001 to 2007 as president of Berkeley College in New York and New Jersey, where she championed the cause of access with success—the obligation to make the attainment of a college degree a realistic goal for all who strive to succeed. Under her leadership, the college began offering full academic programs in an online format. Over 14 bachelor’s and 14 associate’s degrees were approved, including Criminal Justice, International Business, Fashion Marketing and Management, Health Information Management and Human Resources. The college also made a number of capital improvements during her tenure, including the construction of new facilities as well as the modernization and renovation of existing facilities.

Prior to Berkeley, she was at Arizona State University (1997-2001), holding a variety of positions there, including Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Associate Director of the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University, and Tenured Professor in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department.

From 1986 to 1996 she was at Montclair State University, starting out as Executive Assistant to the

Vice President of Academic Affairs before joining the faculty in the School of Professional Studies and serving as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs (1988-1996). She has also held the post of Dean of Students at Hostos Community College of City University of New York (1979-1986).

An educator foremost, President García’s research has concentrated on equity in higher education and its impact on policy and practice. She has written extensively and is a much sought-after speaker at national and international conferences. Among the books she has authored are Succeeding in an Academic Career, which focuses on how faculty of color can succeed in higher education; Assessing Campus Diversity Initiatives (co-published); and Transforming the 1st Year of College for Students of Color (with Laura I. Redón and Dawn Person). Most recently, she was a keynote speaker at the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Annual Conference, and presented at the American Council on Education’s 3rd Summit for Women of Color Administrators in Higher Education. She was panel moderator for “Connecting Higher Education to Industry and Marketplace Needs” at the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference and delivered the keynote address at the University of San Diego, Community College Leadership Development Initiatives Summer Academy.

President García is an active member of the American Council of Education where she serves on its Board of Directors. She also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Peer Review, Association of American Colleges and Universities; on the Advisory Board for Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, on the Board of Trustees of the Caucus Educational Corporation; on the Board of Trustees of Caribbean University, Puerto Rico; and as founding board member of the National Council for Educational Partnerships.

President García received a Doctor of Education as well as a Master of Arts in higher education administration from Teachers College, Columbia University; an M.A. in business education/higher education from New York University; a B.S. in business education from Bernard Baruch College of City University of New York (CUNY); and an A.A.S. in legal secretarial sciences in business from New York City Community College of CUNY.

DR. MILDRED GARCíA The uniVersiTyLocated in Carson, just 13 miles south from LAX

and minutes from the South Bay beaches, California State University, Dominguez Hills sits on a 346-acre campus that shares space with the Home Depot

The University boasts an environment that provides a distinct advantage for its students by embracing the surrounding community. CSUDH’s diverse demographics are shown through every possible dimension: cultural, ethnic, age, gender, religious, economic and intellectual. Serving students locally, nationally and internationally, the Carson campus allows students to pursue a higher education while being able to develop the skills necessary for the working world after graduation. By creating a balance between the desired social atmosphere of a small campus and the cultural and academic possibilities available at a larger university, ample opportunities exist to quench the desire for intellectual development.

eDuCaTional DiVersiTyCal State Dominguez Hills embraces the diversity

of its students by sponsoring more than 70 student organizations ranging from Departmental/Professional and Recreation/Sports organizations to Cultural, Religious Service and Special Interest groups.

The University is divided into six distinct schools/colleges: College of Business Administration and Public Policy; College of Education; College of Extended and International Education; College of Health and Human Services; College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences; College of Arts & Humanities.

Opportunities to study abroad are available in seventeen countries including Chile, Japan, England, Mexico, Peru and France to name a few.

DisTanCe learningCSUDH also is a nationwide leader in distance

learning programs, which have been featured on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” and NBC-TV’s “Homepage.” Other off-campus programs that have made CSUDH the vibrant institution it has become are the statewide nursing program, the master’s of humanities and an online MBA program.

housingCal State Dominguez Hills holds a unique

opportunity for students by offering on-campus housing. It’s a convenient, safe and cost-effective resource to enhance the time spent at school. In contrast to the traditional residence halls or dormitories, University Housing is an apartment complex composed of 22 separate two-story buildings and two common buildings. All apartments are fully furnished and facilities

include recreation and meeting rooms, laundry facilities and a computer lab. On the complex grounds

are basketball and volleyball courts, a weight room and a picnic area, with grassy knolls and an exquisite landscape surrounding the buildings that create a perfect background for either studying or relaxing, or

ills CsuDh V.p. / Director of athletics

Dr. Susan E. Borrego was appointed as Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs in January of 2009, after serving as the Vice President for Planning and Enrollment Management since the summer of 2008.

As the Vice President, Borrego is responsible for several areas on campus including admissions, financial aid, housing, outreach services, public safety, student development, disabled student services, student activities and intercollegiate athletics. Among her primary tasks will be to develop and implement the University’s strategic enrollment plan as well as a comprehensive retention program.

Prior to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Borrego spent three years at fellow CCAA school Cal State Monterey Bay where she served in a similar capacity. Under her leadership, CSUMB experienced a 44 percent increase in freshmen enrollment, reversing a three year decline. Overall enrollment increased by 32 percent at the university during her time there.

Prior to working at CSUMB, Borrego served as Associated Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She previously was an Associate Dean/Director of Minority Student Affairs at the California Institute of Technology, where she also served as executive director of CALTECH Y, a nonprofit student activities center at the university.

Borrego is a scholar practitioner who has taught at the University of Southern California and University of Redlands. Her research and publications have concentrated on student learning, social class diversity, and the collaboration of academic affairs and students affairs to ensure student success.

Borrego holds a Ph.D. in education from the Claremont Graduate University.

Patrick Guillen assumed his position as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on November 1, 2005, after serving as the Assistant Athletics Director since 2002, and has since led the department to its most successful overall seasons since its inception in 1968. Guillen’s tenure at Cal State Dominguez Hills began in August of 1995 as the Director of Athletic Media Relations after coming to the Toros program from Vanguard University (formerly So. California College) in Costa Mesa, CA.

As the Director of Athletics, Guillen secured several new corporate partners, updated CSUDH’s corporate sponsorship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, hired CSUDH’s new volleyball and baseball coaches, oversaw the appointment of a new Faculty Athletics Representative, raised necessary funds for new

baseball, softball and volleyball/basketball bleachers, sold venue advertising, centralized and updated concessions, and formulated future fundraising ideas which have substantially increased CSUDH Athletics funding beginning in the 2006 season. Additionally, his efforts were instrumental in the annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classics, which consistently have increased their profits over the past five years under Guillen’s leadership.

Guillen serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Carson, as well as on both the CCAA Administrative and CCAA Championship Committees. He is also an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association, was named an NCAA Regional Advisory Committee member for women’s soccer and appointed the CCAA Sports Information liaison, and most recently was selected for a 3-year term on the Baseball Western Regional Advisory Committee, as well as a position on the Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Planning process that will chart the course of enrollment at CSUDH for 2010-2015.

In 2006, Guillen began his appointments on the CSUDH WASC Sub-Committee for Civic Engagement, as well as on the University Budget Committee (UBC), which recommends budget requests and allocations to the President of the University, two committees on which he continues to serve.

Guillen has been an integral part of an Athletics Department that has captured two NCAA Division II men’s soccer National Championships (including 2008), hosted the NCAA Division II Final Four women’s soccer championship, and first- and second-round NCAA Division II men’s soccer championships. In addition, Guillen initiated the negotiation process that brought the Home Depot Center to the Carson campus.

On the academic front, the overall student-athlete GPA has increased from 2.63 (04-05) to 2.67 (05-06) to 2.73 (06-07) to 2.78 (07-08) to an all-time high of 2.90 last year under Guillen’s leadership, while a record 82 student-athletes made the CSUDH Athletics fall 2009 honor roll, 54 were recognized by the NCAA as part of the 23rd Annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day, 76 were named to the spring 2010 honor roll, with 26 Toros being named to the 2009-10 CCAA’s All-Academic list.

Beginning with his Assistant Athletics Director/Media Relations responsibilities in 2002, Guillen had been responsible for fundraising, media, community and public relations, as well as the oversight of all home event management operations.

Prior to working in intercollegiate athletics, Guillen enjoyed a successful sales and marketing career in the healthcare industry, working as the Area Marketing Manager for what was then the largest privately-owned healthcare organization in the country, Comprehensive Rehabilitation Associates, Inc.

Born and raised in nearby Torrance, Guillen’s roots are fixed in Carson, having graduated from Carson High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management and Marketing from Vanguard University in 1987. Guillen is single and resides in Irvine.

Prior to his career in athletics, Mel worked at Virgin Records America from 1996-2002, with the last four years as a publicist. Before his stint at VRA, he began his public relations career at Atlantic Records after graduating from UCLA with a degree in English.

Mel enjoys copy-editing, playing unlimited arc slow pitch softball, and dog training, and is an avid fan of the Bruins, Dodgers, Lakers and Chargers. Married to the former Malu Pangan, the southern California natives have two children, Medina and Mathias. The Mirandas reside in Long Beach with their dog Mori.

Tom Weed begins his third year as the Assistant Sports Information Director after the previous two seasons at fellow CCAA school Cal State Monterey Bay, where he served in a similar capacity.

His day-to-day duties include being the contact for volleyball, cross country, women’s basketball, baseball and track & field, as well as the creation and maintenance of content on www.GoToros.com, design and layout of athletics publications including media guides, game programs, brochures and fliers, and statistical recording for all Toros sports.

The Lancaster native enjoys soccer, softball, baseball, golfing and Washington Huskies athletics, and on rare occasion can be seen as the man behind the mask in the Toro mascot outfit. At Bethel

Christian High School, he was a three-time letter winner in baseball and competed in city league soccer as a goalkeeper prior to transferring to CSU Monterey Bay.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is an NCAA Division II institution that competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Although CSUDH is one of the younger schools in the conference, we are one of the most athletically competitive and honored schools in the CCAA, with 27 conference titles and five national championships to date.

The Athletics Department was founded in 1968 with the inception of the school’s first intercollegiate team in men’s golf, which was founded by the Toros’ first ever Athletics Director, Dr. John Johnson. “Dr. J,” as he’s affectionately known, continues his role to this day as the head coach of the men’s golf team and currently is the oldest active coach in the NCAA - a true living legend, indeed!

In a letter dated April 1969, Chairman of the 2nd Ad Hoc Committee on College Symbols Thomas S. Bullock announced that the CSUDH student body voted on Cardinal and Gold as the school’s colors, and a bull to replace the existing “Gypsy Dancer” as its new mascot.

The bull, since referred to as the Toro, was derived from the “Dominguez Family history of cattle ranching,” and will also “be well adapted to team symbols, etc.” Luckily for both CSUDH and our newly-adapted school mascot, the volatile nature of a bull’s temperament deterred Chairman Bullock from keeping a live example on campus.
