Planting
TomatoesGrowing up on a farm you learn to do a lot of things simply by
observation. I watched my Mama plant tomatoes and she
always filled the hole with water before putting the little
seedlings in. Thats how my program has been...a process of
watching. Im pretty sure its how yours has been too. I had
never heard the word Serenity used in any way that was
applicable to anyones life much less my own until I entered
the rooms of Recovery. There I learned a lot of stuffmost of it
by observation, by listening and by trying to do what you do.
Faith was something quite unseeable though. I couldnt really
see it in your life I could hear you talk about it. I knew it was
there. But kind of like humility, when we talk about having itsometimes we wonder if we really do or not. Well that said, Ill
tell you the secret of faith. Its just lasting long enough to have
it. Yup thats the oldtimers wisdom. You put water in the
hole to nourish the little seedlings and then you wait. And
wait. In the meantime, you go on about your business trying to
stay sane in a world where everyone else is growing too.
My favorite saying from the rooms is When youre hurting just
be still and try not to bite yourself or anyone else. Seems simple
enough but when Im hurting its not as simple as it seems. KathiMacias article in this issue of The Gabriel talks a lot about me.
How I tried to water my own roots, and clean the weeds from
around my own soil, but its as difficult as it sounds. What has
helped a lot are those people in community that Rev. Joe talks
about that are SO helpful at bringing the water of their lives in
meetings to me and spotting that nasty weed I cant even see.
Thank you all. And Jim, Im not even going to talk about
Forgiveness thats something I had to be bearing a little fruit to
even get a hold of. But once I tasted itwow forgiveness has to be
better than summer watermelon! I hope you enjoy this seasonsGabriel. I designed it with you in mind.
Blessings to all,

Springtime is a Dangerous Time
Looking back, I believe the reason
I've always rebelled against New
Year's resolutions is because I
wasn't totally dedicated to
them. Thats what I told my
self. Unfortunately, this is what Icall Head Talk. It is a major issue
in those of us with compulsive or
i m p u l s i v e t h i n k i n g .
I a l w a y s f e l t s o m e w h a t
compulsive, like I should do it
because everyone was expected to
at least make one resolution. I had
good intentions, but good
i n t e n t i o n s d i d n ' t e q u a l
commitment. Secretly, I knew that
I would never commit to such a
ridiculous thing. Me, give up my
behavior, not on your life. I can't
recall ever having made a
resolution that I made at the
beginning of the year that was
important enough for me to follow
for a whole year. Yet, I'd find
mysel f making the same
resolutions again and again, just
for the sake of others.
This isn't to say that I haven't
made and stuck with resolutions,
but those were ones based on need
rather than time. For instance,
when my eating disorder
reappeared its head one spring, it
wasn't an question for me to say,
"Well, when the new year arrives,I'll work on this", otherwise keep
your distance. It was something I
had to deal with right then, so I
thought.
DESIRE IS ONE THING
WHATS THE OTHER?
It's true that we should desire a
lifestyle of service to God and
mankind, but these were just words that I was expected to
say. What does it mean to
surrender ourselves to God. You
have to be kidding! This sounds a
little like good works. I heard that
before. At the time I didnt really
know that good works will indeed
flow out of our lives. But good
works themselves can never pay
for our past sins. There isabsolutely nothing within our
human abilities that can ever be a
suitable payment for our wrong
behavior. Christ's provision alone
has brought for us victory over sin
through His shed blood on the
cross. Psalm 103:12.
Spring has arrived, and the world
around us has awakened from itsslumber. The whole earth is
breaking forth in a song of praise
to God. The cheerful chirping of
the birds, I wish they would shut
up, I need the sleep! the evidence
of new life springing forth in the
bright colors of flowers an
budding trees, and the renewed
warmth of the sun are a
reminders that winter's long night
is quickly ebbing. This is a time of
restlessness for the compulsive. It
is a time to kick up your heels and
look for new opportunity. It is this

choices are made. Why you ask,

dangers. Those dangers come
upon us without notice. It is
useless to name all the dangers
that we face because they are
specific to each of us. For
instance, one of my springtime
dangers is that I have had all
winter to think about how I canfix any situation that others may
find difficult. You see, Im
codependent, and I like to fix
people, as if they didnt have
enough to think about, and now I

A CIR Member's views on CONFLICT!!
A typical scenario that I have run into in practice isthat conflict establishes a moral dilemma such as My boyfriend is an alcoholic, he cant keep a job,he beats me, and I suspect that there are othergirlfriends! But I love him just the same?
Or, I lived with him for two years, and he chargesme rent? whats with this? The truth of thematter is that she cant seem to pin-point the cause
of her conflict. There is a war going on within an individual thatmakes statements such as the ones above. I saythis because conflict in relationships is totally self-centered. When one is involved in war, he or she isthinking only of self interests, which runs 180degrees counter to God's nature. God's nature isoutgoing. When one is engaged in war, all one isseeking to do is to preserve the self.
Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest ofrighteousness. James 3:18.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling andslander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and
compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just asin Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32.

What Grandkids Will Say!
After putting her
grandchildren to bed, a grandmother
changed into old slacks and a droopy
blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As
she heard the children getting more and
more rambunctious, her patience grew
thin. Finally, she threw a towel aroundher head and stormed into their
room, putting them back to bed with
stern warnings.
As she left the room, she heard the
three-year-old say with a trembling voice
"Who was THAT?"

You are a New Creation in Christ
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation;
old things have passed away;
behold, all things have become new
(2 Corinthians 5:17).
I had the joy and privilege of speaking to a
Celebrate Recovery group last night and, as
always, came away blessed. What a group of
Jesus-lovers! I believe one of the main reasons
for that is that they live out the truth of Jesuswords about those who have been forgiven much
also loving much.
These people know about the power of walking in
newness of life. We talk about that a lot in the
church, but do we really understand or practice
it? When I first became a Christian, I was so full
of joyand it showed! No one accused me of
having been baptized in vinegar, I guarantee you!
But as time went on, I found myself gettingcaught up in an ever growing to-do list. You know
the drill: memorize more scripture verses; attend
more Sunday school classes and Bible studies;
volunteer for more ministries; above all, learn
and utilize the language of Christianeze (i.e.,
anointing, unction, rapture, etc.)
Nothing wrong with any of these things, of
course; in fact, I highly recommend them (though
Id go easy on the Christianeze if I were you!).
The problem is that I began to substitute the true
newness of life that had initially given me so
much joy with activities that sapped that joy and
damaged my testimony. Can anyone relate?
When God says that were new creations, He
means it. We dont have to find ways to act
new; we simply have to be who God has already
declared us to be. And that, of course, only
happens in His presence because as new
creations we are now living His eternal life, not
our own temporal ones. We now choose to walk
as He walked, which included lots of time spent
with the Father.
Do you want to be assured that your joy will
remain full to overflowing? Do you want to
exhibit that new life that God has already given

you? Spend time with the Father. Cultivate your
love relationship with Him. Thats the only real
activity that is required of us as new creations.
And remember, when God says that old things
have passed away and all things have become
new, He means it. We dont have to work or strive
to earn newness of lifewe received it when we
received Jesus as Savior. And thats a truth thatenables us to rest and rejoice, no matter what
trials or circumstances come our way.

How To Post Images on the CIRHow To Post Images on the CIR
Discussion BoardsDiscussion Boards
Here are step-by-step directions as to how to include an image in your CIR Forum post.
1. You have to have a place (not CIR) online to store your images. Photobucket is a good one. .Create an account
and upload following that site's directions to an album there. Follow the directions there or use any image host
on the internet that will allow you to link directly to the image.
2. Upload your pictures. Jpegs work best and don't let them be too big.
Remember if your screen is 1000 pixels wide a picture of 400 pixels wide is
huge. Then click on the picture you want to post. Copy the url of the
image you want to post.
3. On the CIR forum begin your message. If you don't see the smiley face
icon at the top, then click on "Go to full reply screen". Then it will look
like the image on the right.
4. Almost there! When you're ready to put your image in... click on the 4th
icon from the left that looks like a little picture. (see arrow below).
Choose the float... if you play with this you can see what they do.
5. Paste in the link you copied in step #2 above, It will look like this.
6. Now this is REALLY IMPORTANT! Click PREVIEW POST, not submit to
check to see if your post is okay and the picture is okay. If it isn't you can
change it in the entry box just like normal. If it looks okay, then you can
click SUBMIT and you're all done!
WORD OF CAUTION: Now I've posted a lot of images in this post and I think
Obie MIGHT let me get away with it... BUT remember to conserve ourservers and don't overdo with the use of images in your post. Also, while I
use photobucket, you can use any place to store your images as long as you can get a link to the picture directly.
I can tell you already that the CIR gallery will not work. You need to have an url that looks something like this:
For more detailed instructions and larger example images see the original post on the Forum at

One day after visiting the grave
of my brother, I began to stroll
through the cemetery and found
the grave of woman whom I had
grown up with. Not only was
she buried there but also her
teenage son. As I stood there
reflecting on what could of went
wrong in their lives, I noticed as
two car loads of young men
parked and exited their
vehicles. I waited for a few
seconds as the men stood
behind me and then I turned
and ask them Was this
someones mother? One of the
men stepped forward and said
No, her son was our friend.
My response was I see then I
proceeded to share with them
that I had grown up in the same
Santa Ana Ca. neighborhood asthe mother and began to
mention names of her family
members.
This seemed to release a little
tension in the air and then I
asked them Did they die in a
car accident? The spokesman of
the group once again stepped
up and said No, our friend waskilled by the cops, and the
mother? I questioned. She
died two days later of a broken
heart, was his rely. Wow, those
words were thick and powerful
as they entered into my mind to
be deciphered and to be quite
frank, this
revelation very much
grieved my spirit to know that
the once giggling little girl that I
first met in grade school had
died from a state of utter
hopelessness. I thanked them
for allowing me to hear their
story, and I commended them
for their loyalty to their fallen
friend, and then made my exit.
Life for the most part is
beautiful and exciting, but
s o m e t i m e s u n e x p e c t e d
tragedies can bring us to our
knees in despair. There aresituations which can usher a
person into an unfathomable
realm, where misguided
emotions lead its victims deeper
into the storm driven waves of
hopelessness. The great
Psalmist of Israel King David
writes of his own
personal experiences in
Psalms 55 4-7 My heart is in
anguish within me, and the
terrors of death have fallen
upon me. Fear and trembling
come upon me, and horror has
overwhelmed me. I said, Oh,
that I had wings like a
dove! I would fly away and
be at rest.
Fly Away
King David, like most of
mankind was tempted by the
misconception, of thinking that
running away from grief and
pain is a cure all solution. This
idea has proven itself, to be
worthless, devastating, and only
delays the healing process.
History has given us many goodexamples of people who have
endured painful experiences,
with godly character, dignity
and honor (read the Book of
Job), but on the other hand, we
also have witnessed that mans
antidote for relief has not
changed over the ages,, for the
love of money, extra marital
affairs and drugs/alcohol have
ruled over the nations and its
subjects have forsaken all to
come under the influence its
merciless spell. This vain

attempt to somehow fly away
and experience rest has proven
itself futile, for after the
temporary euphoric rush, we
once again found ourselves
facing reality square in the eye.
Keep Connected to People
One of the most valuable gifts
that God has given us is
community. When God created
Adam in the Garden of Eden, he
stated It is not good for man to
be alone. So he formed Eve
from a rib taken from Adam
(Genesis 32:18,-22). Scriptures
tells us that No temptation
(adversity, affliction, trouble)
has overtaken you such as
is common to man (others have
traveled through that storm,
allow them to show you the way
to get through it - * writers
insert); and God is faithful
(true, sure, to be trusted), who
will not allow you to be tempted
beyond what you are able, but
with temptation will provide the
way of escape also, so that you
will be able (having the means
or power to be or act) to endure
(continue to exist) it (1 Cor.
10:13.
Serving Brings Healing
During one phase of myChristian service, as a Chaplain,
I had the privilege to be allowed
to walk through the death
process of many beautiful
people. We prayed, read Holy
Scripture, talked, laughed and
did a great deal of listening. So
many times it was they that
ministered to me. God
admonishes us to; Bear one
anothers burdens, and thereby
fulfill the law of Christ.
Let us not lose heart in doing
good, for in due time we will
reap (*- a good harvest - writers
insert -) if we do not grow weary
(exhausted in strength,
endurance, vigor, or freshness).
So then, while we have
opportunity (dont miss it! -
writers insert!), let us do good
to all people, and especially to
those who are of the household
of faith (Gal. 6:2, 9-10).
Keep Connected to God
Its been said that one of the
greatest assets that King David
possessed was his ability to fall
forward. By this, I mean in all
his tragic experiences such as
the death of his infant son (2
Sam. 12 15-23), and the
rebellion and death of another
(2 Sam. 15 & 18). He always ranand fell into the arms of his
merciful and loving God. Even
when he suffered big time for
his moral failures (2 Sam. 11:1-
27), he continued to hold onto
the hand of God.
How blessed is the man/
woman whose strength is in
You. In whose are the highways
to Zion! Passing through the
valley of Baca (weeping) they
make it a spring; The early rain
also covers it with blessings.
They go from strength tostrength; Every one of them
appears before God in Zion
(PS.84:5-7).
Come As You Are
Lifes unexpected tragedies are

The Prophet Isaiah paints a very
eloquent verbal picture of those
who have yielded to Gods

those who wait (hope) for

They will run and not get tired.
They will walk and not become

Recovery Knowledge & Facts
Alcohol Recovery Update
More than a quarter of drinkers in England who exercise
regularly do so in an attempt to make up for bingeing on
alcohol, according to a survey published on Thursday. Drinkers
exercise to combat binges.
Basic Anxiety, Panic, OCD, PSTD, Social Phobia Info -
National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH)
People with OCD who fear dirt and germs are encouraged to get
their hands dirty and wait increasing amounts of time before
washing them. The therapist helps the person cope with the
anxiety that waiting produces; after the exercise has been
repeated a number of times, the anxiety diminishes.

Researchers also are working to define the basic processes of
the disorders, which should help identify better treatments. For
example, is anorexia the result of skewed body image, self
esteem problems, obsessive thoughts, compulsive behavior, or
a combination of these? Can it be predicted or identified as a
risk factor before drastic weight loss occurs, and therefore
avoided?Obese people with binge-eating disorder often have coexisting
psychological illnesses including anxiety, depression, and
personality disorders. In addition, links between obesity and
cardiovascular disease and hypertension are well documented.

How Do We Grow?
How do we grow...as we grow old?
When we reach the point of no return,
When we find our bridge to youth is burned,
Do we cease to grow, just involute?
Will scenes of sylvan lass and flute
Playing tunes to make us dance
Fill our minds with sweet enchants?
As children prance and skip and skate,
The future kings and queens of state,
Can we absorb the merriment?
Though on a slope of steep descent
Will we, gleeful, treasure signs
That little ones transcend our times?
And then there is the spirit life
Whose age, unmeasured by the years,
Is meted out by leaps and bounds,
The leap of Faith...unbound by fears.
And though the sun on westward path
Presents a twilight shadowy, dim,
Faith still grows and leaps, then bounds
To grasp the Light beyond the rim.

Here is a poem written by someone
in prison that was sent to CIR:
can I have a moment of silencefor the addict that will die tonight
for the alcoholic who day after
day is losing the fight
for babies born to our disease that
will fight all of their life
not knowing recovery's possible
and that they have the right
to belong with us in our
fellowship yes part of our alliance
where we come to seek comfort
happiness not to mention
guidance
from one another here everyone is
living in reliance
in our community we have a
voice where others demand
silence
I'm only asking for a moment for
us blessed to discover
even though it's uphill and
winding there is a path to recover
and we're all ascending together
side by side sisters and brothers
progress not perfection when
falling we're there for one another
alone I can't but together we can
rise to top this
I wanna aide my fellow addict
who needs help to stop this
disease spirituality I can help the
atheist and agnostic
I've lived it I've been there, I have
experience on the topic
a moment of silence please for
God's miracles remaining
anonymousone that showed me I lack the
ability to live autonomous
and our fellowship where the
number of us who recover is
monstrous
growing daily thankfully cause the
number dying's preposterous
it's a miracle we have meetings
where we find comfort and
support
that through drugs and alcohol we
have endlessly searched for
it's a miracle I'm alive today in
this life that I have torn
realizing there's nothing worth
leaving or losing family for
what's more I was proud never
stealing from my family
but I never understood I stole
their right to live happily
from everything I tried and denied
life declined rapidly
they were forced to see me living
life missing struck with apathy
a moment of silence for strength
to find hope after dope
hope after all the damage I've
caused for the ability to cope
recovery's tough but the tough are
in recovery and it shows
I'll fall for anything if I'm not
standing for something this I
know
although most of our actions were
usually unintentional
they affected many around us thisdisease is two dimensional
we caused so much pain and
suffering all of it's consequential
through sobriety though it'll get
better life can be special
I need a moment when reliving
the best hug of my life
I'm cuffed and shackled my mom
hugging me tight as she cries
in front of a whole court room
seeing this when I close my eyes
I have to cry telling you I wasn't
blown away would be a lie
every night I thank God for
another day down another day
sober
even though I'm in prison I know
my life is far from over
thank you for meeting my needs
today and that I'm awake
thank you for the knowledge of
your will and the strength to
apply it
with all that said, please join me
in a moment of silence...

Ever wonder how those big old
oaks got that wayor how that person in your
meeting got 6 months
or 10 or 20 or even 50 years of
abstinent recovery?
This month in the CIR Step Study on Tuesday Night we had Lesson 35 which was our last lesson in the Joe
and Charlie Series. If youve not listened to these Step/Big Book studies we whole-heartedly recommend it.
Even if youre not sure about following the stepsis it the right path for you? Does it really work? What
does it have to do with my Christianity? Listen and then make up your mind. As apropos the last lesson dealt with
Step 12 which says:
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps we tried to carry this message to
other alcoholics (fill in your addiction or problem here), and to practice these principles in all
our affairs.
Here is an excerpt from Lesson 35 of the Joe and Charlie Study. We hope you find it helpful. [Insertions in brackets
are ours]. ClaraT & Cindy
The 12 step has three pieces in it, very briefly, the first part is the greatest promise in the book:
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these stepswe tried to carry this message to other
alcoholics (fill in your addiction or problem here), and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
I feel things Ive never felt before. I feel love, patience, tolerance, compassion and good will toward my fellow
man. Before AA I could have cared less about you. Oh yeah you could have some, but I always got mine first. I dont
feel that way anymore.
I believe things Ive never believed before. I believe God is a kind and loving God. I believe He stands ready to
help any human being, anywhere in the world, the instant theyre ready to give up their own self-will and turn to him.
When I came here I thought He was hell-fire and brimstone. I thought he was a God of justice. Thank God Hes not a
god of Justice. If he was I wouldnt be here today would I? Some of you guys wouldnt be here if he was. Surely, surely
He is pure mercy, pure love. I believe that with all my heart.
I can do things I could never do before. By golly I can stay sober. I never could do that before. Because of the
fact that I can stay sober I can do many, many, many things that I never dreamed I could do. Like being here. Going

kind of spiritual awakening.
Now Im charged though with a responsibility. There really are no free rides. You do have to pay for what you receive. Im
now charged with the responsibility of carrying this message to other alcoholics. Not a message. Not the message. Not
some message. This message. What is this message? Having had a Spiritual awakening as the result of these steps. Im
not like I used to be.
Now if youre in AA [or CIR or OA or whatever your own area of recovery is] today and youre all screwed up and youre
not feeling good. If youve been doing a little drinking [gambling, surfing porno, cutting, or ____] or even thinking about
doing a little drinking [fill-in your own blank here] I know exactly where youre coming from. Thats where I came from
too. I applied these first eleven steps and I had a spiritual awakening and Im not that way anymore. And if you dont want
to be that way anymore, then you apply the first eleven steps and you wont be that way anymore either. Youll have a
spiritual awakening. Thats the only message that AA [NA, OA, SA, AlAnon, etc] has got.

Many of us tend to live in
the pastthinking
about what caused our
present condition, whatever that
may be. Oftenwe continually, and
compulsively, keep trying to find
the cause of something or why
someone or something is
interfering with our life.
Most people understand that a
l i t t le nosta lgia ( feel-good
memories) may be fine, but too
much can be a signal that there is a
problem. Those that have been
abused, either physically or
mentally, may, for reasons of their
own, hold fast to the notion that
the position they are in today, is a
direct result of that trauma.
Baring any physical trauma, such
as a car accident, or falling off a
cliff, or some such thing, I am
talking about the kind of trauma
that is felt as an emotionallypainful experience. This kind of
trauma once experienced is also in
the past.
For example, you may have had
the experience of strongly reacting
to a difficult circumstance - such
as a relationship breakup, or the
way a coworker treats you and
you cannot figure out why you
reacted so strongly. In some
instances, childhood traumas may
be activating and fueling th
current reaction. These symptoms
often follow the individual into
adulthood, creating potentially
and significant emotional,
behavioral, and relationshi
problems.
For example, if a parent is verbally
or physically abusive to their child,
he or she may develop the beliefthat Im not safe. If a parent
ignores their child, he or she may
conclude, Im not lovable. These
are powerful beliefs and these
beliefs are often the underlying

sources of anxiety, depression, and
many other symptoms. Again, the
key to understanding is the fact
that no matter how traumatic the
events may seem to have been,
they are in the past and theindividual cannot undo or alter
that experience.
It is a fact for everyone--We cannot
change one thing about the past.
We can only change what is
happening to us in the present.
This process requires that we
change some of our own beliefs.
Not all of them, but surely we mustchange those that are compulsive
and repetitive. These include all
addictive or compulsive behaviors
focused on alcohol, drugs, food,
sex, gambling, and relationships.
THE FINAL SOLUTION
The final solution requires the
following:
Things do not change: we do
- Henry David Thoreau
If you want deeply rooted change,
you need to apply deep rooted
methods. - J. Goldstein
Changing ones beliefs does not
magically come about; you have to
work at setting your spiritual life in
order. WOW, you mean that I
cant just wish the changes into
existence, and that would be
enough?
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO
KNOW GOD?
How important is it to know God?
We cannot ignore this vital
question. It demands an answer!
John has that answer :
And this is life eternal, that they
might know thee the only true
God, and Jesus Christ, whom thouhast sent. John 17:3
As used here, eternal life is defined
as knowing God! John implies an
intimate relationship with God that
matures over a lifetime. Each
party knows each other well. It
also requires that we be always on
the path of obedience. This
intimacy takes time to develop,
especially considering the issues
that addictive behavior generates.
There are those of us who have
spent time in frustration trying to
serve two gods.
John explains, that we should not
love the things of this world
(objects, things and behaviors):
Love not the world, neither the
things that are in the world. If
any man love the world, the love
of the Father is not in him. 1
John 2:15
Now that this is clear in our mind,
we may assume that change comes
about in an orderly fashion--first
God, and then everything will fall
into place. Of course, this is
difficult to understand becausecompulsive behavior demands
immediate fulfillment. The
Addictive Mental Process (AMP) is
ongoing and relentless. It drives us
through varied pleasurable events.
No matter what that event is, the
intended result is always the same
that of achieving complete
satisfaction. Cant be done, no
matter how hard we try.
One more thing to consider in ou
study of the Biblical explanation o
addiction: addictions can be
considered as bondage to the rule
of a substance, activity, or state o
mind, which then becomes the
center of the individuals life. Thi
process will insulate itself from the
truth such that even bad
consequences do not bring abou
repentance. This defensiv
mechanism denial - leads to
further estrangement from God.

MEDICINE
Complementary methods andalternative approaches heal
naturally, and are useful in
healing from:
past trauma, both physical
and mental.
Healing can also be evidenced
in an individual's coping
mechanisms, which are
generally the source of their
difficulties. However, healing
can not effect what has
happened in the past.
It is how one perceives and
deals with a past event in
present time, now that is
important.
You must also consider genetics, disease, internal energy
imbalance, accidents, or life
experience as potential problem
sources. These can also affect
what treatment options are
applied. In this regard, God has
prepared specific teachings and
words of authority. John 14:2.
We must have a heart that is
ready and willing to forgive and
f o r g e t p a s t m i s t a k e s .
Throughout life, we will make
many mistakes. We will need to
develop a nature that is willing
to encourage and forgive.
MY PAST EXPERIENCES
I have been in the healing
profession for forty plus years, and have seen and treated
thousands of people, with a
variety of physical and
emotional complaints. I think
that the #1 problem is not the
fact that a trauma has occurred,
but rather that the individual
could not forgive a pastgrievance, or for that matter, a
continuing trauma. Forgiveness
is one of the chief characteristics
we must develop if we are to
become children of God.
Notice, I did not say forget. This
is because, past events cannot
be changed or altered.
In this world, it is easy to see
that a major cause of conflict
and trauma is an unwillingness
to extend forgiveness. At home,
the lack of forgiveness causes
family problems to arise over
and over again until divorce or
violence erupts. However, we
can learn from past events. We
can learn to forgive the past
through contemplative prayer.
Be still and know that I am
God -Psalm 46:10
The Centering Prayer centers on
God. This form of meditation
can be traced back to the earliest

centuries of Christianity.
Centering prayer is a remarkably
simple method that opens one to
Gods gift of contemplative
prayer. Its practice expands ones
receptivity to the presence and
activity of God in ones life. It is a
distillation of the practice of
monastic spirituality into two
relatively short periods of prayer
each day. Here is a way to begin
the process of Centering Prayer in
your daily life.
Choose a sacred word as thesymbol of your intention to
consent to Gods presence and
action within.
Sitting comfortably with eyes
closed, settle briefly and silently
and introduce the sacred word
as the symbol of your consent to
Gods presence and action
within.
When you become aware of
thoughts, return ever so gently
to the sacred word.
At the end of the prayer period,
remain in silence with eyes
closed for a couple of minutes.
I cannot emphasize this enough.
Because of the repetitive nature of
our addictions, we often do nothave time for anything else.
However if you are sincere about
wanting to straighten out your life
you must develop prayer that puts
God in your life. Ephesians 4:22-
24. So get rid of your old self,
which made you live as you used
to -the old self, the past which
was destroying your self by
practicing deceitful desires. Your
hearts and minds must be made
completely new. You must put on
the new self which is being
created in Gods likeness.
SUMMARY
The past events in our life are just
that. We cannot undo what has
happened no matter hard we try. We cannot change anything that
has already happened. However,
we can learn from our activities
and our past behaviors. We can
see that our past life is in a
meltdown state.
This meltdown state closely
resembles Step one through three
of the 12 Steps:
Step one read Romans 7:18.
Step two read Philippians 2:13.
Step three read Romans 12:1.
KNOWING GOD can be a
wonderful experience.
Principal One is that God love
you and offers you a wonderfu
plan for your life. This plan is so
much better than how you have
been living.
Second principal on the road toknowing God is to know that ou
past behaviors have separated u
from an intimate relationship
with Him. Deep down, o
attitude may be one of active
rebellion or passive indifference
toward God and his ways, but its
all evidence of what the Bible calls
sin. The result of sin in our lives is
death; a spiritual separation fromGod. Although we may try to ge
close to God through our own
effort, we inevitably fail.
The Third Principal is to know
that Jesus Christ is Heavenly
Fathers only provision for the
mistakes and behavior we have
made in our past. Just knowing
what Jesus has done for us an
what he is offering us is no
enough. To have a righ
relationship with God, we need to
welcome him into our life.
The Fourth Principal is accepting

Complimentary Medicine. I think
of the word complimentary as one
method helping another method.
There are herbs available to help
heal damaged tissue. For
instance, compulsive use of
alcohol will result in damage to
the brain, liver, heart, pancreas,
lungs, kidneys, and other organs.
Alcohol infiltrates every organ and
tissue system in the body within
minutes after it passes into the
blood stream. The strength of the
drink has a significant effect on
absorption rates, with higher
concentrations of alcohol resulting
in more rapid absorption. Pure
alcohol is generally absorbed
faster than diluted alcohol, which,
in turn, is absorbed faster than
wine or beer.
But didnt we know all of this? A
note: Sugar in high proportion is
present in all compulsive
behavior. For instance, Tobacco is
cured with sugar. Sugar is the
metabolic product of alcohol, in
other words alcohol is sugar
waiting to happen.
Interestingly, kudzu contains
isoflavones that have weak
estrogenic activity. Kudzu's is
traditionally used to treat
menopausal hot flashes and has
also been found to interact with
the drug methotrexate.
THERE YOU HAVE IT
As simple as it may seem, we who
are compulsive and who do not
always make good choices, have
lots of work ahead of us. If there
any questions, I will be glad to
answer them, as time will allow.
