Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Study of the scriptures supplies what is needed to endure. Our

study brings with it a spirit that affirms our faith and causes us to

recommit to our covenants. Scripture study also provides

understanding of eternal principles that we can invoke to respondcorrectly to life's questions and trials. The lessons of the

scriptures also heighten our sensitivities to threats to our souls

and our families. There are few things we can do from which the

rewards are so disproportionate to the efforts.

This year our emphasis is the Old Testament. That is a difficult

curriculum, and challenging to understand. We pray you willnonetheless persist in this study. The Old Testament gives us

understanding of common ground we have with other faiths.

That understanding is useful when we undertake to share the

gospel with others. The Old Testament also provides a

perspective that allows us more to appreciate the atonement. We

find the Old Testament prophets prophesying of the Messiah.

We find the Old Testament peoples urgently anticipating the

Savior so they could receive a remission of their sins. They

understood the need for a mediator, a Messiah. They knew they

could not be worthy of God's presence without an atonement.

Their understanding and appreciation of the atonement fortifies

our understanding and appreciation.

We pray this year you will claim for yourselves and your

families the significant blessings of scripture study.

of the Lord, when the Messiah cometh; for he shall be made

The message of the Old Testament is the message of Christ and hiscoming and his atonement. . . . I do not think that there is a more simpleor clear and relevant explanation of the Old Testament message thanthe one written in [ 2 Nephi chapters 25 to 33 ]. It would seem to me thata careful, prayerful study of these chapters would be a requirement for anyone who wanted to understand and teach the message of the OldTestament. In these chapters Nephi sifted out the important from the

unimportant. He also explained how these teachings are important to uswho live in the latter days… The message of the Old Testament is themessage of salvation and the commandments which we must obey inorder to partake of the salvation offered
