Travelinginhorse-drawncarriagesandbuggies,farmersarrivedinRaleighforthefirst-everNorthCarolinaStateFaironTuesday,Oct.18,1853.TheStateAgricultur-

alSocietyhostedthefairwithhopesofteachingandentertainingfarmersfromacrossthestate.Fastforward157yearsandfairgoerswillfindthatNorthCarolinastillproudlycelebratesitsagriculturalheritageattheannualfallevent.

Originally,theFairactedasavenuetoshowcaseagriculturalchangessuchasnewequipmenttechnolo-

giesandproductiontechniques.BecausemostNorthCarolinianslivedinruralareaswithlimitedaccesstocommunication,theFairprovidedavenuetobringfarmerstogetherforeducationalcollaboration.TheStateFairnowaimstoeducateconsumers.Withmidwayrides,deep-friedfoodstands,fairgamesandinteractiveexhibits,theStateFairhaschangedquiteabit.Howev-er,thegoalsofagriculturaleducationandculturalpres-ervationstillexist.FairgoersexploreNorthCarolina’sagriculturalheritagethroughouttheFairinplacessuchasthe:

Today,thefairisanexciting11-dayeventcelebratingNorthCarolina’spast,presentandfuture.The2010N.C.StateFairthemeencouragesfairgoerstocel-ebratewhat’sgreat.Withcontests,cows,concerts,crafts,chickens,corndogsandmuchmore,theN.C.StateFairwillalwaysbeacelebrationofgreatagriculture,greattradition,greatinnovation,greateducationandgreatpeople.

WhenFairM)anager,J.S.DortonlaunchedtheVillageofYesteryearexhibitin1951,hemaynothaveimaginedthevarietyofcraft-

ersitwouldonedayhouse.Hisvisionwassimplytoshowcaseandpreserveheritagecraftsandskills.Forthepasteightyears,origamiartistSusanHansenhasproudlydemonstratedhertalentwhilesellingherbrightlycoloredpapercranes,rabbits,boxes,sailboatsandflowerstoeagerfairgoers.

TheRaleighresidenthasprac-ticedorigamifor20years.

AlthoughorigamioriginatedineasternAsiaduringthesixthcentury,itisnowpracticedallovertheworld.

“Everypartoftheworldhascreateddifferentpaperfolds—thepaperairplaneandfortunetellerareuniqueAmericanfolds,”Hansensaid.“Contrarytopopularbelief,paperfoldingalsohasdeeprootsinNorthCarolina.Longago,schoolteacherswhowereresponsibleforchildrenofmanyageswouldteachorigami.”

Hansen,aswellasotherartistsandcraftsmenintheVillageofYesteryear,encouragefairgoerstoappreciateage-oldartsandcrafts,justasJ.S.Dortonenvisioned.

“Ilovetalkingtopeopleandsharingmyart.ThevarietyofartintheVillageofYesteryearisfascinating,”Hansensaid.

Hansen’sfavoriteorigamifoldisthecrane,whichhasmorethan20folds.InJapaneseculture,thecraneisasacredbirdrepresentingloyalty,beautyandpeace.Ac-cordingtoaJapanesecustom,anyonewiththepatiencetofold1,000papercraneswillbegrantedonewish.Hansenhasfoldedover30,000andmakesthesamewishaftereachgroupoffolds.

Whenitcomestofarmingtechnology,NorthCarolinahascomealongway.PriortotheCivilWar,farmershadyettopracticescientificagri-

culture—agriculturalproductiontestedandproventhroughsci-entificstudy.Today,researchandtechnologicalimprovementshaveadvancedagricultureinthestateand,asaresult,NorthCarolinaranksamongthemostagriculturallydiversestatesinthenation.

Asfarmershaveexpandedtheireffortstomeetthegrow-ingdemandforagricultur-alproducts,theynowrelyonfarmmachinerymorethanever.Fromtheinven-

tionofthemechanicalreap-erandthesteelplowinthe

1800stothegasoline-poweredandair-conditionedtractorsinthe

1900s,farmmachineryhasundergoneanevolutionofimprovement.

TheAntiqueFarmMachineryexhibitattheN.C.StateFairdisplaysacollec-tionofvintagefarmtoolsrangingfromtraditionalspinningwheelstoagedhandreapers.TheexhibitalsofeaturesanoldmilkbottledisplayandmorethanadozenAllis-Chalmers,Farmall,JohnDeereand

SilverKingtractorsfromthe1930sthroughthe1950s.

ClydeRiggs,exhibitsuperintendent,hasbeeneducatingfairgoersaboutNorthCarolina’sagriculturalmachineryfornearly20years.“Youngandoldfairgoersareattractedtotheexhibitformanyreasons,”saidtheDur-hamCountyresident.“Olderfolkshavepersonalmemoriesofcertainitems,whereasyoungerfolkshavequestions.Ienjoysharinghis-toryandtellingstoriesofmychildhoodexperiencesonthefarm.”

Therapiddevelopmentoffarmmachinerybeganwiththeshifttowardlarge-scalefarming.Inno-vationssuchasbuildingequipmentwithsteelratherthaniron,andusingrubbertiresratherthansteelwheels,markimportantdevelopmentsinthehistoryoffarmingequipment.

Today,farmingequipmentisbuilttodomoreworkinlesstime,tobesaferandtorequirelessupkeep.Manytractorsarenowequippedwithincreasedhorsepower,automatedsteering,LCDscreens,camerasandGlobalPositioningSystems.

“Newtractortechnologiesspeedupandsimplifythefarmingprocessbyde-creasinghumanerror,”saidBobbyCummings,aMasseyFergusonrepresentative.“Withoutmodernmachinery,farmerswouldnotbeabletoefficientlyproduceenoughfoodforthegrowingpopulation.”

Likemany9-year-olds,NoahGuthriehashisshareofhouse-holdchores.However,thereisoneresponsibilitythatis

morefunthanworkforthefifth-grader—beingassistantchefinthekitchen.

Cookingalongsidehismotherandfather,theGarnerresidenthasdevelopedapassionforculinaryartwhilelearningtopreparehealthymealsanddeliciousdesserts.

Noah’sdedicationtoculinaryexcellenceresultedinthesweettastofsuccesswhenhewonfirstplaceintheMakeitwithMalt-O-Mealcookingcontestatthe2009N.C.StateFair.

“Eversincehewasknee-high,Noahhasbeenmorethanwillingtohelpinthekitchen,”saidTammyGuthrie,Noah’smother.“Noahhasasweettoothandenjoyspreparingtreatssuchascookies,cakesandpies,butweneverimaginedthathewouldwinsuchacompetitivecontest.”

Thewinningrecipe,CinnamonToastersAppleDelight,in-cludedcrispNorthCarolinaapples,asugarcookiepouch,butterandCinnamonToastersbreakfastcereal.

Theyoungchefimaginedthedessertlongbeforethe2009PremiumBookwaspublished.Afterthereciperuleswerereleased,Noahadaptedthepietotheguidelinesoutlinedbycontestofficials.Hespentanentireyearperfect-ingtherecipebyaskingfamilyandfriendstobeofficialtastetesters.

“Thesponsoredcookingcontestsareopentopeopleofallageswithvaryingdegreesofexperi-ence,”saidLisaPrince,whoheadsupthecookingcontests,“AndwewerethrilledwhenNoahwonbe-causewehopethathissuccesswillencouragemorechildrentoenter.”

TheGuthriefamilydidnotexpecttheiryoungestsontobringhomeablueribbon.

“IwassoshockedthatIcried,”TammyGuthriesaid.“Ithinkitisincrediblethatfiveoutofsixjudgesselectedhispieasthewinnerfromnearly100dishes.”

ThewinearnedNoahablueribbon,anofficialMalt-O-Mealapron,$100andpersonalsat-isfaction.Hisreactiontothewinwasdifferentthanhismom’s—hecouldn’ttakethesmileoffhisface.

Inordertobetterunderstandthestylesandmethodsof

cooking,Noahhasexpandedhispart-timehobbyintoanacademicendeavor.Aspartofhishomeschoolcurriculum,hehaschosentotakeanelec-tivecourseinbasicculinaryskills.

“Ienjoylearningaboutthevari-ouscuttingtechniquesanddifferentseasonings,”saidthebuddingchef.“Ilearnedthatyouuseaparingknifetocutvegetablesandacarvingknifetocutmeat.Iwouldsaythatcookingisoneofmyfavoritesub-jects.”

Noahhasalsolearnedthevalueoflocalandhomegrownproducts.Intheirbackyard,theGuthrieshavetwogardens:afamilygardenandapersonalgardenfortheblue-ribbonchef.Ineachgarden,NoahGuthrieisresponsibleforwateringandtend-ingthetomatoes,corn,gourds,okra,water-melon,cantaloupeandcucumbers.

Thefamilyalsopurchasesrawgraintogrindintoflour.

“Wegrindourownflourandgrowfruitsandvegetablestoteachoursonstheimportanceofnutritiouseating,”saidTammyGuthrie.“WearethrilledthatNoah

hasexpressedinterestinlearninghowtouselocallygrownproducetoprepareappetizingmealsforthefamily.”

Withtheresponsibilityoftendingtwobackyardbeehives,the12-year-oldisnotexaggeratingentirely;maybejuststretchingthedefinitionofpet.

Threeyearsago,JoshuaandhisfathervisitedabeekeepingexhibitandclassattheMuseumofNaturalSciencesinRaleigh.Eversince,Joshuacan’tgetenoughofthebee’sbuzz.

“WhenIsawtheactivehiveduringthemuseumclass,IknewthatIwantedtobeabee-keeper,”theGarnerresidentsaid.“Theinternalstructureandsocialorder

ofthehiveweresointerestingthatIcouldn’twaittolearnmore.”

Theyoungbeekeeperreceivedhisfirsthivethroughahomeschoolcooperativeprogramfocusedonteachingthesweettradetoanewgeneration.

“Inthepast,themajorityofbeekeeperswereolderfolks,”saidDonHopkins,apiaryinspectionsupervisorfortheN.C.DepartmentofAgricultureandConsumerServices.“Today,themoreexperiencedbeekeepersareteachingyoungadultsandchildrenthetrade.Beekeepingisbecomingquitetrendy.”

Thetrendmaybeontheuptickbecauseoftherecurringsyndrome,ColonyCollapseDisorder.Thedisordercausesbeestomysteriouslyandunexpectedlydisap-pearfromahive.

“ColonyCollapseDisorderhasledtoanincreasedawarenessofthe

beepopulation,”Hopkinssaid.“Manyfamiliesbeginbeekeep-ingoutofconcern,butquicklygrowtolovethehobby.”

Joshua’shiveshavesufferedfromthedisordertwice.Heisnowonhisthirdhive.

“NoonecanexplainthecausesofCol-onyCollapseDisorder,”Joshuasaid.“Myhiveshadplentyofpollen,broodandeverythingnecessarytosupportlife,butthebeesstillleft.”

Eachyear,theN.C.StateFairhostsbeekeepingexhibitsintheExpoBuildingtoinformNorthCaroliniansaboutthehoneybeepopulation.AlthoughColony

CollapseDisorderhasaffectedmanybeekeepers,thenumberofbeeandhoneyexhibitorsandexhibitsissteadilyincreasing.In2007,therewere80exhibi-

torsand207exhibits.In2009,therewere144and611,respectively.Joshuawillbeamongthemthisyearasafirst-timecompetitor.

“WhenIgotmyfirsthive,Iwouldneverbearoundthemwithoutprotectiveclothing,”Joshuasaid.“NowIsitandwatchthemeverydaywithoutit.Themoreyou’rearoundthem,themoreyougetusedtothemandthemoretheygetusedtoyou.”

Joshuacollectshoneyandbeeswaxfromhishivetwiceayear.Asanaspiringentre-preneur,hestartedabusinesscalledGuthrieBrothersBees.Althoughheusuallygivesfam-ilyandclosefriendshoney,onedayhehopestosellitforprofit.Hehasdesignedjarlabelsandisworkingondesigningbusinesscards.

PriortotheStateFair,manybeekeep-erspreparetheirhoneyfortheFaircom-petitions.BeekeepersfromNorthCaro-linaenterpurehoney,creamedhoney,beeswaxandmead,orhoneywine,withhopesofwinningablueribbon.

“2010shouldbeagoodyearforhoneyflow,”Hopkinssaid.“Wearere-

allylookingforwardtothecom-petitions.Theyshouldbea

rathersweetsurprise.”

JoshuaisnostrangertocompetingattheFair.Lastyearheen-teredthebeekeepingphotographycompe-titionandthesmallfurniturecompetition.Hetookhomesecond

placeinthesmallfurni-turecompetitionforanart

boxmadefromwood.

“IfIcangetareallygoodjarofhoneythatisnotcrystallizing,IwilldefinitelyentertheJuniorHoneyCompetitionthisyear,”Joshuasaid.“IreallydolovethecompetitionsattheFair.”

Eventhoughtheenthusiasticgardeningchefenjoyscuttingvegetablesandcombiningspices,hestillprefersdeliciousdesserts.Inordertoorganizeallhissweetideas,herecordspotentialrecipesinasecretrecipenotebook.Thenotebookincludesascrumptious-soundingseven-layercake,anentic-ingicingrecipeandadelectabledessertcalledTripleFudgeBananaSwirl.

Withplanstoenterthe2010StateFaircookingcontests,Noahisdevotedtocontinuallyim-provinghisculinaryability.

“Thisyear’sentryistopsecret,”hesaid.“However,Icantellyouthatitwillbeanotherpie.Theyaremyfavorite.”

In2009,sheearnedashowmanshippinattheStateFair,butisstillwait-ingonherfirstribbon.Reganunderstandstheresponsibilityanddedica-tioninvolvedincaringforalivingcreature.

Herparents,WayneandCrystalMitchem,arefocusedontheedu-cationshegainsandonthefunofshowinganimals.

“Themostimportantaspectofshowinglivestockisthatyoungpeoplebecomefamiliarwiththeiragriculturalrootsandunder-standtheoriginsoftheirfood,”WayneMitchemsaid.“Ourfavor-itepartofshowingisthatweareabletowatchourdaughtergrow,physicallyandemotionally,alongsideheranimals.”

Inordertobuildastrongbond,Reganspendstimewithherlambsandcalveseveryday.

“Ienjoyhangingoutwithmyanimals,”Regansaid.“Beforeyoucantakealamborcalfintothearena,youhavetohaveabond.”

Inordertokeepheranimalshealthyandpreparethemforcom-petitions,Reganmustfeedthemdailyandgroomthembeforeshows.Becauseshespendssomuchtimewithherfour-leggedcompanions,Reganconsidersthemherfriends.

Theinterestinshowinglive-stockcomesnaturallyintheMitchemfamily.Regan’smom,Crys-tal,beganshowingpigsandsteersattheageof9,whileReganshowedherfirstlambatage6.

“Ashermother,Ifeltaresponsibilitytoexposehertotheprocessofraisingafarmanimal,”Crys-talMitchemsaid.“Wewantedhertounderstandthehardworkanddedicationrequired,butmostofall,wewantedhertofeeltheprideandrewardofsuccess.”

AlthoughReganenjoysshowingcalves,shepreferslambsbe-causetheyaresmaller.Thisyear,she

willshowoneofherlambsintheN.C.StateFairJuniorLivestockcompetition.

“ThelivestockshowsattheFairareasocialevent,”Crys-talMitchemsaid.“Therearemanychildrenwhosharethesameinterests.Theolderchildrenactasrolemodelsandteachhertipsandtricks

aboutshowing.”

NeitherRegannorherparentsgetnervousbeforetheshows.

“Reganisalaidbacktypeofkidandshetakeseverythinginstride,”WayneMitchemsaid.“Althoughweallgetveryexcited,weprobablywon’tgetnervousunlessReganbecomescompetitivewhenshegetsolder.Fornow,wejustwanthertohavefunwithoutanyoutsidepressure.”
