A NOTE FROM THE LAUNCH DIRECTORSWelcome to the second annual LAUNCH Music Conference and Festival!

LAUNCH Music Conference and Festival brings a new level of excitement to Downtown Lancaster in the form of more than 175 musical acts of all different genres, from all over the country (and beyond), performing throughout the city over the course of three evenings.

During the day, instructional panels, workshops and seminars will be held to help guide developing (and established) artists as they navigate their way through the myriad aspects of the music industry, advise endeavoring industry professionals as they struggle to get their foot in the door and enable established industry professionals to network and increase their contacts!

If you’re reading this in advance of LAUNCH and haven’t yet registered to attend, registration is the only way to take full advantage of everything LAUNCH has to offer!

Registrants receive an “all access” badge that grants them FREE entry into any of the showcases taking place in town (see pages 7 for a map of venues and pages 8-9 for a schedule of events). Non-badge holders can still attend these shows, but they must pay a cover charge. Anyone interested in seeing music the weekend of LAUNCH will quickly realize that the cost of registration is well worth it!

Additionally, registrants have access to the panels and panelists (please see page 6 and 10 for more information), our trade show of national and regional vendors, a two CD compilation featuring 40 of the artists performing at LAUNCH, a LAUNCH 2010 T-shirt, and an attendee bag fi lled with freebies from national companies, area business and more, AND a Conference Attendee Appreciation party at the Lancaster Convention Center’s Freedom Hall brought to you by Heineken and Black Lodge Publicity with complementary food and drink provided by Heineken and Metro Express Pizza!

If you’re interested in checking out some new music but don’t require access to all of the advantages that Conference registration brings, you can purchase a Music Festival wristband that grants you access to any of the music performance showcases without having to pay the respective cover charges.

Festival wristbands are available in 3 varieties - a FRIDAY ONLY wristband, a SATURDAY ONLY wristband and a WEEKEND PASS wristband.

You can register to attend or purchase wristbands at our website: (www.launchmusiccconference.com) or at the Lancaster County Convention Center the weekend of LAUNCH.

Please check out the diversity of the music that is represented at LAUNCH and, most importantly, PLEASE ENJOY YOURSELF!

-Jeremy Weiss and Rick Gadd, Conference Directors

LAUNCH would like to give a huge thank you to our many volunteers!!!

LAUNCH PANELS AND DISCUSSIONS

In 2010, LAUNCH continues to put a major emphasis on education and information for musicians and people already working in or interested in working in the music industry!

A great group of industry professionals will be appearing at LAUNCH to share their knowledge on various topics with LAUNCH music conference attendees!

Topics to be discussed cover everything from booking to career opportunities in the industry to the proper way to brand your band. And back for a second year is our popular “Can You Handle The Truth?” panel - you submit your music where it will be played and critiqued with blunt honesty by the panelists!

For more information on the topics of discussion and exact times, see the ‘Panel Descriptions’ on page 10

Friday and Saturday 11am-3:45pm

LAUNCH WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS

When the panels close up shop, its time for artists to get up close and explore certain topics in a smaller, more inviting setting.

The LAUNCH seminars are a perfect place to gather more knowledge and ammunition necessary to make your music career a success - from instruction by a world recognized vocal coach to an inside look at the best tool available for bands to book their own tours to a face-to-face meeting with talent buyers from up and down the east coast!

For more information on the topics of discussion and exact times, see the ‘Workshop Descriptions’ on page 10

2010 LAUNCH MUSIC CONFERENCE GUIDE AND SCHEDULE 13

To say that dredg is a diffi cult band to defi ne is an understatement.

From their intentional decapitolization of their name, to the gorgeous but obtuse visuals that adorn their albums (designed by the band themselves), to their sometimes brooding/sometimes bombastic songwriting, they exist as something of an anomaly in the music industry - a band with a fervent fanbase, impressive record sales and a sound that can’t even remotely be described as “pop.”

Singer and guitarist Gavin Hayes took a few moments out of his busy schedule to share his thoughts on his band’s recent album, their departure from a major label, and what developing bands should know about the state of the music industry today.

You recently released your new album The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion four years after your last album (2005’s Catch Without Arms). Why the long wait between albums? Did you accomplish everything you wanted to artistically with Pariah…?

The wait was due to almost two years of touring on “Catch” and after that, our meticulous approach to writing and recording. We wanted this record to be exactly how we envisioned it and that is how long it took.

Between the release of Catch Without Arms and the release of Pariah… the band parted ways with Interscope and released the new album on its own. I’m sure you’ve been asked to discuss that situation a hundred times, but I think one thing of great interest to many bands who attend conferences like LAUNCH are the advantages and disadvantages of Major Labels vs Indies. Do you have any opinions on the subject you’d like to share?

Obviously, to be independent and running your own business grants you all the freedoms you desire, but it also creates many hurdles that you must confront on your own. There are defi nitely pros and cons to being an independent artist, but I can’t think of a better time in the business to be one.

There seems to have been a recent trend of some major label bands parting ways with their label and sort of retaking the reigns and releasing music themselves with great success. Do you see dredg as part of that pattern, or was the decision to release Pariah… the way you did a result of being the best route to go at the time? I suppose the short question is – was this the way you wanted to release the album or was it the way that simply made the most sense?

I don’t think we really had a choice this time around. We knew we wanted to release this record and we did so in the best way possible.

We are partnering with ILG out of New York. Basically, they help with minor promotion and take care of all of the distribution, which are 2 things that would be diffi cult to manage while on the road.

I think it is a healthy business model for where we are at in our career.

Obviously the industry has changed a lot over the years. From your perspective, how are things different now than they were when dredg first signed with Interscope?

It is drastically different now. We are in a time of transition. There is not a right or wrong way to promote or sell records at the moment which, to me, is very exciting.

There is an idea out there that will forever change the business and will be the future model for many years. It just hasn’t been found yet.

The best part about all of these changes and uncertainties is that I feel like the business is leaving the hands of the labels/corps and returning to the artists.

Time will tell though...

dredg is a difficult band to define – is it important to you to not create music that can easily be put in a box?

It is important, but it is not our main goal. It is just how these four people sound when we create music. I consider us to be a “void” rock band which is great, but it has also proven to be diffi cult on some levels. Being part of a scene is very benefi cial is many ways and we never really have been. It is a blessing and a curse.

You are clearly not the type of band who goes out of their way to write Top 40 Pop songs, so I’m not sure how much these things matter to you, but how does it feel that Pariah… without major label support charted higher on the Billboard 200 than it’s major label predecessor?

It feels good, but that is how it should be. The last thing we want to do is feel like we are regressing.

The individual members all have well documented musical and artistic side endeavors – from movie scores to painting – how important is it to you to be able to express yourselves creatively outside of dredg?

It has always been important for us to remain busy and create outside of the band, because I think, in turn, it helps the band as well. The more infl uence and experience we get from creating outside of dredg the better it is when we get into a room and write.

Do you have any advice for upcoming artists and what they should try to get/should expect to get out of music conferences such as LAUNCH?

I guess it would be to talk to as many people as possible, read about the business, and absorb as many opinions as possible to form your own.

Any last words?

Keep moving onward....
