WHEN WEWORK TOGETHER,
AMAZINGTHINGSCAN HAPPEN
One evening two weeks ago, Kathy Ten Broeke, and Matthew Ayers from Hennepin CountysHeading Home Hennepin Project, and Com-
missioner Gail Dorfman went down to the CurrieAvenue Homeless Shelters to check out the
numbers of people without shelter. They found
the Salvation Army Shelter and Catholic Charitiesshelter stuffed to capacity and many people left
out in the cold. They also found that many of thepeople using the shelters were disabled. So Ms.Ten Broeke and Ms. Dorfman talked with Rev.
Jim Gertmenian, and Rev. Tim Hart-Anderson,
members of the Downtown Congregations toEnd Homelessness (DCEH) to ask if the faith
communities, together with the downtown
business community could raise $350,000 tohire 10 case managers to help shelter guests find
permanent housing and receive ongoing support. The faith communities who are part of the DCEHagreed wholeheartedly to support this project
with a goal of raising $70,000. The DowntownBusiness Community set a goal of raising
$280,000In two weeks time, the faith communities havebegun to raise monies to reach the $70,000 goal.
Over half of the money has been pledged! TheDowntown Businesses are well on their way to
reaching their goal of $280,000. The PR firmPadilla Spear Beardsley has agreed to provide
pro bono services for a media blitz, starting the
week of Christmas. The plan is to have all thefunds committed so that the program can beginby the first of February.
The Family Housing Fund will serve as thefinancial agent for the program. All donations
will be 100% tax deductible. If you want tomake a direct donation to help homeless people
find permanent housing, send a check to theFamily Housing Fund Partners Fund, 801 Nicol-

BREAKTHE SILENCE
BELIEVE OUT LOUD!
WORKSHOP SATURDAY, JAN. 16BY C. KRISTIAN CLAUSERHAUMC MEMBER
As many of you know, I was privileged to be
part of the Hennepin Church staff for several
years. Six years into my tenure, I publicly
announced my gender transition from female to
male. I wasnt quite sure what the congregations
response would be, but I was overjoyed to
receive an outpouring of support.A reaction that I didnt expect was that many
folks I had known for ages suddenly came out
to me for the first time! Elderly parents tearfully
shared their love for their lesbian daughter. A
young woman laughed as she recounted her gay
brothers penchant for practical jokes. A cousin,
co-worker, grandson, friend, sister, nephew, neighbor, mother I heard story after story of a
loved one or even the story teller themselves -
who was gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
I was delighted to now know these people
more fully, and be able to count them as allies.
They had been there the whole time I just
didnt know it! Perhaps telling my story gave
others the permission or the courage to finally
share their own experiences.
Similar situations play out in congregations
across the country, and its not just those in the
pews who are keeping silent about their support
for GLBT people. A recent study by Christian
Community, entitled Silent and Undecided
Friends, found that 68% of United Methodist
clergy personally felt homosexual persons
should be fully welcomed and accepted without
qualification, yet only 7% publicly expressed
their welcome and affirmation!
As a Reconciling United Methodist, Im work-
ing to increase those percentages. I know first-hand how lonely and isolating it is to think that
theres no place for GLBT people in the family of
God. It changed my life when I encountered
others who were willing to speak openly about
Christs inclusive love. Thats why I know in my
heart that merely believing GLBT persons
should be welcome in our churches is NOTenough. We all need to BELIEVE OUT LOUD!
Thats precisely why the Reconciling Ministries
Network (rmnetwork.org) has developed the
Believe Out Loud campaign. Based on the
understanding that people dont change until
they hear other peoples stories and get to know
one another BOL is designed to equip andempower people to build intentional relation-
ships both among Reconciling allies, and across
ideological and theological divides.
Participants in BOL workshops nationwide are
learning how to be BOLD living as Believe
Out Loud Disciples. Minnesotas workshop, led
by RMN trainer Katie Krumbach, will take placeat Hennepin Church from 9:00 AM 5:00 PM
on Saturday, January 16. The training and class
materials are offered at no charge, and lunch
will be provided. Free childcare is available with
advance registration. A freewill offering will be
collected.
I invite you to be BOLD and join me inbecoming a Believe Out Loud Disciple. To learn
more or to register for the workshop, please

IN BETHLEHEM INN: A LIVELY
HOLIDAY SHOWBY OLIVIA DOROW HOVLAND
For the past month, the Church ofYouth has been a bustling place.
Beginning in November, youth ingrades 7 through 12 rehearsed lines,
built sets, planned advertising andpublicity, and organized costumes
They worked hard to put togethera holiday event complete with ashow, musical entertainment, and hot
food. The play, titled In BethlehemInn, was performed on Saturday,December 5th and Sunday, December 6th to an
audience full of children and adults alike.
In Bethlehem Inn was a witty retelling of
a classic Christmas story, focused on threebusiness partners who owned the inn where
Mary and Joseph sought refuge on the night
when Jesus was born. The innkeepers and their
servants kept up a constant stream of verbal
banter while the guests, or the audience, were
served their dinner. Troublesome interruptions,
including a little barnyard rumble with somelocal shepherds, led up to a beautiful baby boy
being born in the inns stable.
The play was originally written by John Carter
but was adapted and directed by Eric Powell
Holm, a member of Hennepin Church. Besides
the actors, there were also many youth who
did work behind the scenes to keep the night
running smoothly. Numerous adult volunteers
also pitched in and helped the youth toconstruct brick walls out of paper, create glittery
star ornaments, and design programs, tickets,
and fliers.
Money made from the performances will be
put towards the youth mission trips happening
this summer. The junior high youth will be
traveling to Madison, WI and the senior highyouth will be going to Los Angeles, CA.
With the event being as big a success as it
was, it might just be made an annual tradition to
help ring in the Christmas season with a little
theatrical cheer.

INCLUDE PROGRAM COMMITTEES,
CONGREGATIONBY BOBBIE KELLER
To enhance communication among program
committees and give congregational membersopportunity to keep in touch with each otherand church issues, the Administrative Council
adopted a new meeting schedule for 2010 onDec. 3.
Instead of the current system, in which the full

will convene every three months to considerprogram for the next quarter and promoteinteraction between committees. Each quarter
will also include a potluck event, when congre-gational members can gather to enjoy hospitalityand discuss a designated topic or important
church news. The full Ad Council will meet to discuss
administrative committee issues the third monthof each quarter.
The first congregational potluck will take theplace of the annual church conference at 9:30a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Social Hall. Otherpotlucks will follow in April, July and October.
Program council meetings will begin inFebruary and continue in May, August and
November.Ad Council members will kick off the new
year with their annual retreat at Koinonia Jan.15-16.
In other business, Arvida Steen, area chair for
Ministries of Church Community, outlined themany ways the real heroines and heroes in thisarea are reaching out to other congregational
members, especially those experiencing tough
times.
Ad Council members also heard that:
for the first time in a decade, Food Service
is self-supporting. The operating budget has
subsidized the service in recent years.
Hennepin Church will be a sponsor of the
Speaking of Faith program on MinnesotaPublic Radio beginning in December.
with 70 percent of the 2010 budget goal

AN INVITATIONTO BECOMEAVOICE
FOR INJUSTICE NOW!BY ANN CARLSON, DIGNITY CENTER
As Christians, we know that Jesus spoke out
about injustice in his society. He ate with people
on the margins of society, who were consideredunclean. He challenged those in power toshow compassion for those without power. We
are called to do the same today! Dignity Centeradvocates work with people on the margins of
society: people who have lost their housingbecause they no longer have a job that paysthe rent; people who will lose their medical
care because of the Governor's un-allotments forGeneral Assistance Medical Care; or people
who cannot find affordable housing because itis in such limited supply.
Hennepin Church is part of a coalition of 13
downtown congregations who have committedthemselves to work together to end homelessness
by developing strategies to identify issues relatedto poverty and homelessness. Each church hasbeen asked to develop a group of people who
commit themselves to advocate for changesneeded in our society to end homelessness andpoverty.
I am asking you to join with members of oursister congregations to commit to doingadvocacy with our state and national legislators
on issues related to poverty and homelessness. The Downtown Congregations to End Home-
lessness (DCEH) Advocacy Committee reviews
issues and sends out action alerts twice a monthby email to people from all the congregations
who have committed to do advocacy on behalfof our impoverished brothers and sisters. In eachcongregation, the Interfaith Action Team mem-
bers set up a Take 5 table twice a month after
the worship service in the gathering space.Members of the congregation participating inadvocacy sign postcards or make phone calls totheir state or national legislators on important
poverty issues. If you are willing to do advocacy on specific
issues related to poverty and homelessness
along with others from our sister congregations, please email [email protected] permittingme to forward your email address to the DCEHAdvocacy Committee to receive action alerts.
Together we will work to change the conditionsthat lead to injustice today.
