If you are staying for more than 8 days during the ski season, a season pass is more cost effective. 2010 Resort Entry and all resorts season permit applications are available online at www.fallscreek.com.au/resortentry

Playing it Safeu Place your children in Snowsports School (Ski School). Not only

will they meet other children, but they will learn in the safest and most enjoyable environment.

u Young children should be in the care of an adult rather than an older child.

u Put a name tag (including name, accommodation, mobile contact number) in your child’s pocket.

u Explain to your children that if you become separated they should ask the nearest member of staff (ie. lift attendant) to call Ski Patrol - you do the same and Ski Patrol Base will match you up.

u Skiing or boarding with a child in a backpack/front pack is not permitted and lift access will be denied.

u Review the trail map with older children so they are familiar with the runs and lifts.

u Ensure your children stop regularly. Watch for signs of tiredness and don’t push them beyond their limitations.

u Allow time. Getting children dressed and moving them around the village requires patience and time.

u Children under 135cms will not be permitted to ride chairlifts without a responsible adult with a valid adult lift ticket.

At Falls Creek the mountains, clean air and pristine alpine views are our greatest asset. The effects of climate change could dramatically impact the ski industry and the alpine region’s unique biodiversity.

There are many things that you can do while you are here, and also at home, to minimise the amount of natural resources we use, to help keep our winters as cool as possible.

Keep Winter CoolFIGHT GLOBAL WARMING WWW.KEEPWINTERCOOL.COM.AU

1 Reduce energy used by transport vehicles Share a ride or take a bus to the snow and to work

2 Turn off lights and appliances when at home or on holiday It is best to turn them off at the power point

3 Purchase high star-rating, energy efficient appliances Use compact fluorescent light globes around the house

4 Insulate your house or lodge Turn down the thermostat and use draught stoppers

5 Cut hot water consumption by washing clothes in cold water Install water-efficient shower heads or a solar water heater

6 Eco-buy Purchase greenhouse friendly products from local sources

7 Support renewable energy sources Switch to Green Power with your electricity supplier

8 Plant a tree Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

9 Reduce, reuse and recycle Reducing waste means less methane gas from landfill

10 Lead change at your workplace or business Spread the word - cool global warming and keep winter cool

Regardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that THERE ARE INHERENT RISKS in all snow recreational activities which common sense and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, vehicles and snowmaking equipment.

Alpine Responsibility CodeKnow and observe the Code below - It's your responsibility.

1 Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air.

2 Take lessons from qualified professional instructors, to learn & progress.3 As you proceed downhill or overtake another person, you must

avoid the people below and beside you.4 Do not stop where you obstruct a trail or run, or are not visible

from above.5 When entering a trail or run, or starting downhill, look uphill and

give way to others.6 When riding chairlifts always use the restraining devices. Always

use suitable restraints to avoid runaway equipment. Ensure your equipment is in good condition.

7 Observe all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs and out of closed areas.

8 Before using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

9 Do not ski, snowboard, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol.

10 If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol, call (03) 5758 3502.

Insiders’ GuideSummer 2010

Page 16: 2010 Falls Creek Insiders Guide

One of the best kept secrets is summer at Falls Creek. Situated 1585 meters above sea level on a stunning alpine plateau, Falls Creek boasts the highest significant body of water in Australia. Here you will find outstanding fly-fishing, kayaking and boating opportunities in Rocky Valley and at Pretty Valley Lake.

Back in the 1950s during the development of the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme, 30kms of roads were built around Falls Creek to maintain the aqueducts. These roads are now wide paths that weave through the Alpine National Park from the Falls Creek resort. They offer excellent cross country bike riding, walking and high altitude training runs for all levels. The views from these trails are spectacular and also provide an opportunity to visit the historic Wallace and Cope Huts. Falls Creek is fast becoming a high altitude training centre for elite athletes from around the world.

There are a number of marked trails for hikers of all levels and abilities; from peaceful exploration around the village to steep and rocky adventure walks.

Discover the perfect picnic area and camping spot or drive, hike or ride out to Mount McKay, the highest drivable mountain in Victoria at 1842 metres. You can rock climb up Strawberry Saddle Crag or book a sunset tour and enjoy a gourmet picnic and sparkling wine whilst soaking up the uninterrupted 360 degree views across the breathtaking Bogong High Plains. Pretty Valley Lake is only a short distance further and provides the perfect environment to relax amongst the Snowgums and alpine wildflowers.

With the sealing of the Bogong High Plains Road in 2009, Falls Creek offers unparalleled views and a smooth drive through the Alpine National Park. So whether you take the family on a relaxing drive, cruise through on your motorbike or cycle with friends, this road provides you with a unique and spectacular Australian alpine experience.

If you are after some rest and relaxation, like to get active or are looking for a great family holiday then we have plenty of reasons for you to visit Falls Creek. A number of bars, restaurants and accommodation options are available to suit all styles, tastes and budgets.

Welcome
