Each essay should be a minimum of 500 words in length for a passing grade (C), but you are encouraged to extend your writing beyond the minimum (700+) for the highest grade. 10 points each. A. There are two parts to Essay A. Write on two of the paintings that we have studied in Unit One. The paintings are available under External Links. Answer the following questions for your each of your selected paintings: Describe the painting in your own words. Was your selected painting "interesting" to you? Why or why not? How did the painting stimulate your imagination? What do you think that the artist of the painting was trying to accomplish in the work, i.e., was the artist expressing an idea, value or feeling? What “meaning” was intended by the artist and how was this meaning communicated by elements of art? [Refer to selected elements of art in your writing.] B. There are three parts to Essay B on History. Explain the meaning of the following two quotations. Consider what each author meant by the statement and how the statement might be supported. How might one argue against the view of history? 1. “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” (Santayana). 2. “Happy is the nation without a history.” (Cesare Beccaria) 3. Write a brief summary of your response to the forum question: Why did the Soviet Union collapse in 1991? Identify a primary source and a secondary source which would help you to respond to this question and explain how each source would be helpful. Prepare your essays as Word or Rich Text Format files. Be sure to put HUM 2010, your full name and your student number on your essays.
