WelcomeThank you for your interest in our summer camp. We are celebrating our tenth year conducting our adventure camps. We are looking forward to the fun in the sun and beach this year with the kids!

Brief HistoryCarolina Coastal Adventures summer camp has been in operation since 2000. Located in Carolina Beach, we take every opportunity to explore the wonders of our beautiful coastline. Our activities such as kayaking, surfing, crabbing/seining, hiking and exploring have emerged as favorites for both boys and girls from year to year. These activities make up the mainstay of our programs. Our outdoor, hands-on approach allows each individual the chance to experience and connect with marine-based activities and the environment. Our camp memories will live on for years and years.

StaffWe thoroughly enjoy sharing the outdoor adventure experience with children. Our staff is comprised of outdoor enthusiasts with interests including: kayaking, surfing, crabbing/seining, boating, scuba diving, cycling/mountain biking, running, swimming, astronomy, horseback-riding, skiing, ecology and marine biology. Our staff is certified in kayak instruction, CPR/First Aid and Lifeguarding with experience teaching children on water activities.

Summer Camp 2010Our camp will be a fun filled week that will focus on learning throughdiscovery. Many of the activities for custom fitted for the weather, environmental conditions, and the tides. Campers can be sure that every day will be an adventure! A typical day at camp might include kayaking in the morning, when all the wildlife is out feeding, then crabbing until lunch. In the afternoon, campers might enjoy a surf lesson, or a hike through Carolina Beach State Park to Sugarloaf Dune, for a little exploring and swimming! Later in the week, campers might adventure to Southport on the Ferry, to visit the Oak Island Lighthouse and the Maritime Museum. The week wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, and a few surprises from the staff!

KayakingCarolina Coastal Adventures’ kayaking program is headed by Angela Pagenstecher, who is an American Canoe Association certified IT trainer. She has taught everyone from beginners to instructors. The staff at Kid’s Camp is also certified byAngela, so campers can enjoy learning the basics of kayaking that adhere to the standards of ACA accreditation. Kid’s campers will learn the basic strokes requiredto navigate through our coastal waters, as well as a few fun rescue techniques. Ifconditions are right, campers may be able to kayak to Zeke’s Island, for our famous Zeke’s Island Adventure Day, where we will swim, hike, interact with localwildlife, and use a seine net or dip net to see how many marine organisms we cancollect. Since no two days at the coast are ever the same, you never know what wewill see!

SurfingKid’s Campers always enjoy surfing! The majority of the camp staff have spent years reading and riding waves on Pleasure Island. Campers will learn all the basics for catching waves, getting up on the board, and having a safe surfing adventure. While some campers are surfing, others will swim and play on the beach, or boogie board until their turn comes! Lifeguard Certified camp counselors will be present to make sure everyone stays safe while having fun!

Marine EducationDuring the course of the week, campers will get many opportunities to interact with local wildlife. Some of these activities include crabbing with hand lines, seine netting, scavenger hunts, and hikes through maritime forests and marshes. Campers will havea chance to explore the coquina outcrop to discover anemones, sea stars, and many types of shells. We often encounter dolphins and sea turtles while kayaking, and find deer and raccoon tracks on our hikes. Campers will learn the impact of human development on barrier islands, and grow to appreciate the beautiful coast of our state. Through beach clean-ups, campers will learn the importance of keeping our local beaches clean and enjoy sharing experiences they’ve had with other campers. The week promises to be both fun and educational!
