AOM – August-Joan Swim

July Minutes

The Sand Painters Art Guild met early July 25, 2010, at 4:00 pm CT at Cherry Hills in Valentine, NE. Joan Swim taught watercolor techniques until supper. We enjoyed a young guest, Natalie Lurz. Joan called the meeting to order after supper. The treasure, Eileen Beman, reported the check book balance was $1319.17and $706.41 in the CD. Joan requested that supplies purchased for the ANAC be reimbursed to her and Pricilla Portenier. The group was in favor of that. The Art Big and Small kicked off with its first session Saturday, July 10th at 1:00p.m. One student showed up. It was felt that the lack of lead time led to the lack of participation. Six teachers, Joan Swim, Anita Masterson, Janine Holmes, Robin Pyner, Debby Galloway and Brenda Holfeldt were on hand to instruct art classes. Brenda Holfeldt instructed the only child in fusing material to make a scene on fabric. Everyone had a great time. The next Art Big and Small is to be held August 14 at 9:30 to 12:00 at the Old High School Building. A grant of $2000 will take care of supplies that are needed. Some discussion was held on supply needs. Hedda Matheson and Joan Swim volunteered to teach at the upcoming session. The program age range is 6-18 years of age. If the participants attend 5 times they will receive a tee shirt, 8 times they will receive a bag.

If you have a screw gun please bring it. Please come and help if you can. Donna will judge the show sometime Friday. Entry fees are $4.00 per piece; they must be originals, not done in a workshop. Art must not be older than 2 years. Photography is good. Tags are on the internet and glass in the frames is fine. The next program in September will be Rust Painting by Nancy Blumenstock. Bring a drawing with rust in it. The September Library Show will be Nebraska Earth and Sky, wildflowers. Open to all members. Eileen Beman requested that the art group think about making 90 year old birthday cards. She was having a hard time finding any in the community. A retreat was briefly discussed and no decisions were made. The meeting adjourned and more watercolor was enjoyed. Pat handed out the fired clay projects from last month.

Hey all---get a sketchbook--any sketchbook---and get ready to use it this year. Carry it with you at all times and have some fun drawing supplies to go with. A zip lock bag works really well to hold supplies.

Resumes are due. If you have your resumes done, you can e-mail or hard copy them to Pat at any time. Thanks.

Donna Binfield has received many awards and recognitions for her work, and has shown in regional and national juried competitions. She has studied under many nationally-known artists, and has conducted classes and workshops in various medias throughout Nebraska and Kansas.  Donna is a past president of the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs and a Signature Member of the Chicago Pastel Painters. Her life-like drawings of horses and many years of pencil drawings have led to her keen perception and open expression of the innermost feelings of her subjects. She paints with passion and understanding, and strives to pass these emotions on to the viewer.

“I was born and raised in Nebraska’s rural farming area. As long as I can remember, I’ve been a lover of animals - especially horses. Horses have surrounded me all my life - and spending time with them has kept me in the out-of-doors and in close contact with nature. It is outdoors, surrounded by birds and animals that I feel closest to God - and I strive to express this feeling to the viewer through my art work.”.

Donna's primary media is pastel however she works in most media - oil acrylic, and watercolor.    Binfield will be teaching landscape, composition and how to paint animals in the medium of your choice. Please bring all the supplies needed for your particular medium. Bring some pictures of your favorite animals or landscape for reference.
