Doug BoxellHead Coach

Doug Boxell, the winner of five High School state championships in Texas, begins his second season as the head men’s basketball coach at Ozarks.

Boxell made an immediate impact on the program in year one, bringing in a talented recruiting class to begin his foundation. That talent translated into the Eagles opening conference play 4-0, including a win over the eventual ASC cham-pions. Boxell’s team defeated one NCAA III qualifying tournament team and took another down to the wire during his inaugural campaign. Following the 2009-2010 season, Boxell had the ASC East Division Player of the Year, two All-Conference players and another on the All-Freshman Team. Three of his players were on the ASC All-Academic Team. Prior to Ozarks, Boxell spent 13 years as the head boy’s basketball coach at Ponder High School where he won three state champion-ships, including back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009. 12 of his 13 teams won district titles there. Boxell also served as the school’s athletic director for five years. His extensive Texas coaching experience spans nearly 25 years, including two other stops that resulted in state championships. Prior to Ponder, Boxell spent two seasons at Sudan High School, and led the Hornets to a state title in 1995. His first head coaching stint was at Santo High School, where he spent five years and won the state title in 1990. He also had stops at Lampasas High School, Neches High School and Alpine High School. He owns an impressive 670-175 (.792) career record. “Ozarks is a great university where student-athletes can receive a solid education and develop friendships that will last a lifetime,” said Boxell. “This university will not only pre-pare you for your profession, but also for the game of life.” During his career, 23 of his teams have made the playoffs, with 17 of those winning district championships. He guided 16 of his teams to the regional tournament and seven made state tournament appearances. He was the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Coach of the Year twice and District Coach of the Year 14 times. He was named the Denton Record Chronicle and Fort Worth Star-Telegram Coach of the Year three times. In 1990, he was the head coach of the TABC All-Star game. Boxell received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from University of North Texas in 1980. He has a master’s degree in Physical Education from Sam Houston State University. Boxell and his wife, Jeananne, are the parents of four sons.

Luke HammondAssistant Coach Luke Hammond be-gins his fourth season as the assistant men’s basketball coach. Hammond was instru-mental in developing the junior varsity pro-gram at Ozarks, and compiled a 5-3 record

last season. A native of Yorktown, Va., Ham-mond played at Averett University in Danville, Va., for three years. He was a student assistant at Averett during the 2006-2007 season, help-ing the Cougars earn a spot in the NCAA III tournament for the first time in 17 years. Ham-mond’s summer camp experience includes serving as camp director of more than 25 Prep All-Stars Camp. He initiated “On Point Boot Camp” to develop middle and high school players for the next level. He is a 2007 gradu-ate of Averett University where he majored in Physical Education. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sports coaching from the United States Sports Academy.

Travis Rogers Student Assistant

Travis Rogers begins his first season as a stu-dent assistant coach. Rogers, a native of Coldwater, Kansas, will assist with all aspects of the program. Rogers served as the assistant

girl’s coach at Meade (KS) High School during the 2007-2008 season. He worked summer camps at Meade and Coldwater (KS) High School for five years. As a player, Rogers was named to the SPIAA All-League Team twice during his prep career at Meade. Eagles Prepare For Year Two Under Boxell

There is a new sense of urgency for Head Men’s Basketball Coach Doug Boxell as he enters year two at the collegiate level. It was a roller coaster ride last season for Boxell, who made the transition to the NCAA after a successful high school career. The Eagles upset Mary Hardin-Baylor, the eventual conference champion, early in the season, and started the conference slate 4-0. In the second half of the year, the Eagles dropped a heartbreaker to nationally-ranked Texas-Dallas on a last second tip-in. Ozarks also produced the American South-west Conference East Division Player of the Year. But the Eagles finished the season losing ten of their final 11 games and ended the year 8-16 overall. “It seemed like a lot of games came down to the last two minutes and we weren’t able to finish,” said Boxell. “I hope this team can grow and finish those type of games. If you are good enough to win those type of games, you are good enough to make the conference tournament. There is no reason we can’t make that happen here. There are a lot of intangibles that go into that. It takes chemistry and developing a family-like atmosphere. I feel like if we will do those things you don’t see on paper, we can have that special team.” Boxell must replace the division Player of the Year and two-year starter Colby Woolverton, who is expected to receive a medical redshirt. The Eagles do return three starters and Boxell brought in another large recruiting class, including three transfers that will help fill the void. “Our new players give us a little bit of renewed hope,” said Boxell. “We are head-ed in the right direction, we just need to keep going. I think our three transfers will help us. On paper we are young. We did a better job getting the type of student-athlete that fits Ozarks. We probably had a lot more questions going into last year versus this year. I think we are deeper this year. We have to do a better job sharing the ball and playing as a team. I think having a knowledge how we want to play will offset some of the individual talent we lost.” One concern for the veteran coach is the lack of size on the team. The Eagles boast just two players 6-foot-6 or taller. Junior center Nate Miller is listed at 6-foot-7 while sophomore Dylan Ballard is listed at 6-foot-6. Miller and Ballard will be joined on the inside by Marcus Bobb, a 6-foot-4 29-year-old transfer. Bobb, who played for Box-ell at Ponder (Texas) High School, has the ability to hit shots from the perimeter. “Marcus is a nice player and adds some stability to the team,” said Boxell. “He understands how to play the game. Dylan is a good scorer and Nate is back. One of our problems is the fact that we don’t have enough strength to keep others from get-ting to the basket. We need to be tough enough to block out and get charges. I think dealing with the lack of size you better be blocking out. We will have to technique rebound. We have to do it.” Senior guard Andre Williams is expected to fill the role as team leader. Williams is the top scorer back after averaging 11.0 points per game. Williams drilled 32-of-80 from the three-point line while dishing out a team-best 2.7 assists per game. He is also the top returning rebounder with a 4.2 average. Jerard McGinty averaged 9.5 points and hit a team-high 42 percent from the three-point line. McGinty, who made 33 three’s last season, has the ability to take opponents down low and score. The 6-foot-4 junior averaged 3.3 rebounds per game. “Andre will be a four-year starter,” said Boxell. “He is a knowledgeable player. I

get a lot of feedback from him. He is a good shooter and good scorer. He under-stands the game well. We will lean on him to make our younger players more effec-tive. A player like Andre can make the game easier for the other kids. Jerard is a good three-point shooter. He can help us inside and outside.” The point guard position may have the most depth of any position on the team. Sophomore Mark Perez returns after making the ASC East Division All-Freshman Team. Perez started in 16 games and can shoot the three. Improved junior DaMario Lyons and sophomore Isaiah Boxell are expected to contribute, and transfer Jermery Victor has the coaching staff believing he can make a difference, too. It will be important for that group to take care of the ball. The Eagles had the worst turnover margin in the league. “At point guard, it may be a situation where we play more than one person,” said Boxell. “We just need to see who will develop and help us out the most. It is not a matter of one being better than the other, but rather which player will make our team better. They have to take care of the ball. If you don’t turn the ball over and give the other team easy baskets and play good fundamental defense, then we can control whatever we do.” Sophomores Clayton Crouch and Shawn Curtis saw action as starters during the season. Crouch averaged 4.8 points from his guard position. Curtis, a 6-foot-4 forward, averaged 3.8 points and nearly two rebounds per game. “Our sophomore class has a better understanding of what we want to do,” said Boxell. “We have four kids from the same high school that can help us out, too.” Boxell believes a lack of size and improved depth won’t necessarily change the Eagles’ offensive philosophy. “Our style of play will be similar to last year,” said Boxell. “I think we can push the ball a little more. We still won’t be a fast break type team. One of the bright spots to this year’s team is the addition of freshman Bryton Flint. He can get to the basket and shoot the three. He is a nice player. He can make us better.” Boxell’s mantra in the past has been team defense and team toughness, areas that will continue to be emphasized this season. The Eagles finished near the bottom of the league in offensive rebounding and steals. “We have to be the best block out team, the best charge team and the best defensive team in the league,” said Boxell. “We have to play good team defense. Last year, it probably wasn’t a lack of effort, but a lack of concentration. We have to do a better job guarding others. We need to stay in front of the ball defensively. We need to be on the same page mentally. That is probably the biggest key. We need to stay focused to play the game. If we can concentrate and not just react we will be a step ahead defensively. Our players need to see what will happen before it hap-pens.” The Eagles finished last in the division with a 6-13 conference mark. A stronger sec-ond half of the season will be needed in order to make a push for the playoffs. “We need to win more games in the second half of the season,” said Boxell. “Our goal is to make the conference tournament and win the tournament. Everybody is close in this conference. It can come down to who plays harder. That is one of the keys to winning in this conference. If you don’t play hard and don’t play smart, your chances are not as good as the other team. We have to make our expectations higher. Sometimes it is hard to raise the expectations when you have not been to the tournament. But this is a different season and different team.”

Mitchem Named Player of the Year Sophomore forward Blake Mitchem was voted the American Southwest Conference Men’s Basketball East Division Player of the Year for the 2009-2010 season. Mitchem became the first Ozarks’ player to receive the honor since Michael Bollman. Bollman, a forward, earned the award in 2002-2003 for the Eagles. Mitchem also became the first Ozarks’ player to lead a conference in scoring (21.0) and rebounding (10.6) in the modern-era, and is only the second player in ASC history to lead the conference in each of those categories. Concordia’s K.B. DeBord did it during the 1999-2000 season. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound native of Fort Smith, Ark., also earned a spot on the five-man All-ASC Team and was an East Division First Team selection. He started in all 24 games and ranked among the ASC leaders in field goal percentage (4th-56.8%), blocked shots (3rd-1.8) and minutes played (1st-36.2). He shot 73.8 percent from the free throw line and led the team in steals (1.2). He posted a league-best 13 double-dou-bles, and reached double figures in scoring in all but two games. He had 20 or more points 17 times and 30 or more points three times. He scored a career-high 34 points against Hendrix College and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds against Rust College. He led Ozarks in scoring in 19 games and led in rebound-ing 23 games. Perhaps his best game of the season came against Louisiana College February 6 when he scored 27 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked six shots and hit the game-winner as the buzzer sounded. He was named ASC Player of the Week and earned a spot on the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week twice during the season. He was eighteenth in NCAA III in rebounding and twenty-seventh in scor-ing.

He shot over 30 percent from behind the arc and over 70 percent from the free throw line. Against Texas Lutheran, he scored 12 points and dished out five assists.

Academic AwardsThree men’s basketball players were named to the 2009-2010 American Southwest Confer-ence All-Academic Team. To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have lettered in the 2009-2010 season, be in at least their second academic year at their institution, and carry a career grade-point average of 3.00 or better. The team in-cluded Justin James, a sophomore Account-ing/Management major from Coal Hill, Ark., Ben Martin, a sophomore Chemistry major from Hot Springs, Ark., and Colby Woolverton, a sophomore Physical Education major from Sherwood, Ark.

Upset SpecialAndre Williams hit an 8-foot jumper with less than one second remaining to send the Eagles to a thrilling 70-68 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor November 30 in Clarksville.Mary Hardin-Baylor went on to win the American Southwest Conference champi-onship. Williams’ heroics moved the Eagles to 2-0 at that point. Ozarks would go 4-0 in conference play before suffering a loss. Against Mary Hardin-Baylor, the Crusaders hit a three-pointer with 11 ticks left on the clock to tie the game at 68-68. Not to be outdone, Williams took the ball the entire length of the court and dribbled to the right baseline and promptly hit a fade-away jumper from eight feet out to give Ozarks the win. The Crusad-ers’ desperation heave with .6 second left on the clock was off, giving the Eagles their sec-ond straight come-from-behind win. Williams finished with 13 points.

Williams: Sportsmanship Athlete of the YearJunior guard Andre Williams excels in more than one way on the court. He was voted the American Southwest Conference East Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year by the head coaches in the league. Williams, a team captain, received the award for his positive attitude, leadership abilities and the sportsmanship he displayed on the court. Williams also earned All-East Division Honor-able Mention. He was named to the ASC All-Freshman Team for the 2007-2008 season. He has averaged 9.4 points in his career and has 111 three-pointers during his time as a three-year starter.

American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 15th cham-pionship season of competition with the 2010-2011 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercol-legiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC en-compasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississip-pi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III champi-onships. The roster of American Southwest Confer-ence members in 2009-2010 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne Uni-versity, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry Univer-sity, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basket-ball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Rich-ardson, Texas.
