The Format: Supporting Professional Growth

The programs are offered in a convenient, accelerated format at Emmanuel’s main campusin Boston or online. On-campus courses meet just one evening per week in seven-week ses-sions. Online courses are also delivered in seven-week sessions, but in an asynchronous for-mat. Generally, students begin studies by first completing the six research administrationcourses, offered in a cohort model with two starts per year: fall (September) and spring(January). This coursework satisfies the academic requirements needed to earn a GraduateCertificate in Research Administration. For those in the Master of Science in Managementwith specialization in Research Administration, students take the five general managementcourses after completing the research administration cohort courses. Students should applyto the program from which they intend to graduate.

The Location: In the Heart of the Longwood Medicaland Academic Area (LMA)

Emmanuel’s central location, in the heart of the LMA and adjacent to some of themost respected health care institutions and academic centers in the world, allowsthe College to form strategic partnerships with leaders in the research field. Ourexpert instructors call upon their professional research experiences at world-renowned institutions such as Harvard University, Dana-Farber Cancer Instituteand Dartmouth College. Emmanuel College is the recipient of the University Con-tinuing Education Association’s (UCEA) 2010 Community of Practice Award forOutreach and Engagement for Employer and Association Partnerships in ResearchAdministration.

The Curriculum: A Cutting-Edge Approach

The knowledge and skills gained in the graduate-level research administration cur-riculum can be immediately applied on the job. Emmanuel College convened con-tent-area experts to examine key competencies in the field. These key competenciescomplement the noncredit options of the professional associations such as the Soci-ety of Research Administrators (SRA) and the National Council of University Re-search Administrators (NCURA). Using a case study approach and interactivetechnology platforms, our instructors cover critical elements of sponsored projectsadministration, including communication, negotiation, contract management, fi-nance and ethics. Students further their understanding through interaction with agrowing network of current and future leaders in the sponsored research field. Stu-dents who pursue a Master of Science in Management with specialization in Re-search Administration benefit from both content-specific and generalizedmanagement and leadership coursework.

Become the dynamic leader the field of researchadministration demands.

Those working in the world of research administration impact some

of the largest sponsored global health and social initiatives. Em-

ployed by a broad range of organizations, including universities,

hospitals, nonprofit and government agencies, they facilitate re-

search that can make a difference. As the field continues to ad-

vance, the need for experienced administrators is as important as

the research being conducted.

Through a rigorous curriculum created by sponsored research ex-

perts from our neighboring Longwood Medical and Academic Area

(LMA) institutions and beyond, Emmanuel College responds to the

specialized needs of those currently working or interested

in research administration by providing opportunities to earn an ac-

ademic credential and expand professional networks.

Through these award-winning and innovative part-time programs,

students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become

highly productive professionals, critical thinkers, and contributors

to the community – the next generation of leaders in research ad-

ministration.
