Frances Payne Bolton(1885-1977)

Frances Payne Bolton was the first woman to be elected from Ohio to Congress and the first congresswoman to represent the United States in the United Nations General Assembly. In 1943, she created a widespread awareness of the critical importance of the field of nursing by sponsoring the Bolton Act, which introduced the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps. Bolton believed that the role of the nurse was “not only caring for the sick but also teaching health” and that nurses bring “light, easement, intelligence, and understanding where there [is] darkness.”

These principles continue to shape the philosophy of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and enable it to maintain its status as one of the nation’s premier nursing schools.

FPB gives you a choice of a number of different MSN majors, plus subspecialties. From nurse midwifery to adult-gerontology nurse practitioner, from flight nursing to nurse anesthesia, FPB has you covered.

If you are working as a nurse right now, FPB offers courses in nontraditional formats including intensive, web-based, and weekend courses so that you can remain in your current job. Several of our programs can even be completed in a semi-distance format with limited trips to campus, making our MSN program feasible for anyone.

Many majors in convenient course formats

FPB has a strong legacy and many current activities in international health care and education. Students at FPB participate in international programs as well. Each fall, a group of MSN students, led by faculty preceptors, head to Central America to participate in the Guatemala Medical Mission Tour. Working in conjunction with the nonprofit organization Refuge International, students staff a clinic in the tiny village of San Raymundo, Guatemala, which serves most of the surrounding rural region. Not only do they provide essential services to the local people who have little or no access to health care, FPB

students have the opportunity to use their hands-on autonomous clinical skills and increase their cultural competence.

Recently, FPB signed an agreement with Japan’s Aichi Medical University to help establish Asia’s very first flight nursing program for acute care nurse practitioners. As an affiliate of FPB’s own National Flight Nurse Academy, the Japanese program will take advantage of new laws that give nurses greater authority and capacity to respond to critical emergencies and disasters throughout the mountainous nation.

In addition, most MSN majors require a minimum of 500 clinical hours; certain programs require more. Most FPB students complete their MSN coursework between 18 and 24 months, though the nurse anesthesia program requires 28 months of study.

Research knowledge forms an integral part of graduate study in nursing. The general curriculum pattern includes requirements in each of the following areas:

• Professional Development

• Scientific Inquiry

• Nursing Practice (for Nurse Practitioner majors)

MSN MajorsAs one of the few MSN programs in the country to offer such a dynamic range of specialties and subspecialties, FPB also allows students to choose from a number of blended majors and joint degree programs to give them an extra edge in the job market.

Almost all MSN students must take 10 core courses in research and professional development, plus more for those who have chosen nurse practitioner majors.

The majors require an average of 40 credit hours, usually completed in three or four semesters (including summer). Most majors also require at least 500 clinical hours; the anesthesia, midwifery, cardiovascular, and flight nursing programs require more.

All majors prepare students to take the appropriate certification exam upon graduation.

Nurse AnesthesiaNurse anesthesia focuses on preoperative evaluation, intra-operative management, and postoperative evaluation of patient anesthesia care. Nurse anesthetists are primarily responsible for direct patient care and are prepared as expert clinicians.

Clinical courses provide students with opportunities to give direct patient care, participate in staff education programs, and identify clinical topics for research. Students work one on one with a clinical preceptor with expertise in nurse anesthesia. The student will take part in administering general and regional anesthesia in persons of all ages. The management of emergency operations, obstetrics, pediatrics, and neurosurgery are an integral part of the clinical experience.
