Welcome to the Gregg County 4-H Program! I am glad that you have chosen to be a part of the largest non-formal youth education organization in Texas! Almost 1 million Texas youth and over 6 million youth nationwide participate in 4-H to become self-motivated, productive, and contributing citizens. 4-H is designed to be a family organization, so 4-H parents are encouraged to be involved in the 4-H experience. The help that 4-H parents can contribute ranges from serving as a project leader to providing transportation to activities or even supplying refreshments for meetings or special events. 4-H parents are also needed to supervise 4-H activities. Gregg County has an outstanding group of dedicated adult volunteer leaders as well as a superb group of motivated 4-H members. Please read through your Gregg County 4-H Handbook to answer questions you may have about 4-H. This handbook is designed as a reference tool for you throughout the 4-H year. Please refer to the calendar located in the back of the handbook as you plan for participation in 4-H events and contests. You can fill in additional events to your calendar as they arise. To keep you updated regarding all 4-H events and activities, we mail a 4-H newsletter to all enrolled 4-H members and 4-H volunteer leaders on a monthly basis. Best wishes for a fulfilling year in 4-H! I will look forward to seeing you at events throughout the year! Sincerely, Jill Parker Gregg County Extension Agent Family & Consumer Sciences

What is 4-H?

4-H is the youth development program of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, a part of the Texas A&M University System. 4-H partners include State, Federal, and County Governments. 4-H is an exciting youth program that helps young people learn how to do new and interesting things through learn-by-doing projects. The four “H’s” are explained in the organization’s pledge, which every 4-H member should know:

“I Pledge- - My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty, My Hands to larger service, and My Health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.”

The 4-H club emblem is a four leaf clover with the letter “H” on each leaf.

The four “H’s” stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. Leaves of the clover are green and the “H’s” are white.

The White is for purity. Green is nature’s most common color, and is symbolic of youth, life, and growth.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN 4-H? 4-H programs are open to all young people from third grade through age 18. A special “Clover Kids” program is available for children in kindergarten through the second grade, ages 5 through 8. Regardless of whether you live in the city or in the country, you can be a part of the 4-H program. There are many projects and activities to choose from.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN 4-H? The 4-H slogan is “Learn by Doing”. 4-H members complete learning experiences called 4-H projects. A project is an area of interest that the 4-H member wants to learn more about. The project consists of at least six hours of learning time and provides in-depth learning experiences for the member. A 4-H member may participate in one or more projects each year. Here is a partial list of 4-H projects to choose from: Aquatic Sciences Food & Nutrition Poultry Beef Cattle Forestry Public Speaking Citizenship Health Rabbits Clothing & Textiles Horse Recreation Consumer Skills Horticulture Sheep & Goats Dog Care & Training Housing & Home Shooting Sports Entomology Environment Swine Fashion Revue Meat Science Veterinary Science Field & Stream Photography Wildlife You can also take part in 4-H by attending 4-H club meetings. The 4-H club meetings are conducted by 4-H’ers who are elected into officer positions. 4-H adult volunteer leaders help 4-H members to plan and run the meetings. Each club has an adult volunteer leader who is the 4-H club manager. The 4-H club manager oversees the meetings and activities of the 4-H club. In 4-H there are many activities to participate in. In addition to participating in club meetings and projects, you may also be involved in making presentations, skits, leadership, and community service activities. There are also opportunities to participate in 4-H camps, retreats, exhibition shows, and contests.

GREGG COUNTY 4-H ADULT LEADERS ASSOCIATION All 4-H parents and leaders are encouraged to be a part of the Adult Leaders Association! The Association is comprised of volunteer 4-H leaders who meet and work together to support the 4-H youth of Gregg County. The Association works together with the county 4-H council to plan and coordinate countywide 4-H activities. The Adult Leaders Association works to financially support the 4-H youth through fund raising projects. The Association is also useful as a meeting place for leaders to exchange ideas. The Association has 4 meetings each year. The meetings are held in January, March, May and September.

GREGG COUNTY 4-H COUNCIL Members of the County 4-H Council plan and coordinate 4-H activities in the county. The County 4-H council also promotes 4-H activities. The council is comprised of 4-H members from each of the various 4-H clubs in the county. Clubs are encouraged to have at least two council delegates who will attend the County 4-H Council meetings. Typically, a 4-H member is elected into the position of council delegate and represents his or her club at the County 4-H council meetings. In most cases, the president of the 4-H club also serves as a delegate to the County 4-H Council. In addition to the club council delegates and presidents, membership to the council is open to all 4-H youth who are at least 11 years of age by August 31st of the current 4-H year. The County 4-H Council serves as a communication channel. Council delegates represent their club and relay information and ideas from their club to the council. The council delegates also relay information from the council to their club to keep the members up to date on countywide activities and events. Meetings of the Gregg County 4-H Council are held in January, March, May and September.

4-H CONTESTS There are many 4-H contests which give members a chance to display their skills. Winners of most county 4-H contests advance to district and state contests. 4-H contest information is mailed to 4-H members in the monthly 4-H newsletter Following is a brief description of some of the annual contests. For dates of these contests, refer to the calendar included in this handbook. Deadlines to register for these contests will be listed in your 4-H newsletter.

4-H ROUNDUP The 4-H Roundup Contest provides 4-H members a chance to display their public speaking skills. 4-H members use the knowledge gained from 4-H projects and activities to prepare a presentation. Presentations are a very valuable educational tool in the 4-H program. Through presentations, 4-H’ers learn how to organize their thoughts and present their ideas. Below is a description of educational presentations. Educational presentations are planned presentations by one to five 4-H members that teach information related to a project or activity. Simply, they are ways of “showing” and “telling” others how to make or do something and sharing useful information. Through a method demonstration, you “show” others how to do something. You actually make something. There is a finished product. Through an illustrated talk, you talk about a particular subject; you are “telling” with the use of illustrations. Through the “speech” method you simply educate with words alone. Visual aids such as slides, posters, charts, pictures, etc. can be used in method demonstrations and illustrated talks. There is a 12 minute time limit for educational presentations. 4-H members may present method demonstrations and illustrated talks as an individual or as a team of up to five 4-H’ers.

9

Another 4-H Roundup category is PUBLIC SPEAKING. In the public speaking category an individual 4-H member presents a 5 to 7 minute speech. Props and visual aids may not be used.

SHARE-THE-FUN SKITS allow 4-H members to demonstrate their acting and showmanship talents. There are six divisions of Share-the-Fun:

4-H FOOD SHOW

The 4-H Food Show provides an opportunity for 4-H members to exhibit their skills in the food and nutrition project. There are four categories in which to compete: Main Dish, Fruits and Vegetables, Breads and Cereals, and Nutritious Snacks.

4-H FOOD CHALLENGE

Inspired by the popular television series Iron Chef, this fun contest and activity is for 4-H food & nutrition enthusiasts! For this contest, 4-H members compete on teams of 3-5 members. The teams use a group of ingredients, resource materials and some basic kitchen supplies to create their own dish, calculate cost per serving, evaluate nutritional value, and cover food safety practices in a brief presentation to judges.

4-H FASHION SHOW

The Fashion Show provides opportunities for 4-H members to exhibit their skills in modeling and presentation of themselves and their garments, good grooming and poise, fashion interpretation and understanding of style. 4-H members may choose clothing construction or comparison shopping. The four senior categories in each division include casual, dressy, formal, and specialty. Junior categories are announced before the Fashion show each year.

CONSUMER DECISION MAKING In the Consumer Decision Making Contest, the 4-H member compares a class of consumer items to make the best choice. Items such as DVD players, digital cameras, and blue jeans are judged to determine the best value for the money. The consumer items are different each year. Through this contest, 4-H’ers learn to practice wise consumer skills.

RECORD BOOKS 4-H Record books are a tool in learning record keeping skills. In the 4-H Record book, 4-H members record information about participation and accomplishments in all 4-H projects and activities. There are many categories in which to enter a 4-H record book; from clothing to consumer; from forestry to foods; from poultry to public speaking. Remember to take pictures during the year. Pictures are a part of the 4-H record book. Record book covers are available at the Extension office.
