President Danny Kaplan and

Superintendent John Schultz

Leadership HEF said goodbye in September to Executive Director Susan Bass Roberts. We wish her well in her new position. Sally Levens graciously stepped in to provide stable leadership and expertly steered us through the Royal Bash.

In February, we were pleased to welcome Judith Grytdahl as our new Executive Director. Judith’s experience and enthusiasm will help guide Hopkins Education Foundation for continued success.

President Danny Kaplan led us through an exciting year of change and growth. The size of the Board of Directors was increased to twenty-four. The outreach of the Foundation expanded with new events and the addition of a volunteer chair position.

2010-11 Highlights

New Events HEF hosted a successful, community-building event at the Gold Nugget restaurant in September. Hopkins students walked in the Raspberry Parade on a hot July day to raise awareness of Foundation grants.

PEACEFUL PLAYGROUNDS Alice Smith - Kristin Lutz Based on a well-researched program implemented in schools nationwide, the Peaceful Playground helps motivate children to play cooperatively, learn to handle conflict, and increase physical activity.

ELECTRONIC BOOKS Teachers can engage students by giving them quick access to popular new books. E-books help disguise the difficulty level of books to reduce the embarrassment some students feel who are reading below grade level. Students needing additional support in reading can access increased font size, a built-in dictionary and use text-to-speech technology.

Kindle the Love of Reading Alice Smith - Melissa Moro-Koss

Nooks: Any Book, Any Kid, Any Time Glen Lake - Patty O’Reilly

Nooks “4” Books North Junior High - Pat Schmidt

“REFLECTIONS” LITERARY MAGAZINE Hopkins High School - Robert FuhrThe “Reflections” magazine showcasing student work is back! Works include short stories, poems, essays, photography, and artwork. The grant funded start up cost; sales will fund future editions of the magazine.

Buzzers are used for academic teams to practice for competitions and are available to high school classroom teachers for games to help students review for tests. ON THE BALL FOR ACTIVE LEARNING Eisenhower - Kathy BoutenAll fourth grade students at Eisenhower can experience the benefits of active learning with stability balls. These balls help students focus on learning while also providing exercise.

LEARNING SOCIAL SKILLS THROUGH VIDEO ROLE PLAY Glen Lake - Mary SlobigWith FLIP cameras, students with disabilities can view themselves in role play and real-life interactions. These tapes are used for discussions on socially appropriate interactions

2010-11 Highlights

People from 11 states bid on our auction items

1st annual online auction a success! Auction Co-chairs Julie Sinykin and Jennifer St. Clair added a new online auction so everyone could participate. Our community donated over 200 items from sporting events to restaurant gift certificates. Friends and relatives from out-side the district joined in the bidding fun and supported HEF.

The sold-out Royal Bash was fun and the culmination of a lot of hard work. Thank you to all the volunteers and donors who made it a success. Guests enjoyed a silent auction, live auction, the music of Dale Enquist and The Sons, and dancing after dinner. A special thank you to Chair Linda Sedgwick for her wonderful leadership!

Alum Kristin Sedgwick, Richard Sedgwick and Chair Linda Sedgwick

A record breaking special appeal: $36,000

raised at the Bash for iPad pilots in

every school!
