THIS IS YOUR LIFE

Every day every teenager probably hears a parent, teacher or newspaper telling him he is too frivolous. too wrapped up in having fun.

We at Go-Set believe that today's young people, deep down, think more deeply and seriously about the prob-lem.. about them than many people. Perhaps more deeply than parents do.

Why cle. we think this? Because we are convinced of two things. Firstly that the majority of older people only buy

the daily papers to read the sport, social colu mns and cornice. The n are few ...Jules who live up to their preach-ngs about taking life seriously. If they DO, they usually think flaking life seriously" means buying a car that suits their social status, or investing their money in the right bank.

Teenagers, on the other hand, have taken • corn. pletely new approach. We believe that today's young people spend • great deal of their time enjoying them-selves In • clean, healthy way ... and the rest of their time attempting to work out so me rules or sensible guide-lines by which they an lin In this world of troubles and change..

There ii a great gap between the way our parents lived as young people, and the life we •ne trying to lin today. Nowadays, we have to cope with • world where new inventions, new rules, new ideas and new problems arise every day. We were born into this typo of world and have never known anything else but the high-speed, high-pressure way of life we find around us. It has been. and still is, our task to try and sort out the truth from the lies In what we hear ... and to sort out the useful from the stupid in what we were TAUGHT about the way we ought to set and live.

So much has changed in people's ideas over the last SO years that it is likely that more than half the khans we have had drummed Into us about morals, wars, manners and pe I conduct, Is outdated and foolish.

All this leads us to the real point. What DO young people today think about? What do

YOU believe about love, for instance . . or about the importance of money, or the need for happiness?

We at Go-Set feel that YOU, the young people of Australia, our ma nes, have a lot to say that needs to be said.

We feel that a paper like Go-Set is the place where we should say it. So that it is read not only by other teenagers, but by their parents and all the other adults and important people who read the papers.

SOI What we are going to do Is this. To see IF you ARE willing and capable of telling the

world what you believe, we want you ALL to write in and tell us WHAT YOU THINK ARE THE BIGGEST. OR MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEMS FACING THE W ORLD TODAY.

For this week, we do NOT want you to give us your ideas on these problems ... w. just want to get • list — a sort of vote if you like, on what the most urgent prob-lems ere, IN THE OPINI ON OF THE THINKING YOUNG MEN AND W OMEN TODAY.

Write to "This Is Our Life" e/o. Go-Set, 2 Charnwood - —Cro n StriCilda-Tplease-note new address)- end-give-us

your name and age too please. We will print as many as we can next week and the

week after, and THEN we will start out with • PROBLEM A WEEK Including the opinion of a fa mous pop-star EACH WEEK1 This way, you can get YOUR problem dis-cussed, and we will ask for your answers and Ideas on each question discussed.

Don't let us clown — we are taking • ga mble on the belief that today's te ns DO think and worry about how they should live and act.

And finally, don't be shy! There are no holds barred, ALL the most important questions about life are worth talking about, BECAUSE they are Import mic

F one more story pops into print about the fabul-ous love story of Mrs. and Mr.

Bono then I shall go gaily gathering goitered grapes now til never.

But the crazy couple have • crazy story; It is the story of Mr. and Mrs. Sonny and Cher.

Once upon so me time ago-go. In Detroit (whe m fro m cometh all manner and make of cars), was born a Sonny to Mr. and Mrs. Bono. Sonny shifted to Los Angeles and took to work like • duck to treacle. Son-ny's vocation was (and is) song-writ ing and singing and im mediately, if not sooner, he gained a reputa-tion as one of the leading song-writers in the country. So me of his recent hits in-clude' "Keke Joe", "You Bug Me Baby", "Needles and Pins", "Baby Don't Go", "T M Boy Next Door" and "Drea m Baby".

Over the past few years Sonny has developed a close relationship with Phil Spec-tor, THE producer for Atlan-tis records and clai ms that the resulting knowledge ol records and record produc-tion stems directly fro m this friendship — plu' hav-ing worked under hi m both as a musician and as a back-ground singer. He has played and sung for the Ronnettes, the Crystals. Darlene Love, Bob!, B. S 011. the Boue Jean and The Righteous Brothers.

Soon alter meeting pro-ducers Charles Green and Brian Slone, Sonny phoned the m ire doe mickile of don night to play a song called -Baby Don't Go-. which ha hail just written They liked it recorded et, helped it he-r it.• a success and now

doug panther reports on FRANK M AIN-DAVE PANTHER MICK FLYNN -LINDSAY SHAH

the wild

colonials The Wild Colonials' manager

Jeff Joseph shocked GO-SET stiff early this week by telling the m that the Colonials had all spent tin:* in jail. I've heard that • per-son's character can be reed in their feces so together we ru m-maged through our huge stack of photographs. and found a few of The Wild Colonials. "Mm m m mml Have a gleeful eyeful DI that mad dog look In Lyndsay Shah's peep-ers! And Mike Main ... probably clubbed his mother to death with his first Christ mas present. Dave Panther seems about as healthy as Jack the Ripper too". By now it was easy to see the first signs of lunatic-leprosy seeping to the sur-face of Mick Flinn. physiognomy. But 1401 They're none of 'em

hardened crIrns at all —a: • group they were found guilty of having perfor med at a charity show at the Bendigo Boob before Christ-mas and were scheduled to appear at Pentridge for the sa me type of show, but Ryan and Walker escaped and loused she show up for everybody. Even though he occasionally

dubs them -jailbirds" Jeff has their undivided allegiance. They first met while Jeff was pro mo-tions manager at Pinnochio's. Tho Colonials auditioned as House Band under the na me "Press men" and changed to Colonials shortly after. With the added incentive and

encourage ment the Colonials now write a lot of their own nu mbers, about • dozen altogether. But only two have been released so far. -Down Town Blues- was their own composition and the backing side "Roses are Red". is a nun: ber last recorded by "You Know Who -. The Wild Coriolis's' long deser-

ved break arrived the sa me time as the Tom Jones Show and every-body raved about their perfor-mance. Quite apart from their musical

talents they have the enviable reputation of being one of the best groomed groups on the Mel-bourne pop scene. In fact Her man antb.the_Her mits -noticed she di:- --tinctive cutti ng and styling of their suits and made delighted noises about having some cut for them-selves in similar fashion for use in tours back home. After the Ton: Jones Show they

did their second show with Billy Thorpe and added so an impres-sive list of Sydney TV perfor m• ances, so that they have now been on every big TV show Sydney hes to offer.

Apparently Nat Kipner fro m "Spin" label has booked the Wild Colonials and stablentate Ronnie Bu ms as two of • series of Mel-bourne acts to appear on Sydney s "Saturday Date". Returning fro m Sydney they

met Adelaide pro moter Gary Killington who proposed an Adelaide tour for the Colonials, but at the time their schedule was book ed out for most week nights as well as weekends on end. Luckily one of their clients al-lowed them to cancel a weekend booking so the Adelaide trip was hurriedly arranged. After a warning about the

strength of loyalty to local bane: the Colonials departed just on a fortnight ago. The first Ids (at the Oxford Club) was the most im-portant. They were accepted al-most im mediately and at the end of their stay their rating, by at-tendances, was al most as high as the Twilight.. A fan club of two or three had

one hundred and twenty me mbers by the time they left, and Gary Killington has invited them back for Easter. In the cloudier future is a trip to N.Z. — negotiations underway at the moment with the manager of tie N.Z. Raiders. Briefly about the band .. JI The Wild Colonials have no

leader. Lyndsay Shah on lead guitar (poetic emetic. wot7) is the newest member. A very happy <happy since his most pronounced dislike seems to be warts. Dru m-mer is Dave Panther, my musical na mesake, who dislikes snobs and ignorance and think• the Beatles sitteth on the right hand .... Bass man is Mick Flinn who

says his biggest break was, wait for it . . three strings in one night. Finally, rhyth m guitarist Frank

Main whose physique indicates that he was built especially to cope with his hobby — pulling things to bits. Basically they are • wild beat

group who enjoy reviving old rock nu mbers and re-arranging others to suit their own musical preference. Their only bother as — far as records go is the consistent poor quality production. They have this gripe in corn-

moo with most other Australian artists. They are too restricted in what they want to record, and ru mour hath it that the equip-ment used by most Australian companies was stolen from the Gould League of Bird Lovers' Sound Studios lust before the outbreak of World War I.

One of the most talked. shout ins techniques. the foul- a-heel drift. is also one of the least underrtood. M uch to the chagrin of

most of the Bargain B ar. ment ranging and their make' believe Ferraris, let me say here and now that most of us never have and never will perform a true one. Before you put your Austin A40 into a beautiful four • oluel drift round Co mo Park corner. tape a good grip no your imagination, because that's where it will all happen. Top-line racing drivers have

developed the an of the drift. as it is the quickest way of going round a fast curve. but it is a technique requiring considerable skill and • suit-able car. Stirling Moss ad-mitted that even he could not drift the average small sedan. A really powerful engine is needed, and a high standard of basic handling. So me of the more powerful sedans can be drifted by really expert deters. but attempts to drift moat fa mily sed an or low aporta earn would al most cer-tainly be disastrous. W hen you push a car hard

through a bend, centrifugal force lends to pun the car sideways towards the outside of the bend. Thu tyres give way to this side pressure, making the car veer slightly off the line on which the wheels are steered. This de-viation is called "Slip Angle" Let it be understood, how-ever. that the tyre tread ad-here* to the road surface and does not skid under this initiai force. The deforms. lion of the lyre, plus the angling of the car leads many driven, into thinking that they are executing a fair dinku m all-the-way tour-wheel delft, but arts. drifts Just don't conic that easy. The real McCoy is when all

four tyres actually slide side-ways scr am Ilse road to an equal degree, and, with the ear st ared straight, the ear mu ms in a straight line. slightly crabwise. _When ex-tra power t s applied to the tar wheels the ear will travel in a crabwise curve, still with the front wheels pointing straight ahead. In eeeee words, the four-wheel drift is controlled not so m uch with the steering wheel ati with the laud pedal.

STARTING A DRIFT The actual point ut which

slip angle changes to skid. UM 1 he tyres lose adhesion is vaned the breakaway point. This should occur ttttt un. tousle on till tote wheels or

preferably a little earlier on the front wheels. One way of starting to drift is to over. conk things so that the front break* army with it. The balance of this operation Is very delicate and the penally rt frequently an out-of-control :all-skid which so m a ny thople mistakenly class as a drift. In such a vehicle It would

be possible to attack a cor-ner reasonably fast with the slip angles permitting a few degrees of drift. Atte mpt the sa me co mer considerably faster and a. overseer char iwteristics make themselves felt, the back will break away first and • genuine drift will be al most impossible to pro-duce. Thus many ears which normally under-steer can be-co me gross ovendeerers un-der racing conditions.

IT TAKES PO WER Basic understeer is desir-

able because, by increasint. the amount of power feeding to the rear wheels, the tail can be slid into line. At this stage the car is being "Steer ed on the Throttle^.

To be able to do thts you need power ... lots of it. It takes a lot of gee-gee t drag four sticky tyres sideways across a road-surface, defying all the rules of centrifugal force to make the ear change direction. Therefore, a o-ir with a top speed of 120 m.p.h. could possibly drift an 80 m.p.h. bend at BO m.p.h.. but a car with a top speed of SO m.p.h. would have near enough power available to hold a delft at this speed. The driver would probably steer into a m omentary state of drift, but or the power con-su med in sliding rapidly de-creases the car's velocity. the drift would be loot, with the clanger of a bad spin follow-ing. The extra reserve of power is needed to ceunteract the thrust of centrifugal force.

George Monkhouse, in his book "Grand Prix Racing." gives a vicar and concise des-cription of the technique: -On approaching the cor

ner the driver mo mentarily checks and steadies the car, choosing a fairly wide angle of entry. Ile then deliberately puts the ear into a four-wheel drift by si multaneously steer. Ing towards the apex of the corner and opening the throt-tle. Tu anyone standing on the inside of the bend the car appears to muter under per. fret control round the corner, although both the ear and la front wheels point .lightly to-wards the inside of the bend.

'In fact the car is :Oldish' out wards on all four wherit away fro m the centre of e ut

eaters, due to centrifero forte: tait the driver uses th. surplus flower at his dispose, to push the car back into il,. corner at the sa me rate as e is trying to slide out.

OVERSTEER AND UNDERSTEER

If the slip angle nt the rea-of the ear is greater than ti-the front, the ear will tend te over-steer. In other words, it r an after entering a cu rt.. you have to unwind the steering slightly to hold your line. as in a V. W., you hate oversteer characteristics. It on the other hand, the slip angle at the front of the car is greater than at the rear. your ear will understeer. In this ease it would be ne at. miry to keep feeding in more and more steering lock to make the ear hold its line on • co mer of constant radius. Cars with a front heavy bias tend to understeer. Important points such as

weight distribution, roll centre. tyre characteristics. etc., all influence the degree of understeer and overstecr. Another factor upsetting cal. relations la is machine w hich In designed to give an accept-able degree of understeer below the breakaway point. but which then develops over. steer characteristics.

"This question of the sur-plus power being used to drive the ear at a given speed around the co mer is of supreme importance. for the obvious reason that if suf-ficient surplus power ta not available the car will slide out faster than it can be pushed hack again by the rear wheels, and a trash la al most inevit-able." Assu ming, therefore, that it

ear heeds ISO bh p, to push it round a 120 m.p.h. bend, It means that to be on the safe si de earthy-r do or 70 bli p. should be readily available if needed. nigh-speed drifting is a .t

very skilled manoutare cal-line for a %fry line meo w of 4 balance and touch, ultra- I a nalthe use of the loud pedal, at spillserond ti ming and rear 1 lions and a very cool head. «-So for goodness sake, don't go nut and practice it in your hark transport on public I roads. Uy all means try it on n

deserted roof rack or 41 ti nt don't risk your ille and other people's by playing boy.rucer on the highway Staring techniques are meant i to be rood on racetracks. Just leave the m there.
