11every year we meet students and alumni and are struck by their stories of inspiration. each person makes a point to share with us how St. Anselm’s

Abbey School has made a difference in his life.

As we prepared our donor lists for 2010 – 2011, we were inspired by the numbers and generosity of our donors. our trustees not only donate countless hours and their many talents to St. Anselm’s Abbey School, they also give generously to the Annual Fund, Gala, and named Scholarship Funds. their leadership gifts alone account for a significant portion of our 2010 – 2011 Annual Fund campaign, sending a strong message of support for the School and its mission. contributions from our current parents represent 11 percent of the total giving to the Annual Fund this year. When we pause to consider that these gifts are given in addition to paying tuition at St. Anselm’s, we can’t help but be inspired by this very real demonstration of faith and gratitude. our faculty and staff also give of themselves each day, working tirelessly and endlessly as teachers, coaches, academic and spiritual advisors, and role models to our young men. they too are inspiring.

past parents, our Form VII Forever members, continue their generous support of St. Anselm’s year after year, long after their sons have graduated. they see the opportunities that the School provided for their sons and are doing their part to ensure that a St. Anselm’s education is available to our current and future students. countless friends, family members, oblates and other community members also take part, some never having had a son attend the School, but all believing in what we do here at St. Anselm’s.

you have truly inspired us. Despite the difficulties of the current economic climate which has impacted us all, including our charitable giving, you have all continued to support St. Anselm’s Abbey School through your gifts to the Annual Fund, Gala, named Scholarship Funds, corporate Giving and memorial and honorary Funds. you have stepped forward and given generously to St. Anselm’s – in some cases increasing your gift because of the current economic climate and its impact on the School. Some of you have resumed giving after having been away from, but not out of contact with, St. Anselm’s. We are all humbled and honored. your generous and faithful support inspires us to continue to further the mission of St. Anselm’s Abbey School – to educate and inspire!

thank you!

St. Anselm’s Abbey School seeks to promote the spiritual, personal and intellectual development of young men with demonstrated academic achievement. our school, serving grades six through twelve, with its roots in the values of the christian gospel and catholic tradition, strives to create a community built on respect for truth, love of learning, regard for human dignity and tolerance. We pursue this goal by leading our students through a challenging and balanced program of study in the arts, sciences and theology that gives them a solid preparation for the demands of college. by living and promoting the benedictine spirit, we strive within our school to create an atmosphere of peace, a sense of service to community and a willingness within our students to work toward a balance in mind, body and spirit.

Saint John: you are that John who baptized God; you were praised by an archangel before you were begotten by your father; you were full of God before you were born of your mother; through baptism, the Lord set aside the old rags of original sin, and clothed you in the garments of innocence, promising incorruptibility in the future.

Saint Anselm’s Prayer to Saint John the Baptist

though you will not receive this Annual Report until September, my part has been compiled near the end of the school’s fiscal year, June 30th. As I begin this letter to you, the church is celebrating the Solemnity of the birth of John the baptist, the forerunner of christ (June 24th). In our Anglo-Saxon spirituality, we find written: “Great is the holiness and the honor of Saint John, whose greatness the

lord Jesus himself gave sign. Great is the honor of holy Saint John’s birth, and all orthodox people ought to rejoice in his arrival and bless him, because scripture so spoke about him that many ought to rejoice at his birth. Saint John goes before all other prophets as a voice in the wilderness, and he excels the virtues of all other patriarchs in apostolic authority, and he overcomes in the honors of his virtue the glory of all other martyrs of God.”

Fr. Stephen Reid’s painting of John the baptist certainly captures the ragged image of “a voice crying in the wilderness.” yes, John is a voice crying out. likewise, the prophets are voices, the apostles are voices, the martyrs are voices, Saint benedict and Saint Anselm are voices. Voices, too, are the psalms, voices are the Gospels. And through all these voices, let the Word come forth: the Word who was in the beginning, the Word who was with God, the Word who was God. And it has always been one of the principles of our monastic school that we are a voice in the wilderness proclaiming the Word of God to all our students through an education that is second to none.

this benedictine monastery and school live out pope benedict XVI’s statement that monasticism has long been “the indispensable bearer not only of cultural continuity but above all of fundamental and religious and moral values.” the holy Father goes on to say that monasticism acts as “ a pre-political and supra-political force,” which brings “ever-welcome and necessary rebirths of culture and civilization.” So as we review the academic year 2010-2011, it is my hope that our readers will be able to hear some the voices of these high ideals that St. Anselm’s seeks to nurture.

the school year began on August 26th with 232 young scholars breaking the summer silence of our hallowed halls. As gifted and academically motivated young men, of all the possible choices available, St. Anselm’s Abbey School is their preferred destination. After nine months of rigorous, yet extraordinary times, the year ended on may 28th with the graduation of our 66th class. these 35 seniors were accepted into 189 colleges and universities and were offered over $4,600,000 in scholarship aid. three of these young men scored a perfect 2,400 on their SAts, and over 60% of this class has been recognized in the different national merit scholar programs. All of these achievements are shouting voices of superb academic success.

our alumni community, under the direction of lawrence hamm, ’68, had a full schedule of well-attended events. the annual career Day was held at the School on September 20th, when 11 alumni shared their knowledge and expertise with our Fifth and Sixth Form students. A very competitive Damian crane, ’55 memorial pool tournament was held on october 27th, this was followed on november 27th by the thanksgiving memorial mass and Alumni-Varsity basketball game. the Alumni Association hosted their Third Annual All-Alumni Reunion Weekend April 29th - may 1st, with 175 attendees at the Saturday night banquet. that evening, patrick Attridge, ’74, was the recipient of the Abbot Alban boultwood, oSb Alumni Award for his untiring service to the Alumni Association as treasurer and longtime coordinator of the Golf outing. that same evening mr. mark Dean was honored by the alumni community, receiving a specially engraved chair for his many years of service to the school.

on June 6th, the 18th Annual Golf Outing was held with 82 golfers at the Glenn Dale country club under cool and sunny skies. After a barbecue awards dinner, the Alumni Association presented a $30,000 check to the School for the Annual Fund, earmarked for scholarships. most of this money was raised through the Alumni phonathon and the proceeds for this year’s golf event. the final alumni event of this fiscal year took place on June 9th, when the New York Regional Alumni Chapter met at the princeton club. James lucier, ’82, and bradford Willett, ’91, made all the arrangements and hosted a group of 20 alumni and guests. mr. William Fennell, ’66, chairman of the board of trustees, and his wife, hillary, were also able to attend this most pleasant gathering.

As president of the School, I would like to take this opportunity to thank mr. Fennell and all the members of the board of trustees for their dedicated service to St. Anselm’s Abbey School. their voices and leadership have been most valuable to the School in these times of economic hardship. next year, the board will increase from 15 to 20 members with both newly elected trustees and some appointed by the Abbey.

our Fall Scholarship Gala took place on the evening of october 23rd under the sway of mrs. Valerie brown, our Director of Development, along with the help of talented school parents. Another voice to be heard is that the Gala netted slightly over $150,000 for current scholarship aid. the School’s guest of honor, cardinal theodore mccarrick, was installed in the St. Anselm’s Hall of Honor for his leadership in education and for his great kindness to St. Anselm’s Abbey School over many years.

I hope you mark your calendars now for our next Gala, which will take place Saturday evening, october 29th, 2011, when we will begin celebrating 70 years of the founding of St. Anselm’s Abbey School.

the School held three separate events for Form VII Forever, our past parent social organization, all orchestrated by mrs. Valerie brown. the first one took place on September 26th with a mass celebrated by Fr. michael, followed by a brunch in the commons. the second event took place on December 11th with a christmas concert and reception. the third occasion took place on march 12th with a reception prior to the priory players Spring production, a parody of scenes from plays by David Ives and neil Simon. you can find a full report on the success of the Abbey and School’s Annual Fund later in this booklet.

on the monastic side of things, I am saddened to tell you that Fr. John Farrelly, OSB, passed away thursday morning, June 2nd, in the presence of the monks (born october 21st, 1927; Joined St. Anselm’s September 13th, 1947; ordained February 5th, 1955; Died June 2nd, 2011). For the last several months, Fr. John had been hanging on to the thread of life—his mind so alert contemplating eternity, his body so very frail knowing that his journey on earth was coming to an end. the life of each one of us is woven, as it were, of many threads: the thread of development, through which our ideas and affections and our human and religious attitudes are gradually formed; the thread of outward success, by which we always find ourselves at the exact point where the whole sum of the forces of creation meet together to work in us the effect of God’s unwavering plan; and the thread of acceptance that no matter how long we search or how far we travel, only God’s will can be done. It is easy enough to understand that God can be grasped in and through every life. but can God also be found in and through every death? certainly in Fr. John’s case, he and those monks around him have witnessed God through his undying faith. We pray that like John, we may never break these threads of life. After such a long and debilitating illness, may Fr. John rest in peace.

on June 16th the monastic chapter of St. Anselm’s Abbey voiced their decision and elected Fr. James Wiseman, OSB as our fifth Abbot. Abbot Richard yeo, oSb, president of the english benedictine congregation, presided at the election and in the name of the holy See accepted and confirmed the election of Abbot James. on behalf of the school community, we congratulate Abbot James and we all rejoice that now we can begin over once again in the spirit of Saint benedict. Abbot James has been a member of this monastic community since 1964 and has taught faithfully in the Abbey School each semester since the fall of 1969.

Fr. Simon mcGurk, oSb, has been the prior Administrator for the past five years; the entire monastic community is indebted to him for his selfless service and dedicated work. he was an inspiration to us all through his quiet prayer life. We all wish him well as he returns to his home abbey in belmont, england. the community held a reception for Fr. Simon on June 24th, the Solemnity of Saint John the baptist, in the monastic cloister. So my report to you begins with and ends with the Feast of John the baptist. through the intercession of John the baptist, we ask God to bless Fr. Simon as we pray: “o God, who spoke the Word into the first darkness before the coming of the light, you sent Saint John the baptist to prepare your people for the coming of the messiah. Grant to your church the gift of a joyful spirit and bless Fr. Simon and all believers in the way of salvation and peace, through Jesus christ our lord. Amen.”

I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of our benefactors, donors, alumni, parents, and friends who have contributed so generously to St. Anselm’s Abbey and St. Anselm’s Abbey School. Without your prayers and financial help, this benedictine miracle at 4501 South Dakota Avenue could not survive. Know that the monks continue to pray for you and your families.

letter from the Headmaster

2010–2011 AnnuAl RepoRt

Headmaster Louis Silvano addresses the Class of 2011 at their Vespers of Graduation on May 28.

Dear Friends:

looking back on the 2010–2011 academic year, I wish to acknowledge the many accomplishments of all our students. In particular, I congratulate the class of 2011 on their successful graduation, and our Form II students on their completion of the middle School program. twenty-two members of the class of 2011 were honored by the national merit Scholarship corporation and the college board, which is more than 60 percent of the 35 students in the class. We are proud of these outstanding young men, who are in the top 5 percent of high-school seniors nationally.

As the School approaches the 70th anniversary of its founding in 1942, it is poised to embark upon a new strategic plan: Building on the Past, Looking to the Future. the board of trustees in collaboration with the headmaster and the president of the School began working on the development of a new strategic plan in the fall of 2010. to oversee the process, the board established a Strategic planning committee.

the Strategic planning committee identified three main areas to be addressed in the plan: Financial Strength, Academic excellence, and benedictine ethos. Sub-committees were formed to develop Five-year Strategic objectives for specific parts of the three areas:

Financial Strength• Financial operations• Development• Admissions and marketing• Facilities and transportation

Academic excellence• curriculum• Faculty and Staff• college placement

benedictine ethos• benedictine ethos• Faculty/staff• Students

A central piece of our mission is to enable our students “to work toward a balance in mind, body and spirit,” and our benedictine ethos speaks to the development of the whole person. As the new strategic plan states, “A benedictine school is a community of learning dedicated to the full human development of its students to enable them to serve God and the human community.”

the following vision statement was developed to provide inspiration and direction for goal setting:

“Building on its Benedictine legacy of academic excellence, St. Anselm’s Abbey School will maintain its place as the premier school for intellectually gifted and academically motivated young men in the Washington metropolitan area.”

We will accomplish this by focusing on the following goals: 1. Reaffirm our mission to offer a challenging and balanced program of study that prepares students not only for college but also to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives; 2. Attract and retain talented, dedicated faculty and administrators;3. maintain a highly selective student admission process;4. provide appropriate facilities and resources that meet the needs of our program and our students.

I deeply appreciate the support of the board of trustees, the faculty, parents, and alumni, as we begin to implement the goals of our new strategic plan. I look forward also to next year, when we will celebrate as a community the 70th anniversary of the founding of St. Anselm’s Abbey School.

message from the AbbotDear Friends of St. Anselm’s,

on behalf of our entire monastic community, I extend my best wishes to you as you read our Annual Report about the many fine things that have taken place here during the past year. Although I am writing this at a very quiet spot in the Smoky mountains while on vacation, by the time you receive the report I will be back in the classroom teaching some of your sons and seeing others of you at meetings of the parents Association and other gatherings.

I also want to thank you most sincerely for the many kinds of support you have given us over the past twelve months. Some of you have volunteered your time and energy to help make our various activities a success, others have offered generous financial support in response to mailings or phone calls from our Development office and Alumni Association, and still others have given us words of encouragement and promises of prayers. none of what we do at the monastery and school could be accomplished without such support, so please be assured that we are deeply grateful as we now look forward to another year of working together for the good of all whom we wish to serve.

Sincerely yours,

Rt. Rev. Dom James A. Wiseman, oSb Abbot

James A. Wiseman, OSB was elected the fifth abbot of St. Anselm’s Abbey on June 16, 2011. Abbot James entered the monastic community at the beginning of Advent in 1964 and has taught in the Abbey School every semester since the fall of 1969. He has been a professor for more than 25 years at the Catholic University of America, where he served for five years as chairman of the department of theology. Abbot James previously served as the Abbey’s second abbot from 1975 to 1983 and as prior of the community from 1990 to 2006.

Page 7: 2010-2011 Annual Report

Dear past and present parents, Faculty and Staff, Alumni and Friends of St. Anselm’s Abbey School:

this past year, the board of trustees undertook an internal assessment of the School, surveying students, faculty, and parents in order to identify existing strengths, the particular concerns of those engaged in the daily functioning of the School, and areas that need improvement. the benedictine imperative always to begin again requires those of us engaged in creating a benedictine school community to keep a critical eye on our performance and always to be thinking of how we might improve it.

our assessment of the School coupled with the reflections and ideas of those charged with administering and teaching at St. Anselm’s led to the development of a Five-year Strategic plan. the board adopted this plan at its last meeting of the year in June. our headmaster, mr. louis Silvano, provides an excellent summary in his letter (enclosed in this Annual Report) of the particular goals of the plan. by adopting such a plan, the board intends to put in place institutional imperatives that will insure that we reflect on our performance each year and take steps to make any changes that will make St. Anselm’s a better place.

the board welcomed mr. terry Jacobs and mr. James lucier, ’82, as new board members this past fall. mr. Jacobs is an attorney and currently the global leader of the ernst & young Insurance tax sector. mr. lucier is the managing Director and co-founder of capital Alpha partners, llc, a strategic research firm specializing in Washington research for Wall Street institutional investors.

At its June meeting, the board bade Fr. Simon mcGurk farewell. Fr. Simon has been prior of the Abbey for the past five years and has been very supportive of the School during that period. the board looks forward to working with Abbot James, the newly-elected superior of the monastic community.

I was privileged to attend this year’s graduation in may and was struck by the quality, decency, and modesty of the graduating seniors. this class – like most of the graduating classes at St. Anselm’s – has compiled an extraordinary record of academic achievements during their years at the School. they have done so, however, in a manner that reflects the particular virtues of a rigorous academic school that is imbued with the values of a benedictine monastic community. the seniors who spoke at graduation conveyed with their words and joy their understanding that what they had been encouraged to do and learn at St. Anselm’s went well beyond the textbook and into the lives they lead inside and outside the School.

our mission at the board is to ensure to the best of our ability that St. Anselm’s Abbey School - the extraordinary creation of the monks of St. Anselm’s – will continue to flourish and provide its many gifts to the students entrusted to its care. Sincerely,

prior Simon, Abbot Aidan, Fr. peter, mr. Silvano, Fr. michael, members of the monastic community, members of the board of trustees, faculty, parents, family, friends, and of course, Gentlemen of the class of 2011:

thank you for inviting me to speak today on this wonderful occasion.

I must admit that like each of the alumni speakers in past years, I am, at first, honored to have been asked (albeit a bit skeptical that they just couldn’t find anyone else available); and second, full of trepidation – the only guidance I was given by Fr. peter was that I had to be on time, speak on whatever topic I thought appropriate (that was dangerous to start with), and speak for at least one hour. trust me, while by the time I conclude you may feel like it has been an hour, I feel lucky to have made it through this first 60 seconds. but I do feel trepidation, nonetheless, because although it is axiomatic of graduation speeches that their contents are seldom remembered, I am at least a bit hopeful that whatever you do remember, that it will be positive. Speaking for an hour will not accomplish that goal.

Graduation is a time to reflect upon accomplishments achieved, awards earned, lessons learned and relationships developed. As I prepared for today, I reviewed a lot of material that probably always has been at my fingertips since I was a First Former in 1980. the themes of Ora et Labora (prayer and work), and Pax in Sapientia (peace in understanding) are omnipresent, as those themes have been throughout your experience at St. Anselm’s, just as they were mine. Graduation is also a time to gather oneself to start over. Just as when you finished fifth grade at the top of the food chain in your little pond, when you entered the Abbey School, most of you were in lowly Form A (your Form didn’t even rate a number). So too now, high and mighty seniors, gentlemen of the class of 2011, in a little more than 90 days – you will again be freshmen, and, hopefully, members of your institution’s class of 2015.

but before we get ahead of ourselves and you start over, let us pause to reflect upon a few dates that have shaped our collective experience that we now share as fellow alumni.

In 1109, St. Anselm of canterbury died leaving a legacy of scholasticism, a tradition that is carried on here and has been for almost 70 years. In 1924, some 800 years later, on a farm not far from here, St. Anselm’s priory was founded; it later moved to the hill upon which it sits today. eighteen years after that, in 1942, the priory School was founded. In 1945, the bones of this facility were

constructed as a “state-of-the-art” gymnasium and theater. A quick aside: 41 years later, when my teammates and I played in here, suffice it to say, it was no longer state of the art; in fact, to replicate those conditions, we have had the air conditioning turned off today. In 1961, St. Anselm’s “priory” became St. Anselm’s “Abbey.” (curious that the name changed not long after Fr. michael’s graduation. coincidence, I ask? you be the judge). In 1968, a short way from here at Walter Reed Army medical center, I was born to parents whom I love dearly; while I am confident that they know this, I would be a better son to tell them. In 1981, those same parents made the most important critical decision to enroll me here, at St. Anselm’s; and while it was not my first choice, it was the right choice, and I thank them for their foresight and sacrifice. twenty-five years ago, in 1986, my classmates and I graduated and began journeys that have taken us around the world. by 1994, most of you were born. (Well, it is likely that all, not just most, of you were actually born at some point, although Fr. peter confided that, based upon your odd behavior at times, he felt one or two of you may have crawled from the primordial ooze that was the duck pond or been a cactus experiment gone awry. but be that as it may, you all eventually found your way here.) In 2003, the “state of the art” gym completed its

Page 10: 2010-2011 Annual Report

St. AnSelm’S Abbey School

transformation into this magnificent space. In 2006, after my good friend brian murphy passed away, I was invited to help another good friend, paul Grenaldo, coach the basketball team here – that team won a championship.

It is in the transformation of this building that I find the foundation of the observations I would like to share with you. In the beautiful commons area, through those doors, where the history of this old building is joined to the “new” gymnasium and coach brian murphy court, every day, as you ate lunch, the visual signs of some of the most important lessons were always present. I am not speaking of the four house banners, or the oversized clock, or Fr. peter’s bell, but rather the four reliefs of the cardinal virtues – prudence, justice, temperance and fortitude. When I was a student, these reliefs were embedded in the exterior of the old gym. even then, they captured my imagination each day as I entered the gym for basketball practice or headed out to the baseball field for one of mr. Dean’s practices. now, as an alumnus, although this facility has innumerable great features, I find the prominent interior display of the virtues my favorite. So when I have occasion to come to campus, it is invariably to this building; and, on those occasions, either to see a basketball game or upstairs to see Fr. peter, I will make sure I take time to pause and reflect on the four reliefs.

I have seldom (alright, never until today) had the opportunity to use the knowledge that the ablative absolute in latin is a noun phrase cast in the ablative case. however, as ms. pelosi can attest, latin was never my strongest subject (except, of course, when I attended summer school at Gonzaga after Second Form). Similarly, while my class was not bestowed with this experience, I doubt that any of you will have the opportunity or need to drop an egg 50 feet onto a concrete sidewalk and not desire it to break on whomever or whatever you dropped it. While we learn all of that and other valuable information in the classes that are expertly taught here, I submit that it is the tools that are developed here that are of paramount importance. the guidance provided by the cardinal virtues is such a tool.

First, Prudence: Saint thomas said that prudence is “correct knowledge about things to be done or, more broadly, the knowledge of things that ought to be done and of things that ought to be avoided. It is the intellectual virtue whereby a human being recognizes in any matter at hand what is good and what is evil.”

next, Justice: the moral virtue that exists in the constant and firm will to give God and neighbor their due. put simply, do unto others as you would have done to you.

third, Fortitude has been described as “a steadiness of will in doing good in spite of difficulties faced in the performance of one’s duty.” Do not dismiss this as merely a physical virtue. While certainly our fellow alumni in the military, police and firefighters exemplify fortitude on a daily basis, every difficult decision – whether it is a corporate executive choosing between maximizing corporate profits at the expense of a potential environmental catastrophe, or a young single pregnant woman choosing to deliver her baby and give that baby up for adoption – involves fortitude. my wife and I were the beneficiaries of the fortitude exemplified by the young woman in that latter example.

Finally, Temperance. temperance provides balance. At its most basic, it reminds us that too much of anything is not good. your mastery of temperance will be put to the test over the next four years. obviously, I am referring to the temptation to spend too much time at the library.

So, if all you learned here was the valuable application of the four cardinal virtues to your daily life, you (and your parents’ tuition) would have received a good return on investment. those virtues and the myriad other characteristics and skills you have developed here – discipline, diligence, perseverance, critical thinking, an ability to write and communicate clearly and concisely – are tools that, if nurtured, will continue to serve you in all your future endeavors – college, medical school, law school (for those of us who could not get into medical school), business, government, military service, vocation, marriage, and parenthood – just to name a few.

one last date of reflection: today, may 28, 2011. While you began your journeys as Abbey boys at different times, today you are graduating together from St. Anselm’s as men – responsible and accountable for your choices. you are smart men. you have graduated from this fine institution, St. Anselm’s Abbey School. you do have the tools to succeed. but beware! you will be challenged – certainly in the next four years, but likely daily thereafter as well. I submit that you are well prepared to deal with any challenge or opportunity with which you may be confronted or presented. I challenge you to use the tools that you have developed here – guided by a moral compass of prudence, justice, temperance and fortitude – to lead you through the straits of choices (some difficult, some even more so) that will shape your life. I leave you with this thought: Don’t forget to spend time to enjoy the journey – but not too much; temperance, of course, militates against that. perhaps in 25 years you’ll be the unlikely alumnus wondering what happened to your worthy classmates that they selected you to address the graduates. If you receive that e-mail or text message or whatever the technology is then – perhaps a brain wave message through the thought chip implanted in your cerebral cortex – please accept the invitation.

So, that brings us back to the beginning, to Ora et labora – it is the mission of this institution to prepare its students’ minds, bodies and spirits to their full strengths through prayer and work (be it academic or manual labor cleaning the duck pond because of some failure to exercise prudence, perhaps). the goal is to achieve a sense of peace in understanding – Pax in Sapientia. only you can know how well this goal is being accomplished.

So in conclusion, I and the 1,300 or so alumni I represent today that have preceded you (especially the class of 1986), congratulate you and your families on this wonderful accomplishment and welcome you to our ranks.

We wish you godspeed as you begin again – Rursus incipiemus nunc et semper, Always we begin again – on your continued journey ahead, wherever it may lead you.

may God bless you and your families, and may he continue to bless this most wonderful institution and all who are fortunate enough to experience it. thank you.

Fr. Simon, Fr. peter, mr. Silvano, members of the monastic community, mr. Fennell, mr. Romano, faculty, family, friends and the class of 2011:

When I considered how to structure this speech, I carefully weighed my options like any good Abbey boy. After several intense minutes of contemplation, I ultimately settled on the five paragraph dinosaur. overly familiar, perhaps, but I found it appropriate considering that these are our last hours in this familiar place. I’ll focus on what made the Abbey special for me, the overall spirit of the school, and the future ahead of us. these are three things I know about St. Anselm’s.

the first thing that I learned about the Abbey was that it was basically hogwarts for me. I joined the class of 2011 in Freshman year, or Form III, so I didn’t fully understand the school or the boys upon entering. I did, however, have a rather firm grasp on the harry potter series. I was an awkward, bespectacled young man with a scar on his forehead in a strange new place being introduced to a headmaster, being inducted into a house with red and gold colors, being surrounded by lots of wise men in robes... the list actually goes on for quite some time, but the metaphor seemed very fitting. there is, indeed, magic in these halls. how else could I have had a two-person Spanish class for two years? how else could Dr. Wood have survived the contraption with which my comrades and I lifted

him in mechanical engineering? And how else could such a small school have recruited the most athletic, intelligent, handsome, modest men of a generation as we have assembled today?

the second thing that I learned about the Abbey was that it was not St. Albans. Despite what friends, neighbors, wrestling announcers, and model un organizers would have you believe, it isn’t any other school. It’s better. St. Anselm’s is a place that doesn’t put on airs and where Abbey boys can be curious and accepted. here, it’s cool to learn, discuss, and philosophize with classmates. here, I discovered the important distinction between goofiness and foolishness. together, the class of ’11 learned that the big hero kids protect the short kids, that buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo, what harappaned to the harappans, how to avoid being do-dare-dedi, and how to do it the good way. our school knows itself well, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. the benedictine spirit of humility permeates the student body, the faculty, and the building itself. being at the Abbey taught me as much about the nature of humility as any religion class did. Students here are much more cooperative than competitive.

the third thing that I know about the Abbey is that it prepared us for college. Any one of us could write an ostensibly knowledgeable essay with no preparation, although I doubt we ever would. We are well-versed in the humanities and the sciences. We are inclined to readily take either

side in a discussion. We are all neat to a fault, as our parent can attest. now we step forward to expand our skills further in college. As theodore Roosevelt said, “A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.” thanks to our benedictine education, we have more moral fiber than that. because of the Abbey, we are prepared to proceed in our lives and make our school, our families, and ourselves proud.

We as a class, and I personally, owe more to the people in this room than we could ever pay back. I want to thank the monks, who served as both a quiet and vocal example of the power of the spiritual life; the teachers here, for truly caring about us and our understanding of their disciplines and for guiding us in a very special way, especially on the Kairos retreats; our coaches, who taught us about leadership, resolve, and determination throughout our athletic endeavors; our parents, for giving us life, love, and one another; our families, for teaching us how to walk, how to steal cookies, and how to refrain from stealing cookies; and our fellow Abbey boys, for leading us in the ways of our school’s culture before us and following in it after us.

to the class of 2011, I love you all, and these past years have been four of the best of my life. thanks for everything!

prior Simon, Fr. peter, mr. Silvano, Fr. michael, members of the monastic community, mr. Fennell, mr. Romano, faculty, family, friends and the class of 2011:

before I go on praising my class, allow me to give you a glimpse into the class of 2011’s middle School years, because before anyone can truly appreciate this day, we have to understand how far we’ve come. let me remind you, we were the first class to have to be reorganized after just two months of seventh-grade classes. this is the same class where a vast majority of the students in mr. Achilles’s seventh-grade history spent more time crushing up chalk and playing on our Game boys than looking at the constitution. Also, this is the same class whose favorite pastime in ms. Dunne’s eighth-grade english was seeing who could yell inappropriate words the loudest or who could effectively throw caterpillars on other students and even occasionally on the back of ms. Dunne herself.

nevertheless, I could not be more proud to consider myself part of this distinguished group of Abbey boys who are graduating today. So, what changed? how did we go from a feared group of 8th graders to a brotherhood of distinguished scholars who I am happy to call a family? In part, the answer lies in the eternal patrons of this school: Saint benedict and Saint Anselm. but more importantly, the answer lies in the teachers and monks who live out the philosophies of these two great men every day.

to show you what I mean let me read something from the Rule of St. Benedict:

chapter 30. With regard to boys and adolescents, therefore, or those who cannot understand the seriousness of the penalty, whenever such as these delinquent let them be subjected to severe fasts or brought to terms by harsh beatings, that they may be cured.

thankfully, the monks did away with the paddle years ago, or many of us would still have plenty of bruises to talk about. but in all seriousness, the spirit of these words written 1,500 years ago still resonates and has application for the Abbey boys of today. our beatings were not physical, but instead given out in ms. pelosi’s tireless latin exercises, Dr. Wood’s perplexing physics exams, mr. Alspaugh’s impossible ethics essays, and even all the way back to Fr. peter’s daily earth science quizzes.

this “intellectual violence” taught us the important lessons of discipline. by the time we were in high school, we saw the seniors’ college acceptances on their lockers and we understood that we would have to overcome the same hurdles if we wanted to be successful. And that’s what we did: endless hours in the library, late nights cramming for tests, and long Sunday afternoons writing papers and lab reports.

In addition to the hard work and high expectations, I credit the way that everyone at St. Anselm’s has treated us for our conversion into serious, caring, and socially conscience young men. It was the extra time that ms. Dunne would spend editing our rough draft english papers, it was the sincere hello that ms. brown would give each morning, it was the months Fr. michael and the whole Kairos team

spent to make sure that the retreat would be special for us, and it was all the teachers willing to spend hours with us in their offices to make sure we understood what was going on in class. For this reason I believe that the teachers really understand and embody the words of our patron, Saint Anselm, when he said:

youth resembles wax perfectly prepared to receive that impress of a seal. If the wax be too soft or too hard, it will take only a partial impression. between these two extremes comes adolescence, whose dispositions are nicely balanced, and whose hearts may be molded to true teaching.

the teachers and monks of St. Anselm’s understand that they must be very careful in what impression their seal will make upon us. In my experience, everyone here has shown us genuine love, through the kindness of a teacher asking how our weekend was, or mr. commins making sure that we didn’t just get a haircut, we got them all cut. more importantly, it is the passion that each teacher has for what they do that has left the greatest impression on us. Just ask Fr. castro about the upcoming peruvian election, or mr. montroll about his new origami apps. It was this kindness and passion for knowledge that helped us change from First Formers concerned about lunchtime trashball to true Abbey boys curious about the fundamental questions in whatever we are studying.

Page 13: 2010-2011 Annual Report

As seniors, we have also attempted to live out the words of Saint Anselm and Saint benedict. In the big brother / little brother program, we have begun to understand how soft the wax of middle Schoolers is and how easily they will take to our impression—so it had better be a good one. We were the ones who spent hours planning Field Day, house Day and spirit week festivities so that the younger students could share in our love for the School. but more importantly, we sacrificed our time so that when the A Formers are seniors, they can look back at the fun they had this year and want to do the same. Finally, when we spent sleepless nights this fall writing our college essays, we weren’t just concerned about getting into the best schools; in the back of our minds we knew that our college acceptances would mean much more. they would be displayed on our lockers and become an inspiration for the classes below us to persevere through those difficult classes and be successful Abbey boys.

thus, the cycle has come completely around. We were once the ones who needed guidance and example in our lives, but now we are the ones guiding and inspiring the classes below us. however, we can’t fall into that trap and think our need for learning and guidance is finished with. We only have to look right up the hill to the monastery to understand how wrong we would be if we were to fall down that hole. If the monks have taught us anything, it is that after 1,500 years, they are still learning, and we must always look towards God to be humbled and understand how much we have left to learn.

this is why St. Anselm’s is such an amazing place—because it taught us humility. In turn, this humility has shown us that knowledge is an overflowing cup. We cannot attain this cup, but it is our job to become life-long learners dedicated to exploring the world. We must first understand the problems of humanity before we can ever hope to solve any of them. that is why I want to thank everyone here today, especially the parents for sending your sons to St. Anselm’s, because this school has instilled in us the virtues that are needed to attain peace in the world. So, class of 2011, it is now up to us to apply what we have learned at the Abbey and take it into the world to make this peace a reality.

Form II Transition ServiceAlumni Speaker Scott Salandy-Defour, ’06

mr. mehigan, Fr. peter, Fr. michael, mr. Silvano and the St. Anselm’s Form II students, I thank you for the opportunity to talk to you all today to reflect on some of the things that made and continue to make St. Anselm’s special and so important to me.

to the Form II—soon to be Form III—students, I remember being in your position, sitting in this very transition ceremony not too long ago. I can remember sitting with some of my classmates, Jack leathers and michael edelin, and wondering aloud whether or not I had made the right choice to stay at St. Anselm’s or whether I should have gone to another school.

I remember thinking to myself, Do I really want to take ms. pelosi’s latin again? once was hard enough. What about this Dr. Wood guy? I’ve heard about him and he seems like he could be a scary teacher and really hard. oh, and I almost forgot the most important question—do I really want to stay at an all-guys school without a sister school for the next, and most important, four years of my life?

I can honestly tell you that staying at St. Anselm’s was one of the best choices that I’ve ever made. As I sat in your seats nine years ago, in 2002, I had no idea that I was sitting with what would become some of my lifelong best friends.

to use an overused cliché, “a diamond is a chunk of coal that is made under pressure.” this accurately sums up what can be expected at St. Anselm’s and why I have such a strong bond with my fellow classmates and more importantly why I’m on the way to where I

want to go in life. high school at St. Anselm’s can be described as intense. I remember scrambling during lunch to get homework done, even going to bed at 12 and waking up at five or six in the morning to complete that paper or reading assignment. the year that really sticks out for most Abbey boys is 10th grade. this is the time I point to where my relationship with my best friends and classmates really flourished. this year had Dr. Wood’s or mr. taylor’s physics, Geometry, humanities, Western civilization, Spanish, Religion, and ms. pelosi’s latin. looking back, I realized that I would never have gotten through this period without the camaraderie I had with my classmates. We worked together, studied together, and most importantly, complained together. It didn’t matter whether you played sports, were in the plays, were into computer programming, were a genius, or any other type of high school student, this year was hard and challenging. this challenging course load is what brought my classmates and me closer together over the years. there were many lunches where instead of doing homework or studying for that latin quiz we had forgotten about from the night before, we were just laughing, enjoying each other’s company. At other times there were 20 of us in the latin, Western civilization, or humanities classroom studying for a quiz with words on it that we were just seeing for the first time, because again, we had somehow all forgotten to study the night before. there were many nights when instead of doing our homework we would be on Aol Instant messenger in a chat room complaining about how hard St. Anselm’s is and how easy we would have it if we went to another school. maybe these venting sessions were the reason why we forgot about so many quizzes. but these experiences, along with Kairos, really solidified us as more than classmates and made us brothers with an unbreakable bond.

After going to college and taking my first couple of steps in the “real world” a couple of things about St. Anselm’s stick out in my mind.

Academically, one thing that sticks out is how well St. Anselm’s prepares you to take on challenges and adapt to adversity. on my first day at the university of maryland, I already had 24 credits, and as a result I was taking sophomore- and junior-level classes. my first year at maryland was rough, and I didn’t do as well as I would have liked. I was having trouble managing my time, I think primarily because I had so much time on my hands, which I’d never had in high school. even with all this free time during my “freshman” year at maryland, I did on average 15 to 30 minutes of homework a night and somehow ended up with a 1.9 GpA. this was a miracle considering that I did almost no homework, rarely went to class, and only studied for tests and, occasionally, quizzes. After thinking hard and realizing that I wanted to be able to have some say in what I did for the rest of my life, I started to think deeply about what I could do to balance the social aspects of college with my drive to succeed. In sports, you’ll often hear people say the harder you work in practice, the easier the game will be. I realized that I had felt like I’d worked so hard in high school, that when I got to the game—college—I thought that I wouldn’t have to do Any work. I felt like I could just show up and get that 4.0, or “win.” Wrong. A 1.9, or a loss, will quickly bring you back to reality. As I thought more about it, I noticed that there were people who were working a lot harder than I was, and their GpAs were only slightly better than mine. I soon realized that what St. Anselm’s taught me is that it’s not really about what you know; it’s about realizing what you don’t. And above all else, St. Anselm’s taught me how to think critically, how to analyze and comprehend what I needed to. It taught me how to go out and learn about what I don’t know, how to learn about what interests me, and for the

Page 15: 2010-2011 Annual Report

15

2010–2011 AnnuAl RepoRt

purposes of college, what I need to know to get an A on a test. St. Anselm’s taught me extremely efficient study habits and how to be able to retain and analyze the information I was absorbing. I quickly realized that if I went to every class and I put in an average of 45 minutes to an hour of work a night, with the study skills I developed at St. Anselm’s, I could finish at maryland with at least my high school GpA and graduate a year early. I accomplished this goal, and I tell anyone that asks me that this was only possible thanks to my St. Anselm’s education. If I wasn’t pushed here academically, I would have no idea what I was capable of, let alone how to accomplish this goal.

preparing this speech, I tried to think about St. Anselm’s using the term key differentiator—what separates St. Anselm’s from other schools in the area? the first differentiator is that St. Anselm’s is one of the few schools in the area where you will have friends in your grade, the grades above you and the grades below you. An example of this happened the other night, when I ran into someone who graduated from St. Anselm’s in 2004 in my neighborhood. After I was done talking to him, I ran into two people who graduated in

2008, and after they were done talking to me they started talking to the 2004 graduate. After I got over how crazy it was for four St. Anselm’s students to be in the same place at the same time, I realized that this is something that will only happen at St. Anselm’s. I contrast this with some of my friends from other schools who often don’t even recognize people that were in their own graduating class. Which brings me to the next important thing about St. Anselm’s, which is that in your time here before you graduate, you will hear every one of your classmates say something thought provoking, share a laugh or joke with every one of your classmates, and have a serious conversation or debate with every member of your class. this is one of the most underrated things about the St. Anselm’s community, and something that will allow you to relate to all different types of people as you get older. At most other schools, people become segmented into typical high school cliques, and while there is some of that at St. Anselm’s, I can say that I was able to interact with and make friends with people who I probably would have never talked to had I gone to another school. talking to all types of people challenged me and made me learn and want to walk a mile in someone’s shoes before rushing to judge them.

The Form II class is pictured prior to their Transition Service with (left to right): Headmaster Mr. Louis Silvano; Head of the Middle School Mr. Thomas Mehigan; alumni speaker Scott Salandy-Defour, ’06; President Fr. Peter Weigand, OSB; and Form Mistress Ms. Janine Dunne.

Page 16: 2010-2011 Annual Report

16

St. AnSelm’S Abbey School

the last differentiator, and the most important thing about St. Anselm’s, is the community. the mix of teachers, monks and coaches that St. Anselm’s has is one that is unmatched. the combination of career teachers, teachers and coaches that have or once had 9-to-5 jobs, and monks has put me on the right path to accomplishing my career goals. these different pieces each play a crucial role in molding a St. Anselm’s student and show us different perspectives and viewpoints that help us make the difficult decisions on what we want to achieve in life. Whether it’s the passion with which mr. Vaile or mr. morse talk about a book or poem; Dr. Wood’s or mr. taylor’s passion on display during the egg drop and at the St. Anselm’s basketball tournament; whether it’s the gallons of red ink ms. cholis or ms. Dunne might have left on your paper to make you a better writer; whether it’s the level of detail and pride ms. Diggle takes in producing each and every St. Anselm’s play; or even Fr. peter yelling at all of the “baddy bad shorty shorts” to stop misbehaving, it becomes clear how much everyone at St. Anselm’s cares. more

importantly, our community shows us the different options and passions that are available to us in life. Some of the smartest people I have come across in my experience, including college, are right here teaching us at St. Anselm’s. to wrap things up, as a thought exercise, just think about how many times you’ve been told to stop running in the hallway, been corrected on an assignment, met with a teacher after class, or had a similar interaction here at St. Anselm’s. now, multiply that by 30 or even 40 (each one representing another classmate); multiply that by the number of days in the school year; and finally multiply that by how many years some of these teachers have been at this school. When you do this kind of reflection and over-analysis, as St. Anselm’s students are prone to do, you realize that each of your teachers cares about you, knows about you, wants you to succeed, and most importantly, treats you as an individual. Why else would they risk their own sanity to try and make sure that we end up on the right track? that is surely something that you will not get elsewhere.

Form II Student Speaker Miles Moore

Fr. peter, mr. Silvano, mr. mehigan, Fr. michael, faculty, family, friends, and last but not least, my Form II peers, I would like to thank you all for coming to our Form II transition Service. this day symbolizes the end of our unique, amazing and unforgettable time in middle School. today, my peers and I are expected to move on from our time in middle School and embrace high school. A part of me wants to hold on and enjoy these times forever; however, a brighter, more mature me tells me it’s time to move on.

on our first day at St. Anselm’s I could tell some of us were nervous—I know I was. coming to St. Anselm’s, I already knew two people in my class, Julian and conrad. I had known both of them since at least first grade. Amazingly, by the end of that first year, our class had become so close that you would have thought we’d all known each other that long. then in First Form, our feeble class of 14 lost one and gained a few more. As the challenging school year went on, the new kids fit in just great, uniting us even closer as a class. by the end of the year, our class, young and rambunctious, had received a bit of a reputation for talking. At the beginning of this year, our Form II year, we were finally on top of the middle School, and with two Forms below us, we decided we ought to grow and mature some. With the new faces that were added to our class this year, our class grew closer and closer every day. this last year of middle School was one of the most important years for me, because it is the year I defined myself. I truly am happy to have spent these years with my classmates, and I look forward to our time to come in high school.

Finally, I would like to thank all the parents here today, because without you there would be no transition Service, no Form II class, none of the bright young men you see here today. I would also like to thank the teachers, because you are the ones who guide us and mold us into the mature and reasonable men we are becoming. Finally, I would like to gratefully thank my peers for being here with me during these years. I truly believe that you have helped me to become the bright young man that I am. Good luck, and have a great summer.
