SACRED HEART CHURCH, LA PLATA
ST. MATTHEW Tax collectors have never been popular people, but in our day at
least they are considered respectable. In the time of Jesus, tax
collectors were social outcasts. They worked for the Romans,
who had conquered and oppressed the Jewish people. Worse,
many tax collectors were dishonest, forcing people to pay more
than they really owed. We do not know what kind of tax collec-tor Matthew was. Jesus chose to call him to be one of the
Twelve, in spite of what people would think. Jesus attended a
party at the home of his new disciple. (The story is told in the
ninth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew). Matthew invited all his
friends, the other outcasts of society—tax collectors and public
sinners. The religious leaders were horrified that a teacher like Jesus would keep such company. When Jesus was questioned
about it, he said, “I did not come to call the virtuous, but sin-
ners.” After the death and resurrection of Jesus, when the Holy
Spirit brought gifts of courage and wisdom to the apostles, Mat-
thew preached the gospel. Some traditions say that he worked in
Judea, the southern part of the Holy Land, for many years. But others say he traveled as far as Germany, Greece, Syria, Persia,
or Ethiopia. Tradition says that he was martyred, but where or
when that happened is no longer known. The gospel that bears
Matthew’s name was written in Greek, perhaps around the year
80. Matthew’s gospel was written for a community of Jewish
and Greek Christians. Many of the stories in this gospel remind
us that all people are welcome to follow Christ. An example is
the story of the Magi who were led by a star to visit the infant
Jesus. The Magi were not Jews, and yet they came to honor this
Jewish child, Jesus. The story of the Magi is found only in the
Gospel of Matthew.

WALK WITH FRANCIS IS RETURNING! As we approach the
one year anniversary of the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis, Catholic
Charities invites you to join in the Walk With Francis pledge (either for
the first time or again!). Plan to celebrate the one year anniversary of
Pope Francis’ visit with a recommitment to prayer, service, and acting
to create a more just and Christ-like world. The process is simple.
Pledge cards are in the pews asking you to commit to a particular effort
on behalf of your own spiritual growth. For instance, you could commit
to PRAY. We certainly need prayers now as we watch the racial tension
throughout our country continue to affect our cities, including the Wash-
ington area. You could also pray for God’s blessing on the upcoming
election. We certainly need God’s guidance as we choose our next
President and leaders for the next four years! Once you have completed
your pledge card, please place it in one of the special baskets at any
entrance of the church and help yourself to a Walk With Francis wrist-
band as a sign that you truly intend to keep this pledge and will wear the
band until your pledge is completed. All pledges will be tallied and
given to the Cardinal who will personally take them in the Papal Fait to
the Vatican Nunciature to be delivered directly to Pope Francis.
OUR SACRED HEART FAMILY MISSION will be taking place
on September 26 thru 29, 7:00—8:15 each evening. This Mission, led
by Fr. William Gaffney, CSsR, Redemptorist Missionary, and Gloria
Anson, President, Redemptorist Lay Missionary, will focus on inviting
Jesus to our homes and proclaiming Him as the King and Head of our
households. By attending this mission, your family will learn and wel-
come a deeper faith and love centered in Christ, and we will learn to
bring joy, healing and new life into our homes. Please join us!

Names will remain on the above prayer list for 60 days from the time
they are requested. At the end of that time, you may renew your request.
How do you do your work? Is it bringing you closer
or further away from the Lord?
Are you an honest worker? Jesus tells the parable where the
boss goes to one of his workers and says: “Prepare a full account
of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.”
We see that this dishonest worker was called to give an account for mishandling funds. The steward was making money through
unjust commissions. Pope Francis commented on this in one of his
homilies in 2013 when he said:
“Some of you might say: ‘But this man only did what everyone
does!’ No, not everyone! Some company administrators, public ad-
ministrators, government administrators . . . But perhaps not many.
It’s an attitude of taking short cuts, of taking the easy road to
earn a living.”
The Holy Father is stating that we must make an honest wage through hard work and not take shortcuts. Ninety percent of our
lives if not more is spent doing work, or studying to prepare for
work in the future. We must recognize that work is Holy and we
are called to sanctify our work, or in other words, to see work as
being a “means of holiness.” There is a saying that in the workplace,
20% of the workers do 80% of the work. Why? People are lazy and
do not work well or efficiently.
The catechism speaks of work in the section on the 7th Com-
mandment: “He shows himself to be a disciple of Christ by car-
rying the cross, daily, in the work he is called to accomplish.
213 Work can be a means of sanctification and a way of animating
earthly realities with the Spirit of Christ.”
Work is not a punishment for sin . . .the pain and the hardships
we endure are the punishment. We were made to work. It says in
the Book of Genesis: “The Lord God took the man and put him in
the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it.” (Gen. 2:15). These two
words in Hebrew, avad (“work” or “till”), and shamar (“keep”), are
also used for the worship of God and keeping his commandments, respectively.
We see that we were made to work, but since man sinned, work
is hard at times, but it is still a means of holiness. United to Jesus,
it becomes a sacrifice that we make to the Lord. It can be a means
of holiness, but we need to do it well, and honestly. That means
that as Catholics we finish our jobs well. Procrastination and
“putting off work until later” usually means not getting the job
finished. Also, we do not participate with things that are contrary
to our faith and that we make sure that if one is an employer we
give our employees a just wage.
In Christ, Fr. Larry

TOLERANCE, PERSECUTION & PROPERTY: The Roots and Na-ture of Maryland Catholic Freedom. Some people identify Maryland as a Catholic colony and a bastion of free exercise of religion. Others think primarily of the persecution of Catholics. Over the century and a half from the founding of Maryland until the Treaty of Paris that recognized American independence, the extent of limits of freedom varied with local, intercolonial, and international circumstances. On Saturday, September 24, at 1:00 PM, St. Ignatius Church in Port Tobacco (8855 Chapel Point Road) will host a presentation on this topic by two outstanding experts on religion in the colo-nial era in Maryland. R. Emmett Curran, emeritus professor at Georgetown University, and Beatriz Hardy, Dean of Libraries and Instructional Resources at Salisbury University, Maryland. For more information, visit www.chapelpoint.org or call the parish at 301-934-8245.
BLESSING OF THE FLEET AT ST. CLEMENT’S ISLAND:
Come and see the Fiat 500L car that transported Pope Francis around Washington and support the Southern Maryland Food Bank! The Papal Fiat will make its way to St. Clement’s Island for the Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday, October 1, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and on Sun-day, October 2, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For Anthony Lickteig will celebrate 2:00 PM Mass on October 2 on St. Clement’s Island and then bless the boats at the site of Maryland’s first colonial landing in 1634 and the birthplace of religious freedom in America. Tickets for the event are $10, which includes a boat ride to St. Clement’s Island, the Blessing of the Fleet, and admission to the St. Clement’s Island Muse-um. The Papal Fiat will be at Mother of Light Shrine adjacent to the boat dock at Colton’s Point. Bring a non-perishable dry food item to fill the Papal Fiat and take your photo with the famous Fiat! Purchase tick-ets at the event. For more information, visit. www.blessingofthefleetsomd.net.
OUR 20TH ANNUAL SACRED HEART PARISH DINNER will be held next Sunday, September 25, 2016, 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM in the Friendship Room. In the past, our parish has always come together in a very special way to make this event a huge success, and we hope this spirit of enthusiasm and camaraderie will carry through this year. We need help in many areas. Spread the word to family and friends! If you are unable to volunteer your time, you can still support the event by attending. Many thanks in advance for your help in making this our best parish dinner ever!
PARISH DINNER RAFFLE: We are asking all par ishioners to please consider purchasing (or selling) the raffle tickets sent to you along with Fr. Larry’s letter in early July. We included three tickets for the Cash Prize Raffle and four tickets for the 50/50 Split the Pot Raffle. Ticket sales are going well, but we have a considerable way to go to reach sales totals from past years. If you wish to purchase all of the tickets provided, simply write a check for $50 payable to Sacred Heart Church and drop it in the mail or collection basket on Sunday. If you choose to purchase only a portion of the tickets provided, keep in mind that each Cash Prize ticket is $10, and the 50/50 Raffle tickets are $5 each. Consider that if each of our 1,500 registered families simply purchased the tickets sent with Fr. Larry’s letter, there would be a potential for winnings of $15,000.00 in the 50/50 Raffle, and the Cash Prize Raffle would net the church $42,000.00! Thanks in advance for participating!
ST. IGNATIUS CHURCH, HILLTOP is having its annual yard sale on Saturday, October 1, 2016, 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There will be a bake sale table, raffle table, and numerous bargains and treasures. Food menu includes breakfast items (sausage on biscuit and coffee), lunch items (hot dogs, hamburgers, Italian Sausage, chips, and sodas), all reasonably priced. Spaces for rent are available at $15 each, first come, first choice of location. Call John Minichino (301-743-3514).
