• Operators are demanding coherent solutions for metro networks – Key benefits: Ease of

deployment, flexibility, scalability – Key challenge: cost vs. 10G

• Several approaches being proposed for lowering cost: CFP, integrated photonics, etc.

• 200G 16QAM is a compelling solution, achieving double the capacity at nearly half the cost per bit of 100G QPSK

• Pros – Works on same network, same DWDM grid – Same optics – Double the fiber capacity – Half the cost per Gb/s – ~40% less power per Gb/s

• Cons – ~6.5dB higher (worse) OSNR sensitivity – More susceptible to DWDM nonlinearity – <1000km reach with today’s technology

Tradeoffs

• Fundamental tradeoff in coherent optical transmission is – Spectral efficiency versus OSNR (Reach)

• For example a single wavelength 200G system could use the following modulation & symbol rate: – DP-QPSK @ 64GBaud (75GHz) – Long Haul (>3000km)

– DP-8QAM @ 43GBaud (50GHz) – Long Haul/Metro (~1500km)

– DP-16QAM @ 32GBaud (37.5GHz) – Metro (~800km)

• However, higher symbol rates (>32GBaud) require next generation (higher bandwidth) optical component and ADC/DAC technologies
