TheIntercollegiateAthleticsProgramatSouthernIllinoisUniversityEdwardsvillehasbeendevelopedwiththebeliefthatintercollegiatesports,subscribingtotheprinciplesofgoodsportsmanship,rulescomplianceandintegrity,arebeneficialactivitieswhichcontributetothephysical,intellectualandsocialexperiencesoftheentireUniversitycommunity.IntercollegiateAthleticsshouldcomplementtheinstructional,research,andserviceprogramsoftheUniversityandmustfunctionwithintheframeworkoftheUniversity’soverallgoals. InharmonywiththestatedmissionoftheUniversity,thegoalsofIntercollegiateAthleticsaretoenhancethephysicalandintellectualabilitiesofthoseparticipatingintheprogramandtoprovideforthephysicalandsocialwelfareofourstudent-athletes,aswellastoprovidespectatorbenefitsfortheUniversitycommunityandthecommunityatlarge.TherecognitionthatthegoalsoftheAthleticsProgramareintegratedintothegoalsofthegeneralacademicprogramshouldguidetheactivitiesofthoseresponsiblefortheconductofIntercollegiateAthletics.SIUEAthleticsmustenhance,notdetractfrom,theUniversity’seducationalprogram. IntercollegiateAthleticsisintendedtoprovidestudentswithopportunitiestoenhancetheireducation,torepresenttheirUniversityandtoparticipateinathleticswhiledevelopingskillandunderstanding.ParticipationintheIntercollegiateAthleticsProgramisalwayssecondarytotheacademicobligationofthestudent.Tothisend,itistheresponsibilityofthoseadministeringtheprogramtoschedulethelengthofplayingseasons,thefrequencyofpracticesessionsandthenumberofcontestssothattheyshallnotunreasonablyconflictwithstudents’obligationstoattendclassregularly;tostudy;todeveloptheirintellectual,moralandsocialfaculties;andtograduatefromtheUniversityaseducatedmenandwomen.

ChancellorVaughnVandegrift Dr.VaughnVandegriftwasappointedtheseventhchancellorofSouthernIllinoisUniversityEdwardsvilleonJuly1,2004. Emphasizingteaching,researchandpublicserviceprograms,SIUEisafully-accreditedpublicinstitution—beautifullysituatedinEdwardsvilleon2,660acresjust25milesfromSt.Louis—awardingdegreesin44baccalaureateand64master’sprogramsencompassingtheartsandsciences,nursing,education,business,andengineering.TheSchoolsofPharmacyandDentalMedicineawardfirstprofessionaldegrees,theD.M.D.andthePharm.D.Forthefourthconsecutiveyear,SIUEhasbeenheraldedbyU.S.NewsandWorldReportforitsSeniorAssignmentProgram,anintegrativelearningexperiencerequiredofallseniorspriortograduation.U.S.NewslistsSIUEamongthetop10publicuniversitiesintheMidwest-Master’scategoryforthesecondconsecutiveyear.ThemaincampusincludesUniversityPark,aresearchparkestablishedtoenhanceeconomicdevelopment.TheEdwardsvillecampusalsoissupplementedbycampusesinEastSt.LouisandAlton. Sincethetimeofhisappointment,VandegrifthasbeeninstrumentalinguidingtheUniversitytowardfulfillmentofitsvisiontoberecognizednationally,asapremierMetropolitanUniversity,fortheexcellenceofitsprogramsanddevelopmentofprofessionalandcommunityleaders.Hedevelopedaplanforachievementofthevisionbytheyear20�5thatcombinesthevaluesandgoalsoftheUniversitywithknowledgegainedfromhis33-yearcareerinhighereducation. VandegriftisaNewJerseynativewhocametoSIUEfromGeorgiaSouthernUniversity,acomprehensive,residentialuniversityof�6,000students,whereheservedasProvost,VicePresidentforAcademicAffairs,ChiefInformationOfficerandProfessorofChemistry.Hisareasofresponsibilityincludedsixacademiccolleges,graduatestudies,internationalstudies,informationtechnologyservices,thelibrary,continuingeducationandpublicservice,amuseum,awildlifeeducationcenterandabotanicalgarden. Vandegrifthasbeentheauthororco-authorofgrantsresultinginmorethan$3millioninfundingfromvarioussourcesduringhiscareer,includingsupportfromtheCommonwealthofKentucky,theNationalScienceFoundation,theFatsandProteinsResearchFoundationandtheAT&TCorporation.Hehasalsobeenactiveinworkingwithfoundationsanddonorswhohavemademajorgiftsinsupportoftheinstitutionswherehehasworked.Dr.Vandegriftisauthorofmorethan40professionalpublicationsandpresentationsincludingworkspublishedinBiochemistry,JournalofAgriculturalandFoodChemistry,andMethodsinEnzymology.VandegriftisamemberoftheAmericanChemicalSocietyandtheAmericanAssociationfortheAdvancementofScience. VandegriftcurrentlyservesontheBoardsofDirectorsofLeadershipCouncilSouthwesternIllinois;UniversityPark,SIUE;FocusSt.Louis;St.LouisRegionalCommerceandGrowthAssociation;UnitedWayofGreaterSt.Louis;theSouthwesternIllinoisHigherEducationConsortium(SIHEC);theSouthernIllinoisCollegiateCommonMarket(SICCM)andtheExecutiveCouncilofTheAllianceofEdwardsville-GlenCarbon.HehasbeenelectedintothehonorsocietiesofOmicronDeltaKappa,SigmaXi,BetaGammaSigmaandPhiKappaPhi.HehasprovidedserviceonboardsinsupportofscienceeducationandhasbeenlistedinWho’sWhointheEast,AmericanMenandWomenofScienceandWho’sWhoinFrontierScienceandTechnology. HereceivedhisPh.D.fromOhioUniversityinbiochemistry,studyingtheeffectsofnuclearhistoneproteinsontheconformationofDNA.Hisbachelor’sandmaster’sinchemistrywereobtainedatMontclairStateUniversity. Vandegriftandhiswife,Sue,aretheparentsofthreeadultchildren.Bethisanattorney,whileDavidandMarkarebothemployedinprivatebusiness.VaughnandSuearetheproudgrandparentsoftwogranddaughters,VaughnandCamilla.

DirectorofAthleticsBradHewitt Dr.BradleyL.HewitthasservedastheDirectorofIntercollegiateAthleticsatSIUEsinceAugust2002.Dr.Hewittserved13yearsinnumerouspositionsatSIUEbeforesteppinginastheseventhDirectorofAthleticsintheschool’shistory. Hewitt’schargewastoregainSIUE’sstoriednationalsuccessofthe1970sand1980s(16nationalchampionships)andexpandthatsuccessacrossabroad-basedathleticprogram.SincehisstartastheDirectorofathletics,37CougarteamshavecompetedintheirrespectiveNCAAindividualorteamchampionships.HewitthashelpedelevateSIUE’spreviousbest131stplacefinishintheU.S.SportsAcademyDirectors’Cuptoa78thplacefinishin2004,a37thplacefinishin2005,a4thplacefinishin2006,andan11thplacefinishin2007.Forthe2006-07seasons,theCougarswonboththeprestigiousGreatLakesValleyConference(GLVC)All-SportsTrophyandtheCommissioner’sCup.TheCougarswontheAll-SportsTrophywith�4�.5points,thehighesttotalpointsrecordedinasingleseasonsincetheawardwasconceivedmorethan25yearsago.TheCommissioner’sCupisawardedtotheprogramthatproducestheoverallbestfinishintheleague’sseven“core”sports.SIUEpostedtopfivefinishesinsixofthesevensportsthatcountintheCommissioner’sCupstandings,includingconferencetitlesinmen’ssoccerandsoftball.Alsoconsideredarevolleyball,men’sandwomen’sbasketball,andbaseball.Thepinnacleofachievementwasa2007nationalchampionshipinsoftball. In1994,Hewitt,inhisroleasAssistantAthleticDirector,servedastheUniversity’svenuemanagerfortheUnitedStatesOlympicFestival-’94trackandfieldandwrestlingevents.Since1994,HewitthasheldseveralpositionsatSIUE,includingactingChiefExecutiveOfficeroftheSIUEFoundationandactingViceChancellorofUniversityRelations(1998-2000),adjunctgraduateprofessorintheDepartmentofKinesiologyandHealthEducation(1996-2003),andAssistantViceChancellorforUniversityRelations(1994-1998and2000-present).From1995-1998and2000-2002,HewittwastheinternalandexternalliaisonfortheViceChancellorofUniversityRelations,overseeingAlumniServices;SIUEFoundation;PublicAffairs;PhotographicServices;andUniversityGraphics,Publications,andPrinting. Hewitthasadiversebackgroundinintercollegiateathletics.BeforecomingtoSIUE,hewasthedirectorofsportsmarketingandassociateheadfootballcoachatMorningsideCollegeinSiouxCity,Iowa;therecruitingcoordinatorandassistantfootballcoachatSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale;andrecruitingcoordinator,trackeventmanagerandassistantfootballcoachathisalmamaterTheUniversityofCentralMissouriinWarrensburg. Hewittearnedabachelor’sinmathematicsin1981fromCentralMissouriaswellasamaster’sinathleticadministrationin1982.HewittcompletedhisdoctorateineducationatSIUCin�994. Hewitthasbeenahighly-activememberoftheareacommunityservingasamemberoftheboardofdirectorsfortheSt.LouisSportsCommissionsince1999,amemberoftheboardofdirectorsfortheEdwardsville-GlenCarbonChamberofCommerce,amemberoftheBoardofGovernorsforthePrairieStateGamesandasamemberoftheStateGamesofAmericaBoardofDirectors.HeispresentlyservinghissecondtermasamemberoftheEdwardsvilleDistrict7SchoolBoard. In2006,HewittcompletedtheexecutivemanagementprogramattheSportsManagementInstitute,whichprovidesspecializedexecutivemanagementprogramsforsportsmanagementprofessionals.TheSportsManagementInstitutewasdevelopedin1989asajointventureoftheathleticdepartmentsandbusinessadministrationschoolsoftheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia,theUniversityofNotreDameandtheUniversityofNorthCarolina. Significantfundraisingsuccess(especiallyinfacilitydevelopment)hasbeenacapstoneofHewitt’sprofessionalcareer.Since2000Hewittwasinstrumentalinsecuringseveralmulti-milliondollarfacilitygiftsandpledges($10millionplusintotal)fortheUniversity.Thesefacilitiesgiftshelpedbuildthe12,000sq.ft.BirgerHall(SIUE’sFoundationandAlumniBuilding),the1,500seatSimmonsCooperBaseballComplex,andthe5,000sq.ft.SIUEsoftballstadium/clubhouse.HewasasignificantmemberoftheSIUEFoundationteamthatsawexponentialgrowthintheFoundation’sannualgivingcampaignandendowmentfrom1995-2002.SincerejoiningCougarAthleticsin2002,hehasfocusedonincreasingtheathleticendowment,doublingthenumberofendowedscholarships. HewittandhiswifeKay,aprofessionaleducator,resideinEdwardsville.TheirdaughterLorenisa2007graduateofSIUEandtennisalumnae,andtheirsonMatthewisaseniorattheUniversityofIllinoismajoringinmechanicalengineering.

TheCougarlogowasintroducedinOctober2007asSIUEbeganitstransitiontoNCAADivisionIathletics.Thelogowasdesignedby4AlarmStudiosinSt.Louis.Thelogoreceivedagoldawardinthe23rdAnnualAdmissionsAdvertisingAwardscompetition,theoldestandlargestcompetitionofitskindinthecountry.Morethan1,000colleges,universitiesandsecondaryschoolssubmittedentriesforthecompetition.

AftereightyearsofassistantcoachingexperienceunderHuneke,Kalishwilltakeoveraprogramthathasproduced2�NCAATournamentappearances,eightFinalFouryears(’72,’75,’77,’79,’82,’01,’04,’05),twonationalrunners-up(1975,2004)andtwonationalchampionships(1972and1979). SinceKalisharrivedin2000hehasseentheCougarsintotheNCAAtournamentonsixoccasions,includingtwoFinalFoursin200�and2005andarunner-upin2004.TheCougarssoccerteamhasalsopostedawinningpercentageof.754witharecordof��8-32-�9,includinga72-9-9GLVCrecordsinceKalishbecameapartoftheCougarcoachingstaff. Inregularseasonconferenceplaysince2000,KalishhasassistedHuneketoapairofthirdplacefinishes,twosecondplacefinishesandfourGLVCseasontitles.Inaddition,theCougarshavefinishedrunnerupintheGLVCtournamentontwooccasionsin200�and2003andwonthetournamenttwicein2002and2006.
KalishisalsolargelyresponsibleforthegrowthandmaturityofseveralCougarplayersandhasassistedinthedevelopmentof�3All-AmericanplayersforSIUEincludingfourthispastseasonDustinAttarian,GregCrook,ZachBauerandRandyRoy. 2009 Season Preview Whenthe2009SouthernIllinoisUniversityEdwardsvillemen’ssoccerregularseasonofficiallyopensSept.1atEvansville,CougarcoachKevinKalishisreadytoseejusthowgoodhisteamcanbecome. Itwilllikelybeaworkinprogress,admittedKalish.Thatdoesn’tmeantheCougarshavelowexpectations.That’squitethecontrary. “Wereallydon’tknowhowgoodthisteamcanbecome,”saidKalish.“Iamreallyexcitedtoseehowthisteamdevelopsandwhatleveltheycanreach.” TheteamisanchoredbyagroupofseniorplayerswhounderstandsSIUE’ssystemandwhatittakestowinattheDivisionIlevel.SeniorZachBauer(St.Louis)returnsinthebackwithjuniorRandyRoy(St.Louis)providingleadershipatmidfield. “Zachisoneofthebestplayersincollegesoccer,”Kalishsaid.“He’stheplayerwelooktowardsforleadershipandstabilityintheback.” Roy,aformerJackBlakeAwardrecipient,isanextremelygiftedcentermidfielder,notedKalish,whocandominateoffensivelyand
defensively. “Randyisourmidfieldgeneral.Hehastheabilitytoimpacteachgameheplaysin,”saidKalish. Bauer,likeRoy,satoutlastseasonwhentheCougarsenteredthetransitiontoreturnSIUEmen’ssoccerbacktotheNCAADivisionIlevel.SIUEhasjustthe2009seasonleftinitstransitionasthe“fast-track”men’steam.In2010,SIUEbecomesaplayingmemberoftheMissouriValleyConferenceandwillbeeligiblefortheNCAAChampionships. Kalishwarnedagainstlookingtoofarahead,evenoneseason.“Thatwouldn’tbefairtoourseniorsortheplayersontheteamthisseason,”hesaid.“Wearefocusedonmakingsurethisteamreachesitsfullpotential.” TheCougarshaveasolidgroupofthreegoalkeepersjockeyingforposition.SophomoresNickCollico(Florissant,Mo.)andScottMeyer(Ballwin,Mo.)eachsawlimitedtimeoverthelasttwoseasonswithMeyersittingoutalloflastseason.Kalishsaidhewouldfeelconfidentstartingeitherplayerastheseasonprogresses.FreshmanJohnBerner(St.Louis)joinsthemixafterahighly-successfulprepcareer. 2008 Season Recap The2008seasonwaslikethereturntothegoodolddays.SouthernIllinoisUniversityEdwardsvillemen’soccerwasplayinganNCAADivisionIscheduleagain,anditfeltgood. KevinKalishtookoverthereignsastheteam’sheadcoach,becom-ingthethirdcoachinschoolhistory.KalishhassometoughactstofollowinBobGuelker,whowon216gamesandtwonationalchampionshipsin19seasons,andEdHuneke,whorecorded251victoriesin22seasons. It’sachallengeKalishwasreadytopursuehavingcompletedeightseasonsasanassistantunderHuneke.Duringthoseeightseasons,SIUEap-pearedintheNCAATournamentsixtimes,finishingsecondin2004andmakingtheFinalFourin200�and2005. The2008Cougarsbeganonahighnotewitha1-0victoryoverMis-souriState.SeniorBobRidderscoredthegame’sonlygoalagainstwhatwillbeafutureMissouriValleyConferenceopponent. SIUEtookapairoftoughlossestoDrakeandNorthernIllinoisbeforereboundingforapairofroadwinsagainstWrightStateandIPFW.ChrisAnza-lonescoredinbothofthegames.TheCougarswere4-0whenAnzalonescored.
FreshmanJackTwellmanscoredhisfirstcareergoalina3-2lossatDayton,whichendedathree-gamelosingskidfortheCougars. SIUEdefeatedMcKendreeinitsonlyofficialhomecontest2-0.AnzaloneandTwellmanscoredbeforeacrowdof�,538atKorteStadium. TheCougarspumpedupthedefenseina0-0tiewithMemphis.EventhoughSIUEdidnotscore,thedefense’sstrongshowingheldoneofConferenceUSA’stopteamswithoutagoal. SIUEstumbledabittowardtheendoftheseasonbeforeclosingoutwithanimpressive3-0winatCentralArkansas(UCA).Aftertheseasonwascomplete,SIUElearnedthatbothUCAandSIUEwouldjointheMissouriValleyConferencetobecometheseventhandeighthmembersbeginningwiththe20�0season.
