MTA Sign Manual

This section establishes a set of comprehensive guidelines to assist designers and contractors in their production of effective signage for subway riders. This is accomplished by addressing separately the four main areas of a typical subway station: the Street Level, the Fare Control Area,Mezzanine/Passageway Areas, and the Platform Level. Each area is graphically illus-trated, and specific requirements are discussed in detail.

The purpose of a standardized signage system is to move riders into, within, and out of a station efficiently through the use of a standardized set of graphic elements and proper placement of signs. (Standard graphic elements are discussed in Section 2.) The proper placement of signs addressed in this section is determined according to the principle of “decision points,” or specific locations where riders must make decisions regarding their direction of movement.

Information provided in this section illustrates typical decision points and provides a guide to fundamental sign requirements for all stations. Specific conditions may necessitate appropriate modification.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has created new signage requirements for many locations within stations. Specific areas where signage is affected by ADA have been noted in this section. For a fuller explanation, however, please refer to Section 7.

This illustration shows a typical station entrance where signage originally appeared on outside railings as well as on the back and front of the panel at the entrance. To integrate this type of station into the standardized sig-nage system:1. The side railings will carry the identification sign “Subway,” indicating the immediate entrance on the out-side only. Side railing identification signs shall also bear the MTA New York City Transit signature, placed in the lower right-hand corner of the sign (see p.3.1 for specifica-tions).2. Station and line identification will be represented on the panel facing the passenger as he or she enters the station. It will also appear on the reverse side of the same panel. This panel also contains any qualifications, such as service in one direction only. See Section 7 for additional ADA-required signs.

This illustration shows the architectural structure of a typi-cal elevated station. In integrating this type of station into the standardized system, all station and line identification will be represented on a panel at the top of the entrance.

This illustration shows a typical entrance through a building. This signage should always appear at the line of the entrance (not recessed). It should contain the same information as other entrances. For part-time entrances (see page 1.5), the sign includes the hours the entrance is open, whether a customer needs to have a MetroCard or can buy one to enter, the hours an agent is on duty and the nearest entry where an agent is available full-time.

Note: A blank porcelain sign is to be placed on back of the subway entrance identification sign.

To prevent a customer’s mistaking an exit for an entrance, signage will appear on the side railings and on both sides of the panel above the exit steps when room permits. These signs consist of panels with the words “No Entry” and a prohibitory icon in red.

For part-time entrances, a sign should be placed on the concrete base of the railing over the stairs. This is called the coping and the sign is called the coping sign. The sign includes the hours the entrance is open, whether a customer needs to have a MetroCard or can buy one to enter, the hours an agent is on duty and the nearest entry where an agent is available full-time.

When room permits. show entrance information on side railing sign also.

MTA Sign Manual System OverviewMezzanine/PassagewaySigns for Exiting Passengers

For exiting passengers, the sign sequence is the reverse of that for entering passengers’ signs. Where a stair leads to all exits, only the word “Exit” with the appropriate directional arrow is used then differentiation of multiple exit options is made on sub-sequent signs.

Where there is a choice of exits, appropriate information on the alternatives should be added.

At station exits, specific information regarding the street-level intersection should be added. The name of the street always appears first.

At stations where passengers customarily transfer to buses or commuter rail to continue their trip (intermodal stations), appropriate bus or train information should be added.

Passengers exiting trains may want connection to another route in the same subway station complex rather than exiting the station. In this case, directional information to other train routes should be included with exit information (see page 1.15).

This is an example of a new “Exit” module being uswed where space is tight. Text for “Exit” should be 4 1/4” with 5” arrow.

MTA Sign Manual System OverviewPlatform Level Signs for Entering Passengers

The train information or platform edge sign is the final sign in the station entry sequence. It displays general destination/ direction information, route information, and detailed service information. It is located at the platform edge, parallel to the track near the foot (or head) of a staircase or escalator leading to the platform, and the entrances leading directly onto the platform in such areas which use high entrance turnstyles. It is repeated at all stairs leading to the platform (see page 3.2).

This sign is to be placed at both ends of the platform, installed on end of platform gates, to warn passengers not to proceed beyond that point. On side platforms, only one sign is required at either end. On island platforms, either one or two signs are to be placed at each end, depending on the distance between signs or the presence of any obstructions that would impair visibility fron one side or the other (see page 3.7).

Secondary Station IdentificationTo reinforce the visibility of the station name in stations with columns, the station name is repeated in a smaller size on signs mounted on the columns. The signs are to be placed on both sides of every other column with the face of the sign oriented perpendicular to the track.

For stations whose names include both numbers and names, e.g., 14 St–Union Square, column ID signs should display each alternate name on every fourth column.

Primary Station IdentificationThe station name is to be mounted along the platform at 60’ intervals from the center. This sign should be installed so as not to be obscured by other signs, architectural conditions, or fixtures. On the primary station-identification sign, the name of the sta-tion should be spelled out in full. Abbreviations are permitted to designate Avenue or Street only where space is limited. Where the station also has a secondary name (e.g., 81 Street/Museum of natural History), the secondary name may be placed in smaller letters on the right side of the sign. Wall-mounted signs are allowed in special cases; never are signs to cover mosaic tiles. Contact Station Signage for details.

Transfers to another route without paying an additional fare is indicated by the use of the appropriate route designator. If the transfer leads to service in both directions, only the route designator is used.

All stairs leading from the platform must be identified at the foot of the stairs. The sign must also contain the appropriate direc-tional arrow and the appropriate streets it leads to.

If the transfer is to service in one direction only, the direc-tion of service or destination should also be included.

Many stairs provide access to both exits and transfers. In these cases, the exit information always appears on the left, before the transfer information. The exit module may be shortened to accommodate limited space (see page 3.3).

Passengers descending stairs to island platforms see this sign to confirm travel information. It appears on back of exit sign.

MTA Sign Manual Section 2Graphic Standards

Instructions and information for the creation and use of graphic standards for NYC Transit signs follow. Accurately designed signs help the MTA fulfill its commitment to improving the sys-tem and guiding the customer to or from the train with the cor-rect information when and where it’s needed. Strict adherence to these design standards is crucial to attaining that goal.

The module is the basic element of the sign system. It is made up of the following elements:A 1 1/2" black band: used for all signs except Type D (see pages 4.8–11, Pan-formed Hanging), where it is replaced by the sign hanger.B 1/8" white band: always used.C Message panel: generally black, but modules may be red for some specific signs (see page 2.25 and Section 3, Sign Layouts).

modules. Wherever possible any module containing text should be extended to the next whole foot before other elements are added.

This illustration shows a sign made up of multiple modules containing arrow, text, and a route designator. Note that the text modules have been extended to the next whole foot before adding other elements. In the layout and specification of sign sizes, text length must be measured accurately so an adequate number of modules is provided for. Blank modules should be used to separate different messages.

The standard sign module with the addition of text, route designator, directional arrow, or symbol is used alone or in combination to make up station signs. Blank panels are used to separate two different messages on the same sign.Overall length of sign panels is generally measured in increments of one foot (12"). Signs up to 8' long are fabricated as a single panel. For longer signs, place joint on a module division; joints should not break letters or words.Text may run across two or more

Low ceiling heights, which are common throughout the subway system, often require the use of reduced-size signs (half height) to maintain proper clearance (see pages 2.27–2.30).

Occasionally, because of limiting existing conditions, sign modules may be combined vertically as shown in this illustration. This situation is most frequently encountered at street level railings (see page 1.3). Note that all other graphic standards apply in this example.

Precise dimensions of sign modules may be varied to fit architectural features such as railings and existing sign frames. All graphic elements, however, should conform to standard sizes.Note that the 1 1/2" black band at the top of the sign remains constant and the 1/8" white band also remains constant.

Consistent nomenclature is fundamental to an effective sign system. Determining nomenclature to describe service destinations for directional signs depends on:1. The station location.2. The direction of travel. This diagram, and the examples that follow, illustrate the approach to providing information on destinations. A general rule is to use the last station name when the station terminal is in the same borough as the station being signed; if the terminal is in a different borough from the station being signed, use the borough names through which the train travels.

Note: In Manhattan only, the use of Uptown or Downtown is also appropriate.

On signs where the “U-turn” arrow is used, arrows that point in standard directions (up, down, left, right, etc.) must be of equal weight to the U-turn arrow, as in the illustration at left.

In situations where a reverse direction is appropriate, a “U-turn” arrow may be used to direct customers to turn and walk in the opporsite direction.

The arrow is generally located to the left of other information on the sign, except for the right pointing arrow.

When two directions are given

on the same sign, separate them with a full 12" blank module. If the sign contains more than one arrow, the right-pointing arrow may be placed on the right.

When space limitations do not permit the use of a blank panel to separate messages, a 1/8" vertical white line should be used instead.

An arrow may appear on the right when there are two means of reaching the same destination or when a site-specific situation warrants it.

The porcelain enamel colors used for the discs and diamonds should match as closely as possible the Pantone Matching System (PMS®) colors given for each symbol (see page 2.24). Sign fabricators should submit swatches of each color for approval to NYC Transit. All letters or numbers appear as white dropouts except for the N, and R lines, which have a black letter. Routes are not to be designated IRT, IND, or BMT. All signs with reference to these names should be replaced.

To make mapping and signs comprehensible to passengers, each of the subway’s trunk lines is distinguished by its own color, and within each set of trunk lines, each route is accorded a letter or number from an alphanumeric system. Colors are assigned according to trunk lines based on the avenue of operation in Manhattan. Thus, trains that operate on Seventh Avenue (1, 2, 3, and 9) are red; on Eighth Avenue (A, C, E) are blue, etc. A disc or diamond symbol is used to designate the hours of service; a diamond signifies rush-hour service only; a disc signifies all other services, both full- and part-time.This system of colors, discs/diamonds, and letters/numbers is used on all directional signage, subway and bus maps, and on the trains themselves. On directional signage, discs and diamonds are arranged in alphabetical order from left to right, followed by numbers. When symbols are used on two rows, they should be arranged horizontally with care taken to keep color groups together on the same line.

Wherever possible, one route designator symbol per 12" module should be used on directional signs as shown above. On occasion, however, space limitations require smaller size symbols, in which case the layout to the left should be followed.

See page 2.22 for number/letter size.

On platform-edge train information signs and other instances where route designators are used as part of a line of 3" text, a 3 1/2" diameter route designator should be used.

On occasions when a 10" diameter route designator cannot be accommodated on a full-size sign panel and a 4 3/4" diameter bullet appears visually too small, a 6" diameter bullet on a 12" panel may be substituted.

Letters are positioned top and bottom between guidelines and optically centered left to right. Letters which are not symmetrical may have to be shifted one way or the other to appear centered. The letter height is based on the uppercase letter “X.” Rounded letters such as “C” or “S” will ride slightly beyond the guidelines.

Colors in subway signs designate function. Route designator colors correspond to the NYC Transit subway map and are based on avenues of operation in Manhattan. Sign colors are used to distinguish general informational and directional signs (black) from exit and warning signs (red). All text is white, except as noted. Permanent signs in the subway system are made of steel with a porcelain enamel matte finish. Exceptions to this, for temporary signs only, are the use of adhesive-backed vinyl, sheet metal, and embedded fiberglass, with silk-screened colors. In addition to signage, other elements are subject to color standards indicated in the chart below.

Symbols

In an effort to standardize the increasing use of symbols in subway signage, a symbol module has been introduced. This module will serve to identify such information as bus routes, public toilets, or other services which may be introduced in the future. The basic icon is 4" by 4" on directional signs and 6" by 6" when mounted onto structures. The appropriate symbol is shown in black inside a white square with rounded corners, if any. See Section 7 for additional information on the use of universal mobility-impaired symbols. The wheelchair symbol is called an ISA or International Symbol for Accessibility and is used to designate routes and facilities (e.g., elevators, service gates, etc.) that are accessible to the disabled.

Low ceiling heights are common throughout the subway system, requiring the use of reduced-height signs. Signs of this size provide optimum location of passenger information and insures that the 6’-8" clearance from floor to bottom of sign is maintained (see page 4.15).

The basic sign module for half-height signs is 6" by 6". Except for the module size, all dimensions remain the same as for full-size signs. Color and other specifications also remain the same. Dimensions for graphic elements are given on the following pages. The overall length of half-height signs is to be rounded up to the nearest 6".The sign module is the basic graphic element of the sign system. It consists of the following elements:A 1 1/2" black band; used for

all signs except Type D (see Pan-formed—Hanging, Section 4), in which it is replaced by the sign hanger.

B 1/8" white band; always used.

C Message panel; generally black, but may be red for some specific signs. (See page 2.25 and Section 3, Sign Layouts).

The platform-edge train information sign provides service information for all trains stopping at a particular platform.

These signs consist of three parts:

A The destination/direction information carried through from passageway/mezzanine signage.

B The appropriate route designator or designators.C Service information (see next page). For platforms where

more than one train stops, parts A, B, or C may have to be repeated.

Service information is provided by Operations Planning; accurate graphic standards are overseen by Station Signage (both are located at 2 Broadway, Manhattan).

Intermodal information is to be included in all new subway signage. The information will be incorporated into control area “Exit” signage to direct passengers to bus stops in the vicinity of each exit. Bus information may also be used on mezzanine-level directional signs where passengers can exit for various buses at one end of the station or the other.

The bus information will consist of a 12” module containing the bus module according to the standards for symbol signs. This module will be followed by a panel giving the route numbers of the buses that stop near that exit. The bus numbers will consist of the route number and the borough prefix for each route. The icon and bus numbers are 3” in height.

The borough prefixes are:

MTA Sign Manual Customer Information Centers (CICs)Overview

The Customer Information Center (CIC) is a group of frames permanently affixed to available wall space located near a booth or kiosk in the unpaid full time fare control area. The decision to install in part-time control areas depends on field conditions. The location is based on passenger traffic and flow, visual harmony with surroundings, whether it’s within sight of booth agent or kiosk, and availability of wall space.

The typical CIC display consists of the following items: 1. Neighborhood Institutional Directory

2. Neighborhood Map 3. Subway Map 4. Service Information Board with Take-One’s

Neighborhood Institutional Directories are installed at stations where an institution exists. In stations where there is no room for a full Customer Information Center, install just a Neighborhood Institutional Directory and Neighborhood Map in close proximity to the booth or kiosk. At intermodal transfer stations, a bus map will also be installed.

The Neighborhood Institutional Directory is described on page 5.2.

Note: For any questions call Stations Department.

The primary purpose of a waiting area is to reduce crime-related incidents within transit facilities by concentrating passengers in designated station areas (mezzanine paid areas and platforms) while they wait for trains. These areas are located where they can also be monitored by NYC Transit personnel (token booth agents, train dispatchers, etc.) and/or closed circuit television.

Space requirements for an off-hour waiting area is approximately 450 to 900 square feet (typically two or three fifteen-foot column bays on an island, side platform or mezzanine). In stations with two side platforms and no mezzanine, there should be an area on each platform. The designated area should be defined by a Type D sign (see page 4.8). the height of the sign should be 13 5/8" (as per NYC Transit standards for a Type D sign) and 8'0" in length, with 4 1/4" text for full size signs. In cases where this is

insufficient clearance to adhere to these standards, refer to the standards for reduced-height signs.

Each waiting area will have:1. Provision for a minimum of six seats;2. Additional lighting so that light levels are increased over ambient station levels, and both the waiting are and the graphics are clearly visible;3. Provision for CCTV, monitored by token booth agents and train annunciators; a talk-back system where applicable;4. Trash receptacle. All advertising, clocks, and other obstructions should be removed from inside the area and from the vicinity to allow clear visibility.

It is the policy of NYC Transit to permit placement of signs bearing the name and location of qualified public institutions in the subway station closest to the institution.

The Neighborhood Institutional Directory is designed to be customer-friendly and to easily guide customers to their destinations for local hospitals, schools, tourist destinations, police and municipal services. The institutions pay a one-time fee per listing which includes their names, addresses and letter and number coded to the Neighborhood map. Signage is limited to 2 1/2” x 22” panels in the directory.

Applications for the installation of signs must be made in writing to:

MTA Sign Manual Special SignsTemporary (Construction)

Temporary directional signs are often required during construction work when permanent signs are removed or obscured by barriers. To insure the integrity and effectiveness of signage during station construction, it is essential that temporary signs be consistent with permanent signage. Temporary signs should strictly conform to the graphic standards in this manual (see Sections 2 and 3). Major differences between temporary and permanent signage are in the materials used (temporary signs are made from a single sheet of prepainted aluminum with applied vinyl graphics, secured with temporary fasteners) and their sizes; because the areas in which they are placed are often confined, temporary signs may be smaller than permanent signs.

Trailblazers are often used as temporary signs to indicate alternate access to platforms when the normal access has been interrupted. They are placed on barricades or columns at frequent intervals for reinforcement of the message. Text is not used on trailblazers. If smaller signs than those shown below are required, use the specifications for half-height signs (see pages 2.27-30). Station Signage must review all temporary signs for consistency.

Materials and FabricationSign plate: 1/16” aluminum sheet metal with double-sided black enamel finish.1/4” holes drilled through four corners for attachment purposes.Use of adhesive is acceptable for mounting if necessary.Graphics2 mil permanent vinyl; use colors indicated on page 2.24.Laminate surface after application of graphics with 2 mil polyvinyl fluoride (Du Pont Kevlar or approved equal).

On July 26, 1990, President Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The law, which pro-tects the civil rights of individuals with disabilities, is the most sweeping legislation of its kind ever enacted.

The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with dis-abilities in employment, government services, public accom-modations and commercial facilities. Regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the U.S. Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board), and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), specify requirements for new construction and alterations of office and transportation facilities, including specifications for signage. All of NYC Transit's office and transportation facili-ties fall under ADA regulations.

In order to ensure compliance with ADA requirements, this section has been incorporated into the sign manual. Ultimately, all ADA compliance specifications will be included in the manual; they must be consulted on every signage project for which a work order or "notice to proceed" was issued on or after January 26, 1992.

ADA guidelines indicate that the signs designed for NYC Transit must meet the specifications in this section. Additionally, you must contact NYC Transit Station Signage Department (2 Broadway) before producing any Tactile-Braille signage outlined in this section.

Should you have any questions about interpretation of the information, please contact the NYC Transit attorney responsi-ble for ADA matters.
