    2009 Norse preview

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Three All-Americans are missing from last season’s 28-8 squad, but the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team appears poised to make a run at the Great Lakes Valley Conference title this fall.

NKU, which shared the GLVC East title with Lewis last fall, welcomes back five letterwinners and adds eight newcomers. The Norse must replace setter Natalie Forbes, outside hitter Kristina

Eisenmenger and right-side hitter Kelsey Wesaw, a trio of All-Americans who led NKU to the NCAA Division II Tournament last fall.

The Norse have won at least 20 matches for 16 consecutive seasons, and head coach Carlos Chia said this could be the deepest NKU team in years. Seven of the newcomers are freshmen, but the class is loaded with talent and the competition for playing time should be intense.

“All of (the newcomers) are going to be challenging for a starting position. We are running three or four deep at every position,” Chia said. “The freshmen knew what they’re getting into from the day that they signed. They know exactly who is coming in and who they’re going to have to compete against to be on the floor.”

Two of the freshmen, Jenna Schreiver and Kelly Morrissey, will compete for the starting setter position. Schreiver earned three letters at Notre Dame Academy and led the 9th Region in assists as a senior at 10.5 apg. She was also named the 9th Region Player of the Year as a senior and helped Notre Dame advance to the state tournament. Schreiver also earned all-state honors and was named to the all-tournament team during the state finals.

Morrissey, a graduate of Mount Notre Dame High School in Cincinnati, earned All-Girls’ Greater Cincinnati League honors as a senior after recording 843 assists and 239 digs. She also served up 35 aces in 2008 as the Cougars advanced to the Ohio Division I state semifinals. In addition, Morrissey was named to the All-Ohio first team and helped Mount Notre Dame win the state championship in 2007.

“The lack of experience is going to be the factor early in the season, but beyond that, they’ll be able to perform the way that we’ll need them to do,” Chia said of the two freshmen setters. “They

both come from very good high school programs and have competed against some of the best players in the country for their club programs.”

Junior middle hitter Kim Nemcek earned All-GLVC honors last season and could be NKU’s go-to player this fall. Nemcek recorded 336 kills, attacked at a .334 clip and served up 23 aces. She finished with 99 total blocks and 277 digs.

“The player who made the most strides last year was Kim at the middle hitter,” Chia said. “Given her experience and talent, we expect many good things from Kim this season.”

Sophomore Noelle Peterson, a quick-jumping 5-foot-8 outside hitter, returns to the lineup after collecting 279 kills last year. Senior defensive specialist Megan Dooley enters her fourth season in the Norse system and adds a great deal of experience along with a powerful serve.

Junior libero Chelsea Clark enjoyed a solid 2008 season and finished with 434 digs and a team-leading 41 service aces. She also set a Norse single-match record with 41 digs against Wheeling Jesuit. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Drennen is also back after seeing action in 25 matches and recording 65 kills.

“All of the returning players have been working very hard in the weight room in the off season,” Chia said. “Megan is a senior and has been around some of the best players in our program, so she knows what it takes. Noelle is going to come out and perform much better than last

year. She won’t have to be in the shadow of anybody. We are hoping that Chelsea and Sarah are both going to be very good this

    year.”Sophomore defensive

specialist Kelley Calvi is a transfer from Newman (Kan.), where she recorded 506 digs last season. Freshman defensive specialist Kylee Tarantino is a talented player in the back row who helped Mount Notre Dame

win the state title in 2007. Tarantino was also named to the all-state team in Ohio.

Freshmen Shelby Buschur, Kerbi Elwood and Gennie

Galfano will all compete for significant

playing time as attackers and blockers.

“Every year is a new beginning,” Chia said. “The

lack of experience is going to slow us down a little bit at the start. These players are competing eight to nine months out of the year, and the

only thing that they lack is college experience. Beyond that, they are very physical and everybody is going to be in the running for a starting spot.”

NKU opens the regular season Aug. 28 against Converse (S.C.) at the Tusculum Fall Classic at Greeneville, Tenn.

Noelle Peterson reacts after serving up an ace last season. Peterson is one of three returning starters for NKU, which is seeking its 17th straight 20-win season.

    Northern Kentucky University Head Coach

Carlos Chia is in his ninth season as the volleyball head coach at NKU. Chia, considered one of the top recruiters in the Great Lakes Val-ley Conference, was an assistant coach for the Norse for seven years before being named head coach in 2001.

During Chia’s eight years as head coach, NKU players have earned All-America honors 11 times. Liz Holmes, the current Norse assistant coach, was a three-time All-American under Chia.

NKU posted a 28-8 record last season and won a share of the GLVC East Division championship The Norse also advanced to the NCAA

Division II Tournament and extended their streak of 20-win seasons to 16. The previous year, Chia guided NKU to a 26-9 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

In 2005, Chia led NKU to a 26-7 overall record. Chia also recorded his 100th career coaching victory on Aug. 27, 2005, as his Norse defeated Puerto Rico-Bayamon, 30-25, 21-30, 30-27, 30-27, at San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Chia guided NKU to a 22-9 overall record five years ago, and the Norse finished with a 13-3 mark in the GLVC. Chia was also named GLVC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. NKU advanced to the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament in 2004 before losing to Southern Illinois at Edwardsville.

Chia led NKU to a 26-12 overall record in 2003, and his Norse advanced to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament. NKU - which won the GLVC regular-season title - featured AVCA first team All-American Kristin Koralewski, who was also named the GLVC Player of the Year in both 2003 and 2004.

In 2002, Chia guided NKU to a 22-10 record and a second-place finish at the GLVC Tournament. Among the highlights that year was Norse setter Sara Taylor, who finished No. 1 nationally in assists in NCAA Divi-sion II with an average of 13.82 assists per game. She became the first NKU player to ever lead the nation in that category.

Seven years ago, Chia led NKU to a 28-5 record, and the Norse also captured their fifth consecutive GLVC championship. NKU, which featured 2001 GLVC Player of the Year Bethany Gastright, also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fifth straight season.

Chia earned GLVC Coach of the Year honors in 2001, and his team finished with a No. 17 ranking in the AVCA NCAA Division II poll. NKU also posted an unbeaten season (14-0) in the GLVC in 2001.

Chia is now 198-73 in eight seasons as head coach at NKU. Since joining the NKU coaching staff in 1994, Chia has been a part of seven GLVC championship teams. In 1998, the Norse won the Great Lakes Region title and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in school history. In 1999, the Norse advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four and ended with a national ranking of No. 2 - the highest rating in the program’s history.

Prior to coming to NKU, Chia served as a volleyball coach at Mount Notre Dame High School in Cincin-nati and helped the team capture the 1991 district championship in southwest Ohio.

Chia was head coach at Thomas More College from 1988-90 and he also coached Junior Olympic vol-leyball for five years. An avid volleyball player, Chia was a member of the 1972 Peruvian National Team that placed fourth at the first-ever South American Championships in Brazil.

    Liz HolmesAssistant Coach

Liz Holmes begins her second season as the assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University. Holmes completed her playing career at NKU in 2007 by becoming the only three-time All-American in Norse volleyball history.

A 2004 graduate of Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Holmes started all four years at NKU. She was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004 and earned honorable mention All-America accolades from the AVCA as a sopho-more and junior. As a senior, Holmes was named GLVC Player of

the Year, Great Lakes Region Player of the Year and the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for volleyball. Holmes also led NKU to a 26-9 record and helped the Norse secure a berth in the NCAA Division II Tour-nament.

She later was named to both the AVCA and Daktronics All-America first teams. Hol-mes finished her career as NKU’s all-time leader in kills with 1,850, and she led the GLVC in hitting percentage her final three years. In addition, Holmes finished seventh all-time in NKU history with 1,191 career digs and second in block assists with 291.

After earning the Margery Rouse Athlete of Distinction Award from the NKU athletic council, Holmes was later named the GLVC’s 2007-08 Woman of the Year. She also earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and was a four-time member of the GLVC All-Academ-ic squad.

Liz Holmes is the new queen of the kill at Northern Kentucky University, and her of-ficial coronation took place Oct. 12, 2007, in Regents Hall.

Holmes became NKU’s all-time career leader in kills as the Norse posted a 30-26, 30-22, 29-31, 30-22 victory over Drury. The 5-foot-10 middle hitter finished with 27 kills and surpassed Bethany Gastright’s NKU record of 1,702 in the third game when she converted an attack off an assist from Natalie Forbes.

The match was stopped at that point with NKU holding a 10-5 lead, and Holmes accepted the ball from Gastright while receiving a standing ovation.

Holmes attacked at a .512 clip for the match and added 16 digs, while Kristina Eisenmenger hammered down 25 kills. Tristen Dye finished with 22 kills and a .386 hitting percentage for NKU. Forbes dished 75 assists while directing the NKU

offense to a .337 hitting percentage. The junior setter also added nine digs.

Ashley Riessen had 13 kills for Drury. The Panthers, who rallied to win the third game, hit just .196 for the match.

NKU held just a 12-11 lead in the third game, but the Norse used an 8-1 run to build a 20-12 advantage and coasted to the win. Eisenmenger keyed the spurt with three consecutive kills, and she also combined with Holmes for a pair of blocks during the run.
