The Jack Mathews Award was established in 1985 to honor the first president of the Heart of Missouri United Way. The Jack Mathews Award is presented to an individual or organization to recognize outstanding leadership, dedication and achievement on behalf of United Way.

The Charlyn Law Memorial Award was first presented in 1987 in memory of the late KOMU-TV 8 promotions director. Charlyn went above and beyond her job responsibilities to work on and promote efforts that build a stronger community. This award is presented to an individual or organization in recognition of outstanding promotion of community events and activities, for United Way and/or its partner agencies, that enhance and improve the overall quality of life in mid-Missouri.

Dear Friends of United Way,

For more than 60 years, the Heart of Missouri United Way has stood strong, as a beacon of hope, bringing help to people in need throughout our community. Today, I am pleased to report that we continue to stand strong because of the generosity and compassion of people like you.

On behalf of every child, every family, every senior citizen and individual who received the assis-tance they needed this year, I thank you. Through 60 programs provided by our 31 Partner Agencies and 3 United Way Initiatives, we provided a safety net of critical human services to people hit hard-est by the economic challenges of the last two years. We were able to stand in the gap for them because of your commitment to standing strong with us.

While 2009 was a challenging year, it was also a year of great opportunity. The loss of our lease precipitated the need to move our offices, a major undertaking for any organization; however, our new facility provides better visibility, greater parking, improved technology and conference space to our Partner Agencies.

Timothy Rich, the agency’s new Executive Director, brought more than 25 years of Columbia-based, non-profit fundraising and management experience to our team – most of it in United Way funded agencies. His ability to communicate our vision and engage our board members, partners and volunteers enabled us to overcome the challenges of a mid-year leadership change. I’m excited about our future with Tim’s energy and leadership.

Meanwhile, Cathy Scroggs, Community Campaign Chair, provided focused leadership, undaunted optimism and built an amazing campaign leadership team that led us to victory once again. We’ll not soon forget her mantra: “Three million… two hundred and eight thousand… nine hundred and seventy eight dollars!” With your partnership, and her leadership, we exceeded that goal by nearly 2%.

It is truly an honor to be president of such a dynamic Board of Directors. I am indebted to them for their thoughtful guidance, impeccable stewardship and enthusiastic commitment to volunteerism. They challenge us to exceed their commitment to service by “living united.”

The first campus based United Way organization at University of Missouri was launched with great success in 2009. Started by a strong executive committee, Mizzou Student United Way has over 40 active members with a desire to bring volunteering and local community based programs to Mizzou’s campus.

In their first year, Mizzou Student United Way actively participated in LIVE UNITED Week 2009 through the MU-KU Student Challenge, a competition between the two schools to raise funds for local agencies; the Tigers were victorious in the competition. Activities included a Midnight Pancake Breakfast, t-shirt sales, Flash Mob, and change collection.

Heart of Missouri United Way achieves levels of quality and fiscal efficiency that other charitable organizations nationally aspire to attain. When you make a pledge to the Heart of Missouri United Way, you can be assured that your contribution will be used wisely to help people in need. Our allocations process

works to ensure that every program we fund is well managed and getting results.

Allocations volunteers determine how to award contributor dollars to agencies to benefit the greatest number of people. Annually, United Way volunteers review each agency in financial, program, and results performance areas, then strategically

invest funding to achieve the best results.

COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort to benefit the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly decided to mail a brand new, age-appropriate book each month to every child under 5 in Sevier County. With the arrival of the first book, the classic “The Little Engine That Could™”, every child can now experience the joy of finding their very own book in the mailbox. These moments continue each month until the child receives “Look Out Kindergarten Here I Come” at the age of five.

Heart of Missouri United Way, through a partnership with Daniel Boone Regional Library, initiated Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program in Columbia in May 2008 and now has more than 2400 babies signed up for the program, over 80% of the babies born in Columbia.

Launched in mid-Missouri in July 2009 by Heart of Missouri United Way, FamilyWize, provides uninsured and underinsured Missourians discounts on prescription medications of all kinds at any pharmacy. Every day people are using FamilyWize cards to save more than $125,000 nationwide and to enable them to get the medicine they would not otherwise have been able to afford. The savings on the cost of the medicine is provided by the more than 65,000 participating local pharmacies that have agreed voluntarily to accept FamilyWize cards and lower the cost of the medicine.

Since it’s launch by Heart of Missouri United Way, the FamilyWize discount card has saved mid-Missourians over $200,000!

2-1-1 is a fast, free and confidential information & referral line available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 2-1-1 call centers operate under national standards and are staffed by trained specialists who quickly assess the callers’ needs and refer them to the help they seek. Information is available on a broad range of services, including food banks, affordable housing, health resources, child care, after-school programs, elderly care, financial literacy, and job training programs.

Missouri 2-1-1 will be entering it’s third year of operation in 2010. Heart of Missouri United Way’s seven county coverage area alone had more than 3,500 calls in the past year with the majority focusing on bill assistance and mortgage relief.

Truly amazing! That’s the best way to describe 2009 from my perspective. With a near daily barrage of bad economic news including job losses, bank and business failures, government budget crises, and climbing home foreclosures, hope and optimism seemed scarce. We all felt the “pinch” in some way.

However, despite unprecedented economic challenges all around us, by year’s end it was quite clear: The Heart of Missouri United Way family decided not to participate in the “bad economy.” You rolled up your sleeves, went to work and helped us exceed our goal by raising more than $3,267,266 to help people in need. Your determination and undaunted optimism proved that faith, hope and action always prevail!

Your compassion in action produced an amazing positive impact in our community:

• 1,224 people provided 25,967 hours of volunteer service valued at more than $525,000• 14 Loaned Executives from 11 companies worked nearly 2,500 hours on our campaign• For the first time in our history, employees at both Shelter Insurance Companies & VA Mortgage Center each raised more than $200,000 in their company campaigns• The University of Missouri employees exceeded their campaign goal by nearly 5% and recruited more than 250 new United Way donors• More people than ever before received the safety net human services they so desperately needed

We’re counting on your partnership in 2010, too. We need your continued help to meet urgentand immediate needs throughout Mid-Missouri.
