The Visitor Center is ready to assist you in finding community services, businesses, and tourists sites in the area! The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce headquarters in the Visitor Center at 200 S Main St. Call 573-729-6900 or e-mail [email protected] . Salem Area Community Betterment Association is also headquartered in the same building. SACBA sponsors a number of community improvement and beautification projects annually.

Natural Resources – A multitude of natural areas are open to the public including Montauk State Park, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Mark Twain National Forest. Fishing, hunting, canoeing, golfing, and hiking provide year-round activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Missouri Department of Conservation manages several areas in the county, Shawnee Mac Lakes, Indian Trail Park, White River Trace and others. Round Springs, Alley Springs, Akers Ferry, and Dillard Mill are noted tourist sites near Salem.

Parades – The Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July Parade and Parade of Lights at Christmas are held annually each year on July 4th and on the first Saturday in December. Fireworks - The City of Salem sponsors a public fireworks display following the Parade. They are free and open to the public. The Commons - a 75-acre property on Hwy 72 W is home to the Dent County Fall Festival. Facilities include an RV Park, youth building, livestock Barn, bandstand, arena, & food stands. Spring Creek Golf Course – a nine-hole course with grass greens and watered fareways, is located on J-Hwy is a private course. It has reasonable green fees and memberships available. 573-729-3080

Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center …. provides information on natural and cultural resources in the area. The facility hosts local displays to exhibits from the Smithsonian Institute. Mark Twain National Forest, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Mo Dept of Conservation and Mo Parks information is on display at the center.

Montauk State Park - Opening day of Trout Season at Montauk State Park attracts over 2,000 anglers Mar 1st. It is 20 miles southwest of Salem, offering camping, fishing, trails, and outdoor fun. The park has a historic mill, lodge restaurant, cabins, and a motel.

Ozark Country Music Held most every Friday night in the Salem City Hall Auditorium (202 N Washington). It features live Ozark music and dancing.

Bonebrake Center located at 601 N Hickory is in the heart of Salem and has a spring, creek, walking trail through natural habitat, an 1880’s Victorian home and a log cabin. Open year round on special events. Rally in the 100 Acre Wood – Rally America sports car rally held the last weekend in February headquarters in Salem. The two-day rally is Friday and Saturday and the Parc Expose’ is in downtown Salem on Saturday morning.

Welcome to Salem, Missouri, located in the heart of the Ozarks in south central Missouri. It is 25 miles southeast of Interstate 44 at the intersections of four state highways: 72, 32, 19 & 68. Salem is twenty miles from the population center of the nation, approximately two hours from St. Louis, Springfield, Columbia and Jefferson City, MO. Salem’s population is nearly 5,000 and the county seat of Dent County, population 15,000. Salem is known for its friendly people and enjoyable community. Blessed with some of the greatest outdoor scenery, beautiful trees, Ozark Mountains, big valleys, open spaces and spring-fed streams; it is one of the most inviting places to be. Population density is lower that the density for most any place in the nation.

Salem is a fourth class city with a Mayor- Alderman form of government. It is the county seat of Dent County and serves as the hub for the entire community. The city does have zoning but there is no zoning in the county. ‘Cost of Living’ is some of the lowest in the nation.

There are four distinct seasons with an average temperature of 75.5 * Fahrenheit in the summer and 34.5 * Fahrenheit in the winter. Elevation is approximately 1,100 feet and the climate is mild with an average rainfall of 42”.

Industries include lead mining, food distribution, wood industries. metal plating and manufacturing. US Food Service is the largest employer. Heartland Metal Finishing, Doe Run Mining and Doe Run Recycling, Small Miracles, Salem Wood Products, Royal Oak Charcoal and Canoak are some of the other larger industries in the area.

New and expanding businesses are welcome. Retail, service, distribution, production, or development are all needed in the area. Buildings are available for industrial purposes. Enhanced Enterprise Zone tax benefits are offered to qualifying businesses. The City of Salem offers electric incentives for new job creation. Free lots are available in the Master’s Industrial Park in exchange for job creation. Land prices are very competitive.

Salem City Parks and Recreation Program The main city park is located on J-Hwy or Rolla Road and is home to lighted tennis courts, volleyball courts, a skateboard park, playground areas, swimming pool, outdoor shelters, picnic areas, and ball fields. Additional parks are located at 1. Hwy 19 N Roadside Park - Pavilion & picnic tables 2. Hickory and Center St. - Park picnic table 3. Carol Midyett Memorial Park (under development) 4. Al Brown Ball Complex, Hwy 32 W & Dilworth Lane To reserve a picnic shelter or the pool call 573-729-6290 or 729-4811. The city recreation program includes summer recreation, soccer, baseball, & basketball. Freedom Activity Center is located on Rolla Road next to the largest City Park. It houses the TCRC, the Wellness, and Fitness Center, a large meeting area/basketball court combination, as well as the Parks and Recreation Director. Walking Trail – Old Frisco Railroad public walking area is a lighted, 8 ft. wide asphalt trail, 4000 feet long starting at Third St. and Grand.

Salem Memorial Hospital - SMDH is a 59 bed Critical Access Hospital located in the heart of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. It serves the residents of the City of Salem, and the counties of Dent, Shannon, Crawford, and Iron. The EMT and Ambulance Services operate from the hospital.

Local Government - Services

City of Salem offices are in the City Administration Building at 400 N Iron St. on the east side of the courthouse square. The City provides electric and water services, and maintains the streets, sidewalks, and sewer system. The Parks and Recreation Program serves the entire county. The city funds a Director of Economic Development and provides resources to help fund the Chamber of Commerce and city beautification programs. 729-4811 Historic Dent County Courthouse

A historic site located on the square houses the county government offices. It was built in 1870. You may tour this beautiful building - Mon through Fri, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. by contacting the County Clerk at 573-729-4144. Additional county services are housed in the Judicial Building on the north side of the square.

Southwest Baptist University, Salem Campus Offers Associate degrees in General Studies and Business and BS degrees in Human Services, and Psychology.

The TCRC provides individuals the opportunity to utilize technological resources for credit and noncredit

Education. The TCRC, a Telecommunications Resource Center, is a partnership of the City of Salem, US Foodservice, Salem R-80 School, The Bank of Salem, Salem Memorial District Hospital, Town and Country Bank and the University of Missouri.
