Oktoberfest Pie Toss a “Hit” at Rotary Booth
The main attraction at the Green Tree Rotary booth at the Green Tree Oktoberfest this year was the Pie Toss. Young and old alike lined up to throw pies at their friends. Rotarian Steve Burkett built the pie toss display and ensured all necessary supplies were on hand. See photos on page 3.
Bingo strip tickets were also sold, as well as tickets for Chinese Auction of five beautifully prepared baskets of highly coveted merchandise. In addition, through the efforts of Brian Rohleder, Don Mosites of Trek Bike Shop of Pittsburgh,
Steve Burkett and Brian Rohleder on Steubenville Pike in Robinson, donated a 21-speed Trek bicycle for raffle.
For most of the week end, the weather was clear, bright and sunny, which attracted a good crowd for the event. The Oktoberfest was not only profitable, but great fun for Rotarians and their guests who worked the booth this year.
New Member Inducted into Green Tree Rotary Club
David Jones was inducted into the Green Tree Rotary Club on November 5. Dave is the owner of Allegra Print and Imaging, a full service commercial printing firm on West Steuben Street in Crafton.

Dave resides in Rosslyn Farms, with his wife, Joy, and children, Gregory, Colin and Caroline.
Annual Pancake Breakfast Another Successful Event Green Tree Rotary’s annual Pancake Breakfast at Wallace Church October 17 was even more successful this year than last. The “kitchen brigade”, pictured at right, consisted of Steve Burkett, Ed Grimes, Marge Tedesco, Dennis Molnar, Brian Rohleder, Dave Wandrisco, Dick Rothrock and Jeff Sterling. The breakfast was well attended by residents of the community, Rotarians from another club, as well as the past and current Mayor of Green Tree, and State Representative Matt Smith and his daughter, Delaney. INTERNATIONAL NEWS [From the Rotary International website]
When the Berlin Wall fell, Rotary was there Adapted from an article by Matthias Schütt Rotary International News -- 12 November 2009
Enthusiasm for Rotary’s role in a soon-to-be reunified Germany was scrawled onto the Berlin Wall before it was dismantled in 1990. Photo courtesy of Rotary Magazin, the regional magazine of Germany and Austria.
On a November 1989 evening, hundreds of Rotarians participating in
an International Institute packed the foyer of the Hilton in West Berlin. They anxiously waited for taxis to take them to a host hospitality event, but none arrived.
Finally, a hotel employee walked to a microphone and made an announcement, as organizer Peter Lorenz, of the Rotary Club of Berlin-Spree, recounts:
“He said, ‘We have to ask for your patience because the taxis we called can’t make it to the hotel. As you will see, thousands of visitors from the eastern part of the city are on the streets, blocking access to the hotel. We have been waiting for these guests for 28 years, and we ask you to wait with us. The [Brandenburg] gate and wall are open.’”
The fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago this month marked the beginning of monumental political changes in Europe, but also the start of a new era in Rotary. The event is largely seen today as the launching pad for the rebirth of Rotary across Eastern Europe.
Interact Officers Keeping in Touch … Interact President Maria Graziano and Vice-President Maddy Burgess, of the Interact Club of Bishop Canevin High School joined Green Tree Rotarians for lunch on Thursday, October 22, to discuss their members’ upcoming participation in the Green Tree Food Drive to be held Saturday, November 14, and to update Rotarians on the various projects and activities of their Interact Club.

Membership Seminar Offers Tips and Techniques
The membership seminar, hosted by Karl Ohrman, District Membership Chair, on October 21 at All-Pak in Bridgeville was interesting and informative. Karl Ohrman took center stage, discussing tried and true methods of attracting and retaining members. The featured speaker was Beth Caldwell, of Beth Caldwell Public Relations, who spoke about public relations strategies and ideas on how to market a club to attract new members. The seminar offered not only food for thought, but a fine selection of sandwiches and sides … and delicious fruit pies from Bob Rupp’s famous Lumpy’s Deli and Pie Shop.
