Lyndsay Mashe continues to take the East TexasBaptist University volleyball program to newheights and 2013 was one of the best for the pro-gram, ever. ETBU played their way to the top ofthe American Southwest Conference a conferenceand program best 32 matches.

Making a run through the ASC Tournament, break-ing three records and forcing the eliminationmatch, Mashe put together one of her best sea-sons at ETBU. ETBU had two eight-match winningstreaks and then went 5-2 in the ASC Tournamentdefeating every team that qualified including theeventual champion.

This past season also brought the program’s first-ev-er AVCA All-American in sophomore Kolby Sharp.ETBU also led the ASC in all-conference selectionswith nine and for the second year in a row she pro-duced the ASC’s “Freshman of the Year” in MallorySanders who was also ASC All-Tournament.

Mashe has led ETBU to two ASC East Division cham-pionships and conference tournament appearanc-es in seven of her eight seasons at her alma mater.In 2012 she fielded her youngest ETBU squad todate, depending heavily on true freshmen andsophomores, and managed to guide the team toanother postseason appearance and second-placefinish in the ASC East. She had seven players earnAll-ASC awards including two first-team selectionsand the ASC East’s Freshman of the Year in KolbySharp.

The Tigers have won 20 or more matches in a sea-son in five of Mashe’s eight seasons at the helm.ETBU made its first ASC Tournament title game ap-pearance in five years in 2008, and the programproduced back-to-back ASC East Player of the Yearhonors in 2007 and 2008, with both awards beingwon by Katie Graves.

Creating excitement among the team’s fans andETBU community has also been a hallmark forMashe’s teams, as the Tigers led the nation inNCAA Division III home attendance average dur-ing the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

After eight seasons, Mashe has an overall recordof 156-101 and became the all-time wins leader atETBU in 2012.

She has continued to build on the success of theprogram she helped generate as a player after shejoined the program as a junior transfer for the 2003season, playing her first two years of college eligi-bility at Panola College in Carthage, Texas.

Mashe earned All-ASC recognition in both her sea-sons with ETBU in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, whenETBU won the last of three straight ASC titles,Mashe was all-conference as a libero/defensivespecialist, and brought home All-ASC honors as theteam’s setter in 2004. She still ranks third all-time atETBU in career assists, with 1,524.

Before joining ETBU, Mashe earned back-to-backall-conference recognition as Panola’s setter. Priorto that she was highly-touted as a high schoolstandout at Pine Tree High School in Longview,Texas, where she earned All-State honors for thetradition-rich Lady Pirates.

After graduating in May of 2005 with a B.S.E.,Mashe took her first head coaching job at Atlanta(TX) High School, where she guided the Lady Rab-bits to a 24-10 record and a playoff run that wenttwo rounds deep in Class 3A.

In her first season in 2006, Mashe guided ETBUto an ASC Eastern Division Championship. It wasETBU’s first division championship in any sportsince 2004 and the volleyball program’s first divi-sion banner since 2002. She has quickly set aboutbuilding a reputation as one of the brightest youngcoaches in the league.

Lyndsay’s husband, Kris, works with her as theteam’s assistant coach and they have one son,Brady.

Kris Mashe Assistant Coach 8th Year

East Texas Baptist University volleyball assistant KrisMashe has been helping his wife Lyndsay for eightyears now. The husband wife combination havebeen consistent winners for the volleyball program

Mashe joined the ETBU staff shortly after Lyndsaywas named head coach in February 2006. ETBUwon the programs first American Southwest Con-ference East Division championship since 2002 inhis first season on staff, winning 19 of their final 25games and going 15-2 in conference play.

His main focus is with the offense, primarily work-ing with hitters and blockers. He has coached sev-eral all conference hitters during his tenure.

He also plays a major role in recruiting and hashelped the program bring in several players thathave earned various honors including three ASC“Freshman of the Year” awards and multiple all-conference selections. In the last two years, 2012 &2013, he has helped bring in two of the program’stop recruiting classes with talent from some of thetop club programs in the state from clubs such asTAV, Austin Juniors, and AVA among others.

A native of Longview, Texas, Mashe attended theUniversity of North Texas. He has played both out-door and indoor volleyball for over 15 years andhas coached with East Texas Juniors VolleyballClub for 10 years while also serving as a member ofthe clubs board of directors. He is married to Lynd-say and they have one son, Brady.

32 Program Wins – New RecordThis season proved to be one of the best seasons,ever, in the history of the program as ETBU won arecord 32 matches. They defeated Schreiner Univer-sity, 3-0, on November 2nd for the 27th win to breakthe record. ETBU went on to win fi ve more matcheswinning fi ve of their next six matches for 32 wins. In2013, they also recorded 17 sweeps in 32 wins. Theold record of 26 was set in 2003, a team that headcoach Lyndsay Mashe played on.

ASC TournamentThe 2013 American Southwest Conference tourna-ment ended up being a very exciting one for ETBU.ETBU, who was the #3 seed overall, set three newASC records in the tournament, defeated all fi veteams in the tournament, and played for the champi-onship. ETBU is the fi rst team to defeat the winner’sbracket team and force the elimination match play-ing three matches in one day. ETBU fell to Hardin-Simmons, 3-1, but had the Cowgirls on the edges ofelimination in set four. ETBU was up 24-21 in setfour but ran out of steam as Hardin-Simmons scoredthe next fi ve points for the 26-24 match win.

ETBU opened the tournament with a 3-1 win overConcordia-Texas before falling to #2 seed Mary Har-din-Baylor, 3-1. On Friday, ETBU bounced back witha 3-0 victory over Texas-Tyler and then eliminated #1seed and host Texas-Dallas, 3-1. Saturday broughtthree matches as ETBU took a 3-1 win over MaryHardin-Baylor and then upset Hardin-Simmons, 3-1,before falling in the elimination match.

Mallory Sanders and Kolby Sharp were named to theall-tournament team and ETBU broke tournament re-cords for matches played (7), sets played (27), andwins (5). They also tied the ASC record for wins ina season at 32.

AVCA All-AmericanKolby Sharp became program’s fi rst-ever All-Amer-ican when she was named to the AVCA honorablemention team. She received the award after beingvoted onto the AVCA All-Region fi rst team as a soph-omore. For the season, she fi nished fi fth in hittingpercentage in the NCAA and led the ASC. This washer seventh award this year as she started the beingvoted the ASC’s Preseason Defensive Player of theYear. Her awards are below:

ASC AwardsBeing one of the top ASC teams in 2013, ETBU hadnine players awarded post-season awards. For thesecond year in a row, ETBU had the ASC Fresh-man of the Year in Mallory Sanders. Kolby Sharpand Adaeze Elonu were named to the fi rst-team asit was the second year in a row for Sharp to be onthe fi rst-team. Sanders made the second-team afterbeing named the freshman of the year and then Han-nah Jones and Kayla Taylor were on the third team.Melanie Moyer, Nicole Buzzard, Kassie Freitag, andMadelynn Kinsel all were named honorable mention.It was the fi rst award for freshmen Sanders, Buzzard,and Kinsel.

Single Season Record/Top 5In just her second year on the team, junior AdaezeElonu broke the single season record for blocks with166. The old record of 135 was set in 1999 by AmyCarlson. Kolby Sharp also broke the record but camein second this year with 157 blocks behind Elonu.

Freshman Mallory Sanders made the 50-ace clubwith 64 aces for third place. She just slipped pastAllison Castillo’s 60 from 2001 and was 12 away fromArden Tunnell’s 76 from 2002.

Hannah Jones fi nished the season with 635 digs tobecome a member of the 500 dig club. Her 635 digsis fi fth best in a season and is just 115 less than thesingle season record of 750 set by Jill Boyd in 2007.

Career Top 10Several players have moved up on the top 10 listthis past season with blocks record in contention tobe broken in 2014. Adaeze Elonu has 271 careerblocks which is third all-time. The record is held byCasey Hugman (2001-04) with 365. Kolby Sharp isfi fth all-time with 260 blocks and is contention of alsobreaking the record.

When it comes to career kills, three players are cur-rently in the top 10. Kassie Freitag, Ashley Lindsey,and Kolby Sharp. Kassie is eighth with 741 followedby Lindsey in ninth with 676 and Sharp in 10th at 657.The career record is 2,015 set by Arden Tunnell setfrom 2002-05.

Hannah Jones and Melanie Moyer are in the top 10for digs. Jones has 1,067 digs for sixth place andhas a chance to move up to second place in 2014as Robin Cook has 1,524 digs. Moyer is in eighthplace with 1,037.

Two players have made their name in assists inKayla Taylor and Nicole Buzzard. Taylor, who hasplayed for three years as a setter, has 2,281 assistsfor third place. She will most likely fi nish third all-timeas Allison Castillo has 4,356 assists in second place.Buzzard, a freshman, fi nished with 694 kills.

Winning StreaksETBU reeled off two eight-match winning streaks in2013. After starting the season off 1-3, ETBU woneight straight going undefeated at the UT-Tyler Tour-nament (Sept. 6-7) and the Rhodes College Tourna-ment (Sept. 13-14). Of those eight matches, four ofthem were swept, 3-0. The second eight-matchwinning streak came from September 24 throughOctober 5th. It started with a 3-0 win over Cente-nary and then three more wins at the ASC Pod inLongview, Texas, over Mississippi College, LeTour-neau University, and Texas-Tyler. They then trav-eled to Shreveport, La., for their second win overCentenary in a week followed by going undefeatedin Ornelas Gym. Hosting the ASC Pod, ETBU sweptSul Ross State and Concordia-Texas and then gaveMary Hardin-Baylor their fi rst ASC loss of the year,3-2, to end the winning streak.

Double DoublesFive different players recorded double-doubles thisyear for ETBU. Kayla Taylor lead the way with 12double-doubles followed by Melanie Moyer who had10. Mallory Sanders added nine double-doubles andNicole Buzzard had seven. Kassie Freitag addedtwo double-doubles
