LETTER TO THE COMMUNITYDear Friends,

Last year was a remarkable year in many aspects. Not only did the economy significantly affect all of our lives or those around

us, it brought an incredible outpouring of generosity. It was also an exciting, productive and gratifying year at Goodwill as

we helped over 5,550 individuals faced with homelessness, disadvantaging challenges and disabilities to move toward or

maintain their self-sufficiency.

We responded to the increasing demand for our services by doing what we do best – strengthening and expanding our

services, building opportunities, and growing our collaborations. These achievements were made possible because of the

strength of the Goodwill staff, their deep commitment to our mission and those we serve and the investment of our supporters.

During the year, we opened our Petoskey retail and donation center, began production and created 18 jobs at Paperworks

Studio, welcomed three AmeriCorps volunteers who have helped us to expand our volunteer base, our reach into the

community and been invaluable to program development, and are pleased to have Food Rescue join Goodwill programs.

As we reflect on the past year it was a privilege to play a role in helping individuals overcome their challenges. As we look to

the future, we will continue to build strong programs and resources to serve those who need us, embrace change and remain

steadfast to our mission.

Glenda Thomasons’ childhood innocence was short lived. A rough childhood and emancipation from her family by the age of 13

all triggered Glenda’s escape to drug and alcohol abuse and crime. Ultimately it led to five years in a correctional facility and over

time, eleven felony convictions.

This beautiful, caring mom says, “Throughout my incarceration and years of substance abuse, I never received treatment until

2008. I started life all over at a transitional house after I completed the program, moved to an apartment and after the loss of

a roommate and with no job, I turned to the Goodwill Inn. I am very grateful for higher powers for showing me humility and

bringing me to the Inn. It was a very humbling experience.”

“I have been given so much. I used to be a liar and dishonest. I have learned to accept life on life’s terms without altering my

feeling or emotions. I didn’t know how to be a mom or to hold a job. Today I have my beautiful son, Payton, my fifteen-year-old

daughter in my life, a new apartment, a car, a job I love at J&S Hamburg, a clean and sober life, a sponsor and wonderful people

who I can turn to.

GlendaGLENDA

“I have been blessed and am grateful to the Inn and those who believed in me. I cannot turn back time, but I have no ghosts to haunt me, as I continue to move forward.”

You give me hope

Street Outreach actively locates and engages chronically

homeless adults and families within the Grand Traverse

area, providing emergency assistance and/or referrals to

community support services.

Street Outreach workers and volunteers provide food,

clothing, transportation assistance, and emotional aid so

that the well-being of the homeless is immediately

addressed. The program brings services to those who

do not or cannot access traditional services.

Street Outreach works to identify and reduce barriers to

care and to increase the use of all available services

through partnerships with area programs servicing the

homeless, such as Community Meals and Safe Harbor.

Five years ago, an afternoon of snowboarding changed Jacob’s life forever.

A serious wipeout resulted in a three-week-long coma and major surgery

for Jacob.

“I walked away with four plates in my head, a new part in my hair, a disc

missing in my back and no short term memory,” Jacob recalls. “Like many,

I used to live life a bit on auto-pilot. Today it is a Palm Pilot that directs

my days.”

It has not been an easy road for an All-American guy who was very active

and worked in accounting. “After the accident I lived in my car for a year

and a half…the Whiting…a shared house and now with the help of Housing

Support Services I have my own place. They help provide answers, facilitate

for me, alleviate stress, frustration and provide support so that I can live

independently.

“I was fortunate to have had the support of Housing Support Services, Goodwill’s Social Security Disability Insurance Appeals

Program, Michigan Rehabilitation Services, and Foundation for Mental Health housing. I am grateful for everything I have gotten

out of the accident. I am not angry. I have a positive outlook and want to continue moving forward.

“I want to enjoy the gift I was

given...a second chance.”

Goodwill’s Housing Support Services program staff builds

goal-oriented relationships with homeless, precariously

housed and special needs individuals and families.

Professional assistance is provided in housing location services,

planning, problem solving and referral services, all with the goal

of each program participant locating, securing and maintaining

permanent housing. Program staff actively counsel on the rights

and responsibilities of independent living, and coordinate aid

through a variety of service models including in-home support

so that program participants’ independent living needs are met

and maintained.

Housing Support Services are provided to individuals and

families including Goodwill guests and former guests, as well

as recipients in housing programs such as Michigan Prison

ReEntry Initiative, Foundation for Mental Health, Housing First

and other emergency housing programs.

The eyes and smile on Christy Ford’s face light up the room when you

meet her at Paperworks Studio. The message she sends is loud and

clear…she is happy!

In 1998, life for Christy changed in an instant. A stroke robbed her of

her voice and her ability to communicate even the smallest things. She

labored to regain some of her words with assistance from Michigan

Rehabilitation services, speech therapy, sign language and aid of a

DynaVox speech device. Over the years the loss of her voice and inability

to communicate led her through some destructive paths on her personal

journey to find a place where she feels safe and productive.

Today Christy has found that safe, comfortable place at Paperworks

Studio. When asked what is the most frustrating thing about losing her

voice, Christy’s clenched hands speak for her, saying, “I can’t say.”

You can instantly feel the exasperation as the words that are so clear in

her mind cannot be communicated. A moment later her eyes glisten

with tears of joy as she says “I love it here, I like everyone. I have some

independence, I am proud of what I do and I am happy.”

Food Services prepare meals for Meals on Wheels in

partnership with Northwest Michigan Community Action

Agency, as well as meals for Inn guests.

We realize that a lack of nutrition results in susceptibility to

illness, longer term health risks, low self-esteem, and lack

of sleep, stress and low energy levels. The Meals on Wheels

program helps to address nutritional needs for seniors and

shut-ins. Our Food Services also prepares meals for Goodwill

Inn guests. With the cycle of poverty and homelessness,

eating right is not always an option when eating at all is

sometimes challenging. Yet nutrition is one of the most

important resources we have to maintain all levels of a

healthy life. TOTAL MEALS PREPARED 164,802

Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental

Income Appeals Services are designed to evaluate, plan

and assist with the appeals process after an initial claim

has been denied.

Our SSDI/SSI professional staff applies their expertise with

social security rules and regulations toward the goal of

obtaining a favorable outcome to SSDI/SSI appeal claims.

Workers on Wheels drives home hope for low income,

working families with every vehicle donated.

Through the generosity of vehicle donations, families are

empowered to improve their employment opportunities,

better care for their children, participate in school and

community activities and gain access to other services, thus

empowering them toward self-sufficiency and improving

their quality of life. LIVES TOUCHED 171

We all have days when we would rather stay in bed than go

to work. For Dianna Thornburg, 44, she would do anything

to be pain free, active and working. In January 2007, after

five years of undiagnosed excruciating pain she was forced to

quit working after 26 years in the culinary profession.

Dianna says, “I didn’t just give up my job. I gave up my

self-worth…my livelihood…my ability to contribute to my

household. There is no major event to pinpoint the cause of

the degenerative and bulging discs in my back and neck.

It’s hard for people to understand my situation. They don’t

see a disabled person, they don’t see the chronic pain and

medication I take just to function.

“In January 2007, I applied and was denied Social Security

Disability Income. I contacted an attorney and was told over

the phone they did not think I had an appeal. During a visit

to Michigan Works, I learned about Goodwill’s SSDI/SSI

appeals program. In November 2007, SSDI staff Mr. Gills

and Mr. Merriman began my appeal. Over the next 25

months, they did an excellent job; providing assistance,

answering questions, advocating for me, helping with

legalities and attending my hearing. In December of 2009,

I was awarded my appeal. I am grateful for the award but

would give anything to be able to work today.”

Community Support Services works to fill gaps in services by

providing critical basic needs to community members. These

services include food baskets, clothing and household goods

vouchers, temporary housing assistance, transportation,

housing resource information, financial and educational

assistance, information and referrals, and the Goodwill

Holiday Needs program. During the year 7,872 services

were provided to 3,392 individuals.

Goodwill provided $112,887 in resources through the

distribution of retail store vouchers to individuals in

programs, community members and area partner agencies

to assist them with clothing and household goods, as well

as GAP (Goodwill Assistance Program) Assistance for a

wide variety of critical needs, such as the purchase of birth

certificates, emergency medical needs, car repairs, etc.

Goodwill is also a supporting partner of the Otsego

Community Meals.

Have you ever looked around a grocery store and thought

to yourself, “What do they do with all the perishable or

dated food they don’t sell?” All too often the answer had

been – sadly – throw it away. Food Rescue is part of

northwest Michigan’s solution to the problems of hunger

and food waste.

Food Rescue is a mobile food rescue program that began as

a pilot program in October 2008. Refrigerated trucks pick up

donated food from local stores and other fresh food donors

in Grand Traverse, Benzie and Leelanau counties. The method is simple: rescue fresh, perishable and prepared foods and

beverages and deliver it the same day to area food pantries and food distribution sites at no cost. That simple method resulted

in putting 193,533 lbs of good food to good use in 2009. These perishable foods add a significant amount of nutritional value to

the meals of individuals and families who turn to a food pantry for assistance.

The Food Rescue advisory board committee strategically steers and directs Food Rescue as it continues to expand into new

counties and positively impact the fight against hunger by putting good food to good use.

The Goodwill retail stores and donation centers contribute to the financial support of Goodwill programs and services through

the sale of gently used merchandise, as well as provide employment and training opportunities for those with barriers.

Every time you donate or shop at Goodwill you re-use and

recycle items as well as re-new hope and the chance for

independence through a Goodwill program.

Goodwill is proud to operate an environmentally and socially

responsible retail program.

Retail Operations provided 58.79 % of the agencies’ funding.

Last year over 142,000 donations were made at Goodwill

stores and donation centers.

Over 440,000 purchases were made at our Goodwill stores.

Our salvage and recycling program recycled 3,352,103 lbs of

textiles, shoes, computers, paper, metal and cardboard last year.
