A longtime hallmark of Fighting Sioux athletics has been academic excellence . UND established its academic reputation with 65 all-time Academic All-Americans at the Division II level, fourth-most among DII schools .

With that foundation to build upon, UND’s student-athletes enjoyed arguably their finest year in the classroom in 2008-09, earning a school-record six Academic All-America honors and a pair of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships: Former offensive lineman Mitch Braegelmann earned consecutive Academic All-America first

team honors in 2007 and 2008.

“I loved everything about UND and being a student-athlete there. I look back on those times as some of the best in my life. I learned so much, not only as an athlete, but also as a person.”

— UND Hall of Fame runner Marie (Crep) Suchy (‘94)

Each sport might have its own traditions, but one thing stands true

through all of North Dakota athletics, and that is the dedication

and commitment of Fighting Sioux student-athletes.

mISSIONIt is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and student-athlete reach their full athletic potential .

PHILOSOPHYWe believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete . The philosophy of our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the

playing surface . We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism . We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program .

At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program . The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams . The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete . The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free .

Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities . Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him .

Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 student-athletes in 20 sports at UND . UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around . The facilities include the Ralph Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and the Hyslop Sports Center weight room .

Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year . Student-athletes follow either off-season or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport . Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included .

Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them . In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff .

The Fighting Sioux volleyball program trains at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center’s Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 2005-06 season .

One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur . However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training .

With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation .

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990 . Additionally, the bachelor

of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded . The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences .

UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training . Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the student-athlete . Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC) .

The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action .

In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2 .75 .

The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries . UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries . Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues . The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes .

Brian Faison begins his second year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota . Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008 .

Faison’s first year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics through its first year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all of its sports programs . He secured conference membership for 16 of UND’s 18 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the athletics department and enhanced UND’s statewide profile through community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux Sports Network .

North Dakota student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: 12 student-athletes were named academic all-district and a school-record six were named Academic All-Americans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA postgraduate scholarships and 80 student-athletes received academic all-conference honors .

Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the Fighting Sioux Club set a record; football had the largest opening day crowed in the history of the program and set a single-season attendance record; women’s hockey finished seventh in the nation in average attendance; and men’s hockey finished second in the nation in average attendance .

Competitively, North Dakota teams also enjoyed outstanding seasons: Men’s hockey won the MacNaughton Cup, its league-leading WCHA championship; women’s basketball went undefeated at home on its way to an 18-win season; men’s basketball had its first winning season in three years and volleyball went from a record of 6-23 the previous year to 24-8 last season .

Prior to joining UND, Faison served as assistant vice president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University . Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999) . Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984) . He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (1978-1979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978) .

Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute .

Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley .

The 2009 cross country season was high-lighted by a strong showing at the second an-nual Great West Conference Championship in the Bronx, New York, where the Fighting Sioux finished third and placed a pair of runners on the all-conference team . Senior Brittany Brenny (Staples, Minn .) earned Great West Conference runner-up hon-ors with a time of 22:30 .99 and was named to her second straight All-Great West Conference first team . Brenny (pictured above) was also an all-first team selection as a junior in 2008 when she placed fourth .

Brenny’s teammate, sophomore Katherine Enabnit (Carmichael, Calif .) earned All-Great West Conference second team accolades after placing 10th with a time of 23:41 .78 .

Paced by the performances of Brenny and Enabnit (far right), as well as a 17th-place showing by senior Kristi Dahlheimer (Anoka, Minn .), the Fighting Sioux recorded a team score of 89 to trail only conference champion Utah Valley and runner-up South Dakota .

Senior Lori Benke (Jamestown, N .D .), sopho-mores Emily Emerson (Lino Lakes, Minn .), An-gela Kumm (Hutchinson, Minn .) and meghan Enabnit (Carmichael, Calif .) and freshman Anna Lipetzky (Moorhead, Minn .) also com-peted in the conference meet, which was hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technol-ogy at Van Cortland Park .

Brenny was the catalyst for the Sioux through-out the season, clocking in as UND’s top run-ner in four of her five meets leading up to the conference championship .

The Staples, Minn ., native opened the sea-son in fine fashion, taking medalist honors at UND’s annual Ron Pynn Classic (Sept . 5) for the second straight season . Brenny charted the 5K course in 18:10 .07, a blazing 33 sec-onds faster than the meet runner-up .

Brenny and her teammates followed up with a fine showing two weeks later at the Univer-sity of Nebraska’s Woody Greeno Invite (Sept . 19) . The Sioux finished in fourth place, with Brenny, Emerson, Katherine Enabnit and Kris-ti Dahlheimer all cracking the top 25 in the 266-runner meet .

After a sixth-place showing at the South Da-kota State Classic (Oct . 3), the Fighting Sioux once again headed south on I-29, this time to Vermillion, S .D ., for the USD Tim Young Open . Katherine Enabnit enjoyed her finest perfor-mance as a collegian, leading the Sioux with a fourth-place finish and a time of 19:17 .90 . Emerson also landed in the top 10, placing seventh .

Following a week off, UND’s final pre-Great West Conference tune-up came at the 21st annual Chile Pepper Festival (Oct . 17), hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville .

The Sioux acquitted themselves very well, placing 17th in the 34-team standings . Brenny placed 30th among 267 runners, set-ting the stage for her runner-up showing two weeks later at the Great West Conference Championship .

Brenny was twice named Great West Confer-ence Runner of the Week, first following her runner-up showing at the Ron Pynn Classic, then again after the Chile Pepper Festival where she recorded the conference’s third-fastest 6K time all season .

Brenny was named UND’s Most Valuable Run-ner while Katherine Enabnit was selected as the team’s most improved runner .

Two-time All-Great West Conference first team selection Brittany Brenny was the Great West Conference runner-up in 2009.

Sophomore Katherine Enabnit placed 10th at the Great West Conference Championship to earn all-conference second team honors.

Six seniors will lead the Fighting Sioux track team into the 2009-10 season, including Kristi Dahlheimer (Anoka, Minn .), the 2009 Great West Conference champion in the steeple-chase, and Brittany Brenny (Staples, Minn .), undoubtedly one of the top distance runners in the conference .

With a veteran roster that has already expe-rienced success at the Division I level, North Dakota enters its second season of transition ready to make plenty of noise in the Great West Conference .

JUmPS/HURDLESSeniors Karen Carpenter (Grand Forks), Kate LaRoche (Faribault, Minn .), Kayla Pfau (Mi-not, N .D .) and juniors Jessica Butler (Grand Rapids, Minn .) and Sarah Fegley (Berthhold, N .D .) lead a battle-tested group .

Fegley and LaRoche both earned runner-up honors at the 2009 GWC Indoor champion-ship; Fegley n the triple jump and LaRoche in the pole vault .

Butler nabbed a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at the GWC Outdoor Championship and Carpenter enjoyed two top-10 showings at the indoor championship . Both are dual threats in sprints and hurdles .

Pfau, UND’s co-recipient of the team’s Most Improved award, cracked the top four in the pole vault at both the GWC Indoor and Out-door Championships .

Junior Rachael Fashant (Eagan, Minn .) and sophomore mikaela Hirst (Bismarck, N .D .) also return, and senior transfer Aryn Bell (Eden Prairie, Minn .) will join the fold this year .

Sophomore sprinter Cheri Boyer (Barney, N .D .) will be joined by incoming freshmen Paige Kuplic (Savage, Minn .) and Brittany Zander (Mandan, N .D .)

A pair of talented freshmen, megan grey (St . Cloud, Minn .) and Kirsten Haas (Belgrade, Mont .), will push the returning letterwinners in sprints and hurdles .

DISTANCEBrenny, Emily Emerson (So ., Lino Lakes, Minn .) and Katherine Enabnit (So ., Carmichael, Ca-lif .) highlight UND’s distance returnees .

Brenny, coming off a runner-up showing at the 2009 GWC Cross Country Championship, earned top-four conference finishes last year in the 5,000 (indoor and outdoor) and 10,000 meter runs . She also took first place in the 3,000 meters at the USC Trojan Invite .

Like Brenny, Enabnit is coming off of an all-conference cross country season and hopes to carry that momentum into the track cam-paign .

Emerson was the runner-up in the 1,500-me-ter run at last year’s GWC Outdoor Champion-ship .

Senior Lori Benke (Jamestown, N .D .), sopho-mores meghan Enabnit (Carmichael, Calif .) Angela Kumm (Hutchinson, Minn .) also pro-vide key experience .

Freshmen Taryn Anderson (Remer, Minn .), Anna Lipetzky (Moorhead, Minn .) and Chris-tine mcIntyre (Eagan, Minn .) will also figure into the equation .

THROWSRare is the sophomore who earns the distinc-tion of team captain at the collegiate level . However, Brooke Biederstedt (Dickinson, N .D .) was named co-captain after a standout freshman season that saw her crack the top-10 in the Great West Conference in both the shot put and the weight throw .

Biederstedt is joined by fellow sophomore Sa-mantha Underhill (Brainerd, Minn .), who also acquitted herself well at the GWC Indoor and Outdoor Championships last year .

Other throwers on UND’s 2010 roster will include freshmen megan Storstad (Grand Forks) and Kelsey Thompson (Cavalier, N .D .) .

Senior Kristi Dahlheimer returns to defend her Great West Conference title in the steeplechase.

GrEAT WEST CONFErENCE

The Great West Conference is made up of 10 intercollegiate in-stitutions that range geographi-cally from New Jersey to Texas to California . The 10 member schools are spread out over seven states and four time zones, giv-ing each school added exposure - both in terms of media and re-cruiting - in new destinations .The conference affiliation also generates much interest within the 10 institutions’ substantial alumni base .

The conference, which began as a football-only league, took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world when the conference expanded to include several addi-tional sports and several new members .

Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University . Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October, 2008 . These seven schools joined football only members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah University to make up the 10-member league .

In addition to football, championships conducted during the 2008-09 academic year were men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf . Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball begin league play in 2009-10 .

As the conference began planning for multi-team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field . Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions . The associate members, plus NJIT, make up the Eastern Division, while North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley play in the West . Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight play-ing members . Seattle University was added as an associate member in cross country and track and field in 2009 .

Officially announced Feb . 25, 2004, charter members of the Great West Football Conference were California Polytechnic State University; Uni-versity of California, Davis; North Dakota State University; University of Northern Colorado; South Dakota State University; and Southern Utah University . Conference competition began on Sept . 4, 2004 with UC Davis scoring a 52-0 win over South Dakota State and Northern Colorado notching a 15-13 win over North Dakota State .

The Great West continues its proud tradition in football and has been rated as one of the best in Football Championship Subdivision and ahead of Football Bowl Subdivision leagues such as the Mid-American Conference and the Sun Belt .

The Great West Conference recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis . Individual awards include players of the week; all-conference teams; an academic all-conference team; and player, newcomer and coach of the year awards . The league also crowns team champions for both regular season and post-season competition .

The governance of the Great West Conference remains primarily with the member institutions . Each member institution is represented on the President’s Council by its respective CEO . The general opera-tions and management of the Conference will be conducted by the directors of athletics and senior woman administrators (Joint Council) . Scheduling of contests, assignment of officials and certain media rela-tions functions remain with member institutions .

UND president Dr. Robert Kelley (left) and director of athletics Brian Faison announced UND’s membership into the Great West Conference in July of 2008.

mELANIE CARVELL (RIXEN)1980-83

Melanie Carvell (Rixen) be-gan her collegiate career at the University of North Dakota as a freshman in 1979 . She chose to attend UND for its academics and the physical therapy pro-gram . Carvell competed as a member of the Fight-

ing Sioux cross country and track teams from 1980-83 . After a year working in Edinburgh, Scotland, following graduation, Carvell’s professional career as a physical therapist brought her back home to North Dakota where, for the past 25 years, she has worked at Medcen-ter One in Bismarck . For the past 15 years she has directed Medcenter One’s Women’s Health Center, an outpatient physical therapy clinic that is combined with a women’s fitness center .

The job is a perfect fit for the former Sioux who says she was “not a standout athlete dur-ing my years at UND” . There are those who may differ with her self-assessment, especial-ly considering her post collegiate athletic ca-reer . Carvell continued to run and competed in several marathons after graduation .

“I also took up cycling and swimming and started doing triathlons .,” Carvell says . There may be no greater understatement .

Carvell’s post-collegiate athletic career has taken her to Switzerland, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Canada as a Team USA member of nine World Triathlon and Du-athlon championship races .

She is a four-time Team USA Triathlon All-American, a Duathlon World Championship bronze medalist, and an Olympic Trials 40K time trial cyclist . She has also been named North Dakota’s Sportscasters/Sportswriters Athlete of the Year and North Dakota’s Prairie Rose Athlete of the Year .

Carvell’s passion for competition and fitness are tied closely with her professional career where she has also received the “Picture of Health” award for being top leader in the State of North Dakota in Women’s Health .

Carvell says she “loves being a physical thera-pist” and has had several great opportunities to work in pediatrics, home health and rehab, cardiac disease prevention and women’s health, as well as corporate wellness and fit-ness programming . Carvell is also a motiva-tional speaker on health and fitness issues .

With three grown children, Carvell and her husband, Charles, a 1979 UND law school graduate who works in the North Dakota At-torney General’s office, also have an active family life .

Daughter Kelsey recently graduated from Iowa State with a master’s degree in electri-cal engineering . Son Robert is in his first year of residency in Orthotics and Prosthetics in Great Falls, Mont ., and son Elliot is a sopho-more at the University of North Dakota . The family stays active with cycling, running, swimming, skiing and snowboarding .

When asked how her experiences as a UND student-athlete become applicable to her life after leaving UND, Carvell said:

“Besides the balance needed for a good, happy life, I developed a love of running and found that it provided me with a release from the stresses of professional life and parent-ing, and actually gave me extra energy . I also learned how important being a mentor to others can be and have strived to help others get involved in physical activities to develop better lifestyles .”

Some of Carvell’s fondest memories of UND are as a student-athlete .

“I loved being a part of the team, and the balance that being a student-athlete provided to my overall col-lege experience . The physi-cal therapy program was very demanding but gave me a top-notch education . Having the daily stress relief that athletics and running provided really made my college years healthier and happier .”

“(Then-women’s cross coun-try coach) Mike Grandall was a wonderful coach and mentor who provided sup-port during my years on the track and cross country team . Jeanne (Likar) Dekrey (’83) was also a great men-tor who took the time to be supportive of all her team-mates . We had some great athletes and good perfor-mances, but mostly I re-member the friendships and the support of the teams during those college years .”

Carvell believes that being a student-athlete has been

of great significance in her life . According to Carvell, being a student-athlete not only helped lead towards a healthier lifestyle but was a means of connecting with the campus community and developing pride in oneself and the school .

Carvell says that being a student-athlete pays off down the road .

“My career today would not have developed as it is without my background in competi-tive athletics as well as my formal education in physical therapy .”

Carvell continues to stay in contact with her former teammates . Three of those team-mates live in Bismarck and have been lifelong friends . They still see one another and run, cross country ski and cycle together .

As far as advice to current UND student-ath-letes Carvell says, “Enjoy your sport . Enjoy your teammates . Savor this time of relative freedom . Have fun and love what you do and better results will follow . Be good to others .

“Awards, accomplishments and statistics will fade quickly and are largely forgotten in time, but people will always remember if you took time to be a mentor and to help others .”

Carvell is a four-time Team USA Triathlon All-American and a Duathlon World Championship bronze medalist.
