DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN: Junior guard Zach Urbanus set a career-high for most consecutive 20-point contests, scoring 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, to lead The Cita-del to 68-43 victory over Georgia Southern. Teammate Cameron Wells, who faced constant defensive pressure throughout the afternoon, tallied 14 points. Austin Dahn rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points. The Bulldogs defense forced 20 Eagle turnovers and limited GSU to 13 made fi eld goals. The victory improves their record to 6-4 overall, 1-1 in Southern Conference play. Urbanus, who scored 23 points respectively against Davidson and Central Connecticut State, led all scorers by virtue of hitting 5-for-7 from 3-point range. He was joined by Cosmo Morabbi (2-4), Wells (1-2) and Dahn (2-5) to combine for 10-of-22 shooting (45.5%) from

beyond the arc. Bryan Streeter, who was not in the starting lineup, provided a force in the paint with six points and a team-high six rebounds for the Bulldogs. The Citadel convert-ed 22-of-55 attempts (40%) from the fi eld and added 14-of-22 from the free-throw line (63.6%). As for Georgia Southern, who in the midst of a three-game losing streak to the Bulldogs, they were led by Ben Drayton and Willie Powers with 10 points apiece. Johntavious Rucker added eight point on 4-of-6 shooting, leading the Eagles with highest number of made bas-kets. Tyler Troupe grabbed nine boards, six on the defensive glass, to lead both squads. Urbanus sparked the Bulldogs lineup midway through the fi rst half of play when he con-verted a pass from Cameron Wells at the 11:35 mark to close the defi cit to 11-9 in favor of GSU. From there the Bulldogs would fi nish out the half on a 24-9 run behind 12 points from Urbanus. The Citadel held a 33-20 edge at the break. The second half of action was much of the same as the Bulldogs outscored Georgia Southern 20-5 over a 6:43 span that was capped off by a Morabbi 3-pointer. With 6:21 re-maining the contest, and Wells at the line, the junior point guard stretched the advantage to 30, 64-34, marking a game-high.

INSIDE THE TOP 20: Cameron Wells extended his streak of double-digit scoring games to 14 straight, which dates back to a meeting with Wofford (2/28/09), and in the process moved into 18th place on The Citadel all-time scoring list. His 14-point outing against Geor-gia Southern moved him past Alan Puckett (1,112) and Craig Bardo (1,119). Cameron, who entered the season with 946 career points in 63 contests, has scored 174 points this to this point. Here is a brief look at the company Wells is keeping among leading scorers in

SHOOTERS TOUCH: Zach Urbanus entered the 2009-10 campaign at seventh place on the all-time list of Bulldog 3-point shooters, with 148 total. By virtue of connecting on 148-of-335 attempts, Urbanus trails only Leon Bryant (46.3%) in 3-Point FG Percentage Leaders. Along with teammate Austin Dahn, who sits in eighth for his career, the tandem is making their way up the list of prolifi c outside shooters. Urbanus hit his stride of late, connecting on 35 three-point attempts this season, 30 have come over the course of the last eight contests. Urbanus is locked in a zone in which he has hit 44.1% (30-68) during that span. As for Dahn, who has knocked down seven from beyond the arc, the Hispanic College Fund Challenge was his breakthrough. BEYOND THE BOXSCORE: As Bulldogs head coach Ed Conroy perfects his rotation for a consistent lineup, the recent play of reserves Matt Clark and Cosmo Morabbi have proved valuable. Morabbi has logged 81 minutes, including 33 against Davidson on Thursday, over the course of the last three games including one start. Against CCSU he fi nished with 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc and 12 points, both tying career bests. Morabbi burned the Eagles defense for a six points beyond the arc. Clark, who moved into the starting lineup, pulled down four rebounds in 16 minutes against Georgia Southern. In 29 minutes of play against CCSU he scored fi ve points, on 2-of-4 shooting from the fi eld, along with six boards (fi ve offensive). He followed that performance with seven boards (six defensive) in the Southern Conference opener against Davidson.

MVP PERFORMANCE: Guard Cameron Wells took away MVP honors in the CollegeInsider.com Skip Prosser Invitational over the weekend. Teammates Joe Wolfi nger and Zach Urba-nus joined Wells on the All-Tournament team. Wells completed the two-day event by scor-ing 24 points on 15-of-32 FGs (46.9%), 4-4 from the charity stripe, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Urbanus streaked to a 9-for-22 (40.9%) shooting performance, including 8-18 from beyond the arc. He managed 28 points and eight boards against UVA-Wise and Central Connecticut State. As for Wolfi nger, a cog in the paint for the Bulldogs, the graduate senior notched 23 points with 7-for-14 (50%) outing, knocked down 8-of-12 free throws (66.7%) and grabbed 11 rebounds.

TWO GARNER ALL-TOURNAMENT AWARDS: Bulldogs guard Cameron Wells and center Joe Wolfi nger were named to the Hispanic College Fund Challenge All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the three-day even on Sunday. Wolfi nger fi nished 17-for-26 from the

fi eld, including 9-of-12 from the 3-point line, and anchored the paint for The Citadel with 22 boards. He totaled 49 points and led the team with 18 points in the loss to Missouri State. Meanwhile, Wells scored 50 points and dished out 17 assists, moving into The Citadel lists of all-time 1,000 point scorers. Wells shined in a victory over Eastern Michigan, hitting 7-of-18 shots and 10-for-12 from the charity stripe en route to 24 points.

WELLS DRAWS ACCOLADES FROM THREE: The Citadel’s Cameron Wells was named to the CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major All-America team, marking the third such honor in 2009-10 that was bestowed on the junior point guard. Wells fi nished 2008-09 ranked among the top two of eight Bulldogs statistical catego-ries (fi rst-steals, assists, FGM, FGA; second-points, minutes, points per game, defensive rebounds). His other honors include The Sporting News Preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year and Southern Conference Coaches Preseason All-Conference. Wells will be relied on heavily from an offensive standpoint after he notched double-fi gure perfor-mances in 30 of 32 games last season.

DEFENSIVE CLAMPS: The 2009-10 Bulldogs have limited their opposition to under 48 points on three occasions this season. Ed Conroy’s team joins elite company, among seven other Citadel teams, to repeat the feat on multiple occasions during one season. (Dec. 4) Michigan State Rebounds Against Wofford: Tom Izzo wasn’t happy with Michigan State’s play in a home win over Wofford and he couldn’t express himself the way he wanted to. Raymar Morgan was a notable exception for Michigan State with 19 points and 11 re-bounds, both season highs. He was 7 of 11 from the fi eld and 5 of 5 at the free throw line in his third straight strong performance after going scoreless last Friday in a loss to Florida. The balanced Spartans (6-2) got 13 points from Kalin Lucas, 12 from Draymond Green and 11 from Chris Allen in shooting 54.5 percent from the fi eld. Noah Dahlman led the Terriers (4-5) with 19 points. He was 8 of 13 from the fi eld and 3 of 5 from the line. And he got the better of his brother, Isaiah, who started and scored two points for Michigan State. Isaiah went to an old phrase to describe his feelings. After a win at Georgia, narrow losses at Pittsburgh and Bradley and a respectable show-ing at Illinois, Wofford should have had the Spartans’ attention. But Michigan State trailed 9-4 before a 12-2 run, then led 31-26 at halftime. Leading 43-41, the Spartans fi nally pulled away with a 12-3 spurt. Michigan State bounced back from an 89-82 loss at No. 10 North Carolina on Tuesday but had 19 turnovers and wasn’t sharp for much of the game despite huge statistical edges. The Spartans held the Terriers to 36.5 percent shooting from the fi eld and had a 43-23 edge in rebounds. Green, Delvon Roe and Durrell Summers all had six rebounds, two more than anyone for Wofford. Lucas had nine assists for Michigan State, a much larger team than the Terriers, who enjoyed a 10-1 edge in steals. The Spartans shot 40 percent from 3-point range, a major improvement from their 2-of-20 effort in the Big Ten/ACC matchup at North Carolina. Izzo would if his team plays the way it did in its 44th consecutive nonconference home win. (Dec.1) National Championship Rematch: Ed Davis scored a career-high 22 points Tuesday night to help No. 10 North Carolina beat No. 9 Michigan State 89-82 in a rematch of last season’s national championship game won by the Tar Heels. Raymar Morgan scored 18 points to lead the Spartans, who shot 43 percent but were 2 of 20 from 3-point range. Kalin Lucas added 15 points and helped the Spartans get as close as six points late before the Tar Heels hit enough free throws to hold on. The teams met twice last season at Detroit’s Ford Field, with North Carolina beating

Michigan State by 35 points in the early sea-son Challenge. Then came the 89-72 win in April for the program’s fi fth NCAA champion-ship, a game in which North Carolina led by 24 points in the fi rst half. It was a perfor-mance that put a damper on the Spartans’ thrilling tournament run that had galvanized the economically battered state of Michigan.

Coach Tom Izzo had said he didn’t plan to use last season as motivation, though some of his players admitted they were eager for another shot at the Tar Heels. And as if the Spartans needed any reminders of what hap-pened in April, the blue-clad students near the home bench greeted them for pregame warmups with chants of “Banner! Banner!” while pointing to the one hanging in the Smith Center rafters to commemorate last season’s title.

That forced the Spartans back into a fa-miliar role: trying to claw back against the Tar Heels in a game that had gotten away from them. This time, at least, the Spartans made it interesting, inching back and getting as close as six points fi ve times in the fi nal 2 minutes.

(Nov. 28) Izzo Sets School Record In Wins: Tom Izzo won his 341st game at Michigan State, setting the school record for victories in the No. 2 Spartans’ 106-68 win over Massachusetts on Saturday night in the Legends Classic. Izzo set the record the same week mentor and predecessor Jud Heathcote was inducted into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame. For years, it was Izzo who sat by Heathcote’s side as an assistant and associate head coach. When Heathcote retired, Izzo was his hand-picked successor. Izzo had already matched him with one national championship apiece. He now stands alone atop the Spartans’ win list with a 341-138 record in his 15th season. Chris Allen led the Spartans (5-1) with 18 points. Izzo made the hundreds of green-clad fans who made the trip to the Jersey shore wait a day for history after the Spartans were upset by Florida 77-74 on Friday night. They returned for a glimpse of school history in the consolation game of the tourna-ment, where Florida played Rutgers in the championship game. Like so many of Michigan State’s games against weak non-conference teams, this outcome was never in doubt. The Spartans used a 30-3 run in the fi rst half to turn this slice of school history into a lopsided one. Raymar Morgan scored 17 points, Kalin Lucas had 16 and Korie Lucious 13. Spartan fans held printed “341” cards and chanted Izzo’s name in the waning mo-ments, and stood and applauded him once the fi nal horn sounded. Izzo has led the Spar-tans to fi ve Final Fours since 1999 and lost the national championship game last season to North Carolina.

Izzo, Lucas and the Spartans are motivated to get there again and win the pro-gram’s third national title. Heathcote won the championship with Magic Johnson in 1979, and Izzo won his title in 2000. The Spartans were stunned by the Gators a night earlier in large part because they missed eight of 10 3-point attempts. The Minutemen (2-4) had a fl icker of success early with an 8-2 lead, then watched it evaporate into a 32-11 hole once the Spartans regained their long-range touch. Lucas hit a pair of 3s that tied the score, Lucious and Morgan connected during the run, and even when they went inside the arc, the Spartans still got three. Roe made the most of a shaky pass and errant landing when he was fouled on a layup and converted the three-point play for a 32-11 lead. Lucious hit three 3s in the fi rst half, and the Spartans went 8 for 15 on 3s to take a 55-38 lead into the break. Anthony Gurley scored 24 points and Ricky Harris had 15 for UMass.

(Nov. 22) Spartans Down Valparaiso: Long before Jud Heathcote left Michigan State in 1995, he made sure veteran assistant Tom Izzo was hired as his successor. Izzo and Heathcote now are tied atop the Michigan State record book with 340 victories after the No. 2 Spartans’ 90-60 win over Valparaiso on Sunday. It’ll give the old friends something to discuss Sunday night, when Heathcote was to be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City. Izzo was catching a plane and headed for the ceremonies shortly after his Spartans (4-0) beat the Crusaders (1-3). Chris Allen scored 22 points to lead Michigan State and Kalin Lucas added 15. Brandon Wood had 24 points for Valparaiso. The game was a regional matchup in the Legends Classic. The Spartans head to Atlantic City, N.J., for a game Friday against Florida in the tournament semifi nals. Valparaiso coach Homer Drew said it was the Crusaders’ misfortune to run into the Spar-tans after Izzo was angry at his team for what he considered a lackluster effort in a victory over Toledo earlier this week. The Spartans won their 43rd straight home game against nonconference opponents, extending a streak that started after a loss to Duke on Dec. 3, 2003. Izzo, in his 15th season at Michigan State, has a 340-137 record highlighted by the 2000 national championship. He was an assistant to Heathcote before taking over the program. Izzo’s teams are 38-0 at home in November. Michigan State outran and outjumped a swarming Valparaiso zone during a 20-4 fi rst-half run that gave the Spartans at 25-9 lead. The Spartans led by as many as 24 points in the fi rst half and were ahead 46-28 at the break. Allen had 11 points in the fi rst half. Valparaiso got within 15 points early in the second half, but never seriously threatened Michigan State. Valparaiso hasn’t shied away from tough competition, having lost a week ago at No. 6 North Carolina, 88-77. Cory Johnson scored 16 points for the Crusaders, who shot 33 percent from the fl oor. Delvon Roe had 10 points and 17 rebounds for Michigan State. Raymar Morgan scored nine points for the Spartans after missing the Toledo game be-cause of ankle and foot injuries. Michigan State outrebounded Valparaiso, 45-31.

Wednesday night’s game was a lot different than the previous meeting between The Citadel and Michigan State. Last time, the Bulldogs were unable to get anybody into double-digit scoring. Unlike their previous meeting, three Bulldogs scored in double-fi gures in The Citadel’s 79-65 loss to Michigan State in the Breslin Center, where 14,759 people fi lled the arena. Austin Dahn led the Bulldogs with a season-high 17 points after nailing fi ve 3-point fi eld goals. Bryan Streeter contributed 10 points and four rebounds to give him a season-high in both categories. Cameron Wells collected 14 points, a career-high of fi ve steals and dished a season-high of six assists. The Bulldogs struggled from the fi eld, hitting 23-of-59 shots. The Citadel stayed in the game with their strength from behind the arc, shooting 40 percent. Another hot spot for the Bulldogs was the foul line, where they shot 81.8 percent with Wells shooting a perfect 4-for-4. Michigan State started the game with an 8-0 run with the Bulldogs earning their fi rst basket with 16:15 on the clock after a 3-pointer by Zach Urbanus, which would be the only points on the game for Urbanus. The Spartans continued to run away with the game in the fi rst half, getting ahead by as many as 18. As the end of the fi rst half drew closer, the Bulldogs began to pick up the pace. With 1:13 left in the half, the Spartans were up by 12 after a layup by Goran Suton. The Bulldogs responded with a layup by Streeter, which cut the lead to 10. With the Spar-tans up, 41-31, the Bulldogs continued to chip away at the lead, getting within eight after back-to-back free throws by Wells and Dahn. The Citadel went into halftime down, 41-33. Dahn led the Bulldogs at the half with eight points, followed by Wells and Streeter with six, respectively. The Citadel shot 36.4 percent from the fi eld and 45.5 percent from behind the arc in the fi rst half. With a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line, the Bulldogs were outshooting the Spartans from the stripe. Both teams had seven turnovers in the fi rst half. Michigan State was led by Raymar Morgan in the fi rst half with 13 points and seven rebounds. The Spartans shot 57.1 percent from the fi eld, and outrebounded the Bulldogs, 20-16, in the half. Michigan State scored the fi rst basket out of the break with a jumper by Morgan. Wells responded back to cut the lead back down to eight. The second half was a much better half for the Bulldogs, who managed to keep the game within reach for most of the half.

It was a back-and-forth battle for the fi rst six minutes of the game, where one team would score and the other would score, keep-ing the game between eight and 12 points. The Spartans jumped ahead by 14 with a la-yup by Morgan at 10:15, but a 3-pointer by Cosmo Morabbi would cut the lead back down to eleven. A free throw by Demetrius Nelson put the Bulldogs within 10. With 8:29 on the clock, Michigan State began to take control of the game. For the next 8:30, the Spartans managed to get up by as many as 17. With 1:39 on the clock, Durrell Summers hit a free throw to put the Spartans up, 78-61. The Bulldogs contin-ued to battle and refused to give up. Back-to-back free throws by Nelson cut the lead to 15. The Bulldogs began to take control, but there wasn’t enough time left on the clock. A layup by Streeter with 18 seconds left would cut the lead to 14, and would be the last bas-ket of the game. The Spartans took away a 79-65 victory over the Bulldogs, who began to spark to little too late. Dahn led the Bulldogs in the second half with nine points, while Wells contributed eight. The Citadel shot 42.3 percent from the fi eld in the second half and 35.7 percent from the 3-point line. With only seven foul shots, the Bulldogs shot 71.4 percent from the stripe. The Bulldogs had 10 turnovers and 15 points in the second half. Michigan State was led by Morgan in the second half with 13 points and Summers added 12. The Spartans found their 3-point shot in the second half, shooting 33.3 percent. They shot 47.8 percent from the fi eld and 66.7 percent from the foul line. The Bulldogs fall to 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in Southern Conference play, while the Spartans improve to 7-2 on the season. Morgan recorded a double-double to lead the Spartans with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Three other Spartans scored in double-fi gures with Chris Allen and Summers contributing 12 points, respectively, and Delvon Roe with 10.

Senior Joe Wolfi nger recorded his fi rst career double-double in a 64-45 victory over visiting Kenyon College on Friday night. Wolfi nger scored 20 points and fi nished with 12 rebounds, helping the Bulldogs to dominate the paint, while team-mate Cameron Wells scored 11 points to lead the backcourt.

The Citadel (1-0) converted 24-of-62 shots (38.7%) in the con-test, struggling to fi nd their touch from 3-point range by con-verting 3-of-20 attempts. Wells hit on 3-of-12 shots from the fi eld, 5-for-6 from the free throw line and grabbed nine re-bounds. Backcourt mate Zach Urbanus hit 2-of-7 from the fi eld, all from beyond the arc, and hauled in four boards.

“Our whole team did a great job of playing with energy and the right mentality on the defensive end,” said head coach Ed Con-roy. “We had to do that because it was a tough night shooting. For (Joe) Wolfi nger to come through and score some big baskets for us in the second half, when the score was a little tight, and give us a lead was really encouraging. He has really improved on some fundamental things and it showed in his play tonight.”

As for Kenyon, J.T. Knight scored a team-high 15 points while Dave Knapke anchored the middle with 11 rebounds. Four players fi nished with three turnovers apiece as Ken-yon College fi nished with 20 as a unit. The Lords hit on 8-of-24 (33.3%) shots from beyond the arc, led by Knight’s 3-for-4 performance. Guard Anthony Chun fi nished with seven points on 4-for-6 shooting from the charity stripe in the loss.

Leading 33-25 at the end of the fi rst half, The Citadel ex-tended its lead to 43-31 on an Urbanus three-pointer at the 13:51 mark of the second half. The highlight of the run came when Wells found Wolfi nger for an open dunk.

With The Citadel leading 49-37 at the 9:31 mark, Knight knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to nine points. The Bulldogs an-swered with a 13-2 run over the next 7:29 to lead by a 62-42 margin. The Bulldogs turned on their defensive pressure, over the fi nal fi ve minutes of action, forcing multiple turnovers to secure the victory.

Junior guard Cameron Wells led The Citadel with 23 points, how-ever it was not enough to deter a Charleston Southern victory at McAlister Field House on Tuesday evening, as the Buccaneers escaped with a 61-60 victory. Wells converted 10-of-16 shots in the contest, including one three pointer, in 32 minutes of action.

Trailing by one point with the possession, CSU’s Jamarco War-ren drove to the hoop for the game-winner with 1.2 seconds re-maining. Warren, who fi nished with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, forced the Bulldogs to immediately call a timeout for the fi nal pos-session. After a deep pass down the court, and subsequent foul, the game ended in favor of the Buccaneers. Warren (13 points) shared the stage with teammate Kelvin Martin who notched 15 points, while pulling down 10 boards, on 6-for-10 shooting from the fi eld.

“It is a tough ending to the game,” said head coach Ed Conroy. “As I told our team this game will not defi ne our team and will not defi ne our season. It’s about getting better, especially at this time of year. Tonight with this game and this opponent obviously there was a lot for us to learn from it and go to work tomorrow. We have three games coming up this weekend where we will fi nd a lot out about our team and I am excited about that opportunity.”

Fellow Bulldogs guard Zach Urbanus led the team with three 3-pointers in the game, scoring 12 points and forcing two steals on the defensive end. Joe Wolfi nger manned the middle with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds, including three offensive. Conroy’s unit was sparked by Cosmo Morabbi’s nine points off the bench, including a pair of critical 3-pointers during a two minute span that gave The Citadel a 58-55 lead with 4:09 remaining. The Citadel falls to 1-1 with the loss, while Charleston Southern earns their fi rst win of the season.

In a back-and-forth contest throughout, the score was tied on eight separate occasions and the two teams changed the lead 10 times. The Buccaneers converted 25-of-48 shots (52.7%), where-as The Citadel managed 24-of-57 shooting (42.1%). Charleston Southern held a 28-26 edge in the paint.

The Citadel Basketball team won the fi rst game of the Hispanic College Fund Challenge, staving off a late charge by Eastern Michigan, 63-56. Junior point guard Cameron Wells scored 24 points, a game-high, to become the 26th member of the Bulldog’s 1,000 point club. Wells, who reached the milestone in 66 games, becomes the quickest player in history to reach the plateau.

“I am happy for Cameron that his hard work has paid off,” said head coach Ed Conroy. “With a talented player like Cameron, and as hard as he works, there are going to be a lot of records and different accolades that come his way.”

“As far as the win tonight, that shows the resolve of this team. We have said that as pain as Charleston Southern was, it was not going to defi ne our sea-son. As I told the guys after the game, this is a really quality victory to-night. That Eastern Michigan team would do really well in the Southern Con-ference and Brandon Bawdry would be a Player of the Year candidate.”

Joe Wolfi nger, who added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Zach Urbanus (12 points) also scored in double fi gures for The Citadel. Urbanus hit 3-of-5 from be-yond the arc, closing in on fi fth place among best 3-point shooters in Bull-dog history. He stands four back of Donny McLendon and Dante Terry, each with 160. Wolfi nger chipped in a team-high seven boards, six on the defensive end.

Eastern Michigan, who falls to 1-1 on the season, was led offensive-ly by Brandon Bowdry’s 14 points. Bowdry added nine rebounds, all de-fensive. Teammates Justin Dobbins, who netted 12, Jay Higgins (10 pts.) and Carlos Medlock (10 pts.) all reached double-fi gures in scoring.

As a unit, The Citadel (2-1) fi nished with a 42.9% fi eld goal percentage (21-49), while EMU (1-1) shot 21-of-47 from the fi eld. Behind Wells’ 10-of-12 shooting from the free throw line, the Bulldogs fi nished 16-of-20 as a team (80%). The Bulldogs also held an edge in second chance points (11-2) and points off turnovers (14-10) in the contest.

“Growing up in the Midwest, people will say that the game is called the same way all over the country, but it is really not,” Conroy added. “You saw that tonight, it was a very physical contest, and we explained that at halftime how Eastern Michi-gan was getting into us. In the second half, because we cut well, and shot the ball well and drove the ball well that was a huge key to the basketball game.”

The Citadel held a 26-22 edge at the end of the fi rst half, capitalizing on 14 points in the paint. Wolfi nger led all scorers with nine points at the break, con-verting three shots from the fl oor along with a pair of free throws. The Bull-dogs grabbed 17 rebounds, fi ve offensive, with Wolfi nger, Groselle and Wells each responsible for three. Meanwhile, Bowdry had high marks for the Ea-gles, six points, and teammate Carlos Medlock joined him with four boards.

With the score tied at 9-9 at the 15:53 mark of the half, The Citadel put together a 14-5 run over the next seven minutes of action. Wolfi nger scored fi ve points during that run, while the defense closed the door on the Eagles by forcing seven missed 3-pointers. Combined with two turnovers during the span, the Bulldogs established their largest lead of the half.

Jay Higgins and L.J. Frazier hit back-to-back buckets, closing the lead to 23-19 with 4:01 remaining. Wells closed out the half with three points in the fi nal 1:18 for the 26-22 lead.

Joe Wolfi nger scored a team-high 18 points and Cameron Wells netted 12 points, in a 72-55 loss to Missouri State at the Hispanic College Fund Challenge. Bears forward Kyle Weems scored a game-high 23 points in the game, leading the second half charge with 16 points.

Wolfi nger knocked down 6-of-9 shots from the fi eld, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, while grabbing a team best seven caroms. Wells was successful on 5-of-12 shots from the fl oor and dished out three assists. Zach Urbanus capped off the Bulldogs leaders in points with eight. Urbanus hit a pair of three-point baskets to move to 158 in his career. The Citadel moves to 2-2 with the loss.

“We knew that Missouri State would be physical and Cameron (Wells) still fi nished with a good stat line,” said head coach Ed Conroy. “He got an early foul in the second half that was a tough call. I was pleased with our team from a tempo standpoint and proud of our guys. It was diffi cult because we missed a lot of open looks in the fi rst half. Our guys stayed tough, disciplined and managed to do all the things that we set out to do.”

Weems, who found his range in the second half, was 8-for-14 in the game and 5-of-7 from the three-point line. He shared team-high re-bounding honors, six, with Caleb Patterson. As a unit the Bears hit 18-of-29 shots in the second half, totaling 62.1%. Missouri State hit 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the 3-point line, in the second half, and tallied nine in the game. The Bears improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs offense struggled in the fi rst half, converting 8-of-23 shots from the fi eld (34.8%), however the defense shined by hold-ing the Bears to 30.8% (8-26) shooting. Each team was unable to fi nd rhythm from beyond the arc with The Citadel hitting 3-for-11 (27.3%). Meanwhile, Missouri State managed to hit 2-of-7 (27.3%) from 3-point range. The Bears held a slim 26-25 lead heading into halftime coming on a Nafi s Ricks free throw with 37 seconds left.

Trailing 22-14 with 5:56 remaining in the fi rst half, a pair of Cosmo Morabbi free throws followed by a Wolfi nger trey closed the gap to three points for the Bulldogs in just over a minute of action.

Missouri State held a 25-22 edge at the 1:40 mark when the Bulldogs Daniel Eykyn came off a screen to knock down a three-pointer and knot the game inside one minute to play.

Joe Wolfi nger’s 17 points led fi ve players in double fi gures as The Citadel cruised past Maryland Eastern Shore, 88-62. Three-point marksman Zach Urbanus knocked down three 3-pointers en route to a 14 point performance, moving into sole possession of fi fth place among Bulldog 3-point shooters. Backcourt mate Austin Dahn found his rhythm with a 4-of-7 performance, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, scoring 11 points as he takes over eighth place from Jamie Jenkins. With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 3-2 and win two of three games in the Hispanic College Fund Chal-lenge.

“We had an excellent day at the center spot,” head coach Ed Conroy added. “When you combine Groselle and Wolfi nger they logged all the minutes from the free-throw line. It is nice when you plans work out and Mike had an exceptional practice and tournament here today. It was also great to see Austin (Dahn) knock down the three pointers today. He has been playing the best basketball this year and worked on many phases of his game.

Neal Pitt led Maryland Eastern Shore (0-5) with 17 points. The tandem of James Cotton and Kevin White added 10 points, while Lyvann Obame Obame fi nished with 10 boards.

The Bulldogs fi nished the game by hitting on 31-of-54 shots (57.4%), dominat-ing bench play with a 24-15 edge. They established a JQH Arena record with 13 3-pointers. UMES was limited to 20-of-53 (37.7%) in the game. The Citadel also fi nished with an advantage in assists (22-10).

The Citadel was hitting on all cylinders in the fi rst half offensively, converting 15-of-23 shots (65.2%) and shattering a previous best that was established against Charleston Southern (50%). More impressive was the Bulldogs hit 9-for-13 (69.2%) from beyond the arc that provided a 42-30 lead.

Wolfi nger was a perfect 5-of-5 from the fi eld, scoring 15, and all points came from beyond the 3-point line. He was a dominating presence in the post with six rebounds, all defensive. With a pair of three-point buckets Dahn moved into eighth place on the Bulldogs all-time list, passing Jamie Jenkins. He also dished out three assists.

Junior guard Cameron Wells had his breakout performance, on a national stage, with a game-high 19 point outing against eighth ranked West Vir-ginia on Tuesday night. Wells, who hit 8-of-17 from the fi eld, also dished out four assists and forced three steals in front of a sellout crowd of 12, 345 at the Charleston Civic Center. Despite the performance from Wells, the Mountaineers emerged with a 69-50 victory over The Citadel.

Fellow junior Zach Urbanus had a hot hand from 3-point range, converting 4-of-6, ending with 12 points and tied for a team-high six rebounds. Joe Wolfi nger rounded out double-digit scorers, 11 points, also had six boards in 37 minutes of play. The two teams were knotted with 30 rebounds in the post as The Citadel fi nished with six offensive boards. The Bulldogs (3-3) knocked down 19-of-41 attempts (46.3%), including 9-for-16 from beyond the arc.

The trio of Kevin Jones (11 points), Darryl Bryant (10 points) and Casey Mitchell (10 points) accounted for double fi gures with the Mountaineers (2-0). Forwards Wellington Smith, along with Jones, grabbed a game-high eight boards. Despite being outshot by The Citadel, West Virginia managed to hit on 29-of-63 (46.0%) attempts. The Mountaineers fi nished with a 35-14 edge in the post which led to a 13-3 differential in second chance points.

“He is really good and gives them the ability to play off the bounce,” WVU head coach Bob Huggins said of Wells performance. “They run a great of-fense and are so well coached he gives them someone, at the end of the clock, that can make the shot. I really like his versatility, he not only play you off the bounce but he shoots from the perimeter and can make shots in the post.”

A Wells breakaway dunk at the 15:41 mark of the game that cut the lead to 10-7 sparked a Mountaineers defense that handcuffed the Bulldogs for the next 7:37. The Citadel rallied to hit three consecutive 3-point buckets, two from Urbanus and bank shot by Wells, slicing the lead to 27-16 with 6:17 remaining in the half.

Trailing 32-18 with 4:19 to go on the clock, Wolfi nger drained a 3-pointer that led to a 6-1 run to close out the half.

The Mountaineers held a 33-24 advantage at the break, hitting 14-of-23 from the fi eld (42.4%). The Bulldogs was led offensive by Wells with a game-high 11 points. Urbanus and Wolfi nger, both with six points, along with Matt Clark’s late free throw accounted for the 8-of-19 (42.1%) Citadel shooting.

Cameron Wells continued his spectacular play at point guard for The Cita-del, as the Bulldogs defeated UVA-Wise 69-37 on the fi rst day of the Col-legeInsider.com Skip Prosser Invitational. Wells scored 20 points, hitting 9-of-17 from the fi eld, while center Joe Wolfi nger chipped in 16 points and six boards to move the Bulldogs to 4-3 on the season.

“The great thing about Cameron is that he is coachable,” said Ed Conroy of Wells’ performance. “He is a player that is never satisfi ed and wants to get better. He is someone that would be grateful for his teammates, Wolfi nger, Urbanus, Dahn and Matt Clark, because they can knock down the three and open up the lane for him. Overall he continues to get better and a big key was in the fi rst three or four possessions when we put him in the post and took their guards underneath the rim.”

Freshman Ben Cherry came off the bench to score six points for The Cita-del, marking one of six non-starters to impact the scoring column. Cherry scored all six points from the 3-point line, while grabbing three boards. Fel-low freshman Mike Groselle added fi ve points and fi ve rebounds, giving the Bulldogs a 21-4 edge in bench scoring. The backcourt of Zach Urbanus and Austin Dahn combined to score 10 points, fi ve apiece, with Urbanus adding six rebounds. Bryan Streeter joined Urbanus and Wolfi nger as a key inside presence, with six caroms.

Individually, Wells moved into 22nd on The Citadel all-time scoring list, passing Steve Fishel (1,068), while notching his 19th career 20-point per-formance. The Bulldogs converted 23-of-55 shots (41.8%), and 5-of-18 (27.8%) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Highland Cavaliers were held to 15-of-47 shooting (31.9%), converting only 2-of-12 from the 3-point line.

“I was pleased right from the very beginning with the defensive effort to-night,” Conroy added. “Our fi rst fi ve guys came out and established the fact that we were going to work really hard on the defensive end. Our guys managed to chase their shooters, making it diffi cult to get good looks, and with their spread offense we kept them out of the paint as well.”

Josh Jordan (14 points) and Pance Kecev (11 points) were the only two UVA-Wise players to reach double fi gures. Jordan, who added six rebounds to his credit, hit 6-of-11 in the game in 33 minutes of play. Kecev knocked down 4-of-14 shots, only two from 3-point range, and was forced into four turnovers by the Bulldogs defense. Jordan kept the Highland Cavaliers close in the paint, with The Citadel holding a 30-20 edge.

Junior Zach Urbanus exploded with seven 3-pointers, tying a career-high, to lead The Citadel to a 67-53 victory over Central Connecticut State and con-clude the CollegeInsider.com Skip Prosser Invitational. Urbanus, who tied his mark of seven treys against Chattanooga on Dec. 1, 2007, led the team with 23 points. Teammate Cameron Wells also reached double fi gures, 14 points, and established a career-high nine assists. Sophomore Cosmo Morabbi rounded out double-digit scorers with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, both tying career bests.

“Our backcourt had a sensational night,” said head coach Ed Conroy. “Zach obvi-ously kept us in it early on with his three-point shot. Cameron had as good a day as ever playmaking against the zone defense. He did a sensational job of getting into the paint, even though they were zoning and trying to keep him out of the paint and fi nding open shooters. Cosmo (Morabbi) and Zach really benefi ted from Cameron’s playmaking.”

The Citadel improved to 5-3 overall and was sparked by the play of its bench that accounted for 21 points. Junior Matt Clark played a signifi cant role with fi ve points and six rebounds, fi ve on the offensive glass. Teammate Mike Groselle chipped in four points in 12 minutes of action. Joe Wolfi nger fi nished with a quiet seven points and fi ve rebounds. Wells’ seven caroms provided a 35-28 edge in the rebounding category for the Bulldogs. As a unit, The Citadel hit 26-of-57 shots (45.6%), knocking down 13-of-26 in the second half. Behind Urbanus and Morabbi marksmanship from beyond the arc the Bulldogs fi nished 13-for-34 (38.2%).

After leading 35-33 at the break, the Blue Devils struggled from the fi eld in the second half where they managed to hit 7-of-19 (36.8%) shots. Robby Ptacek fi nished as the only CCSU player in double fi gures with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Ptacek streaked out to 15 points by halftime but was held in check by Conroy’s defense in the second half.

Trailing 41-40 with 14:03 remaining in the game, Urbanus buried a three-pointer to give The Citadel a lead that they would not relinquish. The host Bulldogs were recognized with three all-tournament selections including Wells, Urbanus and Wolfi nger. Central Connecticut State (1-3) garnered two selections, Ptacek and Shemik Thompson. Thompson missed Sunday’s game due to an injury.

The backcourt duo of Zach Urbanus and Cameron Wells, who each scored 23 points, was not enough against Southern Con-ference rival Davidson College who won 74-63 at McAlister Field House on Thursday evening. Wells notched his fourth 20-point contest of the season while Urbanus eclipsed the mark for the second time in as many contests. Meanwhile, Will Archambault recorded a team-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting and knock-ing down 6-of-9 three point attempts.

Urabanus and Wells were the only Bulldogs (5-4, 0-1 SoCon) to reach double digit points. Urbanus fi nished with a 8-for-12 show-ing from the fi eld, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. He cur-rently stands with 177 career 3-pointers, 14 shy of Ryan Nesbit for fourth place. Meanwhile, Wells’ 23 points, on 9-of-16 shoot-ing, moves him ahead of Kent Hill and Noy Castillo on the all-time list into 20th. Joe Wolfi nger shared team-high honors in rebounds with Wells, grabbing eight, while Matt Clark chipped in seven car-oms. Cosmo Morabbi led the the team with four assists. The Citadel struggled shooting the ball, hitting 24-of-61 in the game (39.3%) which included a stark 6-of-25 from beyond the arc.

Along with Archambault, Jake Cohen (20 pts.) and J.P. Kuhl-man (19 pts.) scored in double fi gures for Davidson. The trio combined to hit 23-of-38 (60.5%) from the fi eld and 13-for-21 (61.9%) from 3-point range. As a unit, the Wildcats converted 27-of-56 shots (48.2%) for the game, including 14-of-27 fi eld goals in the second half. They managed to hit 55.6% (15-27) from 3-point range, which made the difference in the contest.

Leading 36-30 at the half, Davidson extended the lead to 50-35 over the fi rst 4:28 of the second half on an Archambault trey. The Citadel answered with a 13-7 run over the next 6:45 to pull within nine, 57-48, but would draw no closer. With the victory the Wildcats improve to (2-5, 1-0) on the season.

Junior guard Zach Urbanus set a career-high for most consecutive 20-point contests, scoring 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, to lead The Citadel to 68-43 victory over Georgia Southern. The victory im-proves their record to 6-4 overall, 1-1 in Southern Conference play.

“I was really happy with the way that our guys responded,” said Bulldogs Head Coach Ed Conroy. “I got after them pretty good following the Davidson game and yesterday in practice. Guys like Bryan Streeter, who demonstrated great leadership, along with Zach (Urbanus) and Cameron (Wells) really came and set the tone on the defensive end. We have had moments this year where both offensively and defensively that we really looked good. But I don’t know if we have put it together as consistently as we did tonight.”

Urbanus, who scored 23 points respectively against Davidson and Central Connecticut State, led all scorers by virtue of hitting 5-for-7 from 3-point range. He was joined by Cosmo Morabbi (2-4), Wells (1-2) and Dahn (2-5) to combine for 10-of-22 shooting (45.5%) from beyond the arc. Bryan Streeter, who was not in the starting lineup, provided a force in the paint with six points and a team-high six rebounds for the Bulldogs. The Citadel converted 22-of-55 attempts (40%) from the fi eld and added 14-of-22 from the free-throw line (63.6%).

As for Georgia Southern, who in the midst of a three-game losing streak to the Bulldogs, they were led by Ben Drayton and Willie Powers with 10 points apiece. Johntavious Rucker added eight point on 4-of-6 shooting, leading the Eagles with highest number of made baskets. Tyler Troupe grabbed nine boards, six on the defensive glass, to lead both squads.

Urbanus sparked the Bulldogs lineup midway through the fi rst half of play when he converted a pass from Cameron Wells at the 11:35 mark to close the defi cit to 11-9 in favor of GSU.

With 6:21 remaining the contest, and Wells at the line, the junior point guard stretched the advantage to 30, 64-34, marking a game-high.

Urbanus and Wells continue to move further up the rankings for Citadel shoot-ers. Urbanus has now connected on 183 career 3-pointers, leaving him eight shy of Ryan Nesbit in fourth place. As for Wells, his 14 points moves him into 18th place on the all-time scoring list. Wells will look to pass Felipe de las Pozas (1,135 pts.) next on the list.
