A new stopover program offered

by Air Canada may be just the

ticket for visiting family, friends

or colleagues who have connection times

longer than six hours.

The Air Canada Stopover program

allows travellers to make the most of

two consecutive flights and enhance

their travel experience with one night

of hotel accommodation—at no cost or

for a flat fee.

Available at YVR and Toronto’s

Pearson International Airport,

Air Canada’s two main hubs, the

program allows passengers travelling

internationally the opportunity to break

up their journey and explore a bit of

Canada while en route to their final

destination. The stopover program

offers a great selection of hotels in both

cities, and travellers can even opt for

a second Canadian stopover on return

flights.

The Canadian break comes at no

additional airfare cost and hotel

accommodation is free with an Air

Canada Executive Class or Latitude ticket;

for those travelling on Tango and Tango

Plus tickets, a minimal fee applies.

And for those travellers with

connections under six hours, Air

Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounges offer

comfort and relaxation at most major

Canadian airports, including YVR. For

more information, visit the Air Canada

website at www.aircanada.com.

As part of the Airport Authority’s

plans to welcome the world

during the 2010 Winter Games,

they have commissioned 15 community

showcase films from cities across British

Columbia to highlight the best of the

province.

The 15 short films will be shown on

select video screens throughout YVR and

online at YVRConnections.com leading

up to and during the Games period.

The following B.C. communities

have been invited to participate in the

program. With direct flights to YVR,

each community provides visitors with

a gateway to the various regions of

the Province: Campbell River; Castlegar;

Cranbrook; Fort St. John; Kamloops;

Kelowna; Nanaimo; Penticton; Port

Hardy; Prince George; Prince Rupert;

Terrace; Tofino; Victoria; and Williams

Lake.

The Airport Authority will provide

each community with a $10,000 spon-

sorship to film and edit a three-minute

promotional video about their commu-

nity that welcomes the world to British

Columbia. Throughout this month, mem-

bers of the Airport Authority’s executive

team will make announcements and

cheque presentations in each of the 15

communities. Filmmakers in each of

the participating communities will be

selected with the help of local Spirit of

BC Community Committees.

As B.C.’s airport, and the Official

Airport of the 2010 Winter Games, YVR

has the unique opportunity to showcase

the province and country to the 10

million-plus visitors expected to pass

JUNE 2009

Stop over in Vancouver with Air Canada

In another airport “first,” YVR has

launched WebTrak, a new online flight

tracking and noise monitoring tool.

WebTrak for YVR allows residents to

see for themselves flight activity over

much of Metro Vancouver. Using radar

data received from NAV CANADA and

noise data collected at 20 noise monitoring

terminals stationed throughout Metro

Vancouver, WebTrak displays a map of the

region and current flight and noise activity.

A simple visual key identifies aircraft type,

elevation and noise level, and whether the

aircraft is arriving or departing.

With easy-to-use features and

menu options, anyone with access to

the Internet can replay historical flight

activity within the past 30 days, locate

their residence on the map to determine

the distance from aircraft in flight, and,

if they wish, register a comment or

concern about a particular flight.

The Airport Authority recognizes

that noise associated with air travel

can have an impact on surrounding

communities. By putting flight and

noise information at the public’s

fingertips through WebTrak, the

Airport Authority hopes to promote

greater understanding of their aircraft

operations and the complex airspace

around YVR.

Developed in cooperation with NAV

CANADA, the company responsible

for providing air navigation services

throughout Canada, WebTrak for YVR

is the latest component of the Airport

Authority’s current Airport Noise and

Operations Monitoring System.

For more than 10 years, the Airport

Authority has been using leading-edge

monitoring systems to measure and

quantify noise associated with air travel

at YVR, identify trends, monitor aircraft

operations and mitigation strategies, and

respond to questions and concerns from

the community. The goal? To balance the

community’s desire for safe, convenient

24-hour air travel with enjoyable urban

living for YVR’s neighbours.

The WebTrak tool is available through

the Noise Management section on

Just like roads and highways, YVR’s

runway system requires regular,

ongoing maintenance to keep

it in top working condition. Regular

maintenance is carried out daily at

YVR, but each year the south runway

is temporarily closed for night-time

operations that cannot be performed

during regular daily maintenance.

This year’s south runway maintenance

closure will take place from July 5 to

September 5, 2009, giving us another

reason to keep our fingers crossed for

good weather. Although summer is the

busiest time of the year for passenger

traffic at YVR, it is also the best time

of year, weather-wise, for paving and

electrical projects.

The duration of the closure is longer

this year than in years past, to allow

sufficient time to complete the first year

of a comprehensive three-year project to

upgrade the airfield lighting system on

the south runway.

Other planned maintenance projects

including repainting of runway lines,

which fade from weather and the use

of snow-clearing equipment during

winter operations. Additionally, Airport

Authority engineers will be busy with

rubber removal, erosion repairs, minor

electrical work and touching up runway

asphalt with sealant.

These projects require the

coordinated effort of hundreds of

Airport Authority employees and

contractors within a short and intensive

summer night-time period.

The south runway will be closed

nightly between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. to

allow crews to carry out the work.

While the south runway is closed,

the north runway will be used for

all take-offs and landings. Once work

is completed, normal operations will

resume.

Any further changes to runway use

for summer schedules will be posted on

www.yvr.ca and included in upcoming

editions of SkyTalk.

President’s Perspective: Staying the Course in 2009

On May 14, 2009, the Airport Authority welcomed

members of the community to our Annual Public

Meeting, where we had the opportunity to meet with

a number of our community members and present our 2008

operational and financial review.

YVR is British Columbia’s airport. The Airport Authority

is a private, not-for-profit corporation that operates and

manages YVR. We do not have shareholders and all excess

of revenue over expenditures is re-invested in airport

development and service improvements. We are a community-

based organization that is driven to produce results for our

customers and our community.

2008 was a unique year for us and the aviation industry;

we started the year with above average passenger growth and

ended the year with a decline in passenger traffic. As economic

uncertainties continue, we are committed to maintaining our

strong fiscal position through prudent management and our

conservative financial planning approach.

Despite the ups and downs of last year’s traffic

numbers, we welcomed an unprecedented 17.9-million

passengers in 2008; a first for our airport. We are also

gearing up to welcome the new Canada Line Rapid Transit

this fall. You may have seen the trains conducting their

test runs along the track between YVR’s three stations

on Sea Island. The Airport Authority is a funding partner

along with the federal and provincial governments,

committing $300-million to the project.

Our mission is to serve our community by building

outstanding airports. In 2004, we announced a 10-year,

$1.4-billion program to improve our facilities that will allow

us to provide outstanding service to our customers for years

to come.

Many of these projects are near completion including the

domestic C-Pier upgrade that will welcome travellers from

across Canada; the enhanced International Arrivals Area with

a new Customer Information Counter provides a spacious

entrance for arriving international passengers; and the Public

Observation Area in the Domestic Terminal that will offer

views of the airfield and informational displays.

2009 is both an exciting year and a challenging one.

We look forward to building openings as our projects are

completed and continuing with our 2010 Winter Games

preparations and initiatives. But as we continue with our

plans, we also face the same global economic hurdles as the

rest of the aviation industry. Passenger traffic is down and

our airline partners are facing financial challenges, so we are

reducing our operating costs to assist where we can.

I’ve said before that we have weathered uncertainties

before and the same holds true in 2009. The key is to stay the

course and continue efforts of making YVR the premier Asia

Pacific gateway, keeping our costs low and maintaining our

high level of customer service.

The YVR Art Foundation has

recognized five of British

Columbia’s young First Nations

artists as emerging talents and awarded

each with a $5,000 scholarship.

Awarded annually, these scholarships

ensure youth with artistic potential

receive training and skill development

in the fundamental skills of Northwest

Coast Art. It also helps them to create

works that celebrate Northwest Coast

art forms that are suitable for display in

public buildings.

This year’s recipients are Sophia

Beaton, Tsimshian, 22, wood carving;

Neil Goertzen, Haida, 18, wood carving;

Morgan Green, Tsimshian, 25, bronze

sculpture; Latham Mack, Nuxalk, 24,

wood carving; and Bryce Williams, Haida

and Coast Salish, 20, wood carving.

The recipients will use the funds to

develop their art through attendance

at workshops, schools and through

working with masters, mentors or elders

in their particular media. Part of their

training will be to develop a work for

display at YVR; keep your eyes peeled

for new additions to YVR’s growing art

collection.

The foundation was created by

the Airport Authority to foster the

development of Northwest Coast Native

Art. YVR is home to some of the most

magnificent works of Northwest Coast

From tracking polar bears in a

tundra buggy, gazing at magical

Northern Lights from the comfort

of a heated teepee, or cruising into the

heart of Inuit communities, Canada’s

North offers travellers some of the most

extraordinary experiences on earth.

To help inspire visitors to make the

North a “must see now” destination, the

Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC),

Canada’s national tourism marketing

organization, has invited Nunavut

Tourism, Northwest Territories Tourism

and the Yukon Department of Tourism

and Culture to participate in CTC

programming as a single partner to be

known as “Canada’s North.”

Recognition of Canada’s North as

a collective will permit the northern

territories to work together creatively,

while at the same time recognizing

respective budgets, strategies and

priorities.

“The synergy afforded by this

agreement has great potential,

particularly with the opportunity to

leverage the 2010 Winter Games to

drive tourism to the North,” said Diane

Ablonczy, Industry Canada’s Minister

of State (Small Business and Tourism).

“Canada’s northern territories truly

differentiate our country as a tourism

destination.”

Research indicates that the intention

of travellers to visit the Northern

Territories has increased dramatically,

soaring from almost nothing to as high

as 44 per cent in Germany, 41 per cent

in Mexico and 36 per cent in Australia.

And 26 per cent of travellers across

the CTC’s key markets are motivated to

include aboriginal cultural experiences,

celebrations and attractions in their

travel plans, especially in Europe where

interest is particularly high.

Air Canada Jazz, Air North and

Before the Wright brothers, few people

believed powered flight was possible. This

spirit of innovation has continued, and it

is driving the aviation industry’s response to its

environmental challenges.

As examples:

• Over the past 40 years, aircraft have become 70

per cent more fuel-efficient;

• Aviation has been successful at decoupling

emissions growth and actual growth. Traffic

growth is increasing at an average of five per

cent annually, while CO2 emissions are growing

around three per cent;

• The newest aircraft, the Airbus A380 and Boeing

787, consume on average less than three litres

of fuel per 100 passenger kilometres. This is

a fuel use that compares favourably to that of

compact cars, although aircraft travel much

further distances, much faster.

Today, engineers and researchers are making

incremental and frequent improvements that offer

large savings overall. For instance, the winglets

that airlines and manufacturers are retrofitting

onto some aircraft increase aerodynamic efficiency

and reduce fuel usage. Manufacturers are also

increasingly using light-weight materials such

as carbon composites to build aircraft and

components.

The aviation industry is also developing and

testing alternative fuels. One option is to blend

traditional jet fuel with biofuels. The International

Air Transport Association has set a goal for its

members to use 10 per cent alternative fuels by

2017.

The quest for further efficiency continues on a

number of additional fronts, including infrastructure

improvements in air traffic management systems to

reduce the amount of fuel wasted through inefficient

routing and flight patterns, and economic measures

to provide incentives to reduce emissions.

Revolutionary innovations would be the use

of algae-based fuels, hydrogen or solar energy

to provide some of the power to an aircraft, and

experiments are taking place today to show that

this is feasible. It is too early to say which of these

avenues of enquiry will lead to viable solutions,

but the air transport industry has stated that it is

committed to supporting advanced technological

innovation and to achieving the kind of ‘impossible’

developments that characterized flight itself.

To find out more about the industry’s use of

future technologies, visit www.Enviro.aero.

An airworthy two-seater Vickers-

Supermarine Mk IX Spitfire

aircraft recently sold at a

Bonhams Collectors auction in London,

England, for more than $3-million

Canadian. The buyer was Steven Brooks,

a British financier and polar adventurer.

The first two-seater MK IX Spitfire

to be offered at public auction for more

than 20 years, the aircraft had been

painstakingly restored to airworthiness

over a five-year period. It was offered as

freshly completed, zero-hours, ground-

up restoration to perfect two-seat TR

Mark IX specification. Originally it was a

single-seat Mark IX, but it now offers its

new owner the extra accommodation and

flexibility of a two-seat trainer variant.

When the Vickers-Supermarine

Spitfire family of single-seat fighter

aircraft initially entered service in 1938,

the Mark I model was an extremely

sophisticated, blindingly fast and

supremely powerful eight-gun weapon

of war. Training pilots were expected

to make the transition from training

aircraft to this new thoroughbred, and

the gulf between the two proved huge.

A two-seat training version of the Battle

of Britain Spitfire was first considered

in 1941, but barely a handful of local

service conversions were made before

1946. A post-war batch of 20 Mark IX

airframes were then converted into two-

seat form as the Type 509 model, for

supply most notably to the Indian and

Irish air forces.

The price was quoted in 1946

for the model was fifty-two hundred

British pounds (approximately $9,448

Canadian).

Air New Zealand receives gold standard for

environmental responsbility: Air New Zealand has received

the Enviro-Gold accreditation for being one of New Zealand’s

most environmentally responsible tourism businesses.

Enviro-Gold is the highest rating achievement by Qualmark

Green, a tourism criteria designed to extend environmental

and socially responsible actions for tourism businesses.

The criteria recognizes energy, water, waste, community,

conservation programs and monitoring.

American Airlines allows customers to take one-way

redemption flights: American Airlines has introduced

new ways for members of its AAdvantage frequent flyer

program to redeem awards by enabling members for the

first time to use awards for one-way trips, at half the

regular return redemption rate. American Airlines is also

offering members the opportunity to make round-trips

using a combination of one-way award tickets. This means

MileSAAver awards may be combined with AAnytime

awards, or Economy Class awards with First or Business

Class awards, to customize award travel.

American Airlines no longer accepting cash in-flight

on North American mainline routes: American Airlines no

longer accepts cash for payments on its mainline flights

within Canada, the continental United States, or to and from

Hawaii and Alaska. Passengers will need to use credit or

debit cards to pay for in-flight purchases such as headsets,

fresh meals, snacks and alcoholic beverages. The airline’s

affiliates, American Eagle and AmericanConnection, will

continue to accept cash payments.

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair give all passengers

access to ‘Manage My Booking’: Cathay Pacific and its

sister airline, Dragonair, have now extended access to their

Manage My Booking online functions to all passengers,

giving them more control over their own travel itineraries.

Until now, this has only been available to members of its

Marco Polo Club and Asia Miles loyalty schemes. Manage

My Booking, accessed through the airlines’ websites, enables

passengers to retrieve their most up-to-date flight status

and edit their personal information for their bookings on

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair and for sectors on any other

airlines booked via Cathay Pacific or Dragonair.

WestJet adds to service to the west coast for 2010:

WestJet is adding more flights to Vancouver and Abbotsford

for February and March 2010. The new flights will increase

the number of flights to the Lower Mainland to more than

350 for the two-month period. Visitors from 55 markets

across North America will have access to non-stop, direct

and connecting flights to Vancouver or Abbotsford. WestJet

will continue to operate non-stop flights from 25 markets,

including 18 Canadian cities.

WestJet and Southwest delay code-share

implementation: WestJet and Southwest Airlnes have

announced that as a result of the current economic recession

implementation of their code-share program will be delayed.

Southwest will re-direct a portion of its resources dedicated

to the code-share project toward other near-term revenue

opportunities. Both airlines said they remain committed to a

future code-share partnership. WestJet’s implementation of

the Sabre reservation system, which is key to code-sharing,

is on track and is expected to launch in the fourth quarter

of 2009.
