FFRROOMMTHE BOARDCHAIR

DDAAVVIIDD MMIIKKOOSSZZ —— CChhaaiirr

Dear Members,Anyone who has known me for any length of time is aware of all I owe to the National Show Horse. This

horse has had a significant positive impact on my equestrian career. Not just as a trainer but also as one of theNSHR foundation breeders. Even though the Arabian/Part-Arabian arena is where I enjoy a fair amount ofsuccess I believe it would be accurate to say my wife and I owe our careers to the National Show Horse. I lovethis horse. Please keep this in mind as I discuss our Registry’s possible future initiatives. The fact remains thatwe were founded as a Saddleseat breed. This was one of the factors that made our early shows fast paced, exciting and unique.

Over the past few years we have all worked to encourage nominations, registrations and transfers. You haveall heard or read about this from me as your Chairman over and over. I am certain you are all doing your best. Our numbers still continue to decline. We can debate the reasons but that will not propel us forward.

Some growth is occurring in discipline based organizations and events. In my opinion part of our lack ofgrowth is because the competition element of our events has overshadowed the “ Show”. This tends to leave uswith less time to network, (parties) and promote (stallion presentations and clinics). I believe we have neglectedoutreach while focusing too much time on nuances and rules. We have chosen to follow the path ofinclusiveness by making the non-saddleseat horses we produced a place to compete. Although this changesupported our success for quite a while it also undermined our uniqueness.

As a small breed the NSHR is positioned to take advantage of discipline driven showing. Being small couldalso cause us to feel the effects of the general downsizing occurring in all breeds to a greater degree. We arequalified to take a leadership role in the promotion of Saddleseat as a discipline. This could situate us to bettersupport the National Show Horse. We have the potential to do much more than just assure our relevancy intothe future.

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is currently investing a considerable amount of study intothe possibility of multi breed discipline oriented competitions. These events could provide a way of sharingcosts and supply us all with a greater degree of exposure to the general public. The general public happens tobe the pool of potential new riders and owners we are all striving to reach.

Our Show Horse Alliance is already structured and incorporated as a Saddleseat oriented multi breed venue. Please keep an open mind as we explore how SHA may help us preserve the future of the NSHR. Let’s encourage all our friends with Saddleseat horses of any breed or crossbreed to come to Finals and

participate in our SHA classes at ”the most fun show of year”.Your Board of Directors first and foremost responsibility is for the fiscal health of the NSHR. Please

remember forty percent (40%) of Show Horse Alliance income is mandated to go directly into the NSHR’streasury.

Words are never enough toexplain the feelings we havewhen death comes

unexpectedly. The National Show Horsecommunity lost one of it’s finest horsemenin March of 2009.

John White trained and exhibited someof our finest horses with his wife Lisa Joand sons, Zack and Rex. John broughtquality not quantity to horse shows acrossthe country. Together they were hard tobeat and had the unique ability to exhibithorses that performed in a way that willalways be remembered.

During the years of CF All Nite Long,Lisa Jo turned in class after class wherethat English pleasure horse was such astandout. Her ride in Freedom Hall on topof the green shavings was one for the agesand on the rail calling the shots was John.

The unforgettable Bette G will never be thoughtabout without thinking of John White as he patientlyguided her from championship to championship.

My personal memory of John White, a memory thathas given me peace of mind when sorting out thetragedy of one of our own leaving way too soon is of,The Gambler. I judged this horse early in his career ina driving class. I remember thinking the minute I sawhim come through the gate that John had anothersuper star in the making.

John White trained horses and he trained them well.He was quiet and made every horse that I ever sawhim with better than they were before he had them. When he trained them other people could ride them, and ride them easily because Lisa Jo could teach themto ride.

Last year at Finals watching Zack ride in the walk-trotclasses proved that these abilities have been passed on tothe next generation.

Lisa Jo, Zack and Rex have the support of the horseworld as they go forward in life without John. They willdo well because they had a great teacher who will be

missed by all of us. The loss of John may never makesense. For me it helps to believe that there is a betterplace. A place where when it is our time and we getthere those who went before us will be waiting and thenwe will understand.

For many years breeders have beenexperimenting with crossing horses suchas Arabian, American Saddlebred,

Morgan, Hackney, Andulusian, Dutch Harnessand others in pursuit of the ultimate Saddleseathorse. In fact the National Show Horse itself wasborn out of this activity.

The National Show Horse Registry (NSHR) recognizedthe breeders and owners need for a place to test their newcreations in show ring competition and have a high profilemarketing venue. In 2003 the NSHR introduced the ShowHorse Alliance committed to supporting a discipline basedsetting for these exciting new hybrid Saddleseat horses. The Show Horse Alliance is NOT a breed registry.

Many NSH supporters, old and new, were involvedwith these crossbreds so including them at our shows wasa natural fit.

In an effort to return to our roots the NSHR decided tolimit the SHA to Saddleseat crossbreds.

Two issues arose that encouraged us to change theprogram.

First DHH, second Open classes. One issue that surfaced was that the Dutch Harness

Horse itself is considered a crossbred by some. Many ofthe owners who were using DHH’s for breeding alsoexpressed an interest in showing them in our Show HorseAlliance. Secondly, although lightly attended the opensaddleseat type classes we offered were becoming afavorite of our spectators. Adding these horses to SHAaccommodated both of these groups and has the potentialto boost the size of the SHA classes. An additionaladvantage for the NSHR comes from the requirement thatall horses competing in these classes enroll in the ShowHorse Alliance.

Anyone who witnessed the driving competitionbetween Faydelle Schott’s Hackney pony and GregHaston’s Friesian a couple of years ago knows how muchfun that was to watch. Both represented their breedsnicely. The judges had no trouble evaluating each one ontheir own merits. This concept is really no different thanthe Best in Show competition of a dog show with addedperformance criteria.

So what is SHA anyway?by David Mikosz

LJR I Lyk it Lyk That showing a successful NSH.

Page 11: 2008/2009 Board of Directors - National Show Horse …nshregistry.org/Data/Files/NSH_Magazine_June09_with...2008/2009 Board of Directors David Mikosz, Chairman — Bluffton, SC Mike

Although comparatively small in size the NSHR has ahistory of taking a leadership role in the show horse world. We have also structured the SHA to be in a position ofhelping to shape the future of the Saddleseat discipline. The only real growth in equine competition organizationsrecently has been in discipline based organizations.

Often the saddleseat classes are some of the mostexciting and best spectated at breed shows. Presently theydo not have a voice of their own in the horse world ingeneral, nor do they have any organized outreachprograms. Even the more Saddleseat oriented breedorganizations are forced to be inclusive of multipledisciplines in an effort to help breeders market all theirproduce. This effort appears to undermine the ability topromote these most exciting horses by diluting the use oftime and promotional funds.

The SHA is perfectly positioned to pick up this torchand promote Saddleseat internationally as a discipline.

SHA has a very simple rule structure that can easily beapplied to all Saddleseat classes at any show.

Other than simple judging criteria for different classesthe only rules are that the horses are enrolled in SHA andthat the competitors adhere to any rules pertinent to theorganization governing the show. An example of thiswould be membership and compliance with USEF drugsand medication rules and rules governing conduct of theofficials and exhibitors. Most of us will agree that theaddition of rules on top of more rules has not served ourbreed shows well. Other than those basics exhibitors arefree to prepare their horses for their best advantage. Nodetailed shoeing or equipment rules. Unconventional oroverdone equipment or attire is evaluated at the judge’sdiscretion.

My personal vision of the SHA encompasses three areas. SHA could potentially become the Saddleseat discipline

arm of USEF. We are prepared to provide a standardizedjudging criteria and general framework allowing allbreeds of Saddleseat type horses to compete at the same

event utilizing the same set of simple rules. The alternativeto this would involve a cumbersome process of getting allthe different breeds that show Saddleseat type horses toagree on a compilation of their separate rules.

The theory is, keep it simple and have more fun. Myopinion is if we spent more time reaching out for newparticipants and less time nitpicking the rules we wouldhave a lot more fun and a healthier business.

Secondly, part of SHA’s mandate from the beginninginvolved the promotion of Saddleseat riding. AsSaddleseat is better promoted to the general publicawareness of it as an entry level avenue to horse showingwill increase. Since Saddleseat riding is our only trulyAmerican riding discipline, it deserves the opportunity toconnect with new and potential horse enthusiasts as theirprimary interest. Much too often riders and owners don’tfind Saddleseat until they have been caught up in one ofthe more visible disciplines. SHA can help change that.

Third is my idea for the SHA Saddleseat InternationalChampionship of the future. It will include a limitednumber of breed classes in each division. Then moving toa Final that puts one or two of the best from each divisionof each breed against one another in an internationallytelevised event. When you watch “best in show” dogcompetitions do you abandon your favorite breed justbecause it doesn’t win? Of course not. Any exposure tosaddleseat horses as an initial affiliation will inevitablyhelp all breeds attract new interest.

Of course there are several other issues that must beaddressed to reach this level of exposure. Attractingsponsors other than our current exhibitors and owners isone. This would obviously help with promotion and prizemoney. To do this we must develop an audience. Aligningwith charitable organizations could help. I have beeninvolved with two grassroots organizations that haveaccomplished this.

Carefully chosen classes and educated commentatorsare also part of the formula. Adding entertainment whileeducating will create excitement. I am looking forward todiscussing these elements with you in the near future.

In conclusion the future of SHA can go way beyondproviding a cutting edge venue for Saddleseat type horses.SHA has the potential to promote Saddleseat riding andshowing internationally. Finally it provides a frameworkthat will allow all Saddleseat enthusiasts from any breed toband together. Instead of being small voices within ourown breeds we can use the Show Horse Alliance to unifyus. SHA can be the vehicle we use to give the SaddleseatDiscipline a voice in the affairs that affect us all.

At this time the most important action you can take is toenroll your Saddleseat type horses in the Show HorseAlliance. Encourage your friends with Saddleseat typehorses to do the same and join you at Finals. I firmlybelieve that our best NSH’s are highly competitive andcould establish an advantage in SHA if they wouldsupport the classes currently offered at Finals. Thisparticipation will give competitors additional areas ofaccomplishment as well as supporting your Registryfinancially. Paulette B A DHH winning the same class a couple years later.

Showing horses is what the National Show Horse isall about. How much fun has been had by allduring the years since this all got started at Rock

Creek in 1984? Along the way the breeding rule changedand National Show Horses could be 25 percent Arabianblood. This caused a lot of controversy and many felt itwasn’t a good idea. However they were soon to see someof the best show horses ever. These horses were morepowerful than a lot of the horses that were 50 percent andmore versatile than a Saddlebred. They could easily showin more classes than most Saddlebreds do per show. Theyalso had longer show careers in many cases.

Showing horses is hard work and very rewarding. Tothose of us who breed horses and win with our producethere is little else that compares. Over the last 15 years ofshowing Saddlebreds, Arabians, and National ShowHorses I have watched many bloodlines within thedifferent breeds compete. After watching generations ofSaddlebreds and listening to many breeders I learned thatbreeding Saddlebreds is not as predictable as breedingArabians. The reasons for that are fairly simple. TheSaddlebred breed is not as old and not as pure so it standsto reason that certain characteristics, good and bad, canappear that are hard to explain. Arabian breeders have theadvantage of a long history. Over the years there have

been many times some of the older breeders haveexplained to me what bloodlines carry certain traits. Thosetraits may not always appear in that bloodline but whenyou see those traits they are always found in horses withthat bloodline. Breeding is genetics and the best pedigreesdo not always result in superior individuals. Sometimeseven a meager pedigree will result in a super star. That iscertainly not the norm. What does all this have to do withNational Show Horses?

The answer to that question just might surprise a lot ofpeople over the next several years. Breeding horses is notgetting cheaper so breeding good horses is imperative.Years ago a breeder could breed 100 mares a year and takechances to see if they were right. Land was cheaper sothere was not such a worry about what to do with the notso good foals. Today a breeder has to be more careful andhopefully beat the odds. Predictability is key whenchoosing a mare for a certain stallion.

I began to think that if Arabians are more predictablehorses with 25 percent Arabian blood should make goodbroodmares. I had shown a mare that was 75 percentSaddlebred and 25 percent Arabian from weanling to herlast class at age eight. This mare had never been bred. Many thought that there was no where to go but down. Inever really believed that. Her 25 percent Arabian bloodwent back to Arabians such as Hask, a National ChampionEnglish Pleasure horse, one of *Bask’s most beautiful sons.

Three years ago I was talking to Roxanne Hart of RoharaArabians. She was discussing finding mares for breeding

Half-Arabians. After several days of thinking about it Icalled her and told her of the mare I was thinking about. Iwas hoping she would agree with me about the pedigree.Roxanne Hart is one of the most respected breeders in theindustry. We did agree and the National Show Horsemare, Mariah now lives at her farm in Florida.

She is the dam of the QR Marq colt, Rohara Marq Twain. This amazing colt has already proven himself a star.Shown by Joe Alberti at the Tampa Thanksgiving Show hewon every class he went in, including the amateur classwith Roxanne on the lead. In Scottsdale Roxanne repeatedthat win and Rohara Marq Twain was the 2009 ScottsdaleChampion Half-Arabian Gelding Amateur to Handle. Hisdam is a National Show Horse.

This is proof the possibilities are endless if the rightpedigrees are crossed. That 25 percent blood can be whatmakes the next super star. Think about it. How could amare for example with DW Bonfire as her 25 percentArabian blood not produce a superior high performanceEnglish horse when bred to an Arabian of that discipline? How many super stars by that stallion have beenproduced out of Saddlebred mares? The result ispredictable already. These mares give you several morelines to choose from. The point to remember is that if youstudy the pedigree having a National Show Horse to breedjust might be an advantage.

Above and right: Mariah

2009 Annual High Point Awards ~ Enroll TODAY!

Did you know your National Show Horse earns more than prize money in NSH approved competition? Until recently, these points didn’t mean very much tothe average NSH participant, as they were tabulated only for determining sire rankings.

The NSHR Board of Directors has instituted a new program to recognize NSHs accumulating points in National Show Horse competition. An Annual High Pointaward will be given in the following divisions: Country Pleasure, Country Pleasure Driving, Pleasure Driving, Fine Harness, Three Gaited, Five Gaited, EnglishPleasure, Hunter Pleasure, Western Pleasure, Show Hack, Mare Halter, Stallion/Gelding Halter, Classic Country AOTR, Classic Country AOTD and Sport Horse.

Recognition of the winning horses will be published annually in National Show Horse as well as in the Finals Show Program and on the Registry’s web site(www.nshregistry.org).

How can you participate in the 2009 Annual High Point race? The rules are simple. Fill out the entry blank and send it along with the enrollment fee to theNSHR office. Points will only be calculated for those horses enrolled. Points may be earned during the period September 21, 2008 through September 19, 2009.

Now, to keep things interesting, each horse’s status in the race will be posted on the Registry’s web site and in each issue of National Show Horse. So fill outthe entry blank and SHOW YOUR HORSE!

Athick blanket of yellow roseswhips about the swan-neckof an exquisite grey

National Show Horse as a catchyChuck Berry tune twangs overhead. An electrified crowd is on their feetcheering on this beautiful animal.Jonny B Good is no stranger to thewinners’ circle having garneredmultiple Grand NationalChampionships. On his back sitsPatti Carleton grinning ear-to-ear,relishing this moment, riding thehorse she bred and raised.

Under the guidance of BobPhillips of Victory Lane Stable,Jonny B Good has achieved anundefeated show career.

Patti was not always a big star. Asa youngster her involvement wascentered around her uncle’s ponyfarm. Much to her chagrin and heruncle’s delight, she was adept attaming and training his wild ponies. In those days “you rode” what youcaught and Patti had a knack withthe ponies. Just as her current catchwas finished, her uncle would find ahappy buyer for her project.

After a few heartbreaks, Pattibecame determined to buy a pony of

her own and in1955, used her lifesavings to becomethe proud owner ofher first pony,“Spunky”. Togetherthey began their showcareer at 4-H and statelevel pony shows. Pattireminisces, that Spunky“wasn’t too good at trail!”

By high school she had out-grownponies, so she bought her first horse,a Saddlebred/Quarter Horse mare. This was her foundation broodmare. At the time, she didn’t have a trailer,so she rode the horse home.

Not content to just sit back andride, Patti began breeding ponies ingrade school. She quickly realizedthe value, and her personal delight,in a good saddle-horse. She was acontroversial pioneer in breedingstrictly for the National Show HorseRegistry.

Initially, she started with thetraditional Arabian/Saddlebredcross, producing renowned winnersincluding: Supreme Decision, DreamOn, HA King of Hearts, RazzleDazzle, B-Bop Baby, and ProsContender. She took her passion to awhole new level, breeding herNational Show Horse mares back toNational Show Horse andSaddlebred stallions, producing tento 15 foals a year. She even stood theNational Show Horse stud, DreamOn, who sired Multi GrandChampions Dream On An On andDream On Dreamer. Her mostsuccessful saddlebred dam-linesincorporated the bloodlines of WingCommander and Supreme Sultan.Just recently, Patti has reappeared inthe show ring on one of her“babies”.

Coming from multiplegenerations of horse people, it is nosurprise that Patti should be anaccomplished equestrian andbreeder. She remembers that hergreat grandfather and grandfatherwere both involved with racehorses. She was born horse-crazy, and evenas an infant they found the only wayto keep her quiet was to put her on ahorse’s back. Her parents were herbiggest supporters and helped herunderstand the commitment ofhorse ownership.

When not horsing around, Patti“loves to do everything”. Fromgardening to genealogy and learningto use a computer, Patti is alwaysopen for a challenge. After an eightyear hiatus, Patti is actively breedingagain. She currently owns 17 horses, with her most recent additionhaving arrived in April.

Lucky that Patti had the gumptionto break away from the norm andfollow her instinct to breed “goodrideable trotting horses”. Not onlydid she have the courage to facecriticism from her contemporaries, she also possessed a revolutionaryvision, one we are all able to enjoytoday. I watch as Jonny B Goodmakes his victory pass. What anincredible athlete!

I t has been fifteen years since the first class of StallionRow Jackpot weanlings trotted through the in gate atthe Springfield Fairgrounds. Since that day in 1994,

the Registry has paid out over $389,000 in a commitmentto its futurity program, the backbone of any registry’sincentive to breed. Throughout the years we haveexpanded our program from paying out prize money tothe top five to paying out prize money to the top ten, incorporating the amateurs and adding money to jackpotsas the weanlings get older and start their performancecareer.

This issue highlights ourfirst seven winners, andupdates their activities sincewinning the Jackpot.

1995 was the year whenAbraxus~ trotted in with TomScott. Bred by MisdeeMilligan, Abraxus~ is byHeritage Emir++. That yearhe took home $6,840.Currently Abraxus~ lives inNew York, with the MorrellFamily, showing in bothEnglish Pleasure and Driving. He currently holds the 11thspot on the NSH Ring ofFame with a lifetime payouttotaling more than $38,000.

1996 brought the Night ofRoses offspring NouveO’Riche~. Bred by Clarke andKaren Vesty and shown byClarke, Nouve O’Riche~ wasawarded $4,545. NouveO’Riche~ is now under thecare of Lindsay Rinehart andcontinues his show career. Atlast year’s NSH Finals he wasunanimous National ReserveChampion in both CountryAmateur 18 and over and theAmateur Country Grand Championship. He was also the2003 U.S. National Champion Amateur Country 18-39,and has proven himself as an equitation horse with TopTens in both Saddle Seat Equitation and UPHA ChallengeCup. Nouve O’Riche~ is a member of the Ring of Famewith winnings over $10,000.

Abbey Rose~, also by Night of Roses, was our 1997winner of $8,415. Over the years, she has been shown inboth Three-Gaited, and Five-Gaited. Currently, she is

enjoying life as a broodmare at Ricigliano Farms, andproduced Unanimous National Champion Gelding,American Style RF (by Magnum). With over $17,000 inprize money, Abbey Rose~ is also a member of the Ring ofFame.

In 1998 it was Do Alittle Dance that had people dancingin their seats. Bred by Richard and Kari Lundin by theirArabian Stallion, NDL Flashdance+/, Do Alittle Dancewent to the winner’s circle with Troy White to pick up$6,750. I am sorry to say that Do Alittle Dance’s showcareer was cut short by his untimely death.

Following in her brother’shoof steps, Dance Girl Dancewas crowned 1999’s winner.Once again Troy and theLundins made it to thewinner’s circle for the $8,203check.

2000 brought some flavor tothe show ring when PeanutBuster Parfait took home theroses and $6,030 for RobertRatte and Tony Steiner. PeanutBuster Parfait is by theNational Champion NSH sire,Sting Ray~. Currently she isshowing in the Midwest, winning Top Fives in bothCountry Pleasure and Halter.

2001 was my first NSHFinals and I can rememberseeing EC Brass Prince~ trot inat the end of the lead withTerry Holmes. Everyone at theshow knew he was the winnerand he was, taking home$5,737 for the El Camino Ranchand Faydelle Schott. The son ofPain In The Brass~, EC BrassPrince is a showstopper. Overhis lifetime, he has won over$23,000 and is currently #33 inthe Ring of Fame. Continuing

his show career, he has come back and garnered thechampionship in Stallion Halter four or five times, andwas named Unanimous Champion just last year. He isshown in Country Pleasure driving by Lotta Shafer. Whenhe is not in the ring, he is in the breeding shed at ShaferArabians.

Watch for our next issue to follow the lives of the nextseven Stallion Row Jackpot Champions.
