Dear Friends of Maxwell and Molly’s Closet, June has been a very busy and exciting month. We have finished our first suc-cessful Rate-A-Pet contest on WSUS. You may place your pet and/or vote for pets by going to their web site at: wsus1023.com. The pets are beautiful and we are very proud to be the sponsor.

Newton Day was a tremen-dous success as was our “Just For Fun” Dog Show. All received prizes and all are winners in our eyes.

As we have all witnessed in June, the weather can be very changeable — steaming hot, cool, torrential rain, hail, thunder and very dan-gerous lightening. This leads me to a discussion of weather being a potential killer of pets. Humans have

a built-in air conditioner, namely sweat. Dogs do not. Panting helps to cool a dog down but it has limited ef-fectiveness. Being left in a hot, closed up house or (shame on you!) hot car, or being taken for a strenuous walk on hot pavement in hot sun can lead to heat ex-haustion. Obese dogs, or those with pre-existing ill-ness, large breeds or breeds with short noses (Boston Terriers, Pugs, Bulldogs and Pekingese) are all at in-creased risk.

A dog showing signs of heat exhaustion should be imme-diately bathed or hosed down with cool, not cold water. It should not be wrapped in a wet towel as this traps heat in the body. Do not use ice as this con-stricts blood vessels thus re-ducing the ability to release heat. Take an animal to the veterinarian who is showing

signs of severe weakness or collapse.

Tips For Playing It Cool

These helpful tips are from Cornell University’s “Dog Watch”: 1. Never leave an animal in a car in the heat—it could expire within 10 minutes. 2. When leaving your dog home, leave on a fan or a/c, crack windows for cross breeze and make sure all screens are intact. 3. Avoid over-exercising on hot days. 4. Keep animals out of the sun between 12 & 3pm. 5. Keep plenty of cool drinking water throughout the house. Bring jugs when traveling. 6. Dogs must have a shady spot to rest when out-side, including on the beach. Provide an umbrella, shady tree or cool dog house.

Dear Friends of Maxwell and Molly’s Closet, This has been an exciting first year of business. S u c c e s s c a n b e measured in varied ways and in each one, the Closet’s first year has been bri l l iant. Our business continues to grow each and every month which validates our rationale: Pet owners are interested in having products of the highest quality with caring, reliable service. To serve you better, our product line continues to expand as great new products come on the market and customers have requests which we can fill. Two such products added to our store are by Ark Naturals for dental care:

Breath-less Chewable Brushless Toothpaste has a pa ten ted toothpaste center which controls plaque, tartar and bad breath-causing bacteria. Pets think they are receiving a treat and we think their fresh breath is a treat! Also at the closet is Breath-less Fizzy Plaque-Zapper which is a powder to be sprinkled into the pet’s water. It controls plaque and tartar and zaps harmful bacteria! What could possibly be easier than these two n e w a l l - n a t u r a l products? They contain nothing artificial: no wheat, wheat gluten, corn, soy, sugar, yeast or chlorine ingredients.

Only the best for your pets! Jo in ing our insect repellant products are the Dirty and Harry Go Ahead Make My Day Spa pro-ducts. The shampoo, conditioner and spray include such natural ingredients as: aloe vera, lanolin and citronella oil and they have been first tested on humans! Come to historic Spring Street and visit us to celebrate our f i rs t anniversary, as you are the reason why we are so excited to begin Year Two! Take advantage of our sales, see our new products and help us rejoice! A store is only fantastic because it has fantastic customers!

It’s Anniversary Time!

New Summer Hours and Events: The stores on Spring Street will be open late on Fridays instead of Thursdays from now on. The Closet will be open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday 10-6, Friday 10-7 and Sunday 11-4. 2nd Saturday: On August 9, we will be open from 10 am to 8 pm. This month there are many events featuring arts & entertainment, shopping and dining — all with a Summer Blues theme. Dear Friends of The Closet,

We at the Closet hope that a Summer filled with fun times and lots of outdoor exercise was had by all!

Over the past months we have discussed puppy care, dental care, outdoor precautions and the use of holistic supplements, sprays and shampoos to control insects. Today we will d i scuss “O ld i es Bu t Goodies!” Many of the same issues humans face are challenges for our pets. Weight gain, incontinence, lack of muscle strength, strength of teeth, sight and hearing are a few of these issues. Maxwell and Molly’s Closet has the products to aid your old trusted friend.

Origen Senior Formula is loaded with government inspected fresh chicken, turkey, whole eggs and wild-caught fish with moderate calories. Fresh fruits, vegetables and botanicals support the immune system and promote a vibrant coat. The reduction of calories from diet and grain-filled treats will help maintain a

healthy weight thus aiding mature muscles and joints. Our treat cupboard at the Closet is filled with healthy, o r g a n i c t r e a t s w i t h wholesome goodness!

For aching joints we carry a variety of products with glucosamine and chondroitin which may help replenish cartilage and lubricate joints. Ark Natural’s “Joint Rescue” and “Joint Oats 4 Dogs”, Grizzly Salmon Oil and Sea Mobility Treats are some of the products designed to improve mobility. Food and water bowl stands might also be considered to allow eating and drinking without neck st rain. A wel l cushioned bed which retains its density is important to cushion tired joints. Our beds are the best — plus they are machine washable and dryable. We also carry a line of hygienic panties for the gals and bands for the guys who have bladder retention issues so that there will be no need to reprimand for that which they no longer can control.

Please also remember our wonderful products to care

for those very important teeth. We have Cain & Able’s toothpaste, brushes and finger brushes, Ark N a t u r a l ’ s B r u s h - l e s s Toothpaste and Plaque Zapper and Petzlife Gel and Spray. To keep our seniors jumping for joy, Planet Dog has introduced the “Old Souls” line of toys which were designed for older muscles and teeth. High contrast colors, double soft, double minty and uniquely stretchy are reasons your dear buddy will love these toys!

So visit the Closet to maintain the health and happiness of your pet no matter what stage of life he is in!

We thank you for your continued trust in our products and our genuine concern for the health and happiness of your furry family!

— Bonnie

Dear Friends of Maxwell and Molly’s Closet,

As we enter the holiday season and I look back on our first year of business, I am so thankful for the wonderful people and pets we have come to know. It has been our true pleasure to provide you with the very best the pet industry has to offer.

In our last newsletter of the year, I wanted to share with you some opinions I read pertaining to “Petiquette”. I believe I have on occasion broken a few rules.

First rule is canines must be specifically invited to parties and, if invited, should be p r o p e r l y g r o o m e d , exercised and all personal business taken care of before arrival at the event.

Let your pet not be called a “party crasher” or “party pooper”.

The work environment is another area to be sensitive to others’ needs. Pets who are aggressive to other dogs or strangers might make for a less productive w o r k e n v i r o n m e n t . Conversely, a well-behaved d o g c a n i n c r e a s e productivity. A study done at

Wilkes University found that stroking a pet increased a person’s ability to fight germs and reduced the body’s stress level, thereby making for more productive workers.

Another area to consider is walking on sidewalks as they can be dangerous when using extra long leashes. “Clotheslining” your neighbor or having holiday shoes covered in pooh will not encourage social invitations.

With good training, attention to the feelings and comfort of others, it is possible that we will see an increase in the places where our “furry babies” are welcome.

However, remember that your babies are always welcome at the Closet.
