freshman seasons last year and improved tre-mendously over the course of the outdoor track season. Both will challenge the upperclassmen in trying to break into the top-five. The upperclassmen are the team’s top five returnees and should hold that position this season. The seniors will be looked upon to make improvements in their times early in the

season for the team to set the standard for success. The young Bulldog team will be faced with a challeng-ing schedule this fall. After opening up the season at the Eye Opener in Spartanburg, S.C., which will be the same course as the SoCon Champi-onships later in the season, the Bulldogs will head up to the Salty Sea Dog Invitational at the United States Naval Acad-emy in Annapolis, Md. on Sept. 13. The Cadets host the 28th Annual Citadel Invitational on Sept. 27 before heading to Titusville, Fla. for a Friday eve-ning race. The Citadel will head to Rock Hill, S.C. for a quad meet with Furman, College of Charleston and host Winthrop

on Oct. 18 before heading back to Spartan-burg for the SoCon Championships. Select run-ners will also compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Nov. 15 hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Previewing Women’s Cross Country With a pair of juniors leading the way and a trio of seniors not far behind, hopes are high for The Citadel’s 2008 women’s cross country team. Improvement from last year’s record finish in the Southern Confer-ence Championships should be evident if the team can avoid any major injuries this sea-son as this year’s team has no letterwinners lost. The junior duo of Katheryn Gatewood and Natalie Wolin combined for all of the top finishes last season, including the 2007 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. Both ju-niors are expected to continue to set the pace for the team this year. A trio of academic seniors in Megan Jenkins (a redshirt junior, athleti-cally), Sarah Strickland and team captain Erin Ritter should round out the top five for the wom-en’s team this season. All three are expected to improve their times upon last season and will be looked upon for leadership in guiding the team to a strong finish in the SoCon Championships at Wof-ford on Nov. 1. Suzanne Gay and Sarah Stierwalt, both sophomores, showed promise in their

to the 8k course. Chris Morgan is another freshman that should challenge the top seven runners this sea-son. Morgan changed his technique to give him longer strides and improved strength which led to a much better senior year in high school. P.J. Wasilchak posted some great times over the

summer in individual training and is a work horse who hails from a hilly terrain adn who will take advantage of the flat Lowcountry geography. The young Bulldog team will be faced with a challenging schedule this fall. After opening up the season at the Eye Open-er in Spartanburg, S.C., which will be the same course as the SoCon Championships later in the season, the Bulldogs will head up to the Salty Sea Dog Invitational at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. on Sept. 13. The Cadets host the 28th Annual Citadel Invitational on Sept. 27 before heading to Titusville, Fla. for a Friday evening race. The Citadel will head to Rock Hill, S.C. for a quad meet

with Furman, College of Charleston and host Winthrop on Oct. 18 before heading back to Spartanburg for the SoCon Championships. Select runners will also compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Nov. 15 hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Previewing Men’s Cross Country With five of last year’s top 10 runners return-ing for the 2008 season, The Citadel men’s cross country team is optimistic about the coming season. Juniors Brendan Kight and Alex Anderson will be looked upon to guide a young team in 2008. Kight already has two well-run seasons under his belt while Anderson, a transfer from Florida Interna-tional, posted some great times in his first year at The Citadel. Zach Johnson will be hoping to trans-fer a breakthrough outdoor track season into a successful cross country season this fall. Johnson made the finals of the 800m in last year’s track championships and ran a personal record 800m time of 1:53.87 at Clemson. Following a good freshman season, a trio of sophomores will have to continue to improve for the Bulldogs to make an impact in the Southern Conference this year. Chris Fallis, Joseph Tkach and Zach Yereb all had impres-sive performances in their fresh-man season last fall and are expected to maintain consistent performances this year. Frank Dioguardi will lead a freshman class of six runners this fall. Dioguardi is expected to be in the top seven of the Bulldog runners this season as he brings a 5k time of 16:29 from high school with him. Hail-ing from Massapequa, N.Y., Dioguardi is used to hilly courses and the flatter terrain of the South Carolina Lowcountry should help in his adjustment

Men’s Results are 8k times; Women’s Results are 5k times

NCAA Regional WeekendThree runners from The Citadel traveled to the Derby City on Nov. 10 with all three posting personal record times as the Bulldogs competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Louisville, Ky. Sophomore Katheryn Gatewood led the way in the 6k race with a time of 23:40. Gatewood’s time of 23:40 is the sec-ond-fastest 6k time in school history. Gatewood placed 165th out of the 225 runners competing at the NCAA meet.

Sophomore Natalie Wolin ran 24:01 in the race, finish-ing 183rd. That mark is the fourth-fastest time in the Bulldog record books. Junior Sarah Strickland, who ran 25:03 at the 2005 NCAA Southeast Regional Cham-pionships in Greenville, N.C., finished the 2007 race in 24:15 as she finished 195th.

Southern Conference SuccessThe Citadel’s cross country teams both finished eighth at the 2007 Southern Conference Championships as sev-eral runners posted season and personal-best marks. The men’s team had personal-best marks set by three of their top four runners, including top finisher sophomore Brendan Kight who ran 26:48 to finish 30th. Freshman Nathan Jackson finished third on the team and 47th overall with a personal record time of 27:26 while freshman Zach Yereb also posted a personal-best time with a time of 27:38, another personal record mark.

Lowcountry DominationThe Citadel Cross Country teams dominated the Low-country Invitational on Oct. 13 as both the women and the men claimed the team title. Sophomore Natalie Wo-lin won the women’s individual title and led the Bulldog women for the fourth time in five meets, while the men’s

trio of Brendan Kight, Daniel Knight and Rob Isaac fin-ished 2-3-4.

Muddy Day at DisneyDespite extremely wet and muddy conditions, The Cita-del cross country team recorded a successful day at the Walt Disney World Classic as the men’s team fin-ished 12th and the women’s team placed 14th out of 44 teams. Sophomores led both teams with the second-year Cadets finishing as the top two runners for The Citadel in both the men’s and women’s races.

Sophomore Daniel Knight led the men with a season-breakout performance, running a personal record 26:57 as he finished 47th out of over 300 runners. De-spite running in ankle-deep mud, sophomore Katheryn Gatewood still ran an impressive 19:49, placing 70th out of the 366-member field in the women’s race.

Banner Day at The Citadel InviteBrendan Kight set a personal record by almost half a minute while Natalie Wolin and Sarah Strickland just missed out on setting personal records of their own as The Citadel posted a banner day at the 27th Annual Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park. Robert Killian ‘04 led the alumni team, Team Mule, with a third-place finish in the men’s 8k race.

The Citadel Places Second in Bulldog DualsThe Citadel women placed second in the Bulldog Duals for the second consecutive year while the men’s team finished second in 2007. Sophomore Natalie Wolin led the Bulldogs for the second time in the season, running the 5k course in 19:24, finishing fourth. The men’s team was led by Brendan Kight as the sophomore ran the 5k distance in 16:46.

The 28th Annual Citadel InvitationalJames Island County Park l James Island, S.C.

Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008

One of the premier cross country meets in South Carolina, The Citadel Invitational is annually held on the last weekend in September at James Island County Park and is a showcase of cross country talent from the South. The first invitational was held at Middleton Plan-tation in 1981 and was a 5k race for the women and a 10k for the men. The first women’s team champion in Division I was Davidson College (there were no Di-vision II women’s team entered the first four years). The Division I men’s champion was Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University) and for Division II was USC Spartanburg (now USC Upstate). In 1982 the race was moved to Charles Towne Landing and was run in the birth place of Charleston for the next 19 years until it moved to James Island County Park in 2001. The 1989 race was moved to the campus of Francis Marion College in Florence as the course at Charles Towne Landing was totally destroyed by Hurricane Hugo just two weeks prior to the race. The women’s Division I meet and course record at Charles Towne Landing is held by Gail Pennachio of Furman University with a time of 17:21. The Division II record is held by Sylvia Sanchez of Florida Com-munity College with a time of 18:31. On the men’s

side, the Division I 10k record is 30:48 held by Al Dunn from Baptist College and by Mitch Powell from Francis Marion College for Division II in a time of 31:31. The men’s race distance was shortened to 8k in 1985. Seamus Powers from East Tennessee State Uni-versity holds the Division I course and meet record of 23:51, established in 1993. The men’s Division II course and meet record is held by Jay Jones of Pembroke State (now UNC-Pembroke) with a time of 24:45. High schools were invited to participate in 1995 with Heathwood Hall winning the girls division and Sumter high school winning the boys. Joyce Peebles of Pendleton won the inaugural girls race in a time of 20:45 while Mike Wilson from North Myrtle Beach won the boys race in 17:03. The course record for the high school girl’s race at Charles Towne Landing was set in 2000 as Jocelyn Veit of Lexington High School ran 19:17. The boys course and meet record was set by David Patterson of Cardinal Gibbon’s High School in 1996 with a time of 15:55. The inaugural races at James Island County Park were run on the “Lake Course” and move to the “Meadow Course” the following year.

The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college with the mission of educating principled lead-ers through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through The Citadel Graduate College (CGC) in the evening.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Graduates of The Citadel say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives.

With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military col-lege program outside the service academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market.

The Citadel Graduate College, which is noted for The Citadel ex-

cellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,700 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong commitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction.

Corps of Cadets ...All undergraduate students at The Citadel are members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period.

Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the bar-racks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in team-work, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation.

Academic Programs...Because of the strength of the academic program, The Citadel has repeatedly been rated as a top regional insti-tution in the annual rankings issued by U.S. News and World Report. The quality of the education at The Citadel combined with the availability of financial aid, the credentials of the faculty and the graduation rate earned the institution the citation of Best College Value in the South in 2007. With more than 80 percent of its students returning each year, The Citadel enjoys one of the best retention records in the country. The Citadel’s 14 aca-

demic departments offer five bachelor’s degrees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas and specialist degrees in two areas.

Cadet-Student-Athletes...The Citadel leads South Carolina with the highest four-year Graduation Rate at 62.4 percent, while the national average is only 30 precent.

Cadets receive gold stars for earning a 3.7 GPA or higher. The stars are worn on both sides of the colar of their dress uniforms and above the left pocket of their summer leave uniforms.

The Citadel ranks No. 3 nationally among public colleges and universities in the Carnegie classification in the per-centage of students who graduate in four years. That category includes colleges with master’s level programs.

The Princeton Review for 2006 named The Citadel School of Business one of the nation’s 237 best business programs.

Among South Carolina’s public colleges and universities, The Citadel has the highest four-year graduation rate for athletes. More than 90 percent of cadet-student-athletes who have exhausted their four years of eligibility earn a diploma.

The Princeton Review for 2006 placed The Citadel in its top tier of academic institutions according to an aca-demic ranking that measures how hard students work and how much they get back for their efforts. The ranking considered such factors as hours students study outside of class, quality of the student body, class size, student assessment of professors and other resources.

The Citadel Graduate College...The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering nationally accredited bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the well-known Citadel academic excellence in a civilian environment. The CGC offers 20 graduate programs with concen-trations in education, psychology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally accredited MBA pro-gram in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The CGC also offers three undergraduate evening programs in business and engineering. The Citadel is the only college in South Carolina that offers un-dergraduate civil and electrical engineering degrees in the evening.

Alumni...Generations of Citadel graduates have served their nation, their state and their community with distinction. The Citadel graduates men and women with alert minds and sound bodies, who value honor, integrity, loyalty and patriotism, and who accept the responsibilities that accompany leadership. The Citadel remains a stronghold of duty, self-discipline and high ideals in a changing American society.

Band of GoldThe Citadel Ring:

Symbolizing Unity Between Graduates

Traditionally received during Parents’ Weekend by first class cadets, The Citadel ring symbolizes honor and the unity between The Citadel graduates. Worn proudly by alumni of all ages, cadets look forward to the day that they will be able to wear this band of gold with pride.

The ring has symbolized outstanding ac-complishments both by the Corps of Ca-dets and South Carolina. Perhaps the most popular feature of the ring is the “Star of the West”, which commemorates the fir-ing on a Union supply steamer by a detach-ment of Citadel cadets in January, 1861. This action was the powder keg which set off the War Between the States.

Every aspect of the ring is symbolic of the history and tradition of the Corps of Ca-dets from the Mexican War through both World Wars, to the present day. The Cita-del is a military college and the leader-ship, courage and integrity found in good officers is embodied by the sword, found on the left shank of the ring. Crossing the sword is the rifle, the symbol of the in-fantry. Of equal importance in this world

of political aggrandizement and perpetual military conflict are the concepts of freedom acquired and maintained only through a willingness to fight for it, represented by the rifle surmounted by the oak leaves of toughness and victory blessed by peace, represented by the laurel wreath.

On the right shank of the ring are found the United States and South Carolina flags, which de-pict the unity of the state and federal government. The cannon balls at the bottom of this shank in-dicate the continuing link between the Old Citadel on Marion Square and the Greater Citadel. When the college moved to its present location, the Civil War cannon balls piled before the Old Citadel were left behind. The oval crest has a reproduction of the Palmetto tree in its background. Aside from representing the state tree of South Carolina, the Palmetto symbolizes a cadet-trained regiment of infantry that fought in the Mexican War and it represents a fort, built of Palmetto logs, that repelled a large British invasion fleet during the Revolutionary War. The two oval shields at the base of the tree are replicas of the state seals.

“The Citadel is a place of pride and tradition. A place where the stan-dards are high, the discipline is strong and leaders are born. The men and women of this institution represent a sense of honor and accomplishment. And I am proud to be with you today.”... “in all that is to come, I know the graduates of The Citadel will bring credit to America, to the military and to this great institution. In the words of your school song, you will go where you’ve always gone... ‘in the paths our fathers showed us. Peace and Honor, God and Counrty -- we will fight for thee.’”The Honorable George W. Bush43rd President of the United States

“Without question, The Citadel experience opened a world of opportunity for me. I can think of no better preparation for the things I have done or hope to do.”Dr. Harvey W. Schiller, ‘60Former Executive Director, U.S. Olympic Committee

“...I read this friendly advice in the book: ‘When you receive an order, carry it out to the best of your ability. Never argue or offer suggestions which you think might be better. This is not in your best interest.’ Well, it seems to me that The Citadel has a few things to teach the Cabinet and the Executive Branch, too! In fact, maybe we should just put the whole federal government through cadet training!”The Honorable Ronald Reagan40th President of the United States

“What you tolerate, you define. And that is what makes this institution so unique. Regardless of class or cadet rank, The Citadel graduate more than anything else carries the reputation for integrity that is unsurpassed by any institution in his nation.”The Honorable Steve Buyer, ‘80U.S. Congressman

“At the center of The Citadel education, that rock that an-chors it’s soul, is the honor system. I found the honor system simple and profound; majestic and life-changing: A cadet does not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate those who do.”Pat Conroy, ‘67Award-winning author

“Citadel graduates have become successfull leaders in both the public and the private sectors, as well as having been in-volved in every American military conflict since the Mexican war. Thanks to its effective teaching tecniques, The Citadel has earned an enviable reputation as one of the best public colleges in the United States, and there is not a better mili-tary school anywhere in this nation than The Citadel.”Robert “Bob” DoleU.S. Senator

Honor“A Cadet does not Lie, Cheat, or Steal,

nor Tolerate those who do.”

The Honor Code is fairly simple. This code, while simple, offers the key to living and maintaining an honorable life. Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activities. These core values of honor and integrity are exactly the values which allow Cita-del cadets and alumni to improve their organizations and their communities.

Honor is the most cherished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corpo-rate-scandal society, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve excellence in the edu-

cation of principled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encom-passes all aspects of cadet life, from academic integrity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwritten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unanimously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believ-ing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives.

Cadet PrayerAlmighty God, the source of light and strength, we implore Thy blessing on this our beloved insti-

tution, that it may continue true to its high purposes.

Guide and strengthen those upon whom rests the authority of government; enlighten with wis-dom those who teach and those who learn; and grant to all of us that through sound learning and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given to

unselfish service, loyal to every obligation of life and above all to Thee.

Preserve us faithful to the ideals of The Citadel, sincere in fellowship, unswerving in duty, finding joy in purity and confidence through a steadfast faith.

Grant to each one of us, in his/her own life, a humble heart, a steadfast purpose, and a joyful hope, with a readiness to endure hardship and suffer if need be, that truth may prevail among us and that

Thy will may be done on earth. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Cadet CreedI will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of The Citadel and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically tough, and morally straight, and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be.

Gallantly will I show the world that I am a well-trained cadet. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress, and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.

And under no circumstances will I ever bring discredit to The Citadel and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

Graduates of The Citadel succeed because they know what it takes to meet a challenge in any field: patience and persistence, discipline and determination, teamwork and hardwork.

The Citadel emphasizes athletic competition as a way to build leaders, learn teamwork and prepare for life’s challenges. Physical fitness represents a vital component of every Cadet’s experience. All Cadets take physical education courses and participate in one or more of our 28 intramural sports, 15 intercollegiate club sports or 16 NCAA Division I athletic programs.

Graduates of The Citadel benefit from an invaluable lifelong association with other alumni. Talk to any graduate of The Citadel, and you will sense firsthand the powerful force of the strong alumni network.

Sir, Yes, Sir • Sir, No, SirSir, No Excuse, Sir

“...three permissible knob answers: ‘Sir, yes, sir’ and ‘Sir, no, sir’ and—I liked this third one best of all—’Sir, no excuse, sir.’ By golly, I think, we ought to send the entire U.S. Congress down here to learn answer number three.”

The Honorable Ronald Reagan40th President of the United States

May 15, 1993

Whatever their major, all cadets will graduate with a “dual degree” in leadership. They learn about attention to detail, respect, time management, and discipline.

“Leadership is about integrity, trust and people. The Citadel, with its mission to prepare graduates to be pricipled leaders, is all about integrity, trust and people. There is no question in my mind that, had I not attended The Citadel to learn these values, I would not have come close to achieving what success I have been fortunate enough to achieve.”
