CROSSMeet The Coaches

A familiar face returned to direct the Eastern Michi-gan University women’s track and field and cross coun-try programs on July 27, 2006. That date marks the beginning of the Sue Parks coaching era. A former EMU track great, a member of the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame and the daughter of legendary men’s track coach Bob Parks, enters her third season as the head coach of the women’s cross country and track programs in 2008-09. Rebuilding a team is no easy task, but veteran coach Parks is up to the task. Inn three seasons at the helm of the Eagle track and cross country programs, things are beginning to look bright for the Green and White. Under Parks, the Eagles have made dramatic im-provements, including in 2008 when a dozen or so members of the team propelled the squad to seventh and ninth place finishes, respectively, at the indoor and outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships.

Currently, Parks serves as the second Vice Presi-dent of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coaches Association Executive Commit-tee, which is in charge of all NCAA cross country proposals. In that post, she is responsible for direct-ing the regional representatives and presiding over the national meeting at the NCAA Championship. Prior to returning to EMU as the head coach of the women’s track program, Parks enjoyed tremendous suc-cess in a 12-year tenure at Ball State from 1994-2006, winning eight Mid-American Conference titles and finishing runner-up 10 times in track and cross country. She was named MAC Women’s Coach of the Year a total of eight times, three for indoor track (1996,1998,2001), four for outdoor track (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001) and one for cross country (2003). In addition, she was se-lected as an NCAA Regional Coach of the Year in indoor and outdoor track in 1998. Her 2002 cross country team

became just the third MAC team to ever qualify for the NCAA Championship when it accomplished the feat. From 1990-94 she was an assistant cross country and track coach for both the men’s and women’s pro-grams at the University of Arizona. Her UA women’s cross country squads placed 11th, 14th, and 12th at the NCAA Championship in 1991, 1992 and 1993, respectively. Her 1993 cross country team won the NCAA District 8 championship. She was also named NCAA District 8 Coach of the Year after the 1993 cross country season. During her tenure at Arizona she coached seven All-Americans in women’s cross country and track, including the 1994 5,000-meter champion in the NCAA indoor track championship. Before heading to Arizona, Parks was the head women’s cross country coach and assistant women’s track coach at Michigan State Univer-sity from 1988-90. She was graduate assistant coach for the EMU men’s track team from 1987-88. From 1984-87, she was the women’s head cross country coach and women’s assistant track coach at the University of Michigan. She coached eight All-Americans in cross country and was selected as the Big Ten Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1986. Her other coaching stints include serving as the head women’s track coach at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard in 1982 and the head women’s cross country coach at Ann Arbor Huron High School from 1979-83. Parks is certainly no stranger to EMU and the Ypsilanti area. She was raised in Ypsilanti and at-

tended Ypsilanti High School where she was an outstanding cross country and track competitor. She was a Michigan high school champion and former record holder in the 800 meters and also competed for the United States in the Pan American Games. Parks went on to graduate from EMU with a bach-elor’s degree in 1980 and a master’s degree in 1988. While an undergraduate, Parks was a MAC cross country invitational champion in 1976, 1977 and 1978 and was also an Olympic Trials qualifier. She competed against the USSR both indoors, on the American record setting two-mile relay team, and outdoors, as a high jumper, winning a U.S. high jump title. She was elected to the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. Her father, Bob Parks, was the head men’s track and field and head men’s cross country coach at EMU for 34 years, from 1967-2000.

John Guarino enters his second season as the assistant coach for the women’s track and field program in 2008-09. His responsibilities include coaching the sprinters and jumpers, and he will also serve as the recruiting coordinator. During the 2008 season, Guarino guided a slew of athletes to numerous successes, highlighted by Janice Keppler’s MAC Indoor pole vault Championship title. Keppler also finished second outdoors. The 4x400-meter relay team of Dejaa Shearer, Beverly Elcock, Jasmine Gates and Beverly Elcock finished third at the 2008 Indoor and Outdoor MAC Championship. Five of his athletes earned top-five MAC finishes, including Brittany Lockhart (pentathlon), Andrea Wheeler (60-meter hurdles), Shearer (400 meters) and Gates (high jump). Guarino came to EMU from the University of Central Florida. While at UCF, he coached four athletes in five events to the NCAA Regional meet. He also coached six different athletes to All-Conference USA honors including the 4x400-meter relay team in 2006. In addition, he also coached Ann Larsen, a three-time U.S. National qualifier in the high jump. He also coached four Atlantic Sun Conference champions and 10 all-conference honorees in just one year. Prior to his stint at UCF, he spent one year as a graduate assistant coach at Florida State University. While there, he helped develop the female sprinters and the men’s 800-meter athletes. Before going to FSU, Guarino served as head coach at his alma mater, St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and led them to six consecutive state titles from 1998-2003. In 2000, the team was ranked second in the country, and for his efforts, he received the Florida Girl’s Track Coach of the Year award four times. While at St. Thomas Aquinas, he coached Sanya Richards, the junior American record holder in the 400 meters and an Olympic gold medalist in the 4x400-meter relay. Under Guarino, Richards had a personal high school best 400 meter time of 50.69 and won the silver medal at the 2002 World Junior Championships. At St. Thomas, he coached four high school All-Americans, a national championship relay team (4x200-meters) and state champions in 11 different events. He also

coached the boys and girls cross country teams and the Ultimate Flyers Track Club each of his years. Guarino graduated with a Bachelor’s of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1993 and then went on to receive a Master of Sports Administration in 2004 from Florida State. While at Georgia Tech, he competed for two years as a 400 and 800-meter runner. He was a four-year letter winner in track and field and cross country at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He holds a USA Track and Field Level II certification in sprints, hurdles, relays and jumps. Guarino currently resides in Ypsilanti.

Gary Bastien is in his second season at Eastern Michigan University as the throwing coach, teaching the shot put, jav-elin, discus, hammer and indoor weight events. He also helps the heptathletes and decathletes with their throwing technique. The 2007-08 season saw several of his charges make dramatic improvements, including Gerald Gersham, who was an NCAA Regional qualifier. Gersham also finished second at the Mid-American Conference outdoor track and field championship. In 2006-07 he was asked to return to the EMU program as an as-sistant coach responsible for the throwing events. Though away from the national collegiate coaching scene for years, last year he was one of only two coaches at the NCAA Mideast Regionals to have two throwers in the shot put finals (Matt Pinter and Dave Adamek). At season’s end, Adamek, Pinter and freshman Gerald Gersham scored close to 50 points in the indoor and outdoor Mid-American Conference championships. Adamek won both the indoor and outdoor MAC shot put titles, totalling six for his career. Pinter finished second indoors in the shot and third out-doors. Further, Adamek was ranked 11th in the country when he qualified for the NCAA National Championship, breaking the EMU shot put record with a toss of 62-04.00. Bastien also coached the women’s hammer thrower, Maite Cortin, to a school record. Bastien is a 1981 EMU graduate. While an athlete at EMU

he won four consecutive MAC decathlon titles. He also com-peted in the U.S. junior national championship, USA versus USSR junior games, was a four-time NCAA Division I National Championship qualifier, where he twice earned All-American honos, in 1979 and 1980. After college, he defeated two NCAA champions and three future Olympians at the 1983 TAC Na-tional Championship (now the USATF) winning a bronze med-al. That effort earned him a spot on the 1983 U.S. Pan American Games team, qualified him for the 1984 Olympic trials and put him on the All-Time U.S. Decathlon Performance list. During that time, Bastien also coached under legendary Olympic team coach Mel Rosen, at Auburn University, coaching the throwing and multi-events. After retiring from running in 1986, he spent 23 years in the advertising industry, but continued to coach at EMU in 1986 and off and on into the late 80s and early 90s. He has also coached the Saline Hershey youth track teams for 10 years, the Ann Arbor Track Club Youth teams and volunteered with other youth programs on an as-needed basis as well. Bastien was inducted into the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. He has been married for 27 years to his wife Kathy, an EMU graduate and a women’s track member from 1976-1978. They reside in Saline, Mich., and have two children, Sarah (20) and Steven (14).

In three seasons (one indoor, two outdoor), Perry coached Myers to a three and a half feet improvement.

Perry graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Archeological Studies and Religion from Oberlin. While there, he was a four-year letterwinner and an NCAC All-Conference performer for five consecutive seasons, winning the NCAC Indoor Confer-ence Championship in 2004 and breaking the indoor school record. Perry holds a USATF Level I Coaching Certificate and is currently working towards a Level II Certificate in sprints and jumps. A native of Loveland, Colo., he is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at EMU and resides in Ann Arbor.

2009 Season Preview The Eastern Michigan University women’s track team returns a strong sophomore and junior class and with a talented group of newcomers on board and this means the 2009 season will be filled with high expectations. In just two seasons at the helm of the EMU women’s track and field team, Head Coach Sue Parks has begun to turn the pro-gram around, one rich in tradition, producing 13 Mid-American Conference Championship titles. Joining Parks for the 2008-09 season will be sprints/jumps assistant coach John Guarino, who enters his second season, as well as third-year throwing mentor Gary Bastien. New to the group this season is graduate assistant coach Shean Perry, who will work primarily with the pole vaulters, along with those com-peting in the multi event category. The 2008-09 Eagles are very young, with just one senior on the roster in Melissa Green (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville/Broadview Heights). Also returning are the members of the 4x400-meter relay team; Jasmine Gates (Virginia Beach, Va.-Tallwood), Dejaa Shearer (Canton, Ohio-Glen Oak), Beverly Elcock (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Northrop) and Brittany Lockhart (Canton, Mich.-Salem). This team finished third in the 4x400 at both the indoor and outdoor MAC Championship. “You look to the more experienced athletes for leadership, but we do have some sophomores and freshmen who lead by exam-ple,” commented Guarino. “The freshmen and transfer student-athletes will make a big impact for us. They are the present and future of the success of this team.” Coach Parks and staff follows with a preview of each area for the 2009 season.

sprinTs/Hurdles

EMU’s short sprints will be dominated by a group of fresh-men, as ReJeana Marigna (Beverly, N.J.-Burlington County Institute of Technology), Rosie White (New Albany, Ohio-New Albany) and Ashley Wartley (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) look to impact the team immediately. That trio of newcomers, with several state championships under their belt, bring a wealth of experience to the squad. In fact, Marigna was a seven-time New Jersey state champion in the short/long sprints. The long sprints will meld veterans and newcomers. Dejaa Shearer returns for her second year wearing the Green and White, while junior Shade St. Louis (Kansas City, Kan.-Eldorado Se-nior Comprehensive (Trinidad) (Kansas City CC)) joins the mix after transferring from Kansas City Community College. Freshmen Shantavia Williams (Homestead, Fla.-South Dade) and Christina Farrow (Detroit, Mich.-Renaissance) will join Shearer and St. Louis. Shearer made an immediate impact last season in the 400 meters, finishing sixth indoors and fifth out-doors at the MAC Championship. In the hurdles, the Eagles will look for Brittany Lockhart for support, while Shearer will see action in the intermediate hurdles during the outdoor season.

middle disTance

Perhaps the core of the team, the middle distance group will be littered with freshmen and sophomores looking to make an immediate impact on the team. Perhaps the strongest group will be the 800 meter runners, with a quartet of athletes—Beverly Elcock, Shade St. Louis, Christina Farrow and Lauren Quain-tance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern)—vying for the three squad spots at the MAC Championships. Quaintance, Elcock and freshman Natalie Webb (Allen Park, Mich.-Woodhaven) will keep the Eagles on pace in the mile and 1,500 meters.

disTance

Joining freshman Natalie Webb in the distance corp will be fellow newcomer Rachel Hollinger-Janzen (Goshen, Ind.-Gos-hen) and senior Melissa Green. Webb is coming off a tremendous rookie cross country sea-son as the Eagles’ top runner in four meets in the fall of 2008, including the MAC Championship and NCAA Great Lakes Re-gional, while Hollinger-Janzen was the top EMU runner in two meets this past fall. Green is the current school-record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as she broke her own mark last season, running 10:48.14. She also finished third in the event at the MAC Out-door Championship and was fifth in the 5,000-meter run.

Jumps

The Eagles will look to four individuals in the jumps. Lead-ing the way will be junior Jessica Novakowski (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) and freshman Cassie Coffman (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) in the pole vault, junior Jasmine Gates in the high jump and freshman Rosie White in the horizontal jumps. Novakowski returns as the top EMU vaulter after a transfer led the Eagles short handed in the vault. After sitting out the indoor season, Novakowski began to consistently jump over 11 feet and cleared an outdoor personal-best in the pole vault last season, jumping 11-11.75. Coffman, who cleared over 10 feet in high school, will look to add some depth in the event. Gates returns for her junior season after finishing third in the high jump last indoor season. Outdoors, she jumped a best of 5-07.00 at the Sea Ray Relays. She just missed out placing in the event at the outdoor conference championship. White will hold down the field in the long and triple jumps for the Eagles.

mulTis

Brittany Lockhart and Cassie Coffman will represent the Eagles in pentathlon and heptathlon. With two years under her belt, Lockhart just missed out on cracking into the scoring col-umn at last year’s indoor and outdoor MAC Championships and has high expectations to do so in 2009.

THroWs

After spending the 2008 season without a single thrower on the roster, coach Parks and crew added Angela Scarber (Water-ford, Mich.-Waterford) to the roster. Scarber was a three-year state qualifier in the shot put for the state of Michigan. Her best finish came as a junior when she finished second.

Top EMU Finisher BOLDED

After returning to her alma mater in 2006, head coach Sue Parks knew that rebuilding the women’s cross country program to its glory days would be no easy task, but little by little, the team has made improvements, heading in the right direction. Leading the way for the Eagles during the 2008 season was not a group of veterans but a duo of freshmen in Natalie Webb and Rachel Hollinger-Janzen, while senior Melissa Green added a solid third runner to the mix. Green, who was a 2007 All-Mid-American Conference performer and the teams’ num-ber one runner at the MAC meet in 2007, was hampered all season long by a lingering leg injury. In the first meet of the season the team was without Green, Hollinger-Janzen stepped up and led the team to a sixth place finish at the Detroit Titan Invitational. At the George Dales Invitational, it was Webb who would finish as the Eagles’ top runner, finishing second overall, while Hollinger-Janzen was sixth. Sophomore Lauren Quaintance was the third EMU runner across the line, finishing 16th. Green, running in her first meet of the season, debuted at 24th, good for fourth on the team. Hollinger-Janzen got her chance to lead the team against the best the state of Michigan had to offer at the Michigan Intercol-legiates, featuring MAC rivals Central Michigan and Western Michigan, along with countr rival Michigan. She led the team to a third-place finish overall and finished 11th individually.

Green returned to form at the Pre-National meet in Terra Haute, Ind. She led the Eagles for the first time all season against the nation’s best. It was her experience that helped her lead the way through one of the most challenging courses of the season for the Eagles. Green placed 188th overall. In the final home meet of the year before heading to the MAC Championship, freshman Amber Hutson led the way for the Eagles at the non-scoring EMU Fall Classic, finishing 25th in a time of 20:05. For her efforts, she was named the MAC Runner of the Week. In the comfort of home, the Eagles were looking for improve-ment from last season at the MAC Championship in which they finished 11th. The team finished 10th overall improving one spot from 2007. Webb led the way for the best individual per-formance, finishing 25th, while Green followed, placing 39th. Two weeks later, Webb led the way in the final meet of the season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet in West Lafayette, Ind. Webb finished 67th with a personal best time of 22:46. Eight out of nine runners set personal best times in the 5K during the season, while five of the runners improved their 6K marks. With a solid nucleus of underclassmen, the future looks bright for the Eagles.

Individual mac champions and runners-up

Current head coach Sue Parks is no stranger to the EMU community. The 1980 graduate competed for the then-Hurons in the late 70s. She was the Mid-American Conference Invitational cross country champion from 1976-1978. Her best time of 17:22 was a school record for eight years and has only been topped by a handful of runners since.

Our History Founded in 1849, when the state of Michigan was just 12 years old, Michigan State Normal Schoolwasdesignatedbythestatelegislatureasthefirstinstitutiontoeducateteacherstoservethe public schools. The University thus began, somewhat humbly, as the sixth teacher education institution in the nation. A campus that today comprises more than 800 acres was once a four-acre plot with one building and two programs of study – a classical course and an English Course. The school’s name changed several times – to Michigan State Normal College in 1899; to Eastern MichiganCollegein1956;andfinallytoEasternMichiganUniversityin1959.Duringitsfirst100years,theinstitutioncertifiedthousandsofteachersanddevelopedthebroad-basedcurriculathatultimately prepared it for university status. Within that new university, three colleges emerged: Education, Arts and Sciences and the Gradu-ate School. The University has since expanded three more times; adding the College of Business in 1964, the College of Health and Human Services in 1975 and the College of Technology in 1980. More recently Eastern Michigan has developed Extended Programs that include Continuing Edu-cation, the Centers for Corporate Training, the World College and numerous community-focused institutes. The University has enhanced its learning environment through structural initiatives during the past several years. Recent construction includes the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998), the Convocation Center (1998), the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998), the John W. Porter College of Education Building (1999), the Everett L. Marshall College of Health and Human Services Build-ing (2000), the Village residence hall (2001), University House (2003), and new Student Center (2006).
