Sequoia Park Zoo & Foundation
DearFriends,
Changecanbehard.But,changebringsopportinitiesaswell.Onecertaintyisthat2008broughtsomebigchangesfortheSequoiaParkZoo.Namely,forthefirsttimein101years,thereisanominaladmissionchargetoenjoytheZoo.Inallrealityalongtimecoming,thisfeehelpsSequoiaParkZooremaininyourcommunity.Weallrealizehowrareitisforaruralcommunityofoursizetohaveazoo,butthatisoneofthethingsthatmakesourZoosospecial.Andlet’sfaceit,wedon’tdothingsliketherestofthecountryhereinHumboldtCounty—wemakewhatourcommunitywantsandneedswork,hereinourownlittleparadise—howeverwecan.
Sinceimplementinganadmissioncharge,wehavenoticedsomepositivechangeswe’dliketosharewithyou(otherimprovementsaredetailedonthefacingpage).Visitorsstaylongeroneachvisit;theyreadtheinformational(andeducational!)signsassociatedwitheachexhibit;theyvaluetheirexperiencemorethaneverbefore.TheZooissaferandcleaner,too.Toremainaccessibletoall,wealsoofferDollarWednesdaysandmembershipisagreatwaytoenjoytheZoofreeallyear.Implementingadmissionsalsospurredustoincreasethepriorityofexhibitupgradesandrenovations,newexhibitsandspecies,andlearningexperiences—goodfortheanimals,theeconomyandthecommunity.2008markedthebeginningofjustthat—positivechange.2009marksyetanotherbeginningforourZooandwewillcontinuetochangeinwaysthatthatstrengthenus.
SequoiaParkZoooverflowswithopportunityaswefocusoureffortsonprovidingthecommunitywithvibranteducational,recreationalandconservationexperiencesandprogresstowardourvisionofa21stCenturyZoo.Whatismostamazingiswatchingnewwindowsofopportunityopenwitheachchangeandimprovement.Aseachyearpasses,webuildonouropportunitiesandcontinuetocreatenewones.Howexcitingtobeinvolvedinsuchadynamicprocessofpositivechangeinthecommunity.Thankyou,Zoomembersandsupporters,forhelpingmakeourvisionarealityinthepast,thepresentandintothefuture.

2008Milestones&ImprovementsGibbon Exhibit Makeover
Withtheadditionofourmodernprimateshiftingsysteminstalledlastyear,wearenowabletocooperativelyworkwiththegibbonssothattheyshiftoutoftheirexhibitdaily.Whilethegibbonsplayintheshiftarea,keeperscansafelyandeasilyservicetheirhabitat.Thissimpleadditionhasallowedstafftomakemanyimprovementstothequalityofthegibbonhabitat,includinganaturalsubstrateinsteadofconcrete,completewithtrees,shrubsandgrass,whichtheylovetonibble!
Addition of a New Endangered Species
WetookourfirststepstowardcreatinganewSouthAmerican-themedareawiththeadditionofanewspeciesforourzoo.TwoChacoanpeccaries(shaggymembersoftheswinefamily)movedherefromtheLAZooaspartoftheSpeciesSurvivalPlanprogramtohelprecoverthishighlyendangeredanimal.Theymadetheirhomequicklyintheirspaciousgrassypaddockandarebecomingfavoritesofstaffandvisitorswiththeirquirkystyle.
New Barnyard Additions
TheBarnyardbecamehomeforlotsofnewanimals:Oreotherabbit,BootsietheNigerianpygmygoat,andJoy,ournewAmericanguineahog.Thisisasmallbreedofpigdevelopedinthepioneerdaysbyhomesteaders.Thisisaveryrarebreedofhog;therearefewerthan200inexistencetoday.
Aviary Renovation
OurbiggestprojectthisyearwastherenovationoftheNancyHilfikerAviary.Duetoovergrowthoftreesandagingwalkways,itwastimetore-worktheinteriorofthe
exhibit.TheAviarynowfeaturesanewwalkway,nativeplantings,adedicatedbird-onlypondandbog,andafoyerfountainwithbeautifularttiles.
New Equipment
Ourmostexcitingpurchaseoftheyearwasagardentractorthatweusetomanageourcompostoperation,wherewekeepouranimalwasteoutofthelandfillandturnitintohigh-qualitysoilamendmentforgardeners.

ConservationisanintegralpartoflifeatSequoiaParkZoo.Somuchsothatin2008,theSequoiaParkZooFoundationcreatedaConservationFund.Onedollarofeverymembershipsoldgoestothisfundandonceable,wewillgrantfundstolocalwildliferelatedconservationinitiatives.
WealsohaveaConservationParkingMeter.The“fines”thismetercollectsgototheCenterforEcosystemSurvivaltopreservesacresofrainforest.In2008,SequoiaParkZooSupporterscontributed$700torainforestconservationintheGuancasteConservationAreainCostaRica.
SequoiaParkZooparticipatesinseveralcaptiveanimalbreedingprogramscalledSpeciesSurvivalPlans,includingCotton-toppedtamarins,Chacoanpeccaries,SpidermonkeysandWhite-handedgibbons.TheseSSPprogramsmanagethecaptivebreed-ingeffortcooperativelyamongAZA-accreditedzoostoensurethelong-termgeneticviabilityofmanyendangeredanimals.EachSSPprogramalsoinvolvesconservationworkwithinthehomerangeofthatspecies,whetherprovidingfundingsupportforresearch,populationandhabitatmonitoring,orhabitatpreservation.Forexample,theChacoanpeccarySSPhelpssupportaconservationbreedingcenterinsidetheChacoregionofArgentinathathashelpedbringthisspeciesbackfromthebrinkofextinction.
