The Airport Authority made an exciting announcement

this month: Vancouver International Airport is an Official

Supplier to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic

Winter Games—the first partnership of its kind in Olympic

Games history.

We’ve been working with VANOC for some time on this

unprecedented agreement, which will see us provide dedicated

facilities for VANOC and Olympic Games activity, expedited

passenger and baggage services and in-terminal advertising and

retail opportunities. Our agreement also includes sponsorship

rights to the Canadian Olympic Team for Beijing 2008, Vancouver

2010 and the London 2012 Games.

As Douglas Coupland wrote in his homage to Vancouver,

City of Glass, “For many people, YVR is where Vancouver begins

and ends.” Certainly this will be true for many of the athletes and

guests visiting Vancouver for the Olympic Games—our airport

will form their first and last impression of the city.

For several years, we’ve been working on plans to welcome

the world for 2010. Many of the changes we announced late

last year, including a new international reception lounge with

a 24-hour customer care centre and enhanced language and

translation services, were in the planning stages for the Olympic

Games before they were fast tracked for early completion.

Now that we’ve formalized our role as a 2010 sponsor, we’ve

put some key people in new positions. Paul Levy, who has been

vice president, airport operations, has been made vice president,

planning, 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Paul’s dedicated

focus will be to lead the preparation, planning, and delivery of our

mandate to welcome each guest with personalized care during

the Games.

Customer care is not just a priority in 2010. To ensure we

maintain our commitment to care for each and every customer

who comes through the airport, Don Ehrenholz, formerly director,

engineering projects, has stepped into the role of vice president,

airport operations.

With our team in place, I am confident we will set a new

standard in welcoming the world. We have already introduced

services that are unprecedented among Canadian airports, such as

our 24-hour customer care counter in the Canada Border Services

Agency Customs Hall. This counter receives approximately 250

enquiries a day, with questions ranging from information about

YVR facilities to flight information to baggage. The most common

questions are related to directions.

Another service that has received widespread use and will

serve us well during 2010 is our 24-hour Language Line, which

gives us access to translators speaking more than 170 different

languages. On average, the Language Line is used about four to

six times a day. So far the most requested languages have been

Mandarin and Spanish.

We have more work to do to prepare for the Games, but we

are well on our way to welcoming the world, one person at a

time.

Barbados Agreement from page 1

President’s CornerBy LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer

Name that Aircraft

“Canada greatly values its

close, long-standing relationship

with Barbados,” said Minister

Emerson. “Canada is celebrating

the 100th anniversary of the

Canadian Trade Commissioner

Service’s presence in Barbados

this year. The new agreement

will provide a stronger basis

for competitive air services. We

anticipate this will generate even

more growth in trade, tourism

and investment.”

The new agreement also

provides all-cargo air carriers

with greater options to facilitate

and expedite the flow of cargo

between both countries, and

third countries, including those

of the Caricom region. Caricom

countries include Antigua

and Barbuda, the Bahamas,

Barbados, Belize, Dominica,

Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica,

Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis,

Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and

the Grenadines, Suriname, and

Trinidad and Tobago.

This new agreement builds on

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s

visit to the Caribbean region

in July 2007, when he outlined

Canada’s re-engagement in the

Americas as a critical, long-term

international priority for the

government.

In 2007, trade between Canada

and Caricom members, including

Barbados, was $2.2-billion, a 20

per cent increase from 2006.

Canadian merchandise exports

to Caricom totalled $725-million

and merchandise imports from

Caricom totalled $1.47-billion.

In 2006, 25,600 Canadians

travelled to Barbados. The

Caricom region received more

than 251,100 Canadian tourists

in 2006.

The new provisions are

applied immediately. Once

ratified, the new agreement will

replace the 1985 agreement

currently in force.

The Honourable Lawrence

Cannon, Minister of Transport,

Infrastructure and Communities,

has announced the designation of WestJet

to operate scheduled international air

services between Canada and Barbados.

This designation was made possible by

the bilateral air transport agreement recently

concluded between Canada and Barbados.

“I am pleased that WestJet’s

designation will provide additional

airline choices for Canadians travelling

between Canada and Barbados,” said

Minister Cannon. “This increase in

scheduled air services is a great example

of growth in the airline industry.”

Under the provisions of Canada’s

international air transportation policy,

all Canadian air carriers may apply to

the Minister for designation to operate

scheduled international air services.

The agreement permits each country

to designate any number of airlines for

the operation of scheduled air services

to and from Canada, with no limitation

on flight frequency.

Billing itself as “a new generation,

aviation service provider” Sea

Land Air Flight Centre celebrated

its grand opening on March 1 at their

new Boundary Bay Airport hangar

facilities.

Attending the ribbon-cutting

ceremony were Richmond Mayor

Malcolm Brodie, Delta Mayor Lois

Jackson, Boundary Bay airport manager

Gordon Andrews and Thomas Fung,

chairman and founder of the Fairchild

Group, Sea Land Air’s parent company.

Sea Land Air operates modern

Diamond Aircraft for its flight training

and five models were on display

including the latest Diamond D-Jet

single-engine, personal jet aircraft,

which drew a lot of attention from the

many guests attending the opening.

Other exhibits included luxury Audis,

Jaguars and Land Rovers from Richmond

AutoMall’s Cowell Motors, and the latest

Harley Davidson motorbikes from

Vancouver’s Trev Deely Motorcycles.

Sea Land Air Flight Centre provides

one-stop aviation services, ranging from

flight training—using modern aircraft

with advanced avionics—and aircraft

rental to fractional programs and

aircraft sales.

Construction of the airport

portion of the Canada Line is

zipping along, ahead of the

initial project schedule.

With work on the elevated guideway

from YVR to Bridgeport Station

complete, crews are now focusing

on YVR’s three Canada Line stations:

Templeton, the first stop on Sea Island

heading to YVR; Sea Island Centre; and

YVR-Airport Station. The stations are

due for completion this fall.

Currently, concrete and structural

steel work is being done, along with

preliminary roof installation. Installation

of the mechanical, electrical and control

systems that will be used to power the

trains is also underway and slated for

completion by April 2008. This includes

two concrete power substations on Sea

Island that will help keep trains moving.

The Canada Line will run fully

separated from traffic between

Vancouver International Airport, the

heart of Richmond’s civic precinct and the

transportation hub at Waterfront Centre

in Vancouver. With 16 stations, two

bridges, approximately 19 kilometres of

tunnel and elevated guideway, parking

and bus facilities and transit capacity

equivalent to 10 road lanes, the Canada

Line will be an important new link in the

regional transportation network.

“When the Canada Line is operational

in 2009, YVR will join just a handful

of international airports with a rapid

transit link to and from the city centre

and communities between,” said Larry

Berg, president and CEO, Vancouver

Airport Authority, at the completion of a

critical phase of the Line’s construction

earlier this month. “This is an important

connection, particularly as we prepare to

welcome the world for the 2010 Olympic

and Paralympic Winter Games.”

Come late April, expect to see the

first trains using the track, as the

YVR line will be used for testing and

commissioning of all trains before

the Canada Line opens officially in

November 2009. Initially, four sets of

two-car trains will be tested, with three

more sets of trains arriving in Vancouver

in the coming months for testing on the

airport portion of the line.

In April, the crew will turn its efforts

to landscaping along the Canada Line.

More than 1,000 plants, including cherry

and dogwood trees, evergreens, poplars,

and ground cover will be planted to

beautify the route.

Honda Aircraft is expanding

sales of its advanced HondaJet

with a direct sales and service

support plan for the Canadian market.

Sales to Canada will be handled directly

from the company’s headquarters in

Greensboro, North Carolina. Service

support will be provided through the

HondaJet service facilities in the U.S. that

are closest to the Canadian customers’

location.

Initial deliveries of the HondaJet to

Canadian customers are expected to

begin by the year 2012.

“This is an important step to have our

business plan in place in Canada,” said

Michimasa Fujino, president and CEO

of Honda Aircraft. “We are confident

that we have established the basis for

exceptional support that will provide

our customers with unparalleled quality

and convenience.”

Honda Aircraft began U.S. sales of the

HondaJet in October 2006 and quickly

amassed orders for well over 100 units.

In order to answer increasing demand

for the new business jet, the company is

expanding sales to now include both the

Canadian and Mexican markets.

The HondaJet features several

innovations that are designed to help

it achieve better fuel efficiency, larger

cabin and luggage space, and higher

cruise speed than conventional aircraft

in its Very Light Jet class. The result of

20 years of aviation research by Honda,

key HondaJet innovations include a

patented over-the-wing engine-mount

configuration, a natural-laminar flow (NLF)

wing and fuselage nose, and an advanced

all-composite fuselage structure.

Worldwide HondaJet pilot training

will be conducted in partnership with

Flight Safety International, which will

include the development of a Level-

D, full-motion flight simulator for

HondaJet. The first simulator will be

installed at Honda Aircraft Company’s

new headquarters facility. Additional

training facilities will be established in

the future as HondaJet sales continue

to grow.

owned subsidiary of Honda Motor

Airlines in the oneworld alliance

are bringing their operations

together at Beijing International

Airport in its new passenger terminal.

The transfer to the state-of-the-art

Terminal 3 is occurring in two phases:

• British Airways and Qantas, as two

of the first six airlines to use the new

building, moved to the new terminal

last month.

• The other oneworld airlines

serving Beijing—Cathay Pacific,

Dragonair, Finnair and Japan

Airlines—will transfer into

Terminal 3 on March 26.

All oneworld airlines will use check-in

desks in the terminal’s area C.

Dragonair and Cathay Pacific will

announce details of their lounge facility

in Terminal 3 ahead of their move there.

Premium passengers from other

oneworld carriers will have access to

the new common-use lounge in Beijing

Terminal 3, which opened last month,

with separate facilities for First and

Business Class passengers.

This lounge is located one floor up

from the main departures concourse

level, near the airlines’ departure gates.

They offer a full range of facilities for

passengers whether they want to work

or relax.

All six oneworld carriers serving

Beijing currently operate in Terminal 2.

Between them, they operate up to 15

departures a day from Beijing non-stop to

eight destinations with connections to the

near 700 airports they and their oneworld

partners serve worldwide.

Designed by British architects Foster

and Partners, the US$2-billion Terminal

3 covers one million square metres. With

a third runway for the airport opening at

the same time, it will double capacity to

76 million passengers a year.

Last month, an Airbus A380 aircraft

successfully completed the world’s

first flight by a commercial

aircraft using a liquid fuel processed

from gas (GTL) in the first stage of

a test flight programme to evaluate

the environmental impact of alternative

fuels in the airline market. The flight

from Filton, U.K. to Toulouse, France,

lasted three hours.

The A380 was chosen because the

aircraft is already the environmental

benchmark in air travel. It has four

engines including segregated fuel tanks

making it ideal for engine shut down and

re-light tests under standard evaluation

conditions. During the flight, engine

number one was fed with a blend of GTL

and jet fuel whilst the remaining three

engines were fed with standard jet fuel.

This was the first step of a long-term

Airbus testing phase to evaluate viable

and sustainable alternative fuels for the

future. GTL could be available at certain

locations to make it a practical and viable

drop-in alternative fuel for commercial

aviation in the short term. GTL has

attractive characteristics for local air

quality, as well as some benefits in terms

of aircraft fuel burn relative to existing

jet fuel. For instance, it is virtually free

of sulphur. Synthetic fuel can be made

from a range of hydrocarbon source

material including natural gas or organic

plant matter made by a process called

Fischer-Tropsch.

Testing GTL will support future

second generation bio-fuels, which are

not presently available in sufficient

commercial quantities. Airbus will study

viable second generation bio-fuels when

they become available.

“This [test flight] has been a great

achievement,” said Airbus president and

CEO Tom Enders. “Fuel and environment

are key challenges aviation is facing and

for which technology and international

research collaboration open up new

horizons. Our alternative fuels roadmap

requires innovation, diversity of ideas

and options that need to be explored.

This takes bold cross-industry and cross-

border collaboration and that’s what we

are showing with our groundbreaking

first test flight with alternative fuels. It is

part and parcel of Airbus’ commitment

to providing leadership as an eco-

efficient enterprise.”

Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai. The

codeshare services offer customers

convenient connection options, one-stop

check-in and seamless baggage transfer

to final destination on a single ticket.

“We are pleased to offer our

customers more choice and convenience

when travelling to India, in cooperation

with our partner, Jet Airways,” said

Daniel Shurz, vice president, network

of travelling to India via London, in

addition to Frankfurt or Zurich with

our Star Alliance partners, Air Canada

customers benefit from a vast choice of

daily, year-round flights to and from the

communities we serve across Canada,

and four major destinations in India.”

Air Canada customers travelling to

India now benefit from the choice of

the carrier’s extensive schedule of non-

Delta is first U.S. carrier to take delivery of Boeing 777-200LRDelta Air Lines has taken delivery

of the first of eight Boeing

777-200LR (long range) jets

scheduled to enter its fleet by early 2009.

By adding the world’s longest-range

commercial jetliner to its fleet, Delta

bolsters its ability to connect customers

and cargo between virtually any two

cities around the globe, nonstop.

“This 777-200LR marks an important

milestone for Delta as our first new

delivery from Boeing in six years, as well

as another step forward in creating a truly

global airline,” said Edward Bastian, Delta’s

president and chief financial officer.

Delta received the new aircraft during

an event at Boeing Field in Seattle attended

by Bastian and more than 100 Delta

employees. In tribute to employees and

to the original “Spirit of Delta”—a Boeing

767-200 given to the airline in 1982

by employees, retirees and friends—the

new Boeing 777-200LR, Ship 7101, will

be called “The Delta Spirit” in gratitude

to the many accomplishments of Delta’s

employees worldwide. The aircraft will be

officially dedicated to Delta employees in

a celebration this month in Atlanta.

The new 777-200LR is the flagship

aircraft for Delta’s new global product,

including fully horizontal personal

sleeper suites in BusinessElite, next-

generation, more comfortable seats

in coach, and Delta’s on-demand

entertainment system on larger screens

at every seat.

BusinessElite customers flying on

the 777-200LR will enjoy a host of new

features that include reclining, adjustable

seats that lie flat, privacy screens,

personal stowage compartment and USB

ports for personal MP3 players.

Delta plans to offer sleeper suites

with these amenities on its entire 777

fleet by 2010.

The airline’s 777-200LR aircraft

will offer customers flying in coach

comfortable all-leather slim-line seats

each with on-demand music, movies,

games and television on individual 9-inch

video monitors. Delta is the first airline

to offer the sleek, new, leading-edge

seats from Weber Aircraft LP, offering

up to 1.5 inches of increased personal

space, additional under-seat storage,

and ergonomically designed cushions.

On all Delta international flights,

customers in coach also enjoy enhanced

food offerings, a complimentary cocktail

with each meal, and complimentary

amenities, including eye shades and ear

plugs for more personal comfort and

privacy.

In addition to keeping passengers

moving and people and places

connected, over the past 15 years

YVR has also become an international

hotspot for air cargo, providing

Canadian companies and products with

fast, efficient access to the world.

A Pacific Rim location on the Great

Circle Routes, a bustling seaport,

established rail and truck routes to key

North American cities and YVR’s air links

to 19 international and 27 U.S. scheduled

non-stop destinations has helped put

Vancouver on the transportation and

logistics map.

In 2007, YVR handled almost 225,500

tonnes of cargo, up from 223,100 tonnes

in 2006. That’s an average of 618 tonnes

of cargo a day.

YVR’s ‘Cargo Village’ is Sea Island’s

air cargo headquarters and is home to

air carriers, freight forwarders, customs

brokers, trucking and courier companies,

which occupy more than 92,900 square

metres of cargo buildings and warehouse

space. Thirty-eight of YVR’s airlines carry

cargo—some exclusively, like Cargojet,

FedEx, Purolator and UPS—and some in

addition to passenger services, such as

Air Canada and Cathay Pacific.

New routes and services are good

news for both passenger travel and the

air cargo business at YVR. Increasingly,

new airlines review both passenger and

cargo opportunities when considering

a new service to Vancouver. Air New

Zealand and Oasis Hong Kong Airlines,

both new carriers to YVR last year,

helped grow YVR’s air cargo business

in 2007.

A recent change to federal air

cargo regulations is a positive step for

further growth of the cargo business

at YVR and the Asia-Pacific gateway.

Last month, the Minister of Transport,

Infrastructure and Communities

approved YVR for participation in the

international air cargo transshipment

program. This program will allow air

cargo to be moved through the airport

for shipment to third countries,

which, in turn, will significantly

expand YVR’s network. For example,

cargo can now be flown from the

U.S. into YVR, stored temporarily,

and then flown to a final European

destination. Alternately, cargo can

arrive from overseas and then be

shipped by rail or truck from YVR to

a U.S. destination.

Boeing has completed 50 per cent

of the design releases for the new

747-8 Freighter. The program

has released the 747-8 Freighter’s

detailed designs to Boeing factories and

its suppliers in order to begin building

parts, assemblies and tools for the new

cargo airplane.

“This design milestone is a tribute

to efforts of the 747-8 team, our

customers and suppliers,” said Ross

R. Bogue, vice president and general

manager, 747 program and Everett site.

“We are now focused on completing the

remaining design work and delivering a

747-8 Freighter that increases the 747

family’s leadership in the growing cargo

market.”

The 747-8 Freighter, which launched

in November 2005, is scheduled to

start delivering in late 2009 to launch

customers Cargolux and Nippon Cargo

Airlines.

The airplane will be longer than the

747-400 Freighter by 5.6 metres and

enjoy a maximum structural payload

capability of 140 metric tonnes with a

range of more than 8,185 kilometres.

It will offer 16 per cent more revenue

cargo volume than its predecessor,

allowing the airplane to accommodate

four more main-deck pallets and three

more lower-hold pallets. Powered by

GEnx engines, the 747-8 Freighter will

be 17 per cent more fuel efficient than

the 747-400 Freighter and 30 per cent

quieter.

“The 747-8 Freighter builds upon

the 747-400 Freighter’s legendary

efficiency,” said Bogue. “It will provide

nearly equivalent trip costs and 16

per cent lower ton-mile costs than its

predecessor. The 747-8 Freighter will

deliver the lowest ton-mile costs of

any freighter, giving cargo operators

unmatched profit potential.”

In addition to the airplane’s

efficiencies, the 747-8 Freighter will

complement the new 777 Freighter with

the ability to transfer cargo directly

between the two airplanes. The main-

deck cargo doors on both airplanes

are sized to accommodate three-metre

pallets for easy interlining.

The efficiencies offered by the 747-

8 Freighter are evident in the strong

market demand for the airplane. To

date, Boeing has secured 78 orders for

the new, efficient 747-8 Freighter from

10 cargo operators.
