amidst the manyconversationsandmuchplanningaboutthefutureofHolyBlossom,itiseasytomisshowmanyvolunteershavegivensomuchtimeandeffortoverthepastnumberofyears.Permitmetosayaword,evenaninad-equateone,aboutthesemanypeople.
ThankyoutotheBoardofDirectorsunderDr.BarryBorden(1999–2000)whichaffirmedavision—spiritual,intellectual,physicalandreligious—somesevenoreightyearsago.AddtothatthevariousBoardsofDirectorsun-dertheleadershipofPresidentsSheilaSmolkin,DavidBaskin,AlanGarfinkelandBarrySilver,whichhavecontinuedtocarryonthatworkandbuildthefuturewehavebeguntoimagine.
m a N y o T H e r SThentherearethemanyothercommit-teesandefforts:theArchitecturalSelectionCommittee,theStrategicPlanningCommittee,thefundraisingendeavoursandtheleadershipoftheFoundation.
Addtotheirworktheeffortsofthemanyteamsofourmembersinvari-ousareas—communications,workingwithTheLeoBaeckDaySchool,think-ingabouttransitionpossibilitiesandsomuchmore.Addtothatthemanyconversations,meetingsandefforts
toreachouttoallofourmembers—andwehaveanengagedcongregationdoingthekindofworkthatwehopewillnotonly
enhanceandrenewourphysicalspace,butmoreimportantly,createapalpable,liberal,religioussynagoguecommunity.
Icannotadequatelystatetheimpor-tanceoflayleadership.MycolleaguesandIworkveryhard,andIamproudofourworkasIamofthequalitiesofheartandmindmycolleaguesbringtothissynagogue.Butintheend,layleadership—thosewhogivesomuchandsomanyhours—willultimatelymakeorbreakanythingwewishtodo.Andoverthepastnumberofyears,byvirtueoftheworkoftheirhandsandoftheirhearts,theyaremakingthissynagogueintothekindofcommunitythatJewsneed:aplaceofbelonging,believingandbehavingasJews.
Thereisnoadequatewaytothankthedozensanddozens—reallythehundreds—ofmembersofourcommunitywhohavebeenengagedintheconversation,theplanningandthehonestdebateanddiscussion.Andso,asourprogrammaticyearmovestothesummerslowness,letmethankeveryone.
Allofthisisnotsimplyaboutour
future.Therearemanythankstogoaroundforotherendeavours:the150thAnniversaryCommittee,whichhasgivenusagreatyearofcelebration;theSefer TorahProjectCommittee,whichculminatedthreeyearsofhardworkwithabeautifuldedicationofanewSefer TorahonShavuot; theTorahAdornmentsCommittee,whichattractedtalentedartistsandselectedgorgeousmantlesandsilverwaretoenhanceourWorshipexperience.Andthisistosaynothingofsomanyotherleadersandvolunteers—inFamilyProgramming,TempleSingers,Brotherhood,Sisterhood,theIsraelCommitteeortheBikur CholimCom-mittee,nottomentionthevariousAdministrativeandReligiouscom-mitteesthatmakethissynagoguework—butmorethanwork,makethissynagogueaplaceofcommunity,belonging,substanceandcontent.
T H a N k S T o a l lIwouldberemisstothankourvolun-teersalone.Letmealso,onbehalfofall,thanktheirhusbandsandwives,theirchildren,theirparentsandfriendsforallowingustheuseoftheirtime,andtheuseoftheirhandsandheart.

The endoftheyearisatimetoreflectontheaccomplishmentsofourFoun-dation.Oursuccesseshavebeencreatednotbytheeffortsofoneperson,butbythehardworkofmany.I’dliketotakethisopportunitytorecognizesomeofthesecontributors.
Duringthispastyear,theFounda-tionhasconcentratedmucheffortonadministrationandgovernance.
Wehiredprofessionalstafftodrivestrategicfundraisingprograms,runthedailyactivitiesandsupporttheBoard.HeatherCrawfordandLloydHoffer,ChairsoftheGovernanceCommittee,conductedanextensivereviewofourcorporaterecordsandachievedourgoaltoupdateandmodernizethebylaws.Wealsoupdatedourfinancialadmin-istrationpracticesbyimplementinga9percentlevyonmostdonationstocoverouradministrationcosts.Theseactivitiescementcriticalelementsneed-edforoperatingasuccessfulandfiscallyresponsiblephilanthropicorganization.
MichaelDiamond,LindaFrumandRabbiJohnMoscowitzwerechampionsatsecuring‘leadershipgifts’forHolyBlossomTemple’s
renewalproject.TheirdedicationandcommitmenttothetaskisevidencethatHolyBlossomhashigh-calibretalentreadytoembarkonmajorfundraisinginitiatives.
WearepleasedtointroduceDavidandAngelaFeldmanasCapitalCam-paignCo-Chairs;theirleadershipandenergywillbeagreatadditiontoourCampaignteam.StephanieLennox,ofKCIKetchumCanadaInc,continuedtoprovidestrategiccounseltotheCampaign.
AsChairoftheDonorRecognitionandCommunicationCommittee,JudyNyman,withsupportfromJoyRosen,hasdevelopedan18-monthplanthatincludesnewandinnovativeprograms.Ourdonorswillsoonseethefruitsofthe
effortswe’rebuildingtorecognizetheirgenerosity.
LorneSaltmanandateamofvol-unteersarefocusingeffortsonalegacygivingprogram:along-terminitiativetosecureourfutureforgenerationstocome.Ourlegacygivingprogramwillbeunveiledthisfall.
Dr.FredSaundersshouldbecommendedforhiscommitmenttotheAnnualContributionCampaign,whichhelpsfundtheTemple’soperatingcosts,whileHenriettaChesnieshouldbeapplaudedforhercommitmenttoour150thAnniversarycelebrations,whichprovideduswithayearofevents.

verydifferentconcertsforallofustoenjoy.WegreatlyappreciatedthecontributionoftheCantorandtheTempleSingersatourmajorevents.
Wewereabletoofferspeciallectures(sponsoredbyBrotherhood),varioustoursandothereventsduringtheyear.AndallofourmemberslearnedmoreaboutthehistoryofHolyBlossom,throughinformativepamphletsonsomeofourleadinghistoricalfigures,severalarchivaldisplaysandseventhoughtfulpostersoutliningourhistori-caldevelopment.
DuringourEducationReunionWeek-end,itwasthrillingtogreetsomanyofourformerassociateandassistantrabbisanddirectorsofeducation.IhavetoadmitIwasbroughttotearsontheShabbatmorningofthatweekendwhenseveralhundredofourconfirmands,teachersandeducationallayleaderswerecalledtothebimahforanaliyah.
Ta year to remember
The celebrationofHolyBlossomTemple’s150thAnniversaryiscomingtoanend,andwhatawonderfulyearithasbeen.FromthepompandcircumstanceoftheopeningceremoniesinthepresenceoftheGovernorGeneral,tothesheerprideandjoyoftheTorontoSymphonyOrchestraconcertinourhonour,andeveryexcitingeventinbetween,wewereremindedthatHolyBlossomholdsgreatmeaning,notonlyforitsmembers,butforallTorontonians.

Ourcongregation’sTorat Chaimproject,whichbeganonSimchat TorahwhenourHonoraryPresident,JackGeller,wrotethefirstletterinthescroll,culminatedonShavuot,whenthenewSefer Torahwasformallydedicatedandreadfromforthefirsttime.

The Temple archivescontainagreatdealofinformationabouttheopeningoftheBondStreetSynagogueonSept.15,1897.However,inthelastfewmonths,wehaveacquiredtwomoreimportantartifactsfromthissignificanteventinourhistory.
ThefirstacquisitionoccurredwhenMichaelLarkin,ourFacilitiesManager,andsomeBrotherhoodvolunteerswerecleaningoutthetower.TheretheyfoundalargeoilpaintingofAlfredBenjamin.TheplaqueonthepaintingindicatedthatthepiecehadbeenhunginthevestibuleoftheBondStreetSynagogueandwasdedicatedtoAlfredinappreciationofhisoutstandingleadershipasPresidentoftheCongregationfrom1882to1885andagainfrom1892to1900.HeandhisbrotherFrankwerethemainpeopleresponsibleforthenewsynagogueonBondStreetbeingbuilt.

i write thisjustbeforeShavuot,whenwestandagainatMountSinaitoreceivetheTorah,toclaimtherespon-sibilityofmitzvot.ReformJudaismhasalwaysaffirmedmitzvotinprin-cipleandpractice,butthescopehaschangedovertheyears.OnceJewishimmigrantstotheseshorestossedtheirtefillinoverboardtofreethemselvesfromwhatphysicallyboundthemtomitzvot.Today,manyofourB’nei Mitzvahaskforinstruc-tiontowrapthemselvesintheblackleatherstraps.
H e a r i N G v o i C e SWhatmotivatesourrenewedinterestinmitzvot—bothrituallyandethi-cally?Isitsimplythatethnicityisnowfashionable?Orissomethingdeeperatwork?Forsome,thecommandingvoiceofSinaiishistory—whoamItoturnawayfrom4,000yearsofancestorsandtradition?Forothers,thecommandingvoicecomesfromcommunity—whatwillfriendsand
neighboursthinkofmeifIdonotlivebyacer-tainethic?Forsome,thecommandingvoicecomesfromthefuture,ourchildrenwhosay,
“Givemeguidance.Givemeapathtowalkthroughthisworld.”Forothers,thecommandingvoiceisnoneotherthantheVoiceoftheLivingGod.
m i T z v a H a S r e S P o N S eSinceReformJudaismtookrootinthiscontinent,itshallmarklanguagehasbeenwordslike“choice”and“autono-my.”RabbiArnoldJacobWolf,alead-ingfigureofourMovement,callsthepick-and-chooseapproachtomitzvot“theoriginalsinofReformJudaism,”becauseitdeniesthefactthatwearedependentuponGod.
Oncewerecognizethatourverybreath(ultimately)dependsuponGod,ourlife’sworkbecomesfulfillingGod’swill.WhatGod’swillisforeachofusandhowtogoaboutfulfillingitare
complexquestions—that’swheretheapproachofReformJudaismcomesin—buttherelationship,whichdemandsaresponsefromus,issurprisinglysimple.
Jewsofallstripesliketotalkaboutthe“howtos”ofmitzvot.Thefounda-tionalquestion,however,iswhy?WhatisitthatclaimsmesostronglythatIhavenochoicebuttosayyes.
Take,forexample,nichum aveilim, themitzvahtocomfortmourners.Makingashivacallisanawkward,inconvenient,emotionallydifficultthingtodo,andyet,wefindourselveswalkingupthosefrontsteps.Weareduty-bound.Thereisnochoiceinit.Thereisonlyacallandaresponse.
ThesociologistPhilipRieffsays,“Youcannotchooseanethic.Thewholepointofanethicisthatitcomestoyou.Itisdiscovered.”TheJewishethichasalwayscomeintheformofmitzvot.Thequestionwemustaskis,“HaveIdiscoveredityet?”
