portunities to keep the registrants happily andproductively involved in the exchange of ideas andappreciation of this engaging plant. Orchid artand related items will be on display and, of course, there will be a large sales mart carrying plantsand all things related to orchids. “The South Florida Orchid Society and the Ft.Lauderdale Orchid Society annually sponsor thetwo largest orchid shows in Florida, and their ex-pertise and experience is exactly the right combi-nation for organizing and hosting a World OrchidConference,” said co-chairman of the conferenceRobert Fuchs, president of South Florida OrchidSociety. “Indeed, having hosted the 11th WorldOrchid Conference in 1984 in Miami, the two lo-cal societies are looking forward to bringing thisevent back to beautiful South Florida for a spec-tacular and successful conference.” Orchid connoisseurs and novices alike will con-vene for five days to admire the stunning orchiddisplays, discuss a variety of topics related to Or-chids, and network within the Orchid community. The organizers of this international event expectmore than 250,000 people from around the worldto attend this hotly anticipated tribute to theplant that has inspired a spectrum of emotionsfrom admiration to infatuation. “Orchids, with their lively hues, elegant blos-soms and vibrant flora, evoke passion and aweamong gardeners, collectors and flower aficiona-dos across the globe,” said co-chairman of the con-ference Col. Kenneth Kone, past president of Ft.Lauderdale Orchid Society. “The lush, tropicalsetting of South Florida is a perfect place to hostthe World Orchid Conference. With internationalvendors and experts attending, this orchid showwill be the epicenter of the Orchid world.” Orchids are the largest and most diverse ofthe flowering plant families, with more than25,000 species. The Chinese were the first to cul-

tivate orchids, but Victorian England was ob-sessed with them — sending explorers to SouthAmerica to bring back exotic varieties. Now con-ference attendees will have the chance to see theflower that has evoked such fervent adoration. Orchids now account for over $120 million insales and are the fastest growing segment of theUnited States’ floriculture industry. The 2008event will be only the fourth time that a WorldOrchid Conference has been held in the UnitedStates, making this a triumph for Florida orchiddevotees. Last year’s conference in Dijon, France, attracted 200,000 visitors and vendors from 30countries. Other major cities that have hosted thiscelebrated event include Rio de Janeiro, Glasgow, and Tokyo.
