2007 SC STATE OUTLOOK: “100 Years of Bulldog Football (1907-2007)

South Carolina State will celebrate its 100th year of football during the 2007season, and the Bulldogs will do it amid the school’s most ambitiousschedule ever. SC State, which has never faced a major university on thegridiron, will take on two Division I-A (Football Bowl Subdivision) opponentsthis season. Coach Buddy Pough’s team opens the 2007 campaign at theAir Force Academy on Sept. 1, and two weeks later, travels forty (40) milesup I-26 to Columbia to face intrastate rival University of South Carolina forthe first time on Sept. 15.

Between the two Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams, theBulldogs must travel to Daytona Beach to take on Mid-Eastern AthleticConference rivals and perennial power Bethune-Cookman, the team thathanded SC State its worst loss last season.

The Bulldogs are expected to be competitive during this historicseason as they will put a seasoned team on the field. Forty-Three (43)letterwinners, including twenty-six (26) on offense, return from the 2006team which, after a 1-3 start, bounced back to win six of its last sevencontests to finish 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference,a second-place tie in the league standings.

The Bulldog offense will be directed by a senior quarterback, theinterior line is a seasoned one, the running game – despite the loss of theleague rushing leader – is expected to be strong, and the receiving corps istalented, despite a somewhat youthful look.

On defense, where seventeen (17) letterwinners are back, SCState will not have the overall experience of the 2006 squad, however, theunit is expected to be more talented and should emerge as one of theleague’s most productive.

The defensive line, which took some heavy losses, will be seekingan identity, however, the young group that will be without any seniors, hasloads of talent; the linebacking corps is experienced with four startersreturning, and the secondary suffered just one loss of note.

In the area of special teams, SC State lost a reliable placekickerand a punter who shared punting duties last year, however, an all-conference caliber placekicker from two years ago is back. There is a littleuncertainty in the punting department, however, that could change.

SC State has shared one MEAC title (2004) since Poughsucceeded the legendary Willie Jeffries in 2002; however, the Bulldogshave not been able to get to the I-AA playoffs. That could change this seasonas SC State is expected to be among the teams to beat in the MEAC thisyear.

QuarterbacksCleveland McCoy returns for his senior season. A preseason All-MEACcandidate, McCoy is only one year removed from the 2005 season in whichhe led the MEAC in passing and was a first-team All-Conference selection. His production dropped off a bit in 2006 when he had to learn a new system, however, he will be starting for the third straight year. A team leader and verydetermined, McCoy is expected to improve on last year’s showing in whichhe completed 94 of 183 attempts for 1124 yards and 10 touchdowns, whilesuffering nine interceptions. Reserve duties will have to be provided by

newcomers as both backups from last season will notbe available. Russell Hemby, the top backup at theposition in 2006, has moved to the secondary, and BryanHardy, who saw limited action behind center, transferred. Freshmen Malcolm Long (Mr. Football inthe State of South Carolina last season) and DeWainClark are both very talented and will battle for the chanceto backup McCoy.

Running BacksAll-MEAC rusher DeShawn Baker, who finished hiscareer second on the school’s all-time rushing list, isgone, taking with him a lot of experience, however, thetalent level of the 2007 group should keep the Bulldogground game near the top of the MEAC. SophomoreWill Ford, who trailed only Baker in yards gained lastyear, will spearhead the young group, which will behelped by the return of Jonathan Woods, whoredshirted last year after a 2005 season in which he wasthe team leader in touchdowns and finished second toBaker in yards gained. Help should also come from

senior Jo Jo McFadden, sophomore Travil Jamison, and redshirt JeffBrooks, who was moved from the secondary in the spring to provideadditional depth.Fullbacks & Tight EndsExpect to see somewhat of a mixture at the fullback and tight end positions. There is plenty of experience as everyone who saw action last season returns.Heading the group are redshirt seniors Spencer Miller and Darris Jacksonand redshirt junior Rolandas Breland, a trio of tight ends. Each caught atouchdown pass last year at the tight end position. Miller also lined up atfullback at times and was very effective as a blocker. Expected to bolster thetight end position this year are transfer Octavius Darby, who possesses loadsof talent, and redshirt junior Carlos Gonzalez, who provided reserve duty lastyear. Although there were few handoffs to the fullback last season, the Bulldogshave talent at the position in senior Evans “Boo” Capers, an outstandingblocker who returns after missing most of last year with an injury, and redshirtsenior Richard Yeargin, the top reserve in 2006. Redshirt Kenneth Smallswill provide quality depth at fullback. The Bulldog fullbacks and tight endsare expected to be used more in the SC State offense in 2007.

Wide ReceiversThe Bulldogs lost three veteran receivers last season in Gerald McCloud,Kelley King and Chris Burgess, who combined for 42 catches for almost 600yards. The 2007 group will be relatively young, but will include the top receiver

in 2006 in redshirt junior Dusten Dubose, who as a reserve lastseason, had 18 catches for 201 yards and a score. Also back aresophomores Terrance Smith and Oliver “Tre’” Young, who willadd excitement with their big-play ability, along with redshirt juniorByron Bush, junior Dominique Henry and redshirt sophomore MattWashington. The wide receiver corps will be strengthened by theaddition of transfer Phillip Morris, and talented newcomers Thomas“Tray” Williams, Latron Jackson and Chase Robinson.

Offensive LineThe SC State offensive line will be without two-time All-American tackleClyde Reed, the MEAC Lineman of the Year in 2006, however, thisyear’s group will be the most seasoned and deepest offensive line inthe Buddy Pough era. Four starters, who have a combined 100 starts, return from what arguably was the best line in the MEAC last year.Behind Reed and two other All-MEAC selections – junior centerRaymond Harrison and redshirt senior guard James Lee – the lineaccounted for a MEAC-leading 242 yards a game on the ground, fourth best in the nation in Division I-AA. Returning starters joiningHarrison and Lee include redshirt senior tackle Nate Richardson, who has started 33 consecutive games, and senior guard DerrellPringle. Also back are redshirt sophomore guard Travis Ashford, who saw action in all 11 contests in 2006, and redshirt sophomoretackle Devon Dawson, who played in eight games. Expected to adddepth to the line are redshirt junior tackle Nygel Pearson, who missed

all of last season with an injury, redshirt sophomore Casey Fortune, newcomers Josh Harrison, Johnny Culbreath, both of whomwere redshirted as freshmen last season, and Jake Johnson and Shenaniah Thompson, two true freshmen.

Defensive LineThe Bulldog denfensive line was hit hard by graduation as the SC State front will be without All-MEACperformer Eric Turner and two other starters in Calvin Epps and DeLorean Shaw. The 2007 line, then, enters the campaign seeking an “identity.” A young group with no seniors, the line will not be short ontalent but must come together quickly. Redshirt junior Xavier Littleberry, perhaps the most talentedreturnee in the group, junior Keyon Brooks, who moves into a starting role at tackle, sophomoreMarkus James, and redshirt junior Cedric Lloyd, who has been a surprise since being moved fromtight end two years ago, will have to provide the leadership. Littleberry is one of the most gifted linemento play at SC State, while Brooks, who has been moved inside to capitalize on his quickness andexperience, is expected to be among the league’s top linemen this season. Sophomore Matt Key andjunior James Simmons contributed last year and should battle for starting roles in 2007. The line will bebolstered by redshirts Sterling Blunt, Jason Ayers, Patrick Brooks, Sam Chester and Chad King,a group short on experience but loaded with a lot of talent. How quickly they develop will be the key tohow productive the Bulldog defensive line will be this season.

LinebackersThe linebacker position should be one of the most productive units on the SC State 2007 squad. PatrickReed is the lone player of note not returning. Expected to anchor the linebacker corps will be junior TonyWhite and sophomore David Erby, both of whom started last year and were among the team leadersin tackles. Also returning with experience will be redshirt senior LaTavis Henderson, who was a solidreserve and saw action in 11 games during the 2006 campaign, and sophomore Ryan Potts, whoplayed in nine contests. Also expected to contribute at the position this year are redshirt freshmanAntwann Gamble, a converted safety who had a surprise spring at the new position, redshirt seniorDana Graydon, who saw action in six contests in 2006, and Josh Lucas, a very talented player. Freshman Julius Wilkerson, a highly-touted recruit, could also contribute at the position.

Defensive BacksThe Bulldog secondary is one of the deepest positions on this year’s squad, with the knowledgeable Thomas “TJ” Stanley and Stephon Gore as the onlylosses from 2006. The group that returns has played one full season together and possesses loads of talent. Dog safety Marshall McFadden, one of the

most talented players on the squad, spearheads the group and is joined by cornerbacks BaileyBrinson, a redshirt senior and sophomore redshirt Terrance Allen, along with safeties MarkeeHamlin and LaQuinn Ellerbe, both redshirt sophomores. Expected to play significant roles asreserves are Phillip Adams, who has been moved from safety to cornerback, redshirt sophomoreTravance Jackson, senior Stephon Gore and redshirt freshman Reggie McNeal. Depth will beprovided by redshirt sophomore Desmond Benjamin, who made the switch from running back tothe secondary, redshirt freshman Ricky Young, redshirt senior Russell Hemby, the top backupat quarterback last year, before switching to defense in the spring and sophomore redshirt RafaelBush.

Special TeamsSC State will be without steady placekicker Mike Gaston and punter Chris Dupree, who shared thepunting duties last year, but can take heart in the fact that sophomore Stephen Grantham, whohandled the placekicking duties as a true freshman when Gaston broke his leg in the preseason, isback after missing all of the 2006 campaign. Grantham is very talented and has a strong leg. Thepunting situation, a bit uncertain a year ago when Dupree and freshman Aaron Haire were bothtried at the position, should be a little more stable in 2006 as Haire made great strides in the springand is expected to be productive as a sophomore. He could get some competition in the fall fromnewcomers. Long snapper Kelvin Colclough is experienced and steady, while DL CedricLloyd is a very capable backup. The kickoff return duties will be handled mostly by RB Will Ford, who had one kickoff return for a touchdown last season, while WR Dominique Henry will be theprimary punt returner. Both possess great quickness and speed.
