While there are 31 NCAA conferences that sponsor multiple sports, theSun Belt is one of only eleven to participate in the Bowl ChampionshipSeries (BCS) and Division 1-A football, now known as the Football BowlSubdivision. The Sun Belt was formed in 1976 with six memberscompeting in four men’s sports, and today comprises 13 institutions ofhigher learning while sponsoring 19 championship sports for men andwomen. The conference has influence in a region that carries significantimportance, as its membership is spread out over eight states thatrepresent 113 total electoral votes. Thus, if you carry the Sun Belt, youare almost half way to the White House!

The Sun Belt Conference enters its 32nd season in 2006-2007 with aproud history of athletic and academic success. The conference sponsors10 women’s sports — basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, andvolleyball; and nine men’s sports — baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, and indoor and outdoortrack and field.

Each of the 19 sports has seen numerous team and individualaccomplishments, and 12 Sun Belt Conference schools are currentlygraduating its student athletes at a rate higher than their school’sstudent body. All Sun Belt schools are committed to excellence in the21st century, and facility upgrades and expansion are occurring onvirtually every campus.

Because of its status as a member of the Division 1-A football coalition, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 16-memberBoard of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice onsome of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will alwayshave a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines.

The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote theleague. Adding volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’stelevision package has resulted in more national and regional televisionexposure for the league than at any time in its history. The conference’sregional television package enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events toreach over 20 million households. Additionally, ESPN televised theconference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 27th straightseason in 2007, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country.

The Sun Belt Conference has partnered with XOS Technologies, Inc. todeliver a full-service, customized, public and premium web site to

provide fans with a broad range of real-time informationand content about the conference’s athletic teams. The SunBelt is one of the few conferences in the nation to providevideo highlights and features on its website from each ofthe league’s respective championships. This technologyserves as a great recruiting tool for schools by enablinganyone in the world with internet access to view theconference’s championship events, and fans in five differentcountries viewed the conference’s most recent soccerchampionship.

Prominent Sun Belt alumni include United States Secretary of StateCondoleezza Rice (Denver), NFL Hall of Fame football player “Mean” Joe Greene (North Texas), Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star baseball playerLuis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former member of the United StatesSenate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette),country music superstar Tim McGraw (Louisiana-Monroe), and actor Andy Garcia (Florida International).

The conference’s first 30 years have also produced numerous individualnational champions along with Olympic track medalists including EarlBell, Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State), Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (Florida International). Old Dominion’sAnne Donovan received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation’s top women’s basketball player in 1983, helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal in 1984, and helped the Lady Monarchs capturethe national championship in 1985 (one of eight women’s Final 4appearances by Sun Belt schools: Old Dominion — 1983, 1985; WesternKentucky — 1985, 1986, 1992; Louisiana Tech — 1994, 1998, 1999). Sun Belt teams have also participated in the men’s NCAA Final 4 (UNC-Charlotte in 1977), the College World Series (Louisiana-Lafayette in2000), the women’s College World Series (Louisiana-Lafayette in 1993,1995, 1996, 2003), and had 10 players selected in the first round of the NBA Draft.

The Sun Belt Conference is led by Commissioner Wright Waters, who is in his eighth full year as commissioner. He was named the conference’sfourth commissioner in February of 1999 following the tenures of VicBubas (1976-1990), Jim Lessig (1990-1991), and Craig Thompson (1991-1998). The league’s annual all sports champion is awarded the VicBubas Cup, named after the conference’s first commissioner.

The conference office has been headquartered in downtown New Orleanssince 2000 after moving from suburban Metairie, La., where it had beenbased since 1991. Prior to moving to the “Big Easy,” the league wasbased in Tampa, Fla., from 1977-1991. The original conference officewas located in Charlotte, N.C., from 1976-77.

THIS IS THE SUN BELT CONFERENCE

The softball team captured the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Championship.

FAU's swimming and diving team won the University's first Sun BeltConference Championship in 2006, repeated in 2007.

CRAIG ANGELOSwas named director of Athletics atFlorida Atlantic University in July2003, assuming oversightresponsibility for the institution's17-team intercollegiate athleticprograms. Since that time the totalnumber of sports has grown to 18and the department services morethan 500 student-athletes.

Angelos enthusiastically embracedhis multi-faceted role and hasmoved at a rapid pace to take the program to newer heights, by working with President Brogan, FAU students and staff. His philosophy for running asuccessful intercollegiate athletic program is built on four fundamental principles:institutional control, academicexcellence, fiscal integrity andwinning championships.

He took over a young athleticdepartment and immediatelynegotiated entrance into the SunBelt Conference (one of the 11 1-Aconferences) and developed a planand to lead the institution’stransition from NCAA Div. I-AA toI-A. He initiated the University'’sbrand identity campaign whichcame to conclusion in 2005 andhas become a revenue stream forboth the University and athletics.Along the way, a televisioncontract was secured in 2004 thatsaw ESPN and Fox Sports becomeregulars at both home and awayfootball contests; something FAUhas repeated year after year. Thedepartment also became the fourthuniversity within the state ofFlorida to have an all-sportsapparel deal with Nike, joiningFlorida State, Florida and Miami. In2005-06 the bar of success wasraised with seven of the 10sponsored FAU sports advancing topostseason play. In all, FAUcaptured five conference women’schampionships and was one of justeight schools nationally to

capture five or more women’schampionships. His leadership in2006-07 saw the Owls flourish inthe department’s first full-seasonin the Sun Belt Conference and theAtlantic Soccer Conference.

During Angelos’ tenure, the Owlshave captured 12 conference titles and FAU has represented the University in postseasoncompetition 17 times. Fourindividuals earned All-Americastatus while two earned Academic All-America honors. The department’s commitment to a holistic approach to studentathlete excellence shows withmore than 35% of the student-athletes maintaining a 3.0 GPAand with the National Consortiumfor Academics and Sports honoringFAU as an Academics and SportsOutreach and Community ServiceProgram Honor Roll member in2005. This was made possible inpart due to the recent creation ofa Champs/Lifeskills program thatassists the student-athletesdevelopment in the areas ofacademic and athletic excellence, personal and career developmentand community service.

Perhaps, most significantly, underAngelos’ leadership the departmenthas been able to develop abalanced budget plan and haswitnessed a steady rise incommunity involvement and donorcommitment providing morescholarship dollars each year.

His complete renovation offundraising measures has resultedin major gift increases of 400%,an Owl Club fund increase of 130%and an increase in special eventrevenue of 150%. Angelos’ effortsto market the teams, build a fanbase and showcase the Universityon national television have greatlyenhanced the overall image of theathletics program.

Angelos has also hired two newbasketball coaches. In April 2005,he brought Matt Doherty back tothe college ranks. In just oneseason, men’s basketball revenuestripled and attendance more thandoubled. That foundation, laid byboth Angelos and Doherty, wascontinued in 2006-2007 by formerassociate head coach and newly

hired head coach Rex Walters.Attendance continued to climb andunder Walters’ direction the Owlshosted the first round of the SunBelt Conference tournament in abasketball environment that isunmatched in the Owls 18-yearhistory.

Almost immediately after hisarrival at FAU, Angelos initiated amaster plan and review of allathletic facilities. His plan’simplementation began in the fallof 2006 with a new $4.5 milliontrack and field complex thatopened in the spring of 2007 andwelcomed fans with the firstspring game being played in Aprilon the new field. Weeks prior tothe track opening celebration, a$10 million renovation began onthe arena called home by themen’s and women’s basketballteam as well as volleyball.Perhaps the gem of the projectsincludes the plan of building anon-campus football venue thatwould solidify the athleticdepartment's position among top-tier institutions. More importantly, the entire University would benefitby his vision of developing an“innovation village” that wouldcreate much needed additionalstudent housing, retailestablishments, additional parking, and a hotel and conference center.

Prior to coming to FAU, he was thedeputy director of Athletics andchief operating officer at IndianaUniversity. While there, hesupervised many aspects of theathletic department including the

football program and wasinstrumental in negotiating a Nike contract for 23 of its 24sports. Previously, he was at theUniversity of Miami (FL) for eightyears, serving in a variety ofpositions but primarily as thesecond in command under UM’sathletics director Paul Dee. Prior toMiami, he spent three years at theNCAA as a legislative assistantinterpreting the association’s rulesand regulations. He has served asan intercollegiate athleticsadministrator for nearly 16 years.

A graduate of the CreightonUniversity School of Law inOmaha, NE, Angelos worked for ashort time in a mid-size litigationfirm in Los Angelos, CA. However,he ultimately decided to combinehis legal background and his lovefor athletics and gravitatedtowards a career in intercollegiateathletics. During his undergraduateyears at Brigham Young Universityin Provo, UT, Angelos was thestarting first baseman on thevarsity squad. He later played forone year in the Italian professionalbaseball league in Buttrio, Italy.

The 45-year-old Angelos and hiswife, Kristin, have been marriedfor 22 years. They will gainanother intercollegiate prospectivein 2007-08 as their eldestdaughter Alayna (18) joins thewomen’s basketball team at BYU.The couple has five other children,Alexis (15), Abigail (12), Austin(10), Aaron (7) and Alivia (4).

EFLORIDA ATLANTICUNIVERSITY iscommitted to each student-athlete as a total person.Participation in athletics isimportant, but it represents onlyone aspect of a student-athlete’scollege experience. Student-athletes at Florida AtlanticUniversity have the opportunityto participate in one of the topathletic programs in the country.More importantly, they have theopportunity to earn a degreefrom an outstanding academicinstitution, one that will providethem with the necessary skillsand experiences to find successand fulfillment well beyondcollege.

The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in theathletic arena is not viewed as anobstacle to the attainment ofone’s educational goals, rather itis seen as a complementary

activity. Each supports the other.Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement isnever compromised.

The University realizes thatstudent-athletes are required tocommit a large percentage oftheir personal time to University-sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the Universityrecognizes the need for a supportprogram for its intercollegiateathletes. The Student-AthleteCenter for Academic Excellence is designed to assist all student-athletes in achieving theireducational goals.

Academic counselors workcollaboratively with faculty andcampus advising centers toensure that student-athletes aretaking the appropriate classesand making progress toward theirdegrees. Counselors also workwith students on a variety oflearning enhancement activities, including study skills and time

management strategies. In addition to individualizedcounseling, a comprehensivetutorial program is also availableto student-athletes through theAcademic Center. Tutors comehighly recommended by facultyand they are generally available to work with students in all subject areas.

The Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence alsocoordinates community outreachand “life skills” activities for FAUstudent-athletes. FAU takesconsiderable pride in theaccomplishments of our student-athletes in the community. Infact, the FAU Athletic Departmentwas recognized recently by theNational Consortium of Academicsand Sport as one of the topuniversities in the country forcommitment to communityservice.
