2007 OutlookComing off a rigorous season, the 2007 Mississippi State women’s

tennis squad looks to return the program back to the successes whichwere evident in 2005 when the Lady Bulldogs cap-tured the Southeastern Conference WesternDivision title. Set to ring in her second decade atMSU, veteran head coach Tracy Lane looks touphold and bring team chemistry through com-petition this spring.

“I’m really looking forward to the upcomingseason,” Lane said. “We have a really youngteam, [but they] are a great group ofgirls. The team chemistry isgreat and we are playingwith much more confi-dence.”

State returns five letterwinners from the 2006 cam-paign and welcomed two freshmen to the campus thispast fall. With those seven players, Lane looks to haveher team at full force for 2007.

“We have a lot of youth on our team, withonly one junior, four sophomores and two fresh-men,” elaborated Lane. “The key for us thissemester is to have everybody healthy. If we arehealthy, we will have really good depth and a lot offlexibility. We have two freshmen that we feel shouldmake an immediate impact in the lineup. The key for usis to continue working hard, staying healthy and to com-pete with confidence and passion.”

Leadership for the Lady Bulldogs is expected tocome from two-time letterwinner Renée Joseph, who prima-rily played singles at the No. 2 position last season. The Rock Hill,S.C. native will enter the season providing a solid base to her team-mates both on and off the courts.

“Renée [Joseph] is definitely a team leader,” Lane noted. “She ispositive with her teammates, really encourages them and helps them indecision-making. She is a player that we are expecting to help lead the

program.”

Expected to start high in the lineup will be sopho-more Martina Banikova, who has become a seasonedveteran after a solid fall season. The Kosice, Slovakianative returns to the hard courts as a determined

player ready to return State back to postseason play.During the fall, she posted a 5-6 record in both singles

and doubles.

“Martina [Banikova] has made a total turnaround,” recalledLane. “She fights on the court and is playing at a really com-petitive level with the best players in the country. Playing No.1 or No. 2 makes players look to you for leadership.”

Also returning to the courts for the Maroon andWhite are three other Lady Bulldogs who enter the spring asseasoned sophomores. They have battled through their rook-

ie season and have come out gaining confidence with a seasonbehind them.

“Last year was a struggle as our freshmen were really inexpe-rienced,” reflected Lane. “They are all playing with so much more

confidence and that really is the key in winning matches. As aplayer, you need to play to your strengths. Last season, I felt like

we allowed our weaknesses to show.”

Elna de Villiers looks to continue her success andimprove on her fall records of 8-7 in singles and 6-3 indoubles. The Grunau, Namibia native is coming off avery productive fall campaign highlighted by a four-

match winning streak during the ITA South Regional. Sheenters the spring after posting team-best winning percent-

ages of .533 in singles and .667 in doubles.

2007 Lady Bulldog Roster Breakdown

“Elna was a real positive for us this fall,” concluded Lane. “She isworking really hard. I can’t tell you how many times I have shown upto practice and she is out there serving. That’s what most playersdon’t realize... a few minutes extra here and there that are self-initiat-ed goes a long way. When players take their games into their ownhands, become more accountable for their wins and losses, thenthat is when they really improve.”

Rounding out the returnees are Daniela Juskova andTatiana Feit. Juskova joined the State squad with fellowSlovakian and high school teammate Banikova and is com-ing off a season plagued with injuries. She looks be a keypart to State’s success by staying healthy and givingmore versatility to the team. A native of Neuilly SurSeine, France, Feit enters the season coming off a bal-anced 6-6 fall season highlighted by claiming theOrange Draw crown at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.

In addition, Lane welcomed two new freshmen -Valeriya Makarycheva and DeAndra Saddler.Makarycheva enters her rookie season after a 3-8 fallrecord. Hailing from Moscow, Russia, she looks tomake an impact with her dominant backhand.Saddler, the Alpharetta, Ga., native, closedout her fall season on the injured list. Saddlerwas sidelined early to reserve her for thespring season and is expected to make animmediate impact for the Lady Bulldogs.

“What excites me about this team is the fact that we are soyoung,” added Lane. “None of them have reached their

potential and they are all so eager to learn andimprove. They come with a lot of energy. They areenjoying each other and yet they challenge eachother daily.”

In doubles, the tandem of Banikova andMakarycheva came out of the fall with a record of 3-

4, highlighted by a trip to the finals of Flight 1 at theHoosier Classic.

Joseph teamed up primarily with Juskova lastspring for five victories including their sole SEC win. During

the fall, Joseph teamed up with de Villiers and posted a team-best 4-1 record.

Lane sees the team chemistry coming together and becoming aforce to propel the Lady Bulldogs back to postseason. She knowsthat the team has come together and all eyes are fixed uponreturning to the NCAA Tournament.

“Tennis in many ways is such an individual sport,” commentedLane. “Each player has specific goals they want to achieve tomake improvements in their games. We want to be winningmatches and being more competitive within the SEC. Ultimatelywe want to be playing postseason year-in and year-out.”
