Associate Head Coach: Donna DiBiase (ninth year)

Assistant Coach: Jimmy Hubble (first year)

Volunteer Assistant: Amanda Fortune (first year)

Neverending Home Runs: Illinois finished out the regular sea-

son just as it started - bashing home runs. The Illini went deep

at least twice every weekend of the 2008 season, knocking at

least four in eight of the 12 weekends. The Illini have a current

streak of nine games with at least one home run and have

gone yard in 19 of their last 21 contests.

Wright Where We Want Them: Lefthander Ashley Wright

mowed down Southern Illinois last Wednesday to lead the Illini

to a 4-0 win. Wright allowed just four hits in her best com-

plete-game outing of the season, tossing just 87 pitches and

striking out three in the contest. She picked up her second

shutout of the year, the fifth overall for the Illini.

Add Another Name To The List: Leftfielder Ashley Conrad

became the 10th different Illini to homer this season when she

went deep against Iowa for her first career home run. Conrad

is also the third freshman to go yard this year, along with des-

ignated player Hollie Pinchback and first baseman Audrey

Gallien.

Standing Apart: In addition to leading in team categories, the

Illini also top the conference in several individual categories.

Shortstop Angelena Mexicano ranks first in home runs (24),

54 RBIs and Diller is tied with teammate Danielle Zymkowitz

for fourth with 42 runs scored.

100th Win: Illinois 9, St. John’s 0, 5 innings (Feb. 14, 2003)

200th Win: Illinois 5, Bradley 2 (April 21, 2005)

The Illini finished off the regular season with

their last Big Ten series against Iowa. Third

baseman Shanna Diller homered in the first

contest, but the Orange and Blue fell, 5-2.

Trailing 4-0 in the season finale against the

Hawkeyes, the Illini battled back in the fourth

to tie the game. A three-run homer put Iowa

back on top, but Illinois again responded with

a pair of home runs to pull within a run before

the Hawkeyes blew the game open with five

runs in the top of the seventh to seal the 12-6

win.

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO I CAN DO BETTER

When rightfielder Hope Howell went deep

against Penn State, she made the ninth differ-

ent Illini to homer this season then Ashley

Conrad joined the club as the 10th against

Iowa. Aside from leadoff slapper Danielle

Zymkowitz, who is second on the team with 65

hits, each regular starter in the Illinois lineup

has had at least one roundtripper, with six of

the nine going deep at least four times.

OFFENSIVE OUTPUT

Illinois has manufactured more runs this sea-

son that its opponents, outscoring them, 331-

289. The Illini have allowed 55 home runs while

blasting 76. The Orange and Blue have also

out-hit their opponents, 464-443.

GOING PRO

Angelena Mexicano became the second Illini

ever drafted by the National Pro Fastpitch. She

was selected in the third round by the Akron

Racers. A week after Mexicano was drafted,

Shanna Diller was picked up by the Rockford

Thunder. Both may sign professional contracts

at the end of the 2008 season. Former first

baseman Jenna Hall was the first Illini drafted

in 2006 and still plays in the NPF, while former

shortstop Lindsey Hamma also played in the

pro league.

MORE ON MEXICANO

Angelena Mexicano has progressed throughout

her years in the Orange and Blue to become one

of the most prolific Illini in program history,

breaking the career home run record this sea-

son and moving up in the top ten in several

other categories.

After leading the nation in home runs last year,

the Illini have continued their trend of going

yard, having homered in 41 of 61 games so far

this season. The Orange and Blue went deep at

least twice in 25 of those games and have also

had three four-game and one seven-game

streak with at least one long ball. Beginning

with the Ohio State series, Illinois homered

twice in five straight games, knocking a total

GLOBAL FLAVOR

In a recent article in the Chicago Sun Times, the University

of Illinois was reported to have more international students

than any other public university. The more than 5,000

enrolled international students are more the most for any

public university in U.S. history. This diversity is reflected in

the softball team’s pregame warmup. During partner drills,

one of the player’s counts to ten in one of seven different

languages, including Deutsch, Spanish, German, Italian,

Korean, Tagala and of course, English.

RECORD WATCH

Claire DeVreese currently has 50 career wins, which ranks

second in school history. She moved into sole possession of

the second spot with her 13 win of the season, a four-

strikeout performance against Eastern Illinois. She is also

only the fourth pitcher in Illini history to crack 20 wins in a

single season.

TWO FOR THE SHOW

Angelena Mexicano’s two-home runs against then-No. 23

DePaul marked the fourth time in her career that the short-

stop has gone deep twice in the same game. She became

the second Illini to accomplish the feat this season, as cen-

terfielder Sarah Bryers has had a pair of home runs in the

same game twice, the first against Illinois-Chicago and

second against Eastern Illinois.

BACK TO BACKERS

Centerfielder Sarah Bryers and rightfielder Hope Howell

belted back-to-back home runs in the third inning against

Wisconsin, marking the third time this season the Illini

have homered in back-to-back at-bats. The last time it

happened was against Rutgers on Feb. 29, while the

Orange and Blue also did in the very first game of the sea-

son against Memphis.

FIGHTING ILLINI SOFTBALL 5

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

Centerfielder Sarah Bryers lit up the

s c o re b o a rd against Illinois-Chicago,

belting two home runs, including her

first career grand slam, to collect a

school-record seven RBIs in the game.

The mark surpassed the single-game

re c o rd of six RBIs set by Rachelle

Coriddi in 2003 and tied by current

shortstop Angelena Mexicano in 2006.

DEEP SIXED

Catcher Lana Arm s t rong blasted her

sixth home run of the season, a three-

run shot against Penn State, to lead

Illinois to the 11-1 victory. Armstrong

collected six RBIs in the contest, tied for

the second most in a single game in

school history.

RUN, RUN, RUN

Illinois has produced 331 total runs so

far this season, scoring at least five

runs in 29 games this year. The Illini

have produced at least one run in 52 out

of 61 games.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

The Illini face a tough road through the

2008 season. Within the first month of

the season, Illinois faced five teams

that finished the 2007 season in the

USA Today/NFCA Top 25. In the first two

weeks of the season, half of Illinois’

opponents were ranked or re c e i v i n g

votes. Overall, the Orange and Blue

faced four 2007 Women’s College World

Series teams and four other teams that

reached the NCAA Super Regionals.

SPANNING THE YEARS

Illinois has a very balanced roster when

broken down by classes. The senior,

sophomore and freshman classes each

six members on the squad, while the

junior class has five representatives.

ROUNDING THE BASES

Illinois belted a total of nine home runs

over the weekend at the Miken Classic,

nearly matching their season total of 13

coming into the tournament. Six differ-

ent Illini went deep, with Mexicano,

Shanna Diller and Katrina Ross each

homering twice over the weekend. The

Illini bashed five home runs in their

t o u rnament opener against Rutgers,

tying the team’s single-game record. It

marked just the second time in history

that five different Illini homered in a

game.

SUPER TUESDAY

After knocking off then-No. 6 UCLA and

battling against then-No. 9 Oklahoma,

Illinois received 11 votes in each of the

polls for the week of Feb. 19. It marked

the first time in the 2008 season that

the Illini received votes.

VETERANS VS. ROOKIES

The infield consists of a blend of youth

and veteran talent. The right side of

Katrina Ross or Audrey Gallien at first

and Danielle Zymkowitz at second fea-

tures fresh faces in the infield, as Ross

spent most of last season battling an

injury. The left side features veterans

Shanna Diller and Angelena Mexicano,

who have both started since their fresh-

man season.

HERE, THERE, EVERYWHERE

The Illinois softball team has represen-

tatives from six different states on the

roster. Nine players hail from within the

state of Illinois, while six have made

their way to the Land of Lincoln from

California. Texas has four representa-

tives and Georgia, Indiana and

Washington each have one.

SPLITTSVILLE

Through the first three weeks of the sea-

son, Illinois played two games on the

same day six times. On all six occasions,

Illinois split decisions, winning the first

game of the day four times.

I n t e re s t i n g l y, on five of those days

Illinois faced at least one ranked oppo-

nent. The one time Illinois did not face a

ranked opponent was on opening day of

the season; however, one of their oppo-

nents that day was USF, which was

receiving votes at the time.

WHAT SPORT DO YOU PLAY?When passing through the airport, the

Illinois softball team is often mistaken

for the volleyball team. The ro s t e r

includes 11 players 5’7” or taller,

including four that are at least 5’10”.

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME

When the Illini open the 2008 home sea-

son on March 27, Eichelberger Field will

have a new look to it. Thanks to a $1

million donation from the Rex & Alice A.

Martin Foundation, the Illini will have a

new press box, clubhouse, restrooms

and concession stand. The Rex & Alice

A. Martin Foundation is a private chari-

table foundation that funds major proj-

ects for young people. The home facility

will be deemed Eichelberger Field at

Martin Stadium in honor of the two par-

ties that have made extraordinary con-

tributions to the Illinois softball pro-

gram. Field at Martin Stadium in honor

of the two parties that have made

extraordinary contributions to the Illinois

softball program.
