2007-08 Blue Hose Basketball

Hose entering the Army game have played five first time opponents in the 2007-08 season. PC has only played Clemson in its history among its first six opponents.

YOU NEVER FORGET: In Clemson, the Blue Hose faced off against their first ever NCAA Division I nation-ally-ranked opponent. Clemson is currently ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, while the Tigers check in at No. 24 currently in the Associated Press rankings.

INSIDE MAN: Freshman Al'Lonzo Coleman continued his progression towards being a strong low post threat for PC against Clemson, setting a career-high in points with 18 against the Tigers. Coleman had one of the best all around lines for a Blue Hose player against Clemson as he had 18 points, four steals and six rebounds against the Tigers.

0-6: PC's 0-6 start marks the first time under Nibert that the Blue Hose have started with six consecutive losses. Prior to this season in Nibert's 18 years the Blue Hose had only inaugurated a season with four straight losses just once, losing four consecutive to open the 1998-99 season. Despite the 0-4 loss that season, PC finished the year 20-10, promptly kicking away the sluggish start by winning seven straight games after the 0-4 start.

ALL-TOURNAMENT: Pat Kiscaden had one of the best three-game showings of his career as he ended the three games of the Basketball Travelers Invitational with a grand total of 60 points, including a career-high tying 27 in the loss to LMU on Saturday. His exploits in the three-day tournament earned him All-Tournament team plaudits. Kiscaden had a team game-high 18 points in PC’s loss to New Mexico in its first game of the event on Friday and a team game-high 15 points in PC’s narrow loss to St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at The Pit. In total on the year, Kiscaden has led or tied for the Blue Hose team lead in scoring in four of PC’s six games.

KEEP IT GOING: Kiscaden has scored 76 points overall in PC's last four games for an average of 19 points per game. Kiscaden had 16 in the Clemson game.

GETTING INTO GAME SHAPE: After trying to get back into game shape after offseason surgery, Bryan Bostic had his best game in a Blue Hose uniform in the 2007-08 season against St. Bonaventure as he finished with a season-best 12 points and six rebounds. The junior continued his strong play against Clemson as he finished as one of three Blue Hose in the Clemson game in double figures. Bostic had 10 in the game.

DOUBLE DIGITS: The Blue Hose have had three players finish in double digits in four of PC's six games. The Blue Hose have had two or more finish with 10 or more points in five of their six games. PC did not have anyone reach double figures against Radford.

PERFECT: The Blue Hose finished a game perfect from the charity stripe for the first time against Clemson. PC was a perfect 7-for-7 in the game from the free throw line.

SECONDS: The Blue Hose will have two games against two first time opponents in 2007-08 as they will play Radford twice and Army twice in a home and away series between the two schools.

THE “STUDENT” IN STUDENT-ATHLETE: All five PC seniors from last year's PC men's basketball squad graduated last May. In total, all 51 of 51 seniors during the Gregg Nibert tenure at PC have graduated.

IN THE PAINT: The Blue Hose went into halftime against Clemson having been outscored in the paint by the Tigers 22-10. PC forced its way inside against the strong Clemson interior in the second half, outscor-ing the Tigers 20-12 in the second half to finish just behind what many consider the strongest front line

in the ACC in Clemson at 34-30 in favor of the Tigers in points in the paint.

NO PLACE LIKE IT: PC concluded its 2006-07 regular season campaign with a win over Tusculum to finish the season 12-1 at the Templeton Center. If you included the SAC Tournament quarterfinal victory over Newberry the Blue Hose ended the year 13-1 at home. Overall, at the Templeton Center over the last three years the Blue have gone 38-3 at home since the beginning of the 2004-05 bas-ketball season.

MAKE IT SIX: The 20 wins obtained by the Blue Hose in the 2006-07 season garnered Nibert his sixth 20-win season in his 18 years at the helm of the Blue Hose.

VERY SLY: Travis Sligh finished the Clemson game with a career-high tying eight rebounds.

PC LAST TIME OUT: Presbyterian College pulled to within three in the second half but could not get any closer as No. 22 Clemson pulled away for a 74-57 victory over the Blue Hose before 7,313 on Wednesday evening Littlejohn Coliseum. The Blue Hose fell to 0-6 on the season with the loss, while Clemson stayed perfect with the victory, improving to 4-0. PC Freshman Al’Lonzo Coleman contin-ued his strong progression into an inside presence for the Blue Hose against Clemson, scoring a ca-reer-best 18 points. Coleman also had four steals and six rebounds in the game. Coleman was 7-for-12 from the field in the game and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Pat Kiscaden (Oviedo, Fla.) continued his recent string of stellar play in the loss, finishing the game with 16 points. Kiscaden had all four Blue Hose three-pointers in the game. In total, three Blue Hose finished in double digits as Bryan Bostic had 10 in 29 minutes of action for PC.

ON THE RADIO: The 2007-08 season will mark the beginning of a new era of radio for PC men’s basketball as it will be the first season that new radio flagship Real Radio 860 WLBG will broadcast PC men’s basketball. John Avery will provide play-by-play for the majority of the games, while Erskine College Vice President for Advancement and Mayor of Due West, S.C. Ralph Paterson will join Avery for many Blue Hose men's basketball games. When Patterson is not available, PC Director of Sports Informa-tion and Game Operations Brian Hand will join Avery to help cover all the Blue Hose action. Avery will be on the call for PC's first ever tilt with the Black Knights.

ARMY LAST SEASON: The Black Knights had one of their best seasons in quite some time in the 2006-07 season, claiming 15 wins last year for the first time since the 1984-85 season. The Black Knights concluded the year 15-16 overall, which included a 4-10 mark in Patriot League action. The Black Knights were 10-4 overall at home last season, including 6-1 against non-conference opponents.

ARMY THIS SEASON: Army welcomes Presbyterian College to Christl Arena owning a 1-3 re-cord in the 2007-08 season. The Black Knights have a win over Sacred Heart, but have fallen to Minnesota, Long Island and Cornell. PC is Army's second home game of the season. The Black Knights are 0-1 on the year at Christl after their loss to Long Island on Friday, Nov. 16.

ARMY LAST TIME OUT: The Army men’s basketball team had its highest offensive output of the season, but it was not enough in a 93-78 loss to the Cornell Big Red on Tuesday night. Senior guard Jarell Brown led the Black Knights with 30 points, tying his career high. Brown scored 19 of his points in the second half, hitting 5-of-7 shots, including two of his three attempts from behind the arc after halftime. He finished the game 9-of -14 from the field, including 5-of-7 from deep. Brown also hit 7-of-8 foul shots. Sophomore guard Josh Miller posted the exact same stat line of 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the second straight game, tying his career best in each category.

ARMY STATISTICALLY: A second-team All-Patriot League selection last season, Brown from his guard position is leading the Black Knights for the second straight season in scoring. Brown is currently averaging 16.3 points per game. The 6-foot-2, 183-pound preseason All-Patriot League selection is shooting 43 percent from the field overall and from three-point range. Brown forms a strong backcourt tandem with Josh Miller, who at 6-foot and 185 pounds is Army's leading re-bounder with 21 plucked in the 2007-08 season for an average of 5.3 caroms per contest. Miller is averaging a team second-best 10.8 points-per-game. The duo is two of three Black Knights currently averaging double figures as 6-foot-5 junior forward Kenny Brewer enters Saturday's game against PC averaging 10.5 points per game.

Gregg Nibert, the win-ningest coach in program history, will lead the PC men’s basketball program into NCAA Division I in the 2007-08 season. In his 19th season at the helm of the Blue Hose men’s bas-ketball program, Nibert has compiled an overall coaching mark of 327-206. He broke the all-time wins record during the 1996-97 season in PC’s 72-59 victory over Em-bry-Riddle University at the Land of Magic Classic Tournament.

Nibert is the first and only men’s basketball coach in Presbyterian College history to reach the 300-win plateau, an honor he reached during the 2005-06 season after becoming the first to accomplish 200 wins at PC in the 2000-01 season. During his 18-year tenure at Presbyterian College, Nibert has compiled six 20-win seasons. His Blue Hose teams finished in the top four in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season standings 14 times, winning the SAC Championship twice (1992-93 & 1996-97) and the Food Lion SAC Tourna-ment title once (1995-96). He has also been named the SAC Coach-of-the-Year twice for his efforts (1993 and 1997). Nibert is the only coach in the history of PC basketball to lead the institution to two different post-season tournaments; guiding the Blue Hose to the NAIA National Tournament in 1993 and the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1996, 1997, 2003, and 2006. Nibert is also the only coach

in the history of the SAC to coach a squad to the “Sweet 16” of the Division II Tournament. Even more impressive, Nibert has seen 51 out of his 51 seniors graduate from Presbyterian during his tenure. In their final year in NCAA Division II in the 2006-07 season, the Blue Hose posted a 20-9 record to finish with two consecutive 20-win seasons. PC concluded SAC regular season play in second with a 12-4 mark and advanced to the Food Lion SAC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals where they fell to tournament champion and NCAA Division II Elite Eight participant Wingate. In the 2005-06 campaign, PC compiled a 25-10 overall record including a 10-4 ledger in the South Atlantic Conference, good for a tie at second place in the league. The Blue Hose advanced to the finals of the 2006 Food Lion/SAC Tournament, which earned them an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament, where they advanced to the semifinals. In the 2004-05 season, Nibert led the Blue Hose to an 18-11 overall record and a tie for third place in the SAC regular season. In addition, the Blue Hose advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament. Nibert led the Blue Hose to a program record-tying 27 wins against nine losses in the 2002-03 season. The team compiled a 9-5 mark in SAC play, good for a fourth place finish. In the Food Lion SAC Tournament, PC upset #1 seed Carson-New-man College 69-52 in the semifinals before falling 71-62 to the #3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Blue Hose received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional and entered the postseason tournament as the #8 seed. In the opening round, PC upset #1 seed and No. 13-ranked Columbus State University, 71-59. In the semifinals, PC knocked off the #5 seed Shaw University, 77-58, to advance to the “Sweet 16.” PC’s “cinderella run” through the NCAA Tournament ended at the hands of #2 seed Bowie State University, 67-53, in the region championship game. Nibert’s 1996-97 squad posted a 20-7 overall record, which included the program’s second SAC regular season title along with its second straight trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Blue Hose received a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 15 in the country.

H i s 1 9 9 5 - 9 6 team won the program’s first-ever SAC Tour-nament title and received an auto-matic bid to the NCAA Tourna-ment. In 1993, Nibert led the Blue Hose team which captured the SAC regular season champi-onship and won a school record 27 games to the NAIA Na-tional Tourna-ment in Kansas City, Mo. The national tourna-ment appearance was the first-ever for Presbyterian

College. For his efforts, Nibert was named the Coach of the Year for the state of South Carolina, the South Atlantic Con-ference and NAIA District 26. Well respected among fellow coaches, Nibert has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 27 years and has also been a NABC Division II Basketball Congressman. Nibert has also established one of the largest basketball team camps in the country over the course of his time at PC. The Camp of Champions Team Camp is in its 19th year and has attracted thousands of kids to the Presbyterian College campus.

Nibert, a 1979 graduate of Marietta College, began his coach-ing career at Rice University where he served as an assistant coach under Mike Schuler, who would later earn NBA Coach of the Year honors with the Portland Trailblazers. In 1981, Nibert moved with fellow Owl aide Butch Estes to Clinton, S.C., when Estes accepted Presbyterian’s head coaching job. The Blue Hose would record a 57-35 ledger over the next three seasons, includ-ing a pair of 20-win campaigns. Nibert then moved to Furman University as a part-time as-sistant coach under Paladin mentor Gene Davis. One year later, Estes took Davis’ spot at the helm of Furman’s program and Nibert was shifted to the full-time assistant’s post, a slot he would man until being named Presbyterian’s 17th head basketball coach on April 26, 1989. While a student-athlete at Marietta, Nibert, a native of Grove City, Ohio, earned Most Improved Player honors during his junior season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player following his senior campaign. Nibert is married to the former Peggy Harling of Simpsonville, S.C., and the couple has two sons, Shaun (17) and Van (14).

Game One

Nebraska 67, Presbyterian 52LINCOLN, Neb. – Battling a 43-16 halftime deficit, the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team turned in a stellar second half, only to fall short against Nebraska, 67-52 in the first foray into NCAA Division I competition for the Blue Hose. After hitting just 23.1 percent from the field in the first half and only 16.7 from behind the arc, Presbyterian hit 50 percent (11-of-22) in the second period, includ-ing 10-of-15 from long range. Overall, the Blue Hose shot 5 of 21 from inside the arc, while rallying to shoot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from 3-point range.

Walt Allen (London, KY) paced the Blue Hose with 13 points, as he was one of three Presbyterian players to hit from three. Behind the resilient performance, PC outscored Nebraska 36-24 in the second half.

The Huskers came out strong, building an early 23-5 lead, hitting 9-of-10 from the field to open the game, including 5-of-6 from behind the arc in the first eight minutes of the contest.

A late 9-0 run and a Ryan Anderson 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Nebraska a com-manding 43-16 halftime lead.

Five 3-pointers to begin the first six minutes of the second half kept Presbyterian even with the Huskers, while it took the Blue Hose just 7:38 to score more points in the second half than it did in the first. After knocking down just 2-of-12 from behind the arc in the first half, PC hit 9-of-10 through the first 14 minutes of the second period.

Behind the strong 3-point shooting, Presbyterian used an 11-0 run to pull to within 59-41 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Blue Hose got as close as 15 with 4:04 left on another 3-pointer by Allen, but fell short of the upset.

Game Six

#22 Clemson 74, Presbyterian 57 CLEMSON, S.C. – Presbyterian College pulled to within three in the second half but could not get any closer as No. 22 Clemson pulled away for a 74-57 victory over the Blue Hose before 7,313 on Wednesday evening Littlejohn Coliseum.

PC Freshman Al’Lonzo Coleman (Charlotte, N.C.) continued his strong progression into an inside presence for the Blue Hose against Clemson, scoring a career-best 18 points.

Kiscaden had all four Blue Hose three-point-ers in the game.

In total, three Blue Hose finished in double digits as Bryan Bostic (Norcross, Ga.) had 10 in 29 minutes of action for PC.

Clemson was led in the win by K.C. Rivers, who had a game-high tying 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Blue Hose shot 42.6 percent overall in the game, but were uncharacteristically only 21.1 percent from three-point range. Clemson shot 46.8 percent in the contest from the field.

PC was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the loss.

Down 36-28 at halftime, PC commissioned the first four minutes of the second half by cutting the lead to six points at 42-36 with 15:58 left in the contest.

The Blue Hose stayed at pace with the Tigers for most of the first eight minutes of the second half led by Coleman and Bostic both hitting two two-point baskets each to keep the Blue Hose within striking distance.

Nevertheless, the Tigers opportunistically pulled ahead by 11 by the second media timeout of the second half with 11:56 left in the game.

Down by 15 with just over nine minutes left in the game, PC went on an 11-0 run to cut the Clemson lead to 53-49 after five quick points by Kiscaden. Cliff Hammonds hit a trey for Clemson with just over eight minutes left to end the scoreless drought for Clemson and put the Tigers up by seven at 56-49.

The Blue Hose got to within three at 56-53 after a lay-up on a tip by Coleman, who had the ball knocked out of his hand. Nevertheless, somehow the basketball found its way into the bucket after rattling around the rim.

That would be as close as the Blue Hose would prove to get as the Tigers would close the curtains on the first meeting between the two teams since the 1982-83 season with an 18-4 run to garner a 74-57 victory over the Blue Hose.

PC opened the game with a 3-2 lead after Ryan Lamb (Hiram, Ga.) scored the first three points of the game on a three-point play the old fashioned way by hitting a lay-up and then nailing his free throw after being fouled in the process.

The Tigers would eventually go on a 5-0 run early in the first half to take a 12-6 lead, but the Blue Hose would to pull to within two at 12-10 when Martynas Versinskas (Kaunas, Lithuania) hit two free throws after the first media timeout at the 14:04 mark.

The Blue Hose took the lead again with just under 12 minutes left when Kiscaden nailed a three-pointer from the left side to give PC a 13-12 advantage.

After Clemson went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-13 lead, Kiscaden once again tied the game shortly thereafter at 16-16 when he hit his third three-pointer of the game.

The Tigers would then go on a 10-2 run to take its largest lead of the night up to that point at 28-18.

Clemson would eventually push their lead to 12, but Coleman made sure to keep the Blue Hose close in the final minutes when he hit a lay-up to put PC behind just 10 at 36-26.

Bryan Bostic (Norcross, Ga.) then cut the lead to eight on PC’s last possession when he hit a lay-up to let the two teams go into intermission with Clemson on top 36-28.

Kiscaden led the Blue Hose in the first stanza with 11 points, going 4-for-5 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

PC led twice in the first half.
